[googlefont=Roboto Condensed][googlefont=Raleway] Your head is so numb, that nervous breath you try to hide between the motions; that trembling tender little sigh.
[PTabbedContent][PTab= ➊ ] [attr="class","scroll"] [attr="class","cp cp-feather"] APPEARANCE The thing about Ravenpaw is that you can never be sure of what he truly looks like. Depending on the shaft of light hitting him at any moment, he can appear to be a smoky black, a light grey or a dusky brown. These colours melt together into a mysterious swirling pattern, growing more mottled down towards his lower body. This mixture of uncertain colours is interrupted only by sharp-edged splashes of white. His paws each look to have been dipped in white, and his muzzle is evenly split between light and dark shades. His coat is short and rough-textured, or at least rougher in texture than a normal cat coat would be. His eyes, too, can confuse. In certain lighting, they appear to be a pale yellow, and in others, a vibrant green. Above his narrowed, handsome eyes rest two small, unusual dots of white, looking almost like eyebrows. He has narrow, sharp ears that taper off into an abrupt point. His body is skinny, unathletic and quite unimpressive. It is clear that he isn’t quite built for combat. His head seems slightly too large for his body, giving him a gawky, awkward look. His tail is skinny and scraggly and sometimes dragging behind him along the ground as though he couldn't be bothered to lift it up like most cats tend to. APPEARANCE SUMMARY A brownish, greyish black and white tom with two white spots above his pale yellow-green eyes. SCARS & INJURIES None. IN-DEPTH Ravenpaw finds great comfort in routine. Doing things a similar way every day brings him solace and peace. He likes knowing what to expect from every day and allows himself to settle in to reassuring repetition. Unfortunately, he does not exist in a magical world where nothing changes. His routine is continually disrupted, muddled and torn asunder. He finds it extremely difficult to adapt to change. It brings him great stress and discomfort, sometimes even anguish, when something changes in his life, even if it is minor. He is like a Jenga tower, wherein the removal of one brick brings the entire thing crashing down. He cannot stand it when anything goes wrong. Even more frustrating to him is that when he becomes distressed about minor change, is that no-one really understands why he feels so affected by it. When upset, Ravenpaw usually retreats within himself, unable to articulate how he feels to others and seemingly losing the ability to speak. In moments like these he will attempt to move away from other cats, not wanting to hear anyone speak to him or attempt to touch him, no matter how well-intentioned those gestures be. He is most comfortable when he can predict the future, which of course, is not always possible. Ravenpaw can be totally honest with others, even when he probably shouldn’t be. If he genuinely believes something someone did was foolish, he will state it. He isn’t intentionally trying to be rude or hurtful, he is just incredibly truthful and can sometimes forget that there are moments where the truth should be kept silent. Since kit-hood, he has always been this way, and it’s resulted in some cats avoiding him to escape being offended. Unfortunately, though Ravenpaw understands after the fact that what he said was offensive, in the moment, it doesn’t even cross his mind. He has a very flimsy filter on his thoughts and will always state what is on his mind, regretting it only after the cat he’s told becomes upset or annoyed. He will sincerely apologise, but likely repeat the same mistakes due to his difficulty reading the situation and gauging what is appropriate. His honesty can come with positives. You can trust that Ravenpaw would never try to deceive you and will always tell you his true thoughts, even if he sometimes struggles to describe them in a way that might make sense to others. You will always know he means well with what he says, and that he doesn’t mean to cause hurt or upset. His inability to lie may result in him asking uncomfortable questions, but sometimes these are questions that need to be asked and it is important to acknowledge them rather than running away. Despite his indelicacy in navigating social situations, Ravenpaw is incredibly empathetic. He may not understand the logic behind what other cats do, but he is extremely understanding of their emotions. His heart aches when another cat describes their sadness, and leaps with happiness when another cat describes a joyful moment. He loves seeing other cats be happy, even if he doesn’t particularly like that cat or even know them. He will go out of his way to do things for others, and will always agree to help someone in need. Though he is not good at making friends, if he had friends he would be extremely affectionate towards them and always try to bring them things they like or talk to them about things he knows they like. Though he can be a confusing cat to understand, once understood, a friendship with him would likely be very long-term. Ravenpaw is the kind of cat to have very few friends but be extremely close to those few friends. His empathy extends beyond his Clan, to other Clans and even to other animals. Ravenpaw is adverse to any sort of unneeded violence because of this. He doesn’t understand why he must challenge intruders on LightningClan territory, especially if that trespasser is starving or not really doing any harm in his opinion. He doesn’t like inflicting pain on other living things, and is extremely adamant about killing prey quickly so as not to prolong their suffering. He cares about other living things, and treats the dying (even if that dying creature is a rabbit or a bird) with great respect and empathy. He would never hurt or kill a young animal, and for this reason he becomes extremely angry with any cat that does. He includes bird’s eggs in his definition of “young animal” and will never, ever disturb a nest. In fact, he’d probably be more likely to go out of his way to defend that nest, much to the confusion of the mother bird. Ravenpaw has an intense curiosity about the dead. His fascination with the morbid began at a young age when he had found a dead magpie sprawled beneath a rock. It was evidently too rotten to eat, so was abandoned, but Ravenpaw returned to that magpie in subsequent days. He watched with fascination as it decomposed, eventually exposing the bones. Most interesting of all was that skull with the wide gap where the eye once was. To think that no matter what, all living things eventually gave their energy to other living things to keep on living… it made him both afraid and relieved. It made him feel like the world was all connected, rather than it being divided into distinct worlds. One day, no matter what he did in life, he’d give his own life to hundreds of other living things, and wasn’t that kind of beautiful? He attempted to explain this to other cats, but they became adverse to him, disturbed by his descriptions of decomposition and death. Ravenpaw didn’t understand why nobody else was as interested as he was. Upset, he withdrew from his clanmates and continued to pursue his interest in death. This curiosity with dead things grew to include living things, too. He wanted to know what was inside living things, how they worked. So, he began to dissect prey. When eating, he would open them up and take a look at what he could see, making as much sense as a cat could from these findings. He still isn’t sure exactly how these things work, but hey, he has a good enough idea of what’s inside a rabbit, a hare, a crow… and probably inside him, too, since a lot of these things looked rather similar. His dissections of prey disgusted other cats even more, and he became more and more isolated from his denmates. Even his brother Cloudpaw didn’t understand why his brother couldn’t just… be normal. Ravenpaw felt very lonely in his pursuit of understanding, wishing he had friends that could accept the way he was and not want him to change, would maybe listen to his interests rather than berate him for them. His loneliness grew so strong that he would often head out into the territory alone, unbeknownst to his mentor, and visit his mother’s grave. His visitations were unusual, for the fact that he would frequently speak to that little sad patch of earth as if he were having a genuine conversation with his mother. This one-sided conversations made him feel better, because he hoped that though he couldn’t see Dovecloud and had never really known her, that she could hear him, and wasn’t ashamed. Even if he was strange, well… he hoped she was proud of him. Those moments of silence after he asked her a question made him feel both hollow and listened to. Ravenpaw has an incredible memory, at least when it comes to things that interest him. One such interest is Clan history and legends. He will listen to stories almost religiously from the elders or senior warriors, absorbing every detail. He can then blurt out that detail with astounding accuracy, even when no cat is really interested in listening. His ability to recall huge amounts of detail from these stories can either astound or annoy. Either way, Ravenpaw will certainly be a keeper of legends in his old age. He also has a keen interest in inventing his own stories, coming up with elaborate characters in his own mind and telling anyone who will listen about them. Unfortunately, his memory is focused in entirely on fiction, so when it comes to remembering things that don’t interest him as much, such as battle moves, he can fail to recall even the most basic of details. This can be frustrating, especially to a hard-working yet impatient mentor. No matter how rude Ravenpaw may sometimes seem, he genuinely means no harm. He wants only to get along with others, he just sometimes struggles to understand how to go about that. He tries his best all of the time, even when he is failing. He continually tries to learn from his mistakes, sometimes resorting to imitating what other cats do in the hopes that he would get it right. And, sometimes, he does do it right. But unfortunately, some cats just don’t feel like dealing with his “oddness”. It can be very isolating for him to feel different and not really want or know how to change. Ultimately, he wants acceptance for who he is, flaws and all. He just hasn’t found that many cats who are willing to do that just yet. Ravenpaw tends to have very vivid, strange nightmares. He finds himself waking in the night, frightened by some dark images that crept into his mind while he slept. Sometimes, he can feel frightened to go to sleep, unwilling to face whatever imagery gets conjured up that night. Falling asleep comes with a certain note of dread for this young tom. Often, these nightmares are reflective of his state of mind, his worries, stresses and fears. He wants to learn how to tame these nightmares, and sometimes when these dreams become lucid, he can adapt them to a more positive setting. But lucid dreams come rarely, and often Ravenpaw finds his sleep disturbed by these interruptions. It frustrates him that he feels tired a lot of the time due to low-quality sleep, but he powers through his days with fierce determination. At the very least, his nightmares give him a keener insight into his own psyche, better understanding where his troubles lie. He is very sensitive to his environment, easily disturbed by disliked textures, sounds and smells. Often, he is averse to being touched, finding it to be an alarming prospect. When extremely overwhelmed, he can either shut down or explode. In the first case, he simply goes mute and lies in a tightly curled ball, as far away from others as he can get. When exploding, he tends to attempt to escape the situation. Running blindly off into the territory is hardly safe, but all sense leaves his mind when he is especially overwhelmed. He can become angry, irritable, hissing at cats to just leave him alone. If any cat attempts to touch him during these moments, he will try to shove them away, bristling with terror. He is extremely embarrassed by these moments of senselessness, and wishes he understood why he felt that way and how to prevent it. His sensory sensitivity comes with some positives, though. There are certain textures and actions that bring him great comfort and stability. He enjoys things that are extremely soft, and likes to touch them to bring a calmness to his heart. When excited and happy, or stressed, these actions can increase dramatically. For example, when he’s extremely excited about something, he taps his paws and does a little skip. It’s rather adorable, but Cloudpaw sometimes finds it weird and nudges him to remind him not to do it. Trying to suppress actions like this, though, just make Ravenpaw feel more sensitive and stressed. He came into the world as the dark, skinny little son of Dovecloud and Harestrike, looking so much smaller and more helpless than his brother, Cloudkit. Having delivered her kits into the world, only days after becoming a mother of two, Dovecloud suffered a sudden seizure. As a newborn, the nameless tom was entirely oblivious to the tragedy that would overshadow the beginning of his life and his relationship with his father. Kindleflare tried to the best of her ability to save her sister’s life, but there was little she could do. An awful helplessness settled over all present as Dovecloud died, Harestrike screaming at her to save his mate. [attr="class","cp cp-chick"] KITHOOD The kits were shuffled morosely from their mother’s nest to Robinflame’s, both their kin and new mother. It was Kindleflare who named the kits, Harestrike being too distraught to even look at them. Ravenkit and Cloudkit recalled nothing about Dovecloud except a vague impression of her scent, and a desire to have gotten to know her before she died. Ravenkit loved and respected Robinflame, who was the only mother he had ever really known… but the inkling that something was missing weighed in the back of his mind as he wondered about Dovecloud, and if he would ever get to meet her.
His father, Harestrike, became convinced that Dovecloud’s death was the fault of his wrongdoing. Ravenkit tried many times to approach his father, but was again and again brushed away. He became insecure and sad, wondering if there was something so wrong with him that his father couldn’t so much as glance in his direction. As he grew, this sadness became tainted with a note of bitter frustration, angry with Harestrike for his distance while also blaming himself for it. After all, who would want to be known as the father to such a strange little kit? [attr="class","cp cp-certificate"] WARRIOR APPRENTICESHIP Ravenkit was named Ravenpaw on his sixth moon, and found himself struggling to keep up with the other apprentices. Galestorm was impatient with his difficulties, wanting to have the best apprentice in LightningClan. She was easily frustrated by Ravenpaw, putting him down whenever he made a mistake or failed. She wasn’t trying to antagonise him on purpose, but she desperately wanted him to improve so it would reflect well on her as a mentor, and she refused to adapt her training methods to the easily overwhelmed little tom. Ravenpaw quickly grew resentful of training with her, wanting more than anything else to simply be on his own away from the other apprentices and the tense social plane he had to navigate when he was with them. One day, on one of his wanderings, Ravenpaw found a dead magpie that had been tucked under an overhanging rock. On subsequent days, he visited that magpie out of curiosity, watching as it slowly decomposed and degenerated. Instead of being disgusted, Ravenpaw found himself intrigued by the process.
Thus sparked his curiosity in death and living things, much to the increasing dismay of Galestorm, who wanted more than anything else for her apprentice to just be normal. Several moons into his apprenticeship, Ravenpaw found another dead thing, but this time it had been savaged to the point of unrecognition. A raven. No matter how tattered it was, Ravenpaw was delighted to have gotten the chance to see his namesake. He took one of the feathers from the dead creature and has refused to part from it since. He likes to hold and toy with the feather when he feels stressed or deep in thought, and is extremely protective of it. He doesn’t let anyone take his feather and keeps it tucked away in the moss of his nest when he isn’t using it. SPECIAL SKILLS [attr="class","cp cp-document"] INCREDIBLE FACTUAL MEMORY Pros: Ravenpaw has near-perfect recall when it comes to facts revolving around his interests. He can go on and on and on about the types of birds he's seen, or the bones he's found, or the flowers he's encountered. The memories of these interests and the joys of learning about them allow him to absorb information about them like a little fact sponge.
Cons: Ravenpaw could tell you word for word what kind of worms a magpie likes to eat, but if you asked him what the first rule of the warrior code was, he'd draw a blank. Anything that does not capture his interest is instantly erased from his mind. He tries his best to pay attention to what you tell him, but if he's not interested from the start, he won't be able to recall it within the hour. SPECIAL WEAKNESSES [attr="class","cp cp-megaphone"] SENSORY OVERLOAD Pros: In some ways, Ravenpaw is sensory-seeking. The softness of a feather or the smoothness of a stone give him an indescribable sense of calm that it would not otherwise if he did not experience the senses the way he does. Sometimes, he will use these techniques to calm himself when the world becomes too much.
Cons: Sensory overload can completely overwhelm him and leave him in a non-verbal state. If he cannot escape a situation, he may shut down or melt down. A meltdown is a more frantic version of a shutdown. When in this state, Ravenpaw cannot make sense of his surroundings and he will be extremely anxious, sensitive and overwhelmed. Leading up to a shutdown/meltdown, he may become quiet or easily frustrated.
