Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." The warmth that the morning sun brought tempted RainClan's ever-friendly deputy to go to the place that he often met his love: the sun stones. Yet, today was not a day he could meet her. It had been only one moon-high since their last meeting, and they could not afford to see each other every day. But he wished.
Of course, Emberlight had duties as well. And the fresh-kill pile was beginning to look a little meager. Usually, RainClan did not have issues with food. Fish existed in the river at all times of the year, and usually apprentices sent off to learn how to hunt alongside their mentors brought back more than enough for the clan.
However, there would occasionally be spells in which the bounty of fish was smaller than usual. This was nothing abnormal, it simply required a little more effort on RainClan's members.
As he sat in the middle of camp, a few warriors and apprentices approached him. He seemed to have that effect on others. Or maybe he was just the deputy and looked like he had something important to say. Sometimes it was nice to flatter oneself.
"Skychaser, Wasptrike, Whisperstep, and Reedpelt. You four are strong hunters. Go out to the Salmon Falls and see if you can find anything. One to two big catches would feed a lot of the clan. Take the lead, Reedpelt." Reedpelt looked a little flustered to be leading the patrol, especially while Skychaser, a senior warrior was there. But Emberlight valued letting the youth learn through doing, a value he and his friend Skychaser shared. Emberlight knew the younger warrior could handle the responsibility.
The four warriors turned around and left the camp. Emberlight turned his head to the small crowd before him, a small smile forming on his lips. "I will lead a second patrol. Let's see if we can show them up with our kills." He winked, his eyes twinkling. "Russethawk, let's show these younglings how it's done. Poppypaw and Riverpaw, you will join us and learn hunting." A line of worry moved down Emberlight's spine as he looked again at the fresh-kill pile. He really hoped these two would pick up on hunting quickly -- the clan depended on it.
"We will go downstream to the main part of the river to find whatever slips away from the other patrol." Emberlight stood up and walked towards the outside of the camp at his usual pace: not too fast, not too slow. Just pleasant.
65 Moons. Deputy. RainClan Okay! Now begins the poison fish plot. First round will just be setting up and be formatted like a regular hunting thread. Second round, we will do the hunting and potentially have a hungry someone eat a fish. Third found will be noticing something is wrong and heading back to camp to find out that Reedpelt and Whisperstep are in the process of biting the bucket. Thanks for volunteering your characters to get this plot rolling!

"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory." ~Poppypaw Large ears flickered this way and that way as pale eyes stared at the familiar but not so familiar figures and faces of her clanmates. A stoic look on her face gave nothing away as she focused her attention on trying to gather as much detail as possible. Mind fogged up with unanswered questions about many a thing that littered through her mind. A voice broke through her muddled mind though making her pale blue eyes turn towards the figure. Tilting her head curiously she padded closer from where she had been sitting in the shadows not too far away. A patrol? A hunting patrol? A small smile tugged at her features as she joined the party silently. Seeing the familiar faces of the Rainclan deputy Emberlight. Her fellow den mate Riverpaw and her own mentor Russethawk gathering around. Poppypaw's gaze flicked quickly towards the fresh-kill pile too as she followed the others and frowned as she got the inkling feeling of unease from the deputy. She was silent for a minute as the others chattered away as they went for their hunting patrol. "Emberlight must be worried with the cold weather creeping in. Fish won't be as plentiful with the waters icing over the colder it gets." she figured to herself in her head as her eyes bore into the back of Emberlight's head from where the brown she-cat walked at the back of the patrol beside her mentor's flank.
"Emberlight, if we go downstream from the others to catch whatever they don't won't we be at a disadvantage at winning the most catches between their patrol and ours? We're pretty much trying to catch scraps someone leaves us. That's not very fun." she commented logically as she looked up at the sky above them as she walked; the cold ground beneath her paws making her shiver a little.
"This cold is going to kill me one day I swear. How am I even a Rainclan cat?" she joked nudging Riverpaw who had thicker fur than the thin and lanky apprentice Poppypaw was. Lanky and thin with large bat-like ears. She was great at tracking stuff down. Hunting she needed practice on but that only came from her distaste of getting wet and cold since she didn't possess the thickness of fur than others did. It was waterproof of course for the most part but because of how small she was her body didn't contain the right proportions it needed to keep herself warm and content. Shrugging she looked up towards her mentor and tilted her head.
"Shouldn't we like...I dunno, make a plan on how we are going to catch more than the others? We are young and light on our paws so Riverpaw and I would be great at distracting and maneuvering the fish towards you two if you guys would want to sit on some of the rocks to catch them as they pass perhaps? I mean, why work harder when you can work smarter right?" she commented blinking up at him.

[googlefont=Philosopher] i owned every second that this world could give Russethawk Father. Brother. Warrior. Of RainClan. i saw so many places, the things that i did Poppypaw had a good head on her shoulders, Russethawk noticed. And she was never afraid to speak her mind around him or the deputy; of course, they were two of the friendliest, most approachable members of RainClan (not to mention Russethawk believed he personally exuded a kind of fun, grandfatherly charm), and that must have made speaking up much easier.
Catching Emberlight's wink, Russethawk grinned, the fur around his muzzle and throat a more pronounced grayish-white tint than it had been in his younger days. Old age was catching up, but the aches and pains of a cat approaching elder's age did nothing to dampen his personality. Emerald eyes still sparkled with vitality, and though grief had scalded him in recent moons, he was not so broken that he could not enjoy the sunshine on his fur.
"Not necessarily, Poppypaw. Some fish like different parts of the river. Smaller ones can flit through lower waters without issue." Russethawk's gaze swept along the direction the other patrol had departed for the Salmon Falls. "We might get a few smaller salmon, but I'd leave the hefty catches to Reedpelt's group."
Russethawk cocked his head, considering Poppypaw's attempt at strategizing. "Could work, could work. What do you think, Emberlight?" He didn't want either apprentice learning any bad habits, like forgetting to be careful about letting their shadow fall across the water, but different situations called for different methods. Poppypaw was smart enough to know the difference. He didn't know the other apprentice well - Riverpaw, younger brother of Silverstar - but he was open to letting the new 'paw try something outside his usual lessons.
with every broken bone, i swear i lived

[googlefont=Cinzel:900][googlefont=PT Sans][googlefont=Archivo Narrow:700][googlefont=Playfair Display] if i could begin to behalf of what you think of mei could do about anythingRIVERPAW 6 moons // rainclan // apprentice [attr="class","rivertxt"] [attr="class","rivertfl"]R iverpaw relished the feeling of the sun on his blue-grey fur. He half-wished that instead of fishing, they could just nap by the water today. Wouldn't that just be... amazing? But the concept of being the one to catch the biggest fish, especially in front of a pretty she-cat like Poppypaw, well... that was definitely more tempting. So bursting with confidence was he that the thoughts of catching a pike genuinely played around in his mind. He had never even seen a pike, but he bet he could handle it. “Don't worry, Poppypaw.” He meowed to her, trotting ahead with his tail in the air. “If me and you work as a team, I bet we can catch anything!” The competitive nature to the patrol had lifted Riverpaw's spirits. With a conspirital wink, Emberlight had led them off into the territory, the music of the river enticing them onward. The seriousness of the lesson did not occur to Riverpaw, as he had never really known true hunger. Lilygleam had kept him well-fed in the nursery, and his spoilt little stomach knew peckish rumbles at worse. “We will go downstream to the main part of the river to find whatever slips away from the other patrol.” Emberlight explained, the sun dappling along his pale orange pelt. Riverpaw tilted his head in confusion. Poppypaw seemed to have the same thoughts he did, raising her little brown face to the sky. “Emberlight, if we go downstream from the others to catch whatever they don't won't we be at a disadvantage at winning the most catches between their patrol and ours? We're pretty much trying to catch scraps someone leaves us. That's not very fun.” Though she was complaining, she didn't grumble or whine. In fact, she relayed her point very maturely, something that made Riverpaw glance at her, impressed. “Yeah, won't that set us up for failure?” He agreed with Poppypaw, frowning at the thought of being beaten by the other patrol. “I mean, we'd mostly be hunting their failed fish. So they get more chances to catch fish than we do.” Not to mention that their patrol consisted of only two warriors. He didn't know about Poppypaw, but Frogchaser hadn't taken him fishing much. His mentor had picked up on his sensitivity and hoped that battle-training might toughen him up a little first. The grizzled old Russethawk grinned at Emberlight, looking thoughtful. “Not necessarily, Poppypaw. Some fish like different parts of the river. Smaller ones can flit through lower waters without issue.” He answered, and Riverpaw followed his gaze in the direction of the distant salmon falls. “We might get a few smaller salmon, but I'd leave the hefty catches to Reedpelt's group.”Riverpaw bristled at the prospect of basically conceding defeat to Reedpelt's patrol. “That's not fair! I want to catch big salmon.” He muttered, blue eyes clouding with disappointment. He cheered up a little when Poppypaw bumped his shoulder, offering her a playful smile. “This cold is going to kill me one day I swear. How am I even a Rainclan cat?” He snorted in response, giving her a purr. “You're cold? Maybe you've got cold blood like the fish!” He nudged her back, brightening up slightly. Big salmon or no big salmon, it was going to be fun to hunt with Poppypaw. “Shouldn't we like...I dunno, make a plan on how we are going to catch more than the others? We are young and light on our paws so Riverpaw and I would be great at distracting and maneuvering the fish towards you two if you guys would want to sit on some of the rocks to catch them as they pass perhaps? I mean, why work harder when you can work smarter right?” Poppypaw theorised, and Riverpaw raised his head with excitement. “That sounds like a great idea! Poppypaw, you're a genius.” He flicked her with his blue-grey tail, his matching pale blue eyes gleaming. To his surprise, Russethawk and Emberlight didn't immediately accept the idea. Little did Riverpaw know, this was because the more experienced warriors preferred to think before committing to a strategy, to weigh out other possible ideas or the consequences of the plan. To Riverpaw, it seemed they were doubting Poppypaw and Riverpaw, which made him twitch his whiskers with impatience. “Could work, could work. What do you think, Emberlight?” Russethawk turned to the pale ginger deputy. | | [attr="class","rivnotes"]notes Riverpaw going out of his way to try and make Poppypaw like him lmao. |
