THEIR JOURNEY

Lightningflash had never asked for an apprentice. In fact, he had never even had a mentor, so he hadn't the faintest idea how to even begin with Elderpaw. Birdstar's announcement of the mentor and apprentice pairing came as a shock to all, including Lightningflash himself. He became a reluctant teacher to a secretly reluctant student, one who he barely knew. A sense of panic loomed over Lightningflash's head as the desire to please rose in his heart. He didn't want Elderpaw's kin to be upset with him. He didn't want Elderpaw to be taught by a cat he may feel ashamed of.

But Birdstar assured him that this was a calculated choice, and Lightningflash didn't want to disappoint him. So he set about figuring out how he was going to instruct this young cat in battle, in hunting, in interacting with other cats. And maybe, just maybe, under Lightningflash's tutorage, Elderpaw may learn to peel away from the harsh, prejudiced attitudes of his family. Maybe, from him, Elderpaw could realise that no cat is defined by their blood or where their paws once stepped.
