As the leaves began to change on the distant trees of the rising mountainside, Birdstar looked over his Clan and smiled at how leggy and restless the kittens in his nursery were becoming. He spent most of the day simply observing cats coming and going. Seasons changed, kits aged, and Birdstar realized that he was approaching another milestone in his role as Leader. It'd been six moons since that fateful moment that changed every bit of StoneClan. He no longer felt nervous about speaking in front of everyone's watching eyes that gleamed inside the open hill. It was time he named these kits to be apprentices.
He headed over to the fresh-kill pile to think over names. He chewed through bones contemplatively, and anyone joining the leader for some food would've seen his face screwed up rather strangely. Running a tongue across his chops, Birdstar finally decided on the mentors for these young minds.
Plodding to the Rock Pile, he called upon the familiar words: "All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather at the Pile!" His yowl echoed out of the top of the mound StoneClan cats called camp. There were lots of apprentices to be named so he wanted everyone here for this. The dusk patrol should've just come back, too.
Birdstar slowly turned to the nursery queens and bowed deeply to them for their service. His emerald eyes descended to the kits and beckoned them forward a little. Then, he began the ritual, starting with Wrenkit first. If he made her wait, she'd probably start getting antsy and wander off before she touched noses with her mentor.
"Wrenkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Wrenpaw. Your mentor will be Cobrashadow. He was my mentor, and I hope"--he looked over at his half-brother--"he will pass down all he knows on to you. Cobrashadow, you are ready to take on an apprentice once more. You have shown yourself to be tough and hardy. You will be the mentor of Wrenpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to her." He hoped that Cobrashadow's breed of discipline could hone the rebellious apprentice into a fine warrior.
Allowing the two to approach each other, he then moved on to the other apprentices-to-be, naming each of them in turn. "Yewkit, Bonekit, Elderkit, Marigoldkit, Condorkit." He congratulated them all on reaching six moons as well. "From now on, you will bear the names of Yewpaw, Bonepaw, Elderpaw, Marigoldpaw, and Condorpaw until you become warriors." As he said this, his head drifted over the crowd of faces until he saw the chosen cat in question.
"Blackclaw! You are ready to take on an apprentice, so you will mentor Yewpaw. You have received excellent training from Coppertalon, and you have shown yourself to be loyal and hardworking. I expect you to pass on all you know to Yewpaw.
"Honeynose, you are ready to take on an apprentice. Your hunting abilities are well-known amongst the Clan, so you will be the mentor of Bonepaw and pass on all you know to him.
"Lightningflash." At this, Birdstar paused to hold the tom's gaze, and he gave him a small nod, as if reassure Lightningflash that this was done with purpose. "I know you are ready to take on an apprentice." He could not say the ritual words that praised Lightningflash's mentor, for the lonerborn had none. Instead, Birdstar lifted up his chin regally. "You possess rich experience unique to yourself, and you've proven to me that you are committed and loyal to this Clan. I expect you to pass on all you know to Elderpaw."
"Ivyflare, I believe it is time you trained an apprentice now, so you will mentor Marigoldpaw. Your mentor granted you dignified discipline in your days as an apprentice, so I wish for you to pass on what you learned from him onto this young mind. You've shown yourself to be cunning and confident. Good luck, you two." Birdstar gave an encouraging smile to Marigoldpaw and nodded her over to the older tabby.
"Coppertalon, you are ready for another apprentice. I commend you on your performance against the eagles You are known for your strength and your attention to detail. You will mentor Condorpaw, and I trust you to pass on all you know."
As all of the mentors and their new apprentices met each other face-to-face, chanting of their new names all filled the air, and Birdstar lifted up his yowl with all of them.
