Birdstar told his patrol to get ready and eat if necessary. Walking to the fresh-kill pile, he took a sparrow for himself and bit through the small hollow bones, refreshing his strength before they ventured up the Bouldered Slope. This part of the world was technically not StoneClan territory so who knew what kind of creatures they could expect to find. He never assigned patrols up the cliffs and into the mountains that surrounded the whole valley. The slopes functioned as a border of their own. Never in Birdstar's life had he needed to confront a RainClan or LightningClan cat for going around the normal borders and attempting to slide down the slopes for some shenanigans. Now, they would be climbing up the slopes, hoping to find the source of all the landslides. Not that Birdstar knew what he would do once he found the source. The rockslides were a force of nature no cat could control.
He gathered Viperstrike, Lightningflash, and Herondive to him and addressed the Clan once more. He gave orders for them to follow in case the worse would happen. His eyes avoided Valiantstride as he said this, feeling guilty at the idea of the old deputy having to suffer naming a successor a second time. No. Birdstar vowed to return. Even if his patrol couldn't change anything about the rockslides, they could still figure out the best way to prevent StoneClan suffering anymore casualties from them. They would return whole and victorious. "Let's go," he told the trio.
Slipping quickly out of StoneClan camp, Birdstar led the patrol through the mossy meadows, allowing his paws to taste their softness one last time before he inflicted cruel punishments on them. He saw the strata immediately as the cliffside rose tall and jagged before they'd even left the meadow. Boulders not covered in moss lay ahead. Birdstar wound around them. They were many sizes and shapes, some of them crowded close together like StoneClan's own camp.
"We may find other cats out here. Whether they're loners or the Tribe, we should treat them with respect. We'll keep our distance; attack only if we're attacked, and investigate if they need help," he informed his three clanmates. Birdstar had done plenty of wandering around these boulders when he was younger, but the moment their paws hit the narrow path that sloped up the mountainside, they were hitting unexplored territory.
The matte-gray tom looked back at Lightningflash. Unlike some of the more xenophobic cats, like his own father, Birdstar felt that outsiders brought exceptional knowledge to the Clan. "Lightningflash, did you come around these parts before you were with us?" he asked curiously. He would let the tuxedo tom lead the way if Lightningflash was more familiar with this place than he was. Birdstar wouldn't let his own pride get in the way.
