The fog-laden air hung around them like a thick blanket of moisture, heavy, comforting. They could not see very well through the milky white mist, green eyes a pair of corporal, bodiless dots in the mysterious environment. But they liked it this way, for it allowed them to feel alone. And unlike many cats they knew, Fogcloud loved to be alone. They had learned to savour the joys of their own company, that and the company of the sun and the moon, whichever of the two celestial bodies joined them on their journeys. Today, it was neither. Fogcloud could not see the sun behind the thick cloud cover. It was as though the world stopped a few tail-lengths away, abruptly cut off and dropping into nonexistence. The mud was soft beneath their paws, and it would be some bother to try and clean them later, but they would worry about that then.
The river came into their line of sight, emerging from the mist like an old friend. With a smile playing across their broad face, Fogcloud settled into position at the edge of the water, muddy paws resting firmly on the rocks at the shore. A shape flitted just beneath the surface, darting up to snatch flies that had taken advantage of the brief respite from the rain. The hunters, not knowing they were being hunted. A large calico cream, grey and white paw flashed into the water, hooked claws scooping the scaled beast from the river. The stunned fish landed beside them, flopping helplessly. Pinning it down with claws unsheathed, Fogcloud quickly finished it off with a fierce but merciful snap of their jaws. A fine catch. They were proud, and would look forward to giving it to Poppytail, a little heartfelt gift.
