curiosity is not a sin...
...but we should exercise caution with our curiosity
Shadowchaser
"There, that should hold through the night. Come find me if you're still feeling pain in the morning." Shadowchaser's tongue felt heavy and sluggish in his own mouth, but the seriousness, the conviction that came with a StarClan-given duty kept his actual words from turning into mush.
Shadowchaser was tired. Shadowchaser was beyond tired, and had entered a state of restlessness that would have worried others if they weren't in the middle of a crisis. If I could just close my eyes for a moment... That desperate thought traipsed across his mind, and Shadowchaser felt his limbs ache with the need to simply lay down. But he braced himself with breath and resolve, willing his focus to anchor itself to the moment and not drift away into a sleep-deprived daze.
The yellow-green eyes staring back at him reflected concern. "I know you have your paws full, Shadowchaser. Don't forget to rest, as well. There are other healers here." The TreeClan warrior craned his neck to sniff the poultice that had just been applied to a gash in his shoulder, rising gingerly out of his seated position.
Shadowchaser blinked, feeling a rush of guilt that a cat not even of his own Clan had noticed his fatigue. There was something familiar about the tom, though - beyond the general sensation that he'd seen him once or twice at a gathering in his lifetime.
As if reading his thoughts, the tom's maw twitched into a subtle smile, and he nodded in the direction of Sagepaw speaking with Skyteller in the distance. "My daughter."
The NightClan healer's golden eyes widened in understanding, and he purred gently. "You must be very proud, she's a talented healer. I'm glad to work alongside her."
Sprucefur did not purr back, but he didn't need to. The pride was evident in the old tom's eyes, the subtle force of a father's love present in every beat of Sprucefur's heart. "I am. Take care, Shadowchaser. Thank you." In the quiet dignified way of a warrior who had seen and done and lived through so much, Sprucefur carefully made his way through the throng of cats in search of his mate, Feathercloud.
That left the slender chestnut-furred tom to sway a little on his paws, a lull in activity at last overtaking the young medicine cat. Just rest for a bit... just a little... He couldn't disguise the sense of guilt he felt; everywhere around him, shell-shocked cats were still reeling from the evacuation and the devastating earthquake. Grieving over cats who had not been found, or cats who had even died right in front of them. It was a nightmare of tremendous proportions, and Shadowchaser wished he had the strength of ten cats, that he might continue to serve the cats of the valley with all his might.
But... He was only one creature.
With a tired droop of his tail, Shadowchaser slunk into the far corner, finding a nest that smelled faintly of his immediate Clanmates, and dropped into it. The healer could have groaned in relief; it felt so good to give his paws a rest. A subtle movement caught his eye, someone approaching from the mouth of the cavern entrance. Guilt lanced Shadowchaser's peaceful expression, and he half rose, trying to rally himself to immediately take care of whatever needed his attention - but it wasn't necessary. The cat approaching was his kin.
