She was excited and scared, anxious and nervous. All of the good and bad was swirling around in this newly named apprentice's mind, that she had no idea what she was going to be doing today. But, from listening to what other warriors and apprentices have talked about, today would be the tour around the territory. Getting to learn what is going to be where and what to watch out for, right? This is what made her nervous, she wanted that to be today, but she wasn't sure that it was going to be today.[break][break]

She had poked her head into the warriors den once she was done with her morning chores, only to have seen that Stoatclaw wasn't there. So, that meant that she had to be somewhere. Was she waiting for Currantpaw? She didn't know really, and it was making her even more nervous, because she really didn't want to be late. As she turned and left the mouth of the Warrior den and looked around the camp real fast. Most of the other apprentices were out and about now as well, going right to where they needed to be.[break][break]

Currantpaw seemed to be the only one lost and confused. This was a great start to her apprenticeship; late, lost and confused. She soon caught the sight of her mentor, and she looked at her for a moment before she rushed toward Stoatclaw. After a few seconds of being right by Stoatclaw, she thought for a moment. "Sorry I am late... I... have no excuse..." She hung her head as she waited to know what Stoatclaw was going to think on it.

Stoatclaw had been seeing someone. A tom. From another clan. They had met at Starclan's Claws-- an ironic place to be carrying on a forbidden relationship-- and had talked the night away. It was safe to say that Stoatclaw was infatuated, and now all she could think about was his jet-black pelt and soft, golden eyes. 

The young warrior had recently been given an apprentice, Currantpaw, and despite her new obsession with Panthercall, Stoatclaw was determined to do right by the young she-cat and give her the best apprenticeship she could. No tom was going to get in the way of her being her best warrior self! 

That morning the other apprentices and their mentors had started their training early, but Stoatclaw had seen her apprentice get a head start on her chores and decided to leave her be. It was nice that she did not have to monitor every little thing about Currantpaw and that the apprentice could be trusted to take initiative. 

Soon, though, Stoatclaw knew they would have to go so she went looking for the young apprentice, only to be found by her. "Sorry? No excuse?" Stoatclaw purred, "Nonsense! You were doing your chores, and I didn't say we had to leave first thing in the morning, did I? So you're not late, and you have an excellent reason." she could tell that Currantpaw might be a bit nervous. "Come on, let's get going. We'll do a tour of the territory and maybe we'll find a mouse or two along the way."


She led her apprentice out of Nightclan camp and took her first to the Branch Trail. They stopped under the low-hanging branches, "This is the Branch Trail. We'll be learning how to climb and ambush from these branches, but it's also a good place to find honey...in new-leaf and green-leaf anyways. Our medicine cats love honey because it's good for sore throats I think, or something like that. Honestly," her whiskers twitched with amusement, "I like it because it tastes good. Have you ever had honey before?" 

She took Currantpaw to the border with Treeclan, "Take a good whiff. That's Treeclan's scent. We share a border with them here. Why don't you help me re-mark some of the border?" 

The tabby warrior marked a few trees along the border, "Let me know if you have any questions for me, by the way. Questions are a good way to learn!"

Female Apprentice of NightClan

Just the mere fact that her mentor wasn't mad at her for being late was a nice thing. But, it also worried Currantpaw because did that mean that her mentor was going to be lax on things all of the time? But, the moment Currant heard why it was okay that she was late, a small but shy smile showed up on the apprentice's mouth. She nodded though and soon followed after Stoatclaw. "Okay!" There was some excitement in her vocals, but it wasn't enough to hide the fact that she was still just a little bit nervous still.

The entire time that they were walking, Currantpaw's eyes were going over everything that they passed. She was taking in the sights, and even though it was leaf-fall, everything still looked so pretty to the tortoiseshell she-cat. She nearly ran right into Stoatclaw though when the older she-cat stopped walking. She thankfully stopped just in time, and she looked at the branch trail. The branches were low-hanging, and this was the moment that Currantpaw was glad that she was tiny.

She shook her head though soon enough as she looked at Stoatclaw from the low-hanging branches. "No, I haven't. Maybe when it's growing again I can though." She looked back at the Branch Trail, trying to memorize the smell of the area as well as what it looked like. What kind of road marks were there, and what was it that she would be able to use to know where she was in case she got lost. When Stoatclaw mentioned moving again, Currantpaw was fast on her paws, making sure that she wasn't getting separated.

The moment that they reached the TreeClan border, she took in a deep breath as she listened to Stoatclaw. "TreeClan learns to fight in trees too right? So.. if we fight on the border, what kind of advantage would we have against them?" Don't tell her to ask questions, because she will. Currantpaw walked with Stoatclaw as they re-marked the border. She was curious on the answers of the questions that she just threw at Stoatclaw.

"TreeClan learns to fight in trees too right? So.. if we fight on the border, what kind of advantage would we have against them?"



Stoatclaw’s whiskers twitched at her apprentice’s question. “We can fight them in the trees, unlike other clans and, if nothing else, we know their tactics. If we were to have a confrontation on the border we would assign a warrior to watch the branches. There’s a difference between a branch moving in the wind and one moving because a cat is sitting on it.” She padded along the border, looking up at the branches as she spoke. They were calm. “You need to ask yourself: what is the wind? Where is it blowing? If the branches aren’t moving in a way you would expect, either you have enemy or you have prey.”



Many moons had passed since the war with Treeclan finally subsided. Stoatclaw was young at the time, but she knew the war had been intense. Many battles had been fought on this exact border. The tabby she-cat dug her claws into the loamy soil, “We need to be alert, but luckily we haven’t had a battle with Treeclan for a while so you and I have time to train. A good warrior is prepared for battle,” she stopped and turned to look her apprentice in the face, “but she does not look forward to it. Ideally you drive your enemy away, but if that doesn’t work you injure them. Killing should be the absolute last resort. Do you understand?”



Stoatclaw remembered being an apprentice and not being able to wait until she could go in to battle. It was all she could think of, all she ever wanted, and she could not imagine why the warriors were never as keen. She had heard battle stories of gore and glory as a kit and as an apprentice and thought that it was some badge of honor, that a good warrior lives for battle and nothing else. Her first battle settled those questions for her.



“Battle is a nasty business.” She warned her young apprentice, “Respect it. But don’t covet it.”
