She felt so empty. It was losing her mate and most of her litter all over again, but this time she didn't have two kits left to fill the void and give her reason to keep living. Moonfeather felt her dark thoughts gathering in a swirl of the past and the present. In her dreams she felt something large settle in next to her. She didn't open her eyes but she knew the scent and it hurt her heart. "Bramblebrush." Her voice came out on a sob, an old wound to her heart that had never healed as she had yet to really find someone who made her feel like he had.
"My sweet Moonfeather. Its too soon for you to join us on the other side. Go back to our kits, they still need you more than I do. Don't worry, I'll look after the ones on this side until you get here. I'll wait, we'll wait. Please be happy and take care of yourself."
"The kits are grown now, they don't need me. Nobody needs me anymore. What sort of queen can't keep her kits alive even inside her body? I failed them."
"But then your grandkits will never know you, never hear from the source all that you went through to save their mother and her sister, all you have sacrificed for your family. They will not have you to learn from, and you know Amberwing is wrong. I'm sorry, but if you come now then she will turn those sweet innocent kits into her sort of monster. Please save them, if not for yourself than for me."
Moonfeather didn't want to do as he asked, but Bramblebrush never asked her for things, he had always been her strength and support, the one who made everything okay in the world. And he wanted her to go back. She could only agree.
The grey she-cat snapped awake then winced as she realized just how close she had to have come to dying. Falconstorm was sleeping next to her, and she was still nestled in the nursery near Amberwing. She guessed she hadn't been strong enough to be moved, or else she would have been in the medicine den.
She froze as she heard her daughter's voice, realizing the other didn't know she was awake despite how she'd moved. She must have been unconscious for a long time. She would have spoken, but the words she heard from Amberwing turned her blood cold and told her that no one else was awake as she spoke softly to her kits.
"My perfect, pure little warriors. I'll make sure each of you learns what it really means to be strong, and what it will take to help me overthrow the current leadership of TreeClan. Pumafang may not be as bad as Lionstar, but he isn't strong enough. Your father should be the leader, and I his deputy to strengthen TreeClan into a force that our enemies will never threaten again. I'll ask them to let us train you, and find someone worthy to train the third. Everything will be perfect, and when you are ready we will rule this clan. Don't worry, if you die you will be avenged, and our purpose will not fail. I'll make sure of that. TreeClan will never hurt a she-cat with her kits again, never threaten to steal away kits for a queen too young to know better, never again cow a confident she-cat into a shell of her previous self. We'll make them pay. In blood."
Moonfeather shook in both cold and fear, never hearing that exact tone from her daughter before. She had seen her attack Aspenfire before, had seen her wreck havoc in a fight and come back grinning and happy to have shed blood. It pained her to realize that, despite giving it her best, her kit was not who she had once been. Her mind was warped, her idea of right and wrong destroyed. And scarily enough, some of her words made sense to Moonfeather. Her darkest thoughts, her deepest worries for the future, but none of these would ever see the light of day.
She realized then, with a growing sense of dread, that she would have to get Amberwing to give the kits to her to raise and then get them out of TreeClan and away from their parents. She wasn't going to let her grandkits become the monster her daughter was, wasn't going to let her teach them to hate and hurt and let them potentially be killed for a quest that was hers. No. She had to make plans. And she would.
