Growing up as a kit, there was never a scenario where Birchfrost had imagined he'd be a warrior without Snowpaw, or Asterpaw for that matter. Even as an apprentice, he'd always imagined they'd do their silent vigil together, but it wouldn't be so silent because surely they'd be whispering to each other under their breath long before dawn arrived. He never thought he'd feel guilty to have earned his warrior name prior to his siblings, but he did, and while trudging around camp with his head down it occurred to him he also never thought this was what his warriorhood would be like. Was was he going to do? What could he do? Everytime he wanted to talk to Snowpaw, she seemed to be making herself busy elsewhere, and he had no clue if he had awful timing or if she was avoiding him.
He felt overwhelmed, and didn't feel close enough to any of his fellow warriors to share what he was feeling, and before this his go-to confidant had always been Snowpaw. What was he supposed to do now?
The young tom sighed, not feeling very hungry anymore as he turned away from the fresh-kill pile and, miraculously, his gaze landed on his mother - Appleshade. Of course! Why hadn't he thought of his mother immediately? She'd know what to do, or at least make him feel a little better. With purpose, he snatched up a squirrel from the pile and padded in her direction, waving his tail at her in greeting before setting the prey down in front of her. "I picked out something from the last patrol that came in, so this one's dry - unlike that poor soaked sparrow no one's going to take," he meowed, his tone good-humored. "Do you want to share, Mum?" I have a lot on my mind, he wanted to add, but had the feeling she might know that simply by looking at him. He felt and probably looked distraught all the time.
