Bright blue eyes narrowed as RainClan's deputy looked straight at Waspstrike, uttering a "general statement" to stay out of fights. Yeah right. Waspstrike knew that Emberlight was directly telling him not to start anything. As if Waspstrike was the only one to start anything! Waspstrike knew that the only reason Emberlight was issuing this warning to Waspstrike was to make the young warrior feel like he himself was the bad guy. 

But it was Emberlight who was the bad guy. Emberlight, who had baited his mother into going out for a walk, then who had just stood there while she died. 

Nothing Emberlight said could ever be taken seriously by Waspstrike anymore. Not after being the reason his mother was dead.

The young bengal scowled at Emberlight, then turned around and head towards the assembly of cats from other clans. Was he looking for someone to release some tension at? Was he looking for someone to bait him? Or was he looking for someone he felt like he had known for a long time? Even if they were enemies. 

The slender form of a black smoke tabby caught his eye, and the putrid scent of frogs and moss hit his nose shortly after. Wearing the scar on his left brow proudly, the young warrior walked up to Gracklestrike. 

"Hey, frog-breath," he called, watching as the NightClan warrior turned around to see him. "Looks like you and I are name buddies. I'm called Waspstrike now." Ever the leer in his voice, although this time, the conversation could go many ways.

Waspstrike had developed something of a respect for both Graywolf and Gracklestrike. Their willingness to fight was not one he found often. But still, it wasn't difficult to get angry at the thought of them. It wouldn't take much ill-will out of Gracklestrike for the impulsive bengal tom to lash out. Even at a gathering.

Catching her uncle's gaze, he muttered a warning. Keep her claws in line or suffer the consequences of facing their matriarch's wrath. Gracklestrike a devotee of Darkstar feared not her leader's anger but that of her grandmother. The storm-eyed she-cat would sooner have her fur to line her nest then allow her to cause a scene at the gathering.

It seemed fate had another plan.

'Hey, frog-breath' Her head whipped to look at Wasp-paw. Eyes narrowed to deadly slits, annoyance quickly brewing to anger. Before she could utter a retort, the fish-face plain stated they shared a similar warrior name. It seems the little fish had finally grown up. She tried to ignore the fact he looked every bit a warrior. The scar across his brow adding to it.

"I'll consider it a sign of respect, but you will always be fox-lengths behind me," She sneered, tail flicking. Her tension with Waspstrike had little fuel in the past moons. All her attention focused on righting the wrongs done by TreeClan.

The fire he sparked in her belly would feed her ambition. She'd earn herself a new scar, something to brag to him about. "You know where to find me if you want another lesson. I'll remind you why I'll always be the better warrior," Her taunt came with less aggressive intent and more of hurtful teasing. She would meet him anytime, day or night, for another spar. A quick tussle to ease tension from her limbs and quell the fire he stirred.

"-but you will always be fox-lengths behind me."

The words were enough to send an involuntary shiver down his spine, leaving his fur raised ever so slightly. Had that shiver come out of anger? Fear? Awareness? Whatever it was, it made Waspstrike incredibly uncomfortable with the she-cat in front of him. Her comment was so lackadaisical, but there was so much context behind it. Context that only he, Gracklestrike, and Graywolf were aware of. 

But one day he would show up, and he wouldn't need anyone to help him beat those NightClan warrioresses to a pulp. Not Waverunner. Not Skychaser. Not Gullswoop. 

His blood was heating up the more she teased. He could feel his pulse in his paws, in his ears, in his nose. Hyper-aware of everything around him. Waspstrike could live up to his namesake right now and show Gracklestrike that he meant business. 

But now, there was something stopping him from attacking the warrior at a gathering. It was...shame? Or even guilt?

Whatever it was, it was preventing Waspstrike from doing what everyone always expected him to do. The only one who expected the best of him was his mother, Sparrowfoot. Maybe he just wanted to make her proud as she watched down from StarClan.

Or maybe he just didn't want to get his tail beat by both Grackstrike and Silverstar. 

Waspstrike's mind was racing for what felt like forever as he tried to put his thoughts in order. And, turns out, it was forever.

At Gracklestrike's response, Waspstrike had stood their, a look of utter confusion on his face for a noticeably uncomfortable amount of time. 

Snapping back into it, the tom narrowed his eyes and looked into Gracklestrike's. "You seem to forget that even the little fish can grow and devour the frogs it once feared." Walking closer, Waspstrike scrunched his nose up at the overwhelming scent of NightClan. She was not a better warrior than he was. She was not a better warrior than he was.

Despite the fact that she and her clan had gone to actual war, letting her prove her strength to the clan. Despite the fact that she was unfazed by his comments, only matching his intensity with her own cool fire. 

He was the better warrior. He had to be the better warrior.

Her brow furrowed, waiting for a quick snapped response. Not for the confused look on Waspstrike's face. Had she broken the new warrior with her reply? A surge of pride warmed her chest, funny how easy it was to distract him. She noted that for future spars. Hold on to that information for a much-needed advantage. Even if he stood a bit shorter then her, Gracklestrike learned many moons ago never to underestimate a cat because of their size.

His reply brought a chuckle to her chest. She barely managed to muffle it, instead, her tail flicked and ears twitched. He was quickly proving to be an amusing tom-cat even if a bit annoying.

"So you admit I scared you? Did I creep into your nightmares and steal away your sweet dreams, little fish?" She taunted easily. Putting a bit more space between him and her, Gracklestrike stood tall. Green eyes alive with the ego boosted provided by his words. "I hope no one in your clan knows you dream of a NightClan she-cat," Smooth with her words, Gracklestrike flicked her feathered tail just enough to tease at Waspstrike's ear. A rare moment of non-aggressive contact.

To be honest, Gracklestrike had materialized in Waspstrike's dreams every now and then. Sometimes, they would fight. She always won, and it frustrated him greatly. He would always be so close to finally besting her, and then she would go in for the killing blow. And then he was awake.

Other times, they would just sit there, staring at each other in uncomfortable silence. Waspstrike didn't like these dreams. They were too real. 

The worst ones, the true nightmares, that Waspstrike suffered, were unlike any classic nightmare. His mother stared at him. He would stare back, unable to move towards her. But the longer he focused on her face, the more he realized it was shifting into the face of one of the two NightClan vixens who always managed to step on his toes. Those dreams left Waspstrike waking in a cold sweat, confused and afraid.

But Gracklestrike would never hear of this. And he could not give her the satisfaction of looking weak. 

Defiant bright blue eyes looked to the NightClan she-cat. He forced a smirk on his face, despite the fact that his blood was boiling underneath it all. Every word that Gracklestrike had said had made him angry. Angry, right? Anger was a strong emotion. That's the emotion he was feeling.

His claws dug into the ground. He was a warrior now. He practiced restraint. But he was clearly incredibly bothered. "You think you're so scary?" He spat out his words. He could only restrain himself so much.

"There are things a lot scarier than a stinking toad!" A little too much emotion in his words. Hopefully Gracklestrike would only take it as him trying to insult her, ignoring the raging storm swirling around in the small tom's frame.

'Oh Waspstrike, you are so easy to read,' The thought only crossed her mind, because she saw a bit of a mirror of herself in him. They both walked a fine line between control and rage. It only took a flick of a rival's tail or a full battle cry to send them into a rush. Gracklestrike loved the rush, the blood pumping in her ears. Claws ready to sink in deep. Fighting was her addiction, Waspstrike had proved several times to offer her that much-needed fix.

He had done so enough times she found it difficult to want to maim him as she was taught. If one day she went too far and Waspstrike never recovered, she'd be without her little fish, her little plaything.

Distracted by her thoughts of him, Gracklestrike let slip a purr that ended with a growl. A hardly pleasant sound, but the closest thing Gracklestrike could produce to a purr.

"Meet me at the border and I'll be sure to remind you why I haunt your dreams," That same growl-purr seeped into her words.

The well-known voice of her grandmother called for her, respectful as she had become. Gracklestrike parted from Waspstrike back to her clanmates. However, once she settled down beside them, her eyes found their way back to Waspstrike. Watching him, admiring her reflection.
