Ebonyheart, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams "You're not going out alone, are you?"
The familiar sharp and proper tone of the black and white senior warrioress rang within the fluffy black ears of the younger Stoneclan Medicine Cat as she padded through the snow towards the exit of the camp. The large feline's movements paused as she turned to face the more slender form of her mother.
"Of course not mother." The younger she-cat's fluffy nub tail twitched as she responded in a proper tone of her own after giving a respectful dip of her head towards the older feline. Though, there was a slight retort within her tone at the end of her retort to Rabbitfur.
The older she-cat flickered her tail, green gaze flittering with amusement for just a moment before slipping back into an unreadable pool of emerald as she watched her daughter for a moment before Ebonyheart parted her jaws to continue.
"Birdtalon will be accompanying me." The fluffy black she-cat twitched her whiskers as a few small snow flurries landed on the thin limbs. The actual coldness of the weather didn't nearly bother her with the length and density of her dark coat.
"Don't you think you should wait for Birdtalon then, daughter?" Rabbitfur responded quickly, her tone neutral as she lightly berated her offspring for her behavior. Though Ebonyheart had an affinity for following most of the rules, her gifted independent nature made it difficult for her to follow others.
It took some control to keep from rolling her pale green pools at Rabbitfur as the senior warrior merely gave a flicker of her long tail. "I'm glad he's going with you, he's a very exceptional warrior." It wasn't often her mother gave high praise like free prey, but it wasn't a surprise as the gray tom seemed worthy of respect.
"At least he has proper manners, which is more than I can say for some of his kin." Ebonyheart spoke bluntly as she lowered her haunches to sit in the snow, awaiting for the older gray warrior to meet her at the camp entrance, tail nub flickering.
"Ebonyheart!" Rabbitfur turned her head to face her daughter, unable to keep the wriggle of amusement from her whiskers. The large black she-cat was known for having the temperament of an elderly feline despite the youth of her existence. "Little rabbit, you should really learn to hold your tongue sometimes." Though she attempted to scold the young healer, there was a flash of amusement within the older she-cat's gaze for a moment.
"It's better to tell the truth than to lie." Ebonyheart said as if it were obvious, as though it correctly backed up her shade thrown towards the more aggressive of their fellow Stoneclanners.
"If you say so, dear daughter." Rabbitfur flicked an ear as her darker green gaze filtered back to neutral before she turned her head to spot the tom in waiting. "Ah, Birdtalon. You've got quite a day ahead of you, Ebonyheart seems to be in high spirits." Her whiskers twitched with mild amusement before she continued, "I'll make sure both of you have some warm prey upon your return."
With a flicker of her long tail, the senior warrioress made her way through the snow covered ground towards the warrior's den to gather a few extra paws for hunting, leaving her daughter and Birdtalon near the entrance alone.
"Time to freeze our paws off." Ebonyheart flicked a tuffed ear before standing and making her way out into the barren, snow covered lands of Stoneclan.

Birdtalon and a few other clanmates hunkered down over a rabbit picked clean. He ferociously licked his forelegs and rubbed at his face. Without markings to break up his fur color, it was always conspicuous whenever Birdtalon wasn't clean. His snout and chin would turn maroon if he wasn't meticulous. Mid-lick, he heard his name, and the stone-gray tom turned to see Ebonyheart and her mother. Huh? They looked like they were heading out, or at least Ebonyheart did anyway, for her paws were on the well-worn path that led out of camp. Wait, what? Me?He gently nudged one of his friends in a gesture of "I've gotta go" and quickly skittered after the two she-cats. He arrived just in time to hear a chastising note from Rabbitfur. Instinctively, Birdtalon's ears pinned back and he tried to appear non-threatening as he approached the medicine cat apprentice. Oh, yes, he was totally ready. Not caught off-guard in the slightest. He'd been plucked for duty like a leaf from a tree! Wait a minute, Rabbitfur called him exceptional? He thought highly of the she-cat. He would've thought she'd become deputy after Smokestar received her nine lives, but Valiantstride was chosen instead. "Sorry to hold you up," he remarked, and he meant that, despite having absolutely no clue what was happening. He looked between the two formidable she-cats. Rabbitfur gave him an appraising look and, to his surprise, offered dinner. Birdtalon's paws warmed. Why did he feel like he was going to be scolded? "Oh, I, uh..." He'd just eaten, but who knew how long Ebonyheart would keep him out there and he didn't want to be impolite... "I'd appreciate that. Thank you, ma'am." He ducked his head respectfully. He waited until Rabbitfur left before looking over at the clan's medicine cat in training (although with her fluffy fur, she hardly looked the part of an "apprentice"). "Where do medicine cats go to gather herbs in leafbare?" he asked. "I'm afraid I know nothing of how you and Sandblaze do what you do." Maybe it was a secret, and Birdtalon would never know. Ebonyheart, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams She honestly hadn't planned for the older gray tom to accompany her out onto the snow covered scrub lands of Stoneclan's rather barren territory. The young healer had more or less pulled his name from the depth of her head when put on the spot by her senior mother.
She was surprised that upon hearing his name called from across camp that he came quickly and with no hesitation to aid the large black feline. Even without warning or preparation he was willing to help. The depth of his loyalty and dedication was well noted and respected.
Rabbitfur had once told her that he'd make a good deputy, perhaps her bi-colored mother was not incorrect in her assessment of the warrior.
Flickering the nub of a tail she had, Ebonyheart turned those pale green pools towards Birdtalon, the mossy hues as unreadable as ever as her dark maw parted. "Unsurprisingly, most warriors don't know." Though her tone was sharp as always there was a sliver of sarcasm that worked it's way through as her whiskers wriggled ever so slightly.
He didn't train in the unique and selective training of Medicine Cats.
"Unfortunately, today wont be very eventful." Ebonyheart lifted herself to her wide paws before padding from the comfort of Stoneclan's white camp and out onto the rocky territory beyond. Prints followed behind her in the snow, memories of her presence until the falling flurries once again covered it.
"You should try again in Greenleaf, if you find gathering herbs fun anyways." This time her pale pools flickered with mild amusement, though it quickly disappeared as soon as it had shown itself. Ebonyheart herself, rather enjoyed the searching and gathering of herbs. It helped her keep count and notice of what possible stores were low.
"Otherwise, we'll spend most of the day wandering through the territory to see if anything has survived the frost." Mossy hues glanced over the fluffy shoulder of the younger Stoneclanner, watching Birdtalon for a moment before returning her gaze to lead her paws as she padded on towards the first border, Rainclan.

"I think I've passed the age requirement to be your apprentice," Birdtalon chuckled, "so I appreciate you humoring me." He hadn't learned a single thing of first aid from his mentor; regretably, the most help he could be in a situation was to get help. The gray tom inwardly grimaced, remembering proud Crimsonshadow's foolish demise, how he'd watched the tom's grisly convulsions and paralysis from the venomous snakebite. There wasn't anything he could've done. He'd tried to support him back to camp but the warrior's body wouldn't cooperate and he eventually died. The rattlesnake was a predator Birdtalon never wanted to ever fight. "Unfortunately, today won't be very eventful," Ebonyheart said to him. Birdtalon shrugged his tail side to side. "That seems about par for the patrol. At least it will be beautiful with all the frost. The sight makes up for the chill." Birdtalon wished, not for the first time, that he had longer fur on his feet like Ebonyheart did. When she mentioned Greenleaf, he nearly sighed in longing. He performed his usual daily patrols already today, but another couldn't hurt. "I have a habit of wandering around the territory. If you teach me what to look for, come Greenleaf I'll keep my eyes out and mark it for you." Birdtalon's nose smelled RainClan on the easterly wind. His ears perked, and his eyes swept across his surroundings, remaining alert for any other cats just in case. ( this table coding is copyright of my friend hata )

Ebonyheart, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The large black feline made her way through the snow covered territory at a relatively steady pace. She made certain to watch her foot steps in certain areas where ice or loose stones could cause problems as well as cautiously sniffing areas where snakes were known to lay in wait.
Though it was rare if almost never to see a scaled fiend during leaf bare, the young healer wouldn't put it past such creatures to strike despite the cold and snow if they felt threatened or decided they were hungry.
The green eyed beauty remembered the expression etched upon Birdtalon's face when Crimsonshadow's petrified, dead form was dragged into the den she shared with Sandblaze. There was nothing either Medicine Cat could have done at that point, though Ebonyheart had a feeling there was little they couldn't have done even if one of them had been apart of that unfortunate patrol.
Adders and their cruel fangs were a different kind a danger.
Pale green hues glanced around at near cracks within boulders and occasionally shifted snow in mild hopes that something green and herb-scented would catch her attention. Certain plants grew all year long, despite the harsh cold and frost of certain season but she couldn't get greedy either, otherwise there would be none left to continue growth.
Unfortunately though, Ebonyheart wasn't finding anything productive so far.
"Luckily, our stores are fairly stocked with anything we might need for the remainder of Leafbare." Everything should starts to grow back healthy and full by the middle of Newleaf should Starclan provide. Stoneclan had been lucky to avoid a large and deadly Greencough outbreak this year.
"When there is snow on the ground it's best to just keep your nose down and try to scent anything beneath it." The large black feline lifted her head to shake the small amount of cold, white powder off her nose, the need to sneeze faintly rising before it slipped away. "Though, if you want to know what to look for, I wouldn't mind showing you during Greenleaf."
Ebonyheart found she didn't mind Birdtalon's company.

Birdtalon's paws quickly became cold traversing the frost-dusted dirt. Their territory was hard and unrelenting as stone. Sometimes while wandering, he would daydream of expeditions away from home to seek out new lands and prey. StoneClan wouldn't have to worry about the pesky four neighbors, and the whole clan would live in a beautiful new place that wasn't so harsh on the body. This Leafbare was his third; they never seemed to get easier. Like Ebonyheart, Birdtalon couldn't see much except shrubs and patches of grass poking out of the thin snow. The gray tom smiled warmly at Ebonyheart's news that the herb stores were well-stocked. "I give praise to StarClan that StoneClan has aid of two medicine cats. We can hold out for two more moons until the flowers bloom again." His pawpad had healed over well thanks to Ebonyheart's stockpile, but he couldn't tell you what a single one of those herbs looked like un-shriveled. Putting his nose down as she recommended, Birdtalon snorted at the icy crust. His body bowed slightly, front legs splayed while his hindquarters were raised, tail up. "Hm..." Nope, he couldn't smell anything. "I... feel I must be honest in my intentions, miss." Birdtalon straightened and looked over at Ebonyheart. "I'm worried about Sandblaze. Something is changing about him. You might need the help of the clan to assist in finding herbs in the future." Usually he just did his wellness checks on the elder's den to make sure Quartzpelt and Nightpetal weren't uncomfortable, but he was noticing some of their behavior in Sandblaze lately too. Birdtalon wasn't presumptuous enough to suggest his own medicine cat retire; he just wanted to confide his worries. tags Ghost the Undead Goddessnotes i have two wildly varying iterations of winter. my home state gets real cold, snow, etc, but my current state is mainly rain in winter so there's like a "cool-season" grow period where herbs could theoretically still be growing. i'm not sure about Fate's kind of leafbares though so I just default to WINTER = NO GROW ( this table coding is copyright of my friend hata )

Ebonyheart, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams His voice echoed her thoughts, the concerns she had for her mentor as time continued to move on around them.
Sandblaze wasn't an old cat, in fact he was hardly much older than the fluffy black she-cat was. It had only been a year since the young healer's training had started. It had only been a little over twelve moons since Dawnblossom had been taken from Stoneclan by a bunch of hungry, mangy foxes.
However, something had been off with the red tomcat who held the position of senior healer. Over the end of Leaf-Fall he had taken a tumble into a chilly stream while gathering herbs, and since then a certain number of things kept occuring that would draw the large feline's attention to him.
Though, Sandblaze vehemently denied anything was wrong within. Ebonyheart knew better. Though she was young and still inexperienced at the world around her, she seemed to have a gift when it came to the arts of healing and medical knowledge. She aided Dawnchaser in gaining his eyesight back and now he even held his warrior name among the clan. She knew something was wrong with Sandblaze, even if he refused to admit it.
Perhaps he was scared of the diagnoses or perhaps what such a thing could mean to him. Over the course of the last few moons Ebonyheart had noticed a deterioration within his hearing, he wouldnt even notice when cats arrived in their shared dens on occasions. What would happen if he were out on the territory on his own and something snuck up on him?
Ebonyheart didn't really want to think about that. Her bond with her mentor was different than those who were training to be warriors. She slept int he same den as Sandblaze, they are and worked together in their little nook within Stoneclan's camp. More seculded from the others of their clan despite their being no real distance. Sandblaze was an important cat in her life, similar to that of her mother, Rabbitfur.
It was obvious now that other cats were begining to notice the change within Sandblaze, causing Ebonyheart to give a faint sigh in response to Birdtalon. "I've been keeping an eye on him, but he doesn't want to admit that something seems to be wrong." Most medicine cats tended to be extremely stubborn and usually overlooked their own health.
It was a situation she needed to draw Smokestar's attention to, an intervention for the older healer.
"You're a good cat to worry about him, an even better one to have even picked up the problem he keeps trying to hide." Ebonyheart conintued, her tone just as sharp and proper as ever as those pale, green pools scanned the area just past the Rainclan border, curious as to how their stores faired for the harshness of Leafbare.

He was expecting a sarcastic quip, or maybe something to gloss over Sandblaze's condition, telling him not to worry. Instead, he received a soft sigh, and Birdtalon dreaded the worst: that Ebonyheart was going to tell him Sandblaze's condition was terminal in some way and nobody had meant to know. He wasn't relieved, per se, but he also wasn't surprised to hear that it was pride at fault. StoneClan males tended to suffer from it in some way, he noticed. "I pray to StarClan a cure can be found then. He is not yet an elder," he replied. His paws warmed at her compliments--Ebonyheart, like her mother, did not dole them out lightly--and his tail curled in pleasure. "I try to talk to everyone or at least see them, you know, do a head-check. Especially in Leafbare. He's good once you've got his attention, but there's been a few times I've called out to him from behind and he's passed me by. It's not like him to outright ignore a clanmate." Birdtalon hadn't thought much of it at first, just that he was busy or sequestered in his own thoughts. Once or twice his feelings had been hurt thinking he'd done something wrong or offended Sandblaze enough to warrant ignoring. It'd been after he'd tried to get Quartzpelt's attention repeatedly that he was suddenly reminded of Sandblaze's behavior. Birdtalon's head suddenly swiveled in the direction of the hills at StoneClan's southernmost border. He smelled a strange sulfurous smell, and he saw a single curling column of steam rising from the hillside. "Fire? In this season? Impossible," he said. Looking at Ebonyheart in disbelief, he asked, "I'm not imagining things, right? You see that smoke?" ( this table coding is copyright of my friend hata )

Ebonyheart, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The large she-cat continued to pad along side the older tom as they made their way through the snow covered lands of Stoneclan's rather barren but white territory. It seemed the chill still had yet to breech her thick coat, even her paws had yet to feel the numbing bite that often came with trodding through the cold powder on the ground.
Pale, mossy pools shifted from watching where she walked to glance over to the pale gray warrior next to her as she examinined him silently.
The black healer could see why her mother rather liked Birdtalon. He had a good head on his shoulders, and unlike his older siblings that she had grown used to dealing with, he had a more gentle temperament that didn't rise with anger or irritation. Had he possibly been older, Ebonyheart was sure that he could one day assend to a higher postion than just a normal warrior.
He reminded her both a little of Valliantstride, the current deputy, and of her mother, Rabbitfur. He was dutiful and took his duties personally and didn't stop until they were absolutely complete. It'd be wise of Smokestar to give him an apprentice one the kits that were in the nursery came of six moons in age.
The care he showed for his fellow clanmates was just another reason that Ebonyheart herself rather liked about the gray tomcat. It was her duty, after all, to care for them and heal them whenever they were in need of her unique skills. "I appreciate your concerns, and i'm sure Sandblaze does as well." Her tone was curt but she was finishing the conversation about her mentor.
While she was suspicious of the problem, there was no need for her to worry a warrior about such issues, if she could help it anyways. If she was in absolute need, her first priority would be to inform either Smokestar or Valiantstride as they were the figureheads of Stoneclan.
Though, that was taking nothing away from Birdtalon and his abilites.
Those wide, flat paws of Ebonyheart, unique to those that lived within her clan alone, continued to lead the healer as she padded routinely towards the border of Rainclan. She had long learned to routes to travel to find the correct herbs despite what season it might be, though only Leafbare proved to be the most difficult when it came to such a task.
Upon Birdtalon's remark, she quickly shifted her gaze from his dilute form to where there was indeed, a shaft of smoke rising from near the mountainous border of Stoneclan's wide territory. Of course, the first instincts of any cat would be the immedieate thought of fire, but it was far too cold and frozen for such a raging force to be tearing through the valley during this time.
"Doubtful... Though I have no idea what else it would be." There was a slight tilt of the younger feline's head, similar to the fashion she had done often as a young kit and curious apprentice. Though even grown and continously aging, the true curiousity of the black coated healer didn't completely leave her and without much thought to her movements, Ebonyheart quickly turned her steps towards where the smoke billowed gently above the ground.

Ever since the death of his sister, Redpaw, at the hands of one of StoneClan's most dangerous predators, the gray tom had taken it upon himself to make up where he'd lacked as an apprentice by trying to protect his Clan. Even though he may not have been deputy or leader, he still felt a moral obligation to its safety, for the Clan was only as strong as its weakest warriors. Ultimately, however, he deferred to the Clan's leadership, as any loyal warrior would. When Ebonyheart told him she appreciated his concerns, he simply gave a firm nod, completely trusting her to do what she wanted in regards to his observations. He wasn't like his father, browbeating anyone who did not give him the proper regards or attention. His thoughts were captured by the tiny tongue of smoke rippling on the mountainside. A sense of uncertainty rippled down Birdtalon's vertebrae. The tom's hindquarters twitched, fur spiking slightly, and the tip of his tail whipped quickly at the uneasiness he felt at the thought of fire in the territory. He did not fear it in the same way, say, a TreeClan cat would, but the smoke would be a hazard for many cats. It seemed that Ebonyheart knew him well enough that he did not have to voice his desire to check it out. She quickly turned in the direction of the mountain, and together the two deviated from their course toward the RainClan border. Kicking up his heels, Birdtalon padded after the fluffy she-cat he accompanied. His green eyes swept across the landscape to check for dangers to his medicine cat. He didn't speak until they reached the gradual incline indicating they were on the hill. "I'll go ahead," he told her as he smelled the strange odor ahead, like a dropped vulture's egg exposed to the air for too long. Birdtalon lowered his head and quickly ran forward. His long claws, for which he was named, glinted in contrast to his matte-gray pelt. They unsheathed completely with each climbing leap. Birdtalon hauled himself up several shelves of rocks until he reached the top. He peered over the jagged surface and his eyes widened at the sight of fallen rocks, all covered in snow. A great stone-fall must have happened here, for a void was present in the side of the rocky mountain. Warm wind blew into Birdtalon's face despite the Leafbare season, and he looked back down the way he'd come, down at Ebonyheart. "It's... warmer up here," he called in confusion. He looked around, but didn't see any hawks circling overhead. "I think it's safe but let's be careful." Birdtalon looked back at the scene. He realized that a small pool of water was the source of the thin plume of steam rising in the winter air. It flowed from the mountain, out of the spot where the rocks had fallen. He recognized the way rubble fell, probably on its own or under the weight of the snow. He didn't have the words to know that it was a geothermal spring he was seeing, draining in the direction of RainClan's many waterways. It would trickle down the hill and through the earth to rejoin the big river that flowed into the valley. The gray tom felt it was safe enough to climb up the rest of the way. However, he did not venture toward the hot springs, but waited for Ebonyheart to join him and make sure she didn't need help jumping. ( this table coding is copyright of my friend hata )

Ebonyheart, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The scent was not the most pleasant, a near foul odor that hung within the chilly air like something that had soured and dissipated along the wind. It caused a slight curl to the muzzle of the healer, her palette not entirely pleased with having to endure the stench, though her more natural curiosity won out when it came to whatever it was that caused such a whiff.
Flickering her fluffy nub, the black molly moved to follow her more dilute and shorter coated companion as the gray tomcat maneuvered himself through the pale snow that covered the ground. With each of his quick movements a flurry of white powder was thrown up into the air, though the younger feline simply padded at a composed pace that left paw-steps behind her as the falling snow slowly moved to recover her tracks.
Wide, flat paws that were practically made to traverse the Stoneclan terrain aided with each inclined step, though eventually curled claws had to slip out from their inky placement to aid her in reaching where Birdtalon so respectfully awaited her arrival.
The ebony coated feline was not entirely prepared for the warmth that greeted her face as she pulled herself beside the older warrior, her curiosity spinning within her head as the fluffy she-cat stared down at where the sudden delight in the middle of Leafbare was possibly coming from. It was an odd, uncommon feature that caused a mild bewildered expression to pass through those pale and normally unreadable green pools as she watched the steam curl up in the direction of the frigid sky.
Shifting upon her paws, Ebonyheart moved to slowly descend down towards where the water bubbled through the rocks of the mountainside, slowly flowing towards where she assumed it was meeting up with the more colder waters of Rainclan's river tributaries throughout their lowland territory.
The slight sound of rubble shifting and a pebble tumbling down with a splash caused a faint pause within the younger healer's movements. A tuffed ear flickered as pale green pools slowly examined the previous rock slide before her gaze to see if anything were unstable or dangerous to her and her companion. It seemed, however, that it seemed stable aside from the small debris that the steamy waterway pulled within it's steady flow.
Ebonyheart reached out and let one front limb dangle over the water before softly touching it with her toes, watching as ripples circled from the point of origin. A tiny sliver of warmth radiated through her paw for a moment before the cool air around them quickly chilled the feeling. "It's warm?" Though she meant it as more of a statement, it came out with the inflection of a question as the young she-cat turned her attention towards Birdtalon.
"Have you ever seen anything like this?" She asked, unable to keep the youthful curiosity from her voice as such a discovery.

Birdtalon looked over his shoulder and grinned at Ebonyheart's approach. He faltered, slightly stunned at the uncommon expression upon her visage; he blinked thrice and his tail twitched in a flustered show upon seeing the sudden delight in her eyes. She was always so formal, so restrained, that the sight of her curiosity caused his chest to tighten painfully, and he was grateful that she did not linger by his side but rather explored down toward where the water gurgled through the rocks. "Where is it coming from?" he asked in wonder. He wasn't wholly ignorant of the water cycle, but he had no idea water could come from places other than the sky. StoneClan was mostly dry and rocky, and the clan cats usually got their water content from their prey or pools of water collected after rainfall. Tentatively, Birdtalon strode upstream, watching silt sift through the steamy liquid and flow right past him. The mountain seemed to let out a great sigh as a pillar of steam gushed freely from the vent and rubble shifted, the steam rising and immediately blending in with the overcast sky. At Ebonyheart's question, he turned and shook his head. "No, never. We should probably inform Smokestar about this. Maybe since this water is here, different kinds of herbs will start popping up. Do you see anything to take back with us? I can help carry anything you need." Birdtalon wasn't expecting anything, given the season, but this water was so warm that he wouldn't put it past StarClan to send them a sign that life was present. They would remember this place and come back in the growing season. ( this table coding is copyright of my friend hata )
