It was still sheer chaos in camp. Ravenstorm was dead, accidentally poisoned by her own brother after a malicious plot set into place by his father to kill Gorsetail backfired. A she-cat dead, a traitor exiled, and now he was left to check and console the youngster at the center of it all.
Amberwing was fussing over him about as much as his mother was, which Falconstorm found strange even if she was his mentor. It was well known that the she-cat tended to avoid those younger than she was by more than a certain number of moons. She also didn't like kits, though she tolerated them in public. Little things he'd noticed, so that she was sitting there licking the space between Hemlockpaw's ears was really odd.
"Hemlockpaw, I want you to come with me. Even though you didn't eat the tainted prey I want to keep you overnight to make sure it didn't spread to you anyway." Depending on what had been in the tainted prey even just carrying it in his mouth could have given him a slight dose of the poison. He'd have to check the prey later, or at least ask what it smelled like, other than wrong. He also could tell the young apprentice was in shock, probably needing some time away from his overbearing family and the attention of the entire clan to just process and chill out. He looked to Mockingbird and gave her a dead stare. "Just him. And unless you are sick or injured no one else is to come into my den while he's there. Poor thing's been through enough without the clan hounding after him with questions and pestering."
That said he swept his tail against the younger tom and nudged him forward away from the group, herding him towards the medicine den. He'd already tended Ravenstorm's body, done right by her, and now he could only focus on the living, the ones left behind. He walked, keeping his voice low. "It wasn't your fault." Had anyone bothered to tell him that, he wondered?
