NIKO
you're always gonna fly away
just because you know you can
Leafbare 21: The sky grows darker and the snow falls heavier through the night and next morning.
Leafbare was hard. It was cold, and lonely, and food was scarce. He couldn't remember the last time he'd eaten, couldn't remember the last time he wasn't shivering. It was his second leafbare alone, but it wasn't any easier than the first. His fur had grown in a little thicker this year, but it wasn't enough to keep the chill from reaching deep into his bones.
Pale grey-blue eyes glanced wearily upward, watching as the sky ontinued to darken. It would be a rough night, and he needed to prepare for the possibility that he would be trapped in a den for a few days after the snow fell. But prey was scarce, and he had traveled farther from his makeshift den than he would have liked.
Prowling through the deep snow was no easy feat for the small tom, and he found himself sinking up to his chest more often than he would like. With his legs and underbelly wet, moving became increasingly difficult as his shivering worsened. He had to find food soon, before his condition worsened to the point where hunting would be impossible.
Niko's ears pricked forward hopefully and his pawsteps froze. He could hear a faint scuffling and narrowed his eyes as he searched for the source. A few tail-lengths away, a rabbit was digging in the snow, looking for food of its own. Niko lowered himself closer to the ground, gathering his weary paws beneath him into the best hunter's crouch he could muster. He paused, waited, gathering energy into his muscles. The rabbit turned away from him, obliviously munching on a few blades of grass it managed to dig up. It wasn't the plumpest of rabbits, but Niko knew the little meat it did offer would be enough to get him through the next few days...if he could manage to catch it.
He pounced, leaping high to clear the deep snow between them. Unfortunately, the rabbit heard his takeoff and bolted. With a frustrated, feral growl, Niko narrowed his eyes and chased after the rabbit, too desperate to let his one chance at a meal escape him.
