Camp was abuzz with action even though heat sat oppressively on top of everything. Queens lounged outside their den, chattering about nothing and everything, while kits ran between them and over them. Apprentices and warriors entered and exited the camp, either on hunting trips or border patrol. Although the second battle had resulted in Hawkstar losing a life, Stoneclan was moving and growing. Two new apprentices were even named! Sorrelpaw, still woozy in her waking hours, had missed the ceremony itself, but had been given permission to congratulate them with assistance with walking.
Now, she was outside the medicine cat's den, under a nice canopy built for cats just like her, those waiting, not healed enough to be out of the watchful eyes of the medicine cats. Her injured leg stuck out as Sorrelpaw shifted to flop on her side. It wasn't graceful, or becoming of an older apprentice, but it was comfortable and made her feel better. With a huff she worked the ground with her front paws, lazily in the heat. Everyone had something to do, but she was stuck waiting to heal. Shame sat deep in her belly as she recounted the events of the battle. She had analyzed each bit, and as she did, more and more of the panic ebbed away and the details shown clear. It was a foolish mistake.

So much had happened over the past pawful of days, Honeynose still felt like her head was spinning. StoneClan had reclaimed the Sun Stones, but at the cost of one of Hawkstar's lives. Honeynose had gone out of her way to reassure both Herondive and Vipertail that Hawkstar was going to be just fine. She didn't know that for certain, but she believed it, and that was enough.
Confident that her best friend now had something more positive to focus on (her very own apprentice!), Honeynose had slowly let her attention drift back to everything else. Er, everything and Vipertail. Utterly smitten with the handsome green-eyed warrior, she had tried to spend any spare moment she had with him, much to the teasing and eyerolling of her siblings, Cricketspring and Valerianleap. Honeynose stretched in the heavy afternoon heat, shaking out her pelt as if she could get rid of some of the warmth. Thinking of Cricketspring brought her right back to the battle; she thanked the stars above that her sister had returned unscathed - though Cricketspring was one of the lucky ones.
Sorrelpaw hadn't been so lucky.
Deciding to drop in on the injured apprentice, Honeynose skipped around the fresh kill pile, careful not to run headfirst into any elders or warriors getting a midday meal. Sorrelpaw was lying just outside of Dawnblossom's den in an undignified heap, but Honeynose was hardly one to judge. With a welcoming mew, the young warrioress waved her tail to Sorrelpaw. "Hey there! You look bored or hot or both. Anything I can do to help?" Honeynose was happy to offer conversation to a young cat, especially one who was used to hunting and patrolling and generally being of help to the Clan.

A kind voice broke into her thoughts, causing Sorrelpaw to tilt her head up to find the source. A warrior had padded her way, for an actual conversation! Everyone had seemed too busy to be bothered with her, and the sight of the gentle she-cat lifted Sorrelpaw's heart. She flicked her tail in greeting at Honeynose, beginning the work to sit in an more appropriate position for conversation. The soil under the tree was still cool despite the heat, and provided a good grip for her claws. Absentmindedly, she noticed they had been cleaned at some point, but not by her. Probably to keep me from looking so ratty, Sorrelpaw thought, shifting so her leg was comfortable again. "I would love that," She replied between breaths, the effort it took to sit up straighter winding her. It was frustrating to get tired so easily now. Hiding her embarrassment of taking so long to move, Sorrelpaw licked at her chest fur. "How's, uhm, the clan doing?" She asked, unsure how to start the conversation. A small laugh bubbled up. "I think I missed a couple days here and there."

Sorrelpaw's movements were stiff and uncomfortable-looking. Honeynose's gaze softened. She's pretty young, it wasn't so long ago that I was her age. She should heal quickly! Honeynose had faith that Dawnblossom and Sandpaw had done well to patch up poor Sorrelpaw. When the apprentice asked a question, however, obviously trying to open up a conversation, Honeynose's bubbly personality took over.
"The Clan's doing well! Hawkstar's still recovering, but he looks strong. Kestrelkit and Meadowkit became apprentices!" Honeynose's voice raised with pride, feeling a vicarious happiness for her best friend, Herondive, who had become Meadowpaw's mentor. "So you'll have some company when you go back to your nest." She could so easily picture the expression on Kestrelpaw's face when Eagletalon's son had been given Mistpetal to be his mentor.
It was an honor to be trained by the deputy. Her other best friend, Hazelcloud, had been trained by Hawkstar himself - so she would know better than anyone what kind of responsibility came with such a distinction. Honeynose stretched out contentedly, grateful for her short coat in such hot weather. What else is exciting news...
"Oh!" Honeynose's warm gaze sparkled, and she leaned her muzzle in to whisper. "I overheard Skunkspots and Valiantstride talking a few nights ago. Skunkspots is having his kits! I don't think the whole Clan knows yet, so don't tell anyone I told you, okay? Let's wait until she starts sharing the happy news, then we can congratulate her." The tabby and white warrior purred, feeling a pang of envy. Skunkspots was older than she was, and most remembered for her awkward interactions and her sharp tongue; yet she had been able to settle down with a great tom and start her own family...
Honeynose thought of Vipertail, and her heart glowed. Maybe in the spring. Maybe.

Sorrelpaw felt the wave of conversation slide over her like a familiar blanket, the tightness in her chest since waking up injured loosening. The apprentice always appreciated conversation, and learning of her clan's comings and goings. She knew of the new apprentices, but a new uncertainty bloomed at realizing she'll be training with them. Learning the same basic steps again. Training back at step one. "It'll be nice to relearn with someone fresh to the techniques," She did not let the disappointment of starting fresh color her words, but shame still pricked at the back of her brain. She had been so close!
The breath in the conversation, especially after hearing of the other apprentices made her mind start to spiral. It hurt to be set back so far. The apprentice dreamed of what her warrior name would be, and now it would be several moons before that would come to light. Then Honeynose leaned in, and Sorrelpaw pricked her ears in confusion. What she heard next was a delightful secret. "Kits!" She whispered excitedly, glancing around for anyone nearby. This was the best news she's heard all day! New kits meant more warriors, and that lead to a stronger clan. A nothing was better than a stronger clan, with lots of clanmates to love and support. Sorrelpaw grinned at the thought of how cute the kits would look, then noticed a look in her companion's eye. She smiled slyly, knowing a secret was to be found. "Do you want kits, Honeynose?" She asked, keeping her words neutral to let the warrior answer as honestly as she liked. No sense scaring her off so early into their conversation! Her leg didn't even ache right now. It was the perfect time to learn about this gentle she-cat who took time from her day to chat.

Oh, oops. Maybe telling her about two new apprentices was the wrong thing to say. If she'd been in Sorrelpaw's position, the feeling that she was 'falling behind' would have eventually settled in, especially as her peers graduated to warriorhood and new kits were brought in as 'paws. Honeynose herself had had her apprenticeship delayed a full moon due to a bout with greencough. Her siblings, in a show of solidarity, had decided to wait until they were 7 moons to become apprentices along with her.
She had been so lucky to be born with such loyal littermates.
Honeynose neatly curled her tail around her paws, the tabby markings standing out against the white fur on her toes.
Sorrelpaw's all-too-appropriately-timed question had the she-cat's pelt heating up. She couldn't fight a smile, hoping her wistful sighs and frequent glances to Vipertail hadn't been that obvious. "Oh, yes. I think I'd really like being a queen. I enjoy hunting, particularly tracking, but motherhood seems so..." What was the word she was looking for?
"Rewarding," she mewed after a while, with a mental nod at her word choice. "It looks like hard work, but that seems part of the fun." Honeynose's eyes sparkled in the sun, her voice a warm chirp. "All the excitement of a battle and none of the scariness." Raising a litter of kits to apprenticeship and warriorhood - and even deputyship or leadership was an adventure all its own. Honeynose was eager to take part in that aspect of Clan life.

Watching Honeynose glow with her answer was exactly what Sorrelpaw wanted to see. She smiled, feeling her own chest swell with happiness in response. The apprentice never wanted kits, or a family really. The urge to be great for her clan didn't lead her down the path of kits. She knew that would become her duty eventually, to further not only her full Stoneclan lineage, but to give her clan more warriors to stay strong. For now, she was quite content to provide for her clan with her own self, rather than providing more bodies. Still, listening to Honeynose's answer was a delight, knowing the she-cat in front of her was prepared to have a family and welcomed it with open paws.
"All the excitement of a battle and none of the scariness." Sorrelpaw started to laugh at that, a high and carefree sound, then winced, her motion proving too dramatic for her leg. She shifted again, muttering an apology as she did. It's going to be difficult to get used to this pain. "I think," She started, once everything was settled again, covering her embarrassment with a few licks to her chest fur. "I think you'll win that battle Honeynose, you have a kind soul. Your kits will carry that in them. I can't imagine a better mother for new ones." Her voice was full of respect for the older cat. She had shown nothing but kindness already, even with her sister being Sorrelpaw's fighting companion. Seeing Honeynose around camp had proved that too. Any kits would surely caring the kindness that Honeynose left in her pawsteps, Sorrelpaw felt the certainty of that thought settled over the pair like a familiar idea, like the knowledge that the stars would appear every night to watch over the clans. 295 | Fawn | sorrel's gone a bit starry-eyed hah!

Not even the world's most indifferent Clan cat could fail to appreciate that sort of compliment. Honeynose's eyes widened, and then a purr burst from her throat, basking in the praise. To say she had a kind soul was very sweet, and what Honeynose hoped was accurate. To know how Sorrelpaw viewed her was all the encouragement the tabby warrior needed to be... better. A better Clanmate. A better sister. A better friend.
"Maybe in the future, you can mentor one of my kits." Honeynose smiled fully, expression brimming with pleasure at the thought. Oh, to see her own kits become apprentices... She wondered what that felt like, and felt a giddy rush through her system at the imagery in her head. "I know they'll be in safe paws with you."
Honeynose was pulled from her daydreams by the approaching shape of Dawnblossom, StoneClan's medicine cat. Honeynose stood up, nodding politely and sensing that her time with Sorrelpaw may be at an end -for now. She would most certainly have to visit again. Someone sweet and kind like Sorrelpaw deserved company.
Dawnblossom set the wet moss before her patient. "Drink a little, and then try to get some sleep. It's the quickest way to get out of this heat."
"Hello Dawnblossom. I'll get out of your way," Honeynose mewed gently, then threw a smile at Sorrelpaw. "Is it okay if I come back later? Tonight or tomorrow morning?"
Dawnblossom's expression was warm with approval. "Of course. For now, Sorrelpaw needs rest."
Honeynose nodded, taking her leave. "Bye Sorrelpaw, I'll visit soon. I promise."
