Aurora returned to camp dragging a wind blown rabbit with her. She dropped it once she reached the relatively flat ground of the oasis and worked her jaw a bit. She had caught it just outside the LightningClan border and had dragged it all the way up the mountains with her. It hadn't been easy, that was for sure, and her jaw was stiff from the strain of it.
Glancing around, she spotted Maverick and picked the rabbit up once more, dragging it the short distance over to him, "I thought we could share!" Her eyes sparkled with happiness at finally being able to share prey with her brother again.
Purring, he lay beside Aurora and dug in happily. He hadn't left the oasis much; he wanted to be here in case new cats came to join MountainClan so he could explain exactly what that meant to them. He didn't want cats to feel obligated to join his makeshift Clan, and he wanted to let them know that althought he watched over the Clan, he was not their leader and did not expect them to obey him in all things like the Clans in the valley. He only asked one thing of them, that they not speak of MountainClan to the other Clans. Other than that, they were free to do as they pleased as long as they didn't hurt any other cat in the process. They could leave for as long as they liked and come back again whenever they felt the urge for company. They did not need to hunt or fight for the Clan, only themselves, but extra prey for those who had a hard time fending for themselves was always welcome. Everything was going perfectly.
"You were gone for some time... has hunting really gotten that bad?" he asked between mouthfuls. As of lately, he'd pretty much been relying on Aurora to hunt for him. He felt bad about it, but she said it was fine since it was her duty to hunt for the Tribe back when she was a prey-hunter. He felt a spark of disdain at the mention of their old life. She had become a prey-hunter, as he had wanted to be, but instead he had been trained as a cave-guard. In secret, he had always practiced hunting techniques that his sister showed him and took all the knowledge he could from being trained as a cave-guard as well. He knew that the skills he learned from both would come in handy when he finally left the Tribe, but he had never been as good of a hunter as his sister, who had been able to devote her full attention to learning the best ways to hunt.
She shook her head as she tore a piece of meat from the rabbit, "No, it is not that bad...." She glanced around to make sure no other cat was listening, "I wished to meet Dawnpelt, and so I did."
He stopped eating at that, his ears pricked and alert, "Did she say anything? Is she alright?" He stared at her, his molten gold gaze instense.
Aurora thought his question over for a moment, "She is well, on the outside, yes...." She paused before turning an equally intense gaze back at him, "She needs to see you, Maverick. You must go to her, soon!"
"You know I would love to... but I-"
"No! You MUST go! Or else she will come here! Would you really put her and your kits in danger for this?" she hissed, sweeping her tail to indicated the few cats of MountainClan that were present at the moment. "I promised her you would go to see her. She needs you! Is she not your mate and do you not love her?" He opened his mouth to reply but she continued before he could utter a sound, "Then she should be more important to you than staying here to greet rogues and loners! Misty, or even me, Maverick! could just as easily acquaint new members to MountainClan as you."
He stared at the remains of the rabbit before him for a short while, contemplating his sister's wise words. Sighing, he looked back to her, "Yes... you're right. I have lost sight of the real reason I started MountainClan.... I wanted to make a safe place for her to run to, if she ever needed it... and I wanted to see if I... if maybe I could... see what she sees in being part of a Clan.... If maybe I... could... come to feel the same as she does and... maybe... join TreeClan...." His gaze had become glazed and had a sort of far away look to them, as if he gazed at something only he could see. Blinknig a few times, he snapped out of it, looking back to Aurora, "I would do anything for her... at least... that is what I tell myself. I just don't know if its really true. Would I really join her Clan if she asked me to, if she needed me to?"
He shook his head, unsure. That was the only thing he wasn't sure he could... he would be willing to do if it came down to it. Sighing once more, he looked out over the valley, toward TreeClan's territory, "I will set out to see her at dawn. I will need my rest if I am to travel across the valley with little to no prey the whole time." The Clans were willing to tolerate his presence on their territories only if he took no prey while he was there, and he did not wish to ruin his relationships with the Clans by taking even the smallest mouse. it had taken him some time to get them all to trust him as they did, and one mouse had the potential to shatter that. He looked around, wondering if Misty was nearby.
