Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁The creamy pelted she-cat was down by the river, attempting to catch a few fish to perhaps sweeten the deal she was about to offer the very same cat that had taught her to fish, Brookfall had stuck by her in her training, even though she could tell he did not appreciate the times she drenched him in water, he had kept quiet about it and remained patient and reliable. He was a good friend and it was for that reason that the Queen had invited the tom down to the river.
She was gonna ask him if he would be willing to mentor Wrenpaw, she had spoken to Stormstar and since the death of Wrenpaw's old mentor to greencough, she had promised her son she would find him the best teacher there was in the clan. If it could not be her, it was logical that she sudgested someone she trusted not only with her former secret about not being able to fish, but with her most precious kitten. She had had attempted to confirm the change in mentorship to her son, but she had been unable to locate him recently.
This concerned her a great deal, that grief filled day where they moarned their family member together was over and since then, Moonshine had made it a habit to check on her son when all was quiet and the rest of the clan was asleep. She would go in a fondly groom her sleeping or sleepy kit until he fell asleep completely with no sign of greencough coming for him.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior While Brookfall had not been overly busy, Moonshine's attempts to contact him beyond a friendly smile or a soft wave of her tail had gone unnoticed. Brookfall's schedule had been under revisement due to the change in weather, and he found himself rising early and returning late, often choosing a comfortable spot in the wooded cove to wait out the hottest points of the day.
However, Brookfall did not want to accrue any sort of suspicion (especially when he had something to hide), so he had made sure Rushwhisker assigned him to a few patrols today. It was on his departure for the dawn patrol that Brookfall had been approached by Moonshine; greeting her warmly, the distinctly-marked tom cat had quickly agreed to meet her by the river, promising to do so as soon as he was released from patrol.
Suspecting she wanted to squeeze in another lesson, Brookfall found himself warily keeping watch for Wrenpaw, just in case the young warrior-to-be was watching them from the shadows of the ferns, ready to let more accusations fly. However, he did not see the apprentice anywhere, and was not so fish-brained as to poke his head into the apprentices' den without very good reason.
With an amiable nod to Silverfrost, Frogpaw and Gorgeleap as he saw them departing for a fishing or hunting expedition, Brookfall forwent breakfast, despite the rumbling stomach. He didn't want to keep Moonshine waiting; it would be rude of him, no matter how hungry, to sit and eat while the she-cat was pacing by the river, expecting him.
It took the work of a moment to locate the pretty queen's scent, and then follow it to its source. Brookfall did not announce his presence with heavy footfalls or even a loud greeting; she seemed to be concentrating on the water, and he wouldn't interrupt her practice.
When Moonshine's eyes raised from the river's surface, however, Brookfall smiled, and greeted the queen with a cordial laugh. "Where would you like me to stand? I want to avoid the next tidal wave, if I can."

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁
Moonshine pulled herself from her thoughts at Brookfall's arrival and joke about a tidal wave which caused her skin under the perfectly groomed pelt to flush with embarrassment, she remembered all the times she had drenched him while attempting to learn to fish. However this was not the reason why she called him here and her tail flicked to the small pile of fish she had managed to catch while she waited for him to arrive.
" As much you love a nice bath Brookfall, my education is not why I called you here" she smiled, jokingly brushing her tail against his chest as a sign of affection. " I wanted to start by saying thank you, for everything," she gestured to the fish with a flick of her tail before continuing her little spiel that she had practised in her head a thousand times before.
" I know what I about to ask you may seem like a lot and I would understand if you wanted to say no" she felt nervous, what if he rejected her proposal to teach her son? There was no one else she trusted to look after her precious kit as much as she did him and Starclan help her if Stormstar was left in charge of her poor offspring's education.
"As you are proably aware, Wrenpaw's mentor was lost to greencough... I have spoken to Stormstar already and we have decided on the best replacement" she paused as if waiting for the male to catch on before she continued speaking
" Since I promised my son I would get him the best mentor in Rainclan and I wanted someone I could trust. The right cat seemed to to be you Brookfall so please will you be my son;s mentor?" she finished, nervous to what the tom's reaction might be. The pair's friendship was all very new and she did not want him to feel obligated to teach Wrenpaw if he did not want to.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior "It was my pleasure, Moonshine," he replied, looking to the small pile of fish she had been able to catch for herself. They had met up a few times more to keep her training regiment going, and Moonshine was now hunting just as well as the rest of them. If Stormstar saw fit, maybe the queen would be given an apprentice? Perhaps even before me.
Brookfall did not know how to feel about that hypothetical circumstance. Would he be jealous, if he was overlooked for mentorship and the honor fell to Moonshine instead? Who had just now, at 30 moons, finally learned how to fish properly? Brookfall wouldn't make attempts to justify Stormstar's decisions, and he wouldn't let the seasoned gray tom's decisions rankle him unnecessarily. If Moonshine becomes a mentor before me, then that's fine.
He could not show pettiness. Or resentment. Nothing negative or detrimental to the blossoming friendship between them. He couldn't allow a few logs to roll into the river and dam up all this progress. A lesser cat might have raised a fuss; Brookfall wouldn't call himself better than anyone, but he at least knew enough to hide his less-than-desirable emotions.
This entire internal conversation proved pointless, however, as Moonshine very seriously asked him to be Wrenpaw's new mentor. Brookfall's yellow eyes widened a few fractions, the mild surprise outlined in black fur surrounding each eye, his distinctive markings always pulling the attention right to his face. "I would be honored," he spoke sincerely. "You've already spoken to Stormstar?"
He had made quite an impression on her.
Brookfall purred, readily accepting this new distinction. "I will try not to let you down. Am I the last to know?" How had the young tom felt, if Moonshine had already told him? StarClan forbid he still harbored any kind of suspicion or dislike towards him; if he did, Brookfall was adament about clearing the air.
He could not have his first apprentice holding on to such a poor impression of him or his intentions. Perhaps they could tell him together? Wrenpaw may grow wary of a conversation just between the two of them, and Brookfall wasn't content just to wait by the river while Moonshine told Wrenpaw the news.
Unless that was precisely what he should do.
Perhaps a united front would be a bad idea? The young tom had just lost his father. He didn't need a substitute parental figure appearing so suddenly out of the blue.
"I'd like to resume his training right away, once I get a sense of where Sandfalcon left off," Brookfall spoke again, thoughtful. "Will you tell him, or shall I?"

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁The beautiful she-cat's face lit up as Brookfall accepted her offer to be Wrenpaw's mentor as with a delighted squeal she moved to wrap herself around him in thanks, a genuine sign of great affection from the female. " Oh thank you Wrenpaw will be so thrilled" She then paused as he asked if her son already knew about this switch in mentor ship and she flushed red under her coat and pulled herself off him.
" Well.. No he doesn't yet, I was thinking that we should tell him together??? She asked, still nervous to push her friendship with the male to far and make him uncomfortable, she was ecstatic he had accepted her offer, Brookfall was a good friend of her's and she trusted him, not only with her secret but now with her son's training.
Wrenpaw was undoubtedly Moonshine's greatest achievement, she was so proud of her strong handsome young kit that it was overwhelming at times, giving him to Sandfalcon was one of the hardest days of her life, especially since Moonshine had hated the old fox heart with a passion. Ashfoot had been more accepting of the grizzly warrior and attempted to console his mate with promises that he would supervise the lessons when he could.
Moonshine teared up slightly thinking of what Ashfoot would have said now, to Brookfall or Wrenpaw or even to herself. A paw moved to wipe the water from her eyes and she refocused her attention back on Brookfall. " I am sorry, it's just that Ashfoot... he always wanted to see Wrenpaw become a warrior" She could not help the lump that formed in her throat as she spoke of the now deceased tom .
" and now, he's gone and I feel so ashamed, I let my family down, if I had just gotten there sooner.. I could have" she wanted to say save him but she couldn't get the words out before the tears flowed like rivers down her face, she did not have to say anything else surely Brookfall had heard the way Ashfoot had died, at the claws of Demon, despite Moonshine dragging him back to camp screaming for Ottersplash.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Brookfall pulled away emotionally, uncomfortable by the onslaught of tears coming from Moonshine. Her grief was still so fresh, her feelings were hardly getting any sort of break, between Wrenpaw and Ashfoot's loss. Brookfall gently laid his tail around Moonshine's flank, wanting to convey in any way she needed to hear it that he was here for emotional support.
"You didn't let your family down," he spoke softly and with the intent to soothe. "If you had gotten there sooner, Wrenpaw may have lost both parents, not just one." It was a terrible truth, but one Brookfall believed nonetheless. Even with Moonshine's desperation to save her mate to contend with, Demon would have triumphed in the end.
There were some things in this world that were much stronger, and much more frightening than a border skirmish between Clans. He had no doubt that Ashfoot had died a warrior's death, though he hadn't been there to see it. Brookfall had arrived in camp to witness the aftermath - a sobbing queen and a shocked son, both cats looking as if they had just lost their entire world.
In an act of self-preservation more than respect, Brookfall had given them their space under the excuse that they needed to privately grieve on their own terms. In truth, Ashfoot's death had shaken him; it was a violent, tragic reminder that cats who went out alone were unsafe.
He had thought of Darkrose, and been worried for her. And then for himself. Darkrose would have rolled her eyes and chided him for his needless concerns, but he wasn't able to help himself. He didn't know what he would do if he had been in Moonshine's place, bringing Darkrose's body back to camp.
Brookfall cleared his throat, trying to regain composure as well as a handle on the situation. "I believe you should tell him, I don't know how he feels about me yet."

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁
"You didn't let your family down,"
"If you had gotten there sooner, Wrenpaw may have lost both parents, not just one."
The words were intended to be soothing but they just served to make Moonshine even more upset, imagining her son having to deal with the loss of both parents, rather than the one fate had so cruelly taken from them." Oh but I did Brookfall, I couldn't save him" she mused as more tears streamed down her cheeks. Ashfoot's last words to his family had been " See you in Starclan", then nothing but the sound of Moonshine yelling no over and over again echoed in her head.
Moonshine believed in Starclan to a degree but Ashfoot's death had shaken her belief to it's very core, after all if they were supposed to protect the clan from harm then why did they let the tawny coloured tom die? why did greencough seem to have Rainclan in a death grip? To many questions and not enough answers were al around and it was both upsettting and frustrating that Stormstar seemed to be determined to not tell the clan any details.
Those who said Demon was the most dangerous thing in the valley clearly had not seen Moonshine when she got truely angry. When Brookfall continued he switched the subject back to her son and how he though she should tell him due to the circumstances and assumptions of their last meeting. She managed a small laugh " Oh Brookfall, if I didn't know better I might have though that you were nervous" She managed to speak before the lump in her throat seemed to fall away and she let out a deep breath
"A mother understands what her offspring do not say."

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Moonshine collected herself after a while, and Brookfall gradually felt the alarm shouts going off in his mind start to lessen, as if the sounds were getting further away now that the danger had passed. Mention of his nervousness, wrapped in a tease and a watery-smile, had him bowing his head as though making a sheepish confession. "A little. It brings me no pleasure to make others uncomfortable." It really didn't.
With a rallying smile, Brookfall was not so disconnected with his feelings that he couldn't admit to being excited. "My first apprentice. Thank you, Moonshine, for trusting me with him." He had made a strong impression on her - and an equally strong impression on Wrenpaw - but fortunately they would reach the end of Wrenpaw's apprenticeship on solid, friendly footing.
He would give Wrenpaw all the attention the young tom needed. To do less would be to do Moonshine a disservice. "Tell him we will start bright and early tomorrow morning," Brookfall finished. "Please excuse me, I think I'll have a word or two with Silverfrost, see what advice he can give before training officially gets underway."
Brookfall looked at the small pile of fish she had skillfully wrested onto the bank. "We can walk back together. That looks like a job for two cats."
It wouldn't be the first time Brookfall had carried fish from one place to another for a pretty she-cat. And it wouldn't be the last - but for now, Brookfall contented himself to think on the present, not the very recent past.
