Cream colored fur hung heavy against the leafbare starved frame of Swanfeather. Her once crisp and shiny blue eyes were cloudy and lacking any sort of energy. The season had been hard on the former medicine cat of RainClan and for the first time in many moons she almost wished for death.

Forcing her pawsteps forward the she-cat attempted to scent the air for anything remotely considered as food. She no longer was picky, she'd eat anything that provided her strength. Perhaps she could stumble upon a mouse that was lame or sickly, she'd risk illness.

As she moved forward her tail twitched as her mouth opened to taste the air around her. She was still in a exile, not allowed to be anywhere near RainClan territory but the hunger drove her back to her former home. Perhaps someone would take pity on her, but that was a short lived idea. Even in her condition her pride was far too big.

The grumble of her stomach painfully reminded her that she needed to eat something or waste away and become her own variation of crowfood. With a pained glance toward the sky she offered a silent prayer to StarClan, despite knowing they would not listen.

Silver paws floated lightly over the frost-strewn ground. It wasn't often he came to the river; it was a source of terror for the water-fearing tom. But one of the elders had complained of a stomache ache, and there was a patch of watermint in a sheltered alcove beneath a small overhang on the bank. He hoped it was sheltered enough that the plant had escaped the freezing rains the day before unscathed.

As he neared the edge of the territory and the alcove, his steps faltered, a natural reaction to what he knew was coming next. Carefully, he crept closer to the water's edge, easing down the bank until he reached the patch of watermint. Thankfully, the plant looked healthy and untouched by the icy rain, and he sent up a silent thanks to StarClan. He quickly picked enough for a small jawful and swiftly made his way back up the bank, taking several steps away from the river for good measure.

Ottersplash lowered the herbs to the ground and took several steadying breaths, looking around as he did so. A vaguely familiar shape caught his eye, off in the distance. Struck by a sudden surge of curiosity, the silver tabby scooped up the pile of herbs and began to move, trotting toward the shape with a light and easy grace.

The closer he got, the clearer the form became, and he was soon able to make out cream-colored fur pulled over a thin, bony frame of a cat. The feline looked around, and he caught a glimpse of unmistakable icy blue eyes. Ottersplash's jaw dropped open, the watermint falling from his grasp.

Not having to smell herbs nearly every moment of her life, Swanfeather's sense of smell had grown sharper. She was not at all decent at hunting with scent alone, but she was able to detect different prey-types a lot easier. Fixing her gaze on a scrawny water-vole that was foolish enough to venture out o it's hiding space, Swanfeather did her best to crouch down. However her steps weren't light enough and the vole disappeared into the reeds, resulting in the she-cat hissing in frustration. Swanfeather turned attention away from hunting for a moment when a scent caught her attention.

Somewhere along the bank was the familiar scent of Ottersplash. Hesitant to bring attention to herself, Swanfather slowly made her way closer to him. She didn't closer than 3 tail lengths, for a brief moment she wanted to ask Ottersplash how he was, but she couldn't find the words.

Instead she stared at the tom-cat her eyes cloudy and weak, but pride kept her from asking for help.
