He hated leafbare, the cold air made his old injury act up to the point walking was painful. Frustrated with himself, Flashbrook found it impossible to sleep anymore. Rising up form his nest beside Burningleaf, the blue-eyed tom gave a gentle lick to his mate's ears. He didn't want to wake him, but instead take in his scent, his fondness for the other tom growing bigger with everyday. Flashbrook never would have imagined that he'd loved Burningleaf with so much of himself. Burningleaf was his past, present and future and only StarClan would change that.

Careful not to wake any of his sleeping denmates, Flashbrook ventured to the entrance of the warrior's den but didn't leave the threshold. The freezing rain that splattered against the still frozen ground reminded the tom-cat that leafbare still held tight. There wouldn't be much hunting, not that he was even good for it anymore. The pain in his leg had gotten worse. At first Flashbrook figured it was due to the weather, but as he saw some the greying fur of his face and paws he knew age was catching up to him as well.

Hidden within him was the fear of losing his senses. He knew if he lost his hearing it would make day to day task more difficult, his eyesight would be the hardest thing to over come. All the other senses he could learn to adjust, but blindness scared him. The fear ate away at his chest as he imagined never being able to see Burningleaf's face ever again. He feared getting lost as he was forced to relearn the camp from a place of darkness.

In a vain attempt to push the thoughts away, Flashbrook tucked his tail over his paws and peered out of the den. A few water droplets landed on his nose, forcing him back as he used a forepaw to wipe them away. He thought about asking Kindleflare for some poppy, something to ease the pain so that he could join his mate in their nest again, but he didn't want to walk in the rain. Instead he waited, praying to StarClan it would stop for a little while.

The short-furred tom curled up tightly into his nest, not immediately registering the movement beside him or the touch to his head. He remained in sleep a while longer, until a vague sense of emptiness came over him. Still mostly asleep, Burningleaf shifted, seeking out the warm body of his mate beside him. When he felt nothing but empy space, his eyes shot open, immediately awake.

Burningleaf lifted his head, golden eyes scanning the darkened den. He eyed the bodies of his sleeping Clanmates before settling on a figure sitting near the den entrance. He gave a small sigh of relief before sitting up and slowly rising to his paws. He allowed himself a moment to stretch out a bit, feeling a dull ache in his joints from the cold. Immediately he thought to the pain his mate must be in. He knew that, with Flashbrook's injury, it took far less to cause him pain, and if Burningleaf could feel the age and cold in his joints, then his mate must surely have it worse.

Ignoring his own body's protests, Burningleaf began to weave his way through the sleeping warriors. Once he got close to the entrance, he paused, tilting his head to the side and watching the male sitting just inside the den. As Burningleaf stared, he realized once again just how beautiful the other male was. His red-tinted cream fur hugged close to his slim frame, and unless you looked closely (which Burningleaf did often), the light greying of his fur was hardly noticable. And then those eyes, bright blue pools that Burningleaf was more than happy to get lost in forever, were magnificent. When he smiled, his entire being lit up, and it filled Burningleaf with such joy to see his mate happy. But now, Flashbrook was looking out into the rain, face solemn and blue eyes darkened. Something seemed to be on his mind.

Burningleaf scraped his paw across the floor of the den, rustling the moss there. He didn't want to approach silently and scare his mate. With a soft smile, he closed the distance between them, settling himself close to Flashbrook's side. He nuzzled gently into the fur of his mate's neck, taking a long, deep breath and breathing him in. Flashbrook smelled familiar, he smelled safe; he smelled like home.

He closed his golden eyes, and without removing his face from his mate's neck, spoke. "What's on your mind, love?" A low, rumbling purr vibrated his chest and he leaned closer, wrapping his tail around Flashbrook, offering what comfort he could. He didn't speak any more, just waited. Flashbrook would speak when he was ready, and until then, Burningleaf would sit beside him and snuggle him and just be there by his side, supporting him always.

The funny thing about being in love with someone is that how easily you can sense them. Flashbrook didn't even need to turn to look to know that it was Burningleaf coming to his side. Titling his head slightly, Flashbrook pressed his nose into the space between his mate's ears, smiling softly as they twitched. He didn't want to part from the closeness they shared, he wanted to remain in this little bit of perfection for the rest of his life. But the chill of the air reminded him that it wasn't possible, life didn't stop for them.

His mate's words weren't ignore, just not answered right away. Flashbrook wasn't sure how to express his concerns for his aging body and over all health. He didn't want Burningleaf to worry about him, there were more important things to spend time on, the training of Niko was one of them. Content with simply remaining close to his mate, Flashbrook finally found the words and whispered them softly just loud enough for Burningleaf to hear.

"I think this leafbare will be my last in the warrior's den," He told him shifting to tilt his head away, Flashbrook knew that his eyes would betray all emotions. If he moved to the elder's den, he'd be acknowledging that he was getting old. Something he had struggled admitting even to himself.

"I think I want to see the kits become warriors and help them settle here before moving to the elder's den," Flashbrook explain in a little more detail. He had a strong feeling that Burningleaf would support him.
