Redblaze
The sun was well in the sky by now, the heat of the day was upon the territory. Redblaze, a young warrior fresh out of training, was once again hunting out by himself. He couldn't wait to see the looks on every cat's face once he brought home a fresh and plump rabbit so early in Leaf-Fall, when prey would normally be retreating to their dens or fattening up in solitary in preparation for the cold season ahead. The tom's red pelt didn't fully fit in against the green grass below his paws, so he stuck to the shady spots where grass was less and trees were more. His jaw was partly opened as he drew in scents, mostly flowers and such filled his nose and mouth, but there was a tinge of fresh mouse. It wasn't a rabbit, but it was still prey.
The russet tom slowed his steps and followed the fresh scent trail, green eyes darting back and forth in-between flowers and grasses as he drew closer. He finally spotted the creature nibbling on a nut in its tiny paws. It was slightly turned towards Redblaze, so he decided he would wait till it looked away before he made a move. He crouched down lower, tail ever so slightly lashing behind him. He was downwind, claws unsheathed, in stance, ready and impatiently waiting for the completely oblivious creature to just turn it's head so he could go for the strike.
Several heart beats passed and still no luck. Redblaze wasn't going to wait anymore. The russet warrior wiggled on his haunches and went to take a paw-step more forwards and-
SNAP!
The mouse turned it's head, looking dead at Redblaze as the twig under his foot broke. It quickly dropped the food it had been holding and went to dart away, and Redblaze went after it with a loud hiss of frustration. It was a fruitless effort. The mouse was too far away for the tom to have any hopes of catching up, but the stubborn warrior wasn't ever one to just give up on prey. His claws tore at the grass as he ran after it, heartbeats feeling like entire moons as he came close and-
The tom ran tripped over his own feet and tumbled forwards, another careless mistake that could have easily of been avoided, he landed on his side before sliding to a halt, dirt covering his sleek red pelt. "Mouse dung!" He cursed loudly as the mouse scampered off into a hole. He repeated the curse three more times and then huffed angrily as he sat up and began to groom himself, thankful that the fall hand't cost him to loose his wind. He was also thankful that no one had seen that horrible fail. A kit could have hunted that mouse down better than he could have. Now he had missed his catch, and was dirty, not to mention slightly sore from the fall. His paw tingled with pain, but he could walk off a little bruising with ease. No matter. He would catch something before he returned to camp. That was for certain.
