Dawnblossom lay in her nest as the moon rose in the night sky, the decision she had yet to make trampling through her mind and keeping her awake. Valerianpaw's endless curiosity was so promising, he seemed genuinely interested in herblore and in the possibilities they held. She recalled how he had asked if she had ever tried to come up with new herb combinations, and that sort of innovation, though potentially dangerous, if done carefully could help StoneClan, and gurdigingly she admitted, ALL the Clans, in the long run. And yet he was nearly a warrior. Why hadn't StarClan led her to him earlier if this path was right for him? A cat could be endlessly curious about everything to do with being a medicine cat and still not be right for the position.
Her gaze pierced through the darkness, in the direction of the nursery where Silverglade and Sandkit would be asleep. She missed the little tom's company. He was just as curious as Valerianpaw, that was for sure. But it was the depth of his compassion at such a young age that really drew the calico she-cat's thoughts down this path. And yet he was young still, it would some moons before he could begin training. Could Sandkit be her apprentice? Her ears twitched uncertainly. He was not StoneClan born. He was not Clanborn at all... but that had benefits as well as bringing up concerns. He was truly neutral when it came to Clan borders... unlike her.
Her gaze fell to her white paws. She knew well her own shortcomings, and she hoped she would not pass them on to her apprentice, whoever StarClan led her to. She closed her eyes, praying silently, I only want what's best for StoneClan. We found refuge outside our own once before, is it the right choice now? StarClan, in your wisdom, guide me. She peered out from her den once more, catching glimpse of the moon before clouds passed over, hiding it from view. She wondered if that was a sign itself, that the decision was hers to make and StarClan would offer no guidance this time. With a soft sigh, she curled up, burying her nose in her tail.
A moment later she found herself wide awake. Fire raged all around her, and yet she found herself unafraid. She looked around calmly, but the fire went on as far as she could see. Feeling her paws drawn forward, she resisted for only a moment, the logical part of her telling her how stupid it would be to walk into the flames. Then she was padding into them, and with each step the fire died away, leaving behind only soft sand to warm her paws. She kept walking until the fire had gone completely. The heat of the sand drew her in, and she laid down, purring, and quickly fell into a dreamless slumber, surrounded by the sand's comforting warmth. When she next woke, the land around her was covered in green, plants and herbs of all kinds had sprung up while she slept. Dew glittered like drops of silver on the leaves, but beneath her, her sandy nest was still warm and comfortable.
When her eyes blinked open in the dawn light the next morning, the dream was still vivid in her mind. Though much of it confused her, one thing was perfectly clear. StarClan was guiding her to Sandkit. The other parts of the dream had numerous possible interpretations, but no matter what way she took them, the answer was still apparent. StarClan accepted him, Clanborn or not. Perhaps they had even led Silverglade and Sandkit to StoneClan for this very purpose. It had been her own sister who had found them, after all. Rising to her paws, she shook out her fur, giving herself a quick grooming. She thought she felt grits of sand scrape against her tongue, but she found no evidence of them after a quick look. She let out a soft purr of amusement. Apparently StarClan wanted to drive home their point.
She slipped from her den, standing just outside and watching the Clan wake. The dawn patrol was on its way out and a couple cats stood at the freshkill pile, picking through what was left from the day before, while a couple others were heading out to replenish it. StoneClan needed its warriors as well. Valerianpaw was already well on his way. She turned her gaze to the nursery, wondering if she should speak with Silverglade about her son's future now, or wait until they had time to wake properly. She decided it could wait for the sun to rise a bit higher. It wasn't as though Sandkit could begin training that day anyway.
Her ears twitched thoughtfully and she looked toward Hawkstar's den. After a moment, she made her way toward it, deciding she should tell him what StarClan had shared with her, in case he had any of the concerns she had about taking an apprentice that was not Clanborn. She wasn't sure where her leader would stand on the matter, but StarClan had spoken. She paused outside, aware that Hawkstar shared his den with his mate and unsure if she was up and out yet, she didn't want to disturb them. “Hawkstar? May I speak with you?” she called quietly, waiting outside.
It's all right, 'cause there's beauty in the breakdown.
