There was something beautiful about the stars, something that called out to the white she-cat as she woke from her sleep and found herself in the center of camp. Out of her siblings, and well the rest of her family, Brightpool was the oddest of the bunch. She found herself solace in silence and spent a lot of time on her own, but no one knew her secret.

Rarely was Brightpool ever truly alone, she was surrounded by the spirit of her dead-clan mates, but in the most relaxing and calming sort of way. This night was by far the most active she had seen in since the war. Warriors with stars in their pelts walks and talk with each other, their words were jumbled and hard to understand, it was as if they were speaking under water. Brightpool noticed a few star-filled pelt, it seemed that the most recently dead cats had the hardest time being heard, but the older ones had wisdom to fill Brightpools years for seasons to come. Birghtpool hadn't spent much time talking with the dead cat she saw, most would be there for a couple of nights before going off into the sky to what she assumed was StarClan, it was peaceful to watch the warriors say their goodbyes and depart willingly. However, that wasn't always the case with every cat.

Blazestar had been a young a new leader when the fire broke out. He lost all of his new lives protecting cats that might never remember him, StarClan knows that Brightpool had no idea who he was as a warrior other then he helped everyone evacuate and returned to save more but perished. He was one of the cats that Brightpool saw every night but never saw them leave. There she sat watching the star-pelted leader from where he stood, looking just as proud and strong as before his death, perhaps there was something she could do for him. Her thoughts lingered on the leader long enough to not notice an approaching figure.

Of all his children, he interacted very little with Brightpool; it was of no fault of either one of them, it seemed that she had inherited the more aloof part of his personality, not the social butterfly genes of his mate, Firebird. He gave his offspring the space they needed to grow and work through their problems by themselves, but he would be there, watching them from the corners of his eerily pale eyes as they went out their lives, always within reach should they realize they needed his help or his familial support on any matter at all. Brightpool did not seem to embrace this philosophy quite like Kindleflare had, and with that in mind, Darkcloud was making the effort to seek her out first, wanting to maintain a cordial, earnest bond with his kin without imposing on their lives too much.

Funny, though Darkcloud was unaware of this, that all three of his children seemed to be carrying secrets. Kindleflare had feelings for a cat of her own gender, Nightstep had been trained by an earthbound demon and participated in his own manner of unsavory events, and Brightpool could see the spirits of the dead at all times. He had secrets himself, but they were not the kind that were burdensome, that needed to be taken off his chest in order for him to breathe deeply; espying the pristine white coat, plush and soft around the edges that would never fail to remind him of her kithood days, Darkcloud approached.

"Beautiful night," he mewed, following her gaze upward to the stars. The senior warrior had been watching his daughter's movements, how her ears would occasionally flick and rotate as though catching snippets of unheard conversations, those liquid amber eyes focusing on various things that Darkcloud could not see. "Watching for ghosts?" Darkcloud's attempt at a dry joke was not so far off the mark; without her telling him so, he would never know just how true his 'silly question' actually was. What are you thinking of, Brightpool? What he was thinking of, was how appropriate her name had become; when she had been born, he had suggested Brightkit for the beautiful pristine glow of her white fur, like moonlight or freshly fallen snow. This time, several moons later, the name Brightpool spoke of the she-cat's eyes, and with the starlight and the claw-shaped crescent moon glowing down upon them, he saw the radiance reflected in amber.

Yes, the name was very fitting. And he, in his formal looking black and white coat, had been aptly named as well.

The familiar scent of her father had brought her attention away from watching for fallen clan-mates to into the tangible would. Her tail flicked back and worth for a moment as she watched her father, ears twisting to hear his words. It was not a well know fact that Brightpool could see fallen cats, it has been kept a secret and only her father and Kindlefire knew. Brightpool's relationship with her mother was nearly non-existent. I hope no one else knows what I can see. Was her silent answer to her father's poor joke. She didn't find the humor in his words, perhaps it was because she saw the ghosts for what they were, lost cats with no idea where to go, they were hurting and Brightpool saw that pain first hand.

Trying to appear normal, Brightpool withdrew with thinking about the dead souls with a solemn answer. "No, they all seem to have found their peace, even if its for a moment." Her voice was small and soft, much like her appearance as her white pelt reflected back the shine of what little moon there was.

"How are you father?" She asked him politely, turning her powerful amber eyes toward him, if eyes were the gate way to the soul, Brightpool's were a gigantic door, emotion clearly read across the amber orbs. Brightpool likely because of her gift had always been open with herself and those around her, the complexity of her eyes was perhaps a factor in why she didn't have many friends. Why look at a cat who's eyes made it seem they were looking not at you but into you. Brightpool was a doorway between the living and the dead, a role she hadn't yet settled into fully.

She carried the weight of worlds in her eyes. Darkcloud see well into the golden depths, see that her path differed so heavily from the rest of his offspring. He could do nothing more than acknowledge her powers, acknowledge that she was chosen to walk along the stars with her paws still firmly rooted on the ground. She wasn't a medicine cat—Brightpool was something else entirely. Thoughts of Flameshadow, his departed son, flickered behind those eerily pale eyes of the senior warrior, experience dictating that he bear his grief with dignity; that did not mean he did not mourn for Flameshadow, in the quiet hours when the rest of the Clan was asleep and his thoughts naturally turned towards his family.

"Have you ever seen him?" Darkcloud changed the subject; not to say he was unwell, but because his physical health and emotional well-being were seconded to a much more important question. There was no need to clarify whom Darkcloud was referring to; Flameshadow's loss had hit them all very hard. He cared little for StarClan's ways, but they still garnered his respect on occasions—especially when they were touching the life of his daughter so heavily. It would be foolish not to utilize her unique talents to know how Flameshadow was fairing; this was a family matter, and Darkcloud appraised their surroundings with a cold, searching eye. Not so much as a whisker. Good. They had the camp to themselves, in a sense that the rest were asleep in their nests with only the glitter of silverpelt above them for company.

The shadows crept and crawled around the pair, it would've been ominous if they had given the dark any power over them. These were cats who were comfortable in the blackness; it was in the very nature of the black-and-white tom to enjoy it, prizing the advantage of stealth the night provided him. Brightpool, perhaps, would be accustomed to it for different reasons. Though he possessed no supernatural abilities, he had not been chosen by StarClan for anything more than a decent life (he considered himself blessed in many ways, for all the hardship LightningClan had faced in recent moons), but, in those pale green peripherals, Darkcloud entertained the notion that he could see his oldest son. See a haze of ginger and white fur, a familiar scent, stale with lost time, would waft on by, carried by an invisible breeze.

These were just the imaginings of a cold, detached warrior, expressing something other than cold detachment. Nothing less, nothing more.

"Have you seen him?"

An empty feeling took over the she-cat as her father said those words, dread filled up the hollowness that was Brightpool. Lying to her father wasn't ideal how she could explain so someone who didn't see what she saw that she hadn't seen her brother, that there was a glimmer of him, hiding away from her. Her instinct was to lie, soften the blow to be something he could manage. "Yes father, I saw him walk into the stars"Could she pull off such a lie? Perhaps discarding the idea that her brother's spirit remained, it might be easier to just say she hadn't seen him, there was some truth in it.

Conflict flashed across the she-cats amber eyes and she quick to turn her head away to discourage him from reading her expression. The death of her elder brother was hard but her relationship with him was barely there, they had greeted each other like kin but nothing more. Darkcloud seemed to want answers, Brightpool wanted to give them to him, prove to her father that her gift was worth something, give him comfort in his son's death.

Shifting her attention toward the sky again her eyes close as the beat of her heart echoed loudly in her ears. Brightpool wasn't a liar and she'd do what was right even if it hurt her father in the long run. With a deep inhale she aloud the new fresh breathe to fill her, an attempt to push out the dread within her.

"I have seen him, I know he still remains here...where he um..passed on." Brightpool struggled to find the correct words. Would be kinder to be blunt about it? Explain to her father that the same weak tom that was his son still hung around, upset his life had been cut short and that he wished for a second chance, he wasn't ready to die. Flameshadow's fragile frame was the one Brightpool saw and it wouldn't be until he move on that he'd become healthy again. Brightpool didn't want to fill her father's head with a poor image of his son. That his spirit had dull eyes, sickness still hung to his pelt that seemed even more grim and matted with sickness. Brightpool didn't have the courage to give her father all the details and instead stuck with the broad, ease his mourning.
