It was Badgerpaw that Frozenrain had been elected to mentor. And, a thrilling surge of excitement had coursed through the pretty she-cat's frame upon being chosen out of all worthy Stoneclan warriors to at last take on an apprentice. However, she'd never admit to it. Arising in the early hours as she always did – being the committed warrior she'd from day one promised to be – the slender, gray-and-white furred she-cat slipped through the Stoneclan camp to glide her way to the Apprentice Den with elegance laced to the bone. Perhaps, pawing awake Badgerpaw on what Frozenrain desired to be their first day of training wasn't the best way to begin blooming their mentor-apprentice relationship. But, the work-oriented version of Frozenrain that every Stoneclan cat knew best probably sparked in every feline's mind that'd she do nothing less, than the best itself with training Badgerpaw in fields of hunting, battle, and whatever else they confronted along the way.
Poking her pretty head around the den corner, amusement laced openly in her pale blue eyes. Entering abruptly, Frozenrain had seemingly zero interest in the fact more apprentices than just Badgerpaw were asleep. However, she had the common courtesy to at least address the black-and-white furred tom quietly. Nudging him with a delicate paw, her expression was utmost inviting for the moment the dark gray eyes of Badgerpaw noticed his elected mentor towering above his rested body.
She forced the words of greeting she had back down her throat, not wanting to disturb the other apprentices from their sleep. Only once she had firmly decided Badgerpaw was aware she wanted him awake... did Frozenrain gracefully turn tail and retreat from the den so she could speak more freely with him outside.

Feeling an unusual pressure along his flank, the tom's eyes shot open with a sudden awareness of the waking world. The scent of his mentor filled his nose and he lifted his head to watch her vanish from the apprentice's den. Quietly the apprentice picked his way out of the den without disturbing his companions.
Emerging into the morning daylight, Badgerpaw blinked, the slits in his eyes growing thin to compensate for the overwhelming light. He slipped to Frozenrain's side and nodded a wordless greeting. Vaguely, he wondered what his mentor had planned for the pair today. The apprentice's gaze focused on his mentor with a distinct curiosity; he knew very little about Frozenrain, having taken little interest in cats around him other than Cricketpaw. Of course, he got the impression that she would be, at least, a decent mentor.
The tom's black ears perked as he waited for Frozenrain to begin speaking. Of course, he knew quite a bit already about the generalities of being a warrior. Cricketpaw had often dragged Badgerpaw around in and out of the nursery, and their father never hesitated to bring the pair his latest catches along with knowledge of them. It was time to see how those experiences would pay off.

The young tom seated himself at the feline's side, offering a silent nod in brief acknowledgment. She returned it out of common politeness, although, instinct caused the silent greeting of her own to be accompanied with the warmness of a pleasant grin. “Badgerpaw,” she began, familiarizing herself with the identification gifted upon the apprentice.
Frozenrain wasn't one to simply set off and train. There was more to her methods then that. Up until this moment, the Stoneclan warrior hadn't conversed much with Badgerpaw. Admittedly, she was curious to know a thing or two about the young tom before they began anything further.
Settling herself in front of the black-and-white furred apprentice, her baby blue irises fixated upon the glorious uniqueness held in the tom's dark gray eyes. It was a trait she would have liked to inherit from her own bloodline, however, Frozenrain didn't have anything to openly complain about when it came to her appearance. “I don't want our time spent together as mentor and apprentice to be awkward. It'll be much easier for the both of us if we have an understanding about one another. I don't want to press any limits that venture into territories that make you uncomfortable.” If the young apprentice feared anything, or was uncomfortable under certain lights, Frozenrain was pushing him to be honest with her. She didn't want to simply be a mentor to Badgerpaw, she wanted to share a bond with the first cat placed under her own guidance. “More than anything, it's important for you to trust me at all times, no matter the circumstances.” Sometimes, training ventured into somewhat dangerous situations. The tabby furred warrior couldn't promise injury would be avoided at every corner, but, it'd certainly be more beneficial for both cats if the apprentice didn't lack trust. “Do you think you'll be able to trust me throughout our training?”
Honesty was a factor Frozenrain expected without hesitation. She knew well of Badgerpaw's lack of interest in his fellow Stoneclan cats. He had always tended to keep to himself. This was the main reason behind Frozenrain's questioning toward trust. And, she'd honestly appreciate a 'no' over a dishonest 'yes'. Badgerpaw may, in the moment, not be a warrior. But, she expected from him and all apprentices alike exactly what she expected from her fellow warriors.

Acknowledging his mentor's words with a flick of his ear, the tom took a long pause before he even considered giving the she-cat a reply. His first thought was that she had no right to request his utmost trust, but after reconsidering, Badgerpaw decided it would be in his best interest to at least try to work with his mentor. "I will make one thing clear, at the very least," the apprentice meowed flatly. "For now, I'll trust you to do your part, but should you prove incompetent, I won't hesitate to ask Fallingstar for another mentor."
Tail curled around and the tom fell quiet again, satisfied with his answer. Frozenrain should have at least been able to understand quite a bit about him from his statement; though he was willing to collaborate, the moment she failed his expectations was the moment that anything that connected them would be severed. With an impatient twitch of his ear, the tom questioned, "What is it that you have planned to start with?"

"For now, I'll trust you to do your part, but should you prove incompetent, I won't hesitate to ask Fallingstar for another mentor." Frozenrain's baby blue eyes fell upon the figure of Badgerpaw, skimming the entirety of his figure before fixating into the depths of his gray irises. Although his drive to assure he was learning from a cat with useful information was an admirable quality, that didn't lessen the fact his tone and overall word-choice were unappreciated. Especially, since Frozenrain was a feline that didn't only approve of chivalric acts, but often frowned upon the tom-cat's that weren't familiar with how to properly use it. Badgerpaw could be excused if to consider the fact he was still merely an apprentice. However, it didn't stop her from flashing the youthful tom a disapproving glance.
Leaving Badgerpaw's first comment unspoken upon, she immediately took to addressing his followup question. “Today, I was planning on addressing the sharpening of your hunting tactics to aid in increasing your success rate.” Frozenrain stood from her seated position, pivoting on her heels with a graceful radiation. Shaggy furred tail flicking to signal Badgerpaw's following, she angled her direction for the Barren Scrublands – the area she figured would be most beneficial when taking into consideration the teaching environments.
“Tell me, Badgerpaw,” Frozenrain's head twisted over lithe shoulder blades, pale blue eyes momentarily fixating on her apprentice. “When your mind wanders to the concepts of the hunt: what are a few of the key qualities you think are necessary to assure success?” Frozenrain's reasoning for asking such a question were to develop an idea as to what way Badgerpaw viewed hunting. From a stealthy, quick-to-react perspective? Or perhaps, a perspective entirely deprived off of chance and luck? Honestly, she was hoping for dear life that the second option that wandered to mind wasn't suited to Badgerpaw. For, she didn't at all consider the success rate of hunting to be entirely upon the concept of luck.

Even if his attitude was not to his mentor's liking, Badgerpaw cared little. He could do whatever he wanted without taking criticism from the she-cat or any other, since in reality only Cricketpaw's opinion mattered to him.
At Frozenrain's command, the black-and-white tom padded after her, though he only half-listened to her words. Hunting was the focus of the day, he gathered that much, but he found that the she-cat's choice of words was bordering on pompous. Regardless, he padded after her until the two reached the rough, dry territory of the barren scrublands. Frozenrain stopped walking, and in response Badgerpaw settled into a sitting position, his tail curling around him while he casually surveyed the area. Of course, since it was hunting, he knew that the training would be one-on-one, but the area seemed to be lacking in any presence, prey or cat.
Tail flicking, Badgerpaw gave Frozenrain a methodical answer. "Deliberation. Of course, it also helps to be able to think on your feet if your predictions are incorrect." In the young tom's eyes, the hunt was completely dependent on a cat's skills, mental and physical. One could always catch their prey with the proper knowledge and intent. Already, Badgerpaw had quieted his breathing and was trying to detect the scent of anything which he might be able to hunt, though he doubted that in the cold weather it would be easy. Looking once again at Frozenrain, the tom meowed, "Basically, all you need to know is what you're doing and how to do it."

Reaching their destination, the she-cat's baby blue irises began to perform an in depth analysis of the area, her nose working equally as hard to pinpoint any fresh fragrances. Detecting Badgerpaw's voice, the she-cat's gray-white ears swiveled backward to be more alert to his words. Of course, deliberation was an excellent quality to have. She glanced over lithe shoulder blades toward the black-and-white apprentice, offering a solemn nod in agreement with his statement.
"Basically, all you need to know is what you're doing and how to do it." Frozenrain lightly swished her tail, implanting a keen gaze upon her apprentice. He seemed quite confident in what he knew, perhaps, confident enough to demonstrate? “With all of these points listed, it seems only natural you already understand the basics of hunting, hm?” Frozenrain blinked thoughtfully, her black nose wrinkling with a inhalation of oxygen.
The scent was faint. So very faint. However, it was present enough in the atmosphere that a cat with an incredibly focused mindset, much like her own in the current moment, would be able to pick up on it and differ it from the rest of the more familiar, abundant scents of nature. “Can you smell anything?” [/i][/b] The she-cat questioned, taking another firm analysis of the scent to assure it was in fact prey, and in fact able to be tracked with the proper determination. In all honesty, with the lack of faith it seemed Badgerpaw had in Frozenrain's abilities: she'd be quite surprised if he wasn't able to capture the scent. From the way his persona brushed off, it could easily convince a cat that he didn't seem entirely swayed to believe he required training from a mentor. [/blockquote][/size]
