"Medicine Cats are supposed to be neutral, right?" interjected Eagletalon, drawing the eyes of the two she-cats back to him once more, the sandy warrior pacing back and forth as though trying to wear a four-foot-long hole to the center of the earth. "You're not gonna like it, Fallingstar, but we might have to ask another Clan's Medicine Cat to teach one of our Clanmates a thing or two." Great StarClan, what if someone gets greencough or whitecough during Leafbare? What if someone gets ANYTHING? Eagletalon was struggling to come up with a way out of this slaughter pit their Medicine Cat left them in by disappearing. On one paw, they needed to have someone trained or to start training to become their next Medicine Cat - unless StarClan decided to fill the dreams of a chosen cat with all the knowledge they'd need, that would be helpful, but Eagletalon wasn't holding his breath. On the other paw, asking another Clan's Medicine Cat for assistance would let that cat know how vulnerable they wore. Eagletalon preferred an iron defense with not so much as a chink in their armor, but sometimes pretending to have an airtight defense was a little more trouble than it was worth.
Especially if they were in this much trouble even before winter had arrived.
Eagletalon was getting a headache, the kind that throbbed right in the middle of his frontal lobe, the warrior growling with frustration. "Can't you go ask StarClan about it? Anything? I'm not smart enough to figure this out with either one of you," mewed Eagletalon, readily acknowledging one of his more obvious faults, "but I'll support whatever decision you make, Fallingstar."

Is that not what StarClan is for? Hailstrike shot back in her head, not daring to say it aloud. Preferring to keep her feet planted in the tangible world, she did not often ponder their ancestors, instead brushing them aside since their interference in her daily life was rather minimal. Skeptical by nature, the warrior occasionally found herself wondering just how much of StarClan was coincidence and how much of it was true. It was not that she did not believe in them, but rather, she doubted them, having no claim to the title of their most devout follower and loyal believer. She would not question Fallingstar's believe in their ancestors; in Hailstrike's mind, a strong belief in StarClan was a prerequisite for becoming a leader. However, the warrior did find herself wondering at their silence. Surely all the StoneClan warriors up there saw their predicament; why would they not send a sign to Fallingstar? And these are the ancestors to whom we are supposed to send prayers and praise.
Eagletalon's thoughtful tone interrupted her thoughts, and icy eyes, which had been staring into the glassy surface of one of the nearby pools, flicked over to glance at him. Her tail twitched as she considered his words. They suited her anti-StarClan feeling, though she knew that that would fade with time. In their current situation, it sounded reasonable and like a very probable course of action. Medicine Cats were supposed to be neutral, so in theory, Eagletalon's plan would work. But... "If we end up doing that," Hailstrike pointed out, "We will have to pick a Medicine Cat with some discretion, and preferebly one without a grudge against us. Though they are supposed to be neutral, no cat is indifferent to their clan's general point of view."
What bothered her most about that idea, however, was the idea that they would be relying on another clan for help. By requesting that help, StoneClan would be admitting, to the whole forest perhaps, that they were at their most vulnerable, without a medicine cat or anyone with any real knowledge of herbs. If that information got into the wrong paws, then it might have been better to attempt to survive leaf-bare without a medicine cat. But then what would they do if illness began to spread throughout camp? She let out a frustrated hiss, clenching her jaw. StoneClan was stuck between a rock and a hard place, and she did not like it one bit. The helplessness she felt, the inability to do anything to improve the situation tore at her.
Eagletalon spoke again, and she acknowledged the compliment in his words with a stiff nod. Taking a deep breath, she proposed, "Let's talk now and consider the pros and cons of each course of action. I think we have two main choices: the one that Eagletalon suggested--" She gave a slight nod in the tom's direction "--which was to ask for another clan's help, or to continue what we have been doing so far, which is to try our luck and hope for a sign from StarClan." Hailstrike paused, considering if she had left anything out. They could always attempt to find a feline knowledgable about herbs on their own, but the chances of that were slim. After all, how many cats made a habit of studying herbs?

| [atrb=width,390,true][bg=003333]Fallingstar's eyes darted between the tom and she-cat as they spoke, analyzing their words and weighing her options. Though Eagletalon made a valid point about neutrality, Hailstrike's words made a greater impact. The most realistic plan would, of course, be to have an apprentice train with another Clan's medicine cat, but there were many flaws with that plan. First, StoneClan and LightningClan were already engaged on the battlefield; NightClan was too unpredictable to trust, which left the option of 2 medicine cats.
Swanfeather, of RainClan, would have been a good option since her Clan was closer to StoneClan than Spottedfeather's. However, Fallingstar imagined that she might be taking on her own apprentice soon, and taking on two at a time would be more than necessary. With a sigh, the leader shook her head, "It is out of the question to ask assistance from LightningClan or NightClan, and the other two medicine cats are not likely suitable to take on an apprentice from another Clan."
Nodding toward Hailstrike, Fallingstar meowed, "For now we shall have to trust in StarClan to guide us." Although her words sounded confident, Fallingstar's faith was wavering. Boulderstar had told her nothing about Crowfang or his successor, she hadn't heard a single thing from her ancestors since she visited Moon Tree to receive her 9 lives of a leader. Even then, the cats of StarClan had been extremely aloof.
Fallingstar wasn't sure what the relationship between the leader and warrior ancestors was supposed to be, but she had always thought that they would be supporting her when she needed it. So, why weren't they present now? The leader looked back again between Hailstrike and Eagletalon. "We are going through hard times, so I want the two of you to keep an eye out for any signs of our next medicine cat. And Eagletalon, I want you to assist Falconleap." Closing her eyes for a moment, Fallingstar heaved a sigh. "I shall return to Moon Tree sooner than expected."

Eagletalon dipped his head immediately, acknowledging Fallingstar's words with a passionate stare that seemed to burn a hole into the grass, his thoughts no longer settled on the cats here but on the cats back at camp. "You'll need an escort to the Moon Tree, Swiftpaw doesn't have a mentor at the moment, and perhaps a trip to the Moon Tree would do Smokeface some good..." The sudden dip in his tone into darkness was apartment, Eagletalon's opinion of the senior warrior apparently on a decline ever since she'd gotten a bit out of control with the news over her son Warhawk's death. He felt bad, he really did, and he would've shredded Lionstep himself had he truly believed the other warrior had killed him. When they collected his body, it was obvious he drowned in the river along StarClan's Claws, not from a bite to the back of the neck or otherwise.
To be frank though, his most sincerest of sympathies was with Warhawk's mate Pyrelight and their four kittens. It was always tough losing a loved one, especially a mate and father. He couldn't offer much advise to the grieving she-cat and Smokeface's grieving family, but sympathies only went as far as reason and logic did. If that vengeful she-cat, the mother of her brood, decided to do something mousebrained concerning TreeClan - well that was on her. He was bound to stick up for his other Clanmates, sure, and he would help fight off whatever maelstorm of bloodshed she brought down upon them, but he sure as heck wouldn't like it.
"What are we supposed to look for in our next medicine cat?" mewed Eagletalon, an obvious note of concern slipping past his jaws and making his brow furrow and tail lash. He was really really bad when it came to understanding Medicine Cats, how the heck was he supposed to find one? And Fallingstar was definitely taking an escort, right? He knew she was rather...suspicious when it came to other cats, but just because Shadeclaw had betrayed them, didn't mean that StoneClan was the harbinger of lies and deceit. There were still cats she could trust, two in particular, were right in front of her.

She found herself nodding along to Fallingstar's words. Unfortunately, the leader was right; there were obvious reasons for why they could not turn to NightClan or LightningClan for help, and the warrior could not imagine RainClan coming to their defense. TreeClan would be the most probable source of help, but even then, Spottedfeather had her own clan to help. It was not a very practical trip to travel across StarClan's Claws to help a clan that was not even her own. But trusting in StarClan... What had they done for them so far? Chased Crowfang off? Hailstrike was less than inclined toward trusting their silent ancestors, and she could not ignore the resentment that burned like a small, persistent flame in the deepest part of her gut. She could do nothing else but nod, however; Fallingstar's orders were analogous to the Warrrior Code, in that they should be followed without question.
Her less than pleasant thoughts toward StarClan were soon brushed aside by more prominent ones, featuring the leader's return trip to the Moon Tree. An ear flicked as Eagletalon spoke on the subject, hinting not-so-subtly that perhaps Swiftpaw and Smokeface should be the felines accompanying his sister on the journey. Perhaps close proximity with sensible cats would do that crazy she-cat some good, Hailstrike found herself thinking cynically, eyes darkening slightly at the mention of the queen. On the way there, Fallingstar could talk some sense into Smokeface, and perhaps being in the presense of the Moon Tree would reinforce her leader's ideas. "I think that Smokeface would benefit from a trip to the Moon Tree as well," The warrior commented. It will get her out of my way, at the very least. "And I am sure that Swiftpaw would love the chance to be on that patrol. Of course, it is neither my place nor Eagletalon's," she glanced at the tom, "to pick out the cats you will take on the patrol with you; these are merely suggestions."
A grim smirk touched the side of of her mouth when she considered the answer to the tom's second question. "Loyalty to the clan," Hailstrike answered immediately, drly. "Whatever it is in a cat that will prevent them from deserting us without any notice." Granted, Crowfang may not have deserted them, but regardless of the intent, the consequences remained the same. And if she honestly considered the question, the warrior could truthfully say that did not know what to look for in a medicine cat. Competence and an understanding of herbs, she supposed. The ability to get along well with a variety of cats. An inner steel that would allow him or her to deal with the more stubborn, more mouse-brained of the warriors. And patience. Everlasting patience.

| [atrb=width,390,true][bg=003333]Almost instantly, the leader replied to the question Eagletalon posed. "I don't ask you to find me a replacement, I doubt that will happen, but rather to watch for the footsteps of StarClan." The phrase tasted like bile; footsteps of StarClan, right. As if they cared so deeply about StoneClan's condition.
Fallingstar's deep green gaze focused sharply on both warriors, her ears pricked as she intently soaked up all the information that the StoneClan warriors offered her. Closing her eyes for a moment, the leader nodded, "I'll rely on you, Hailstrike, as well as Granitepaw to accompany me." Of course, there were many cats that would be available for the trip, but Fallingstar wanted to keep her group as small as possible.
She loathed having to leave the Clan alone, if only for a night, under such circumstances, so she didn't want to take too many warriors with her. "I believe Smokeface would also make an adequate addition to the patrol. Eagletalon, I'd like you to stay and camp and assist Falconleap should she require it." she meowed. Although Fallingstar was giving orders as if she were perfectly aware of what she was doing, the whole thing made her nervous.
The StoneClan warrior didn't have the time she'd have liked to make arrangements, but things would have to proceed quickly. With a wave of her tail, Fallingstar gestured to the she-cat before her, gaze focusing on the lean warrior. "Inform Granitepaw of the trip, I'll talk to Smokeface as soon as we return to camp. I'd like to leave at dawn tomorrow at the latest." Wrapping up her decision's, the dull golden she-cat's tail curled around her paws, closing the discussion. As much as it pained her to do so, Fallingstar was beginning to believe that Boulderstar was letting her down.
Her lives were only newly received; how could they also require a new medicine cat at the same time? Everything was wearing down on the young leader, but Fallingstar was determined to stay strong for her Clan. For once, in a long time, the she-cat's head sank down into an almost submissive pose, and she sent a silent prayer to the warrior ancestors.
