Well, that is good news," Cloverstar remarked after she'd finished washing her face. "Well done, Hawkeye. We'll hold her ceremony at sunset." She dismissed the warrior with a nod, certain he'd be excited to share that with his apprentice.
So Birchpaw, the former loner kit, had passed her warrior assessment... It was impressive to say the least, especially since several apprentices she shared her den with had been training longer than she had. Cloverstar would be interested to see if Birchpaw might become a motivating example for the current apprentices to train harder to pass their assessments as well, or if they might become bitter and jealous of her success. As a cat whose training had lasted longer than usual, Cloverstar personally wouldn't have cared about Birchpaw's success, so she figured she'd be fine. Probably.
As soon as the sun began to dip below the horizon, the MistClan leader rose and began to make her way up to the Lichen Ledge. Several had seen her start to move there and began to gather below, prompting others to join before she even summoned them formally. When she did though, the rest of MistClan slipped out of dens and from just outside the cave to observe the ceremony.
"Tonight, another warrior joins our ranks," she announced, and beckoned Birchpaw forward with her tail. "Hawkeye tells me you're ready to become a warrior. And it was your first time training an apprentice," she said to him. "You've done a fine job with Birchpaw." Cloverstar didn't often praise her warriors - she preferred to reserve that for special occasions... definitely not just because she forgot about that kind of thing. At least she made it count when she did remember.
"I, Cloverstar, leader of MistClan, call upon our warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of the warrior code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Birchpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" It was in that moment Cloverstar realized she'd forgotten to decide on a name for Birchpaw. She usually brainstormed some while they were still training, mostly just interested in making sure they would have names that didn't sound stupid. She'd thought of several for Birchpaw but hadn't actually chosen one.
Once she heard the traditional response though, she moved on, her words a little more slow and deliberate as she ran through the potential names in her head. "Then by the powers of StarClan..." Birchflame? Birchfang? Somehow, neither seemed to really suit the young she-cat before her. "...I give you your warrior name." And as her eyes met Birchpaw's, framed by that bloom of gray fur, it seemed to hit her in the face, the most obvious name for her - and it sounded pretty good, too - Cloverstar could personally confirm that one. "Birchpaw, from this moment you will be known as Birchmask. StarClan honors your independence, drive, and spirit, and we welcome you as a full warrior of MistClan."
Cloverstar leaped down from the ledge to rest her muzzle on Birchmask's head, stepping back once she'd received the customary shoulder-lick and the Clan began chanting her new name.
