It was a beautiful day to do anything, really, so Cloverstar decided it was about time her apprentice learned to fish. They had covered the basics so far - dull, but necessary. She'd told him the only useful bits of the warrior code (defend the Clan, the leader's word is law, don't play with your food, blah blah blah...) but didn't plan on doing any sort of follow-up with that, then given him a tour of the territory on another sunny afternoon quite like this one. Being alone with a younger cat, their mind literally there to be molded by her - their mentor - was a feeling she had missed. She'd forgotten how she had enjoyed coaxing out the traits of Crowstalker she'd seen real value in, like his cunning and viciousness. She hoped there would be something interesting she could make flourish inside Hailpaw as well.
"How are you feeling about water these days, Hailpaw?" she asked him by way of greeting after he'd finished his breakfast, not particularly interested in his answer as she planned to get his paws wet today whether he enjoyed it or not. She'd swept up to him without preamble, motioning for him to get up as well and follow her. "We're going to the beach today. If we're lucky, we might catch more than a few fish." She had an idea, and had been wondering for a few days if it might work.
Outside of camp, she paused to address him. "It's a bit of a ways away, so we'll be running. Try to keep up." She sized him up for a moment, deciding that his legs had most likely grown longer in the time that had passed since she'd first showed him Crayfish Beach. His pace hadn't been that impressive back then, but hopefully he'd be quicker now that he was a bit lankier.
With that, she sprang off into the pine trees at a brisk pace. She didn't use her full speed, both to conserve her own energy and Hailpaw's handicap of being smaller in size. The pace was quick enough that it wasn't long before they were running alongside the glittering lake, their ears full of the sounds of gulls and the gentle lap of water. She slowed as they approached Crayfish Beach, padding up to the shore to take a drink from the lake-water, giving her apprentice a chance to catch his breath. When she'd finished, she turned to face him. "Do you know anything about fishing yet?" she asked him, thinking it practical to find out if he knew more than nothing. Sometimes apprentices were stupid and talked about things as if they were masters already - for all she knew, one of his denmates had told him it was good to scare off the fish by flinging his shadow over the water. "Anything you've heard from your denmates, or other warriors? If not... what do you think is something you should keep in mind when you fish?" Might as well judge his intelligence while she was at it, right?

i find it very, very easy to be true
i find myself alone when each day is through
yes, i'll admit that i'm a fool for you
because you're mine...
