Overlooking the gorge below, sits a large tom with a cream colored coat. His pale yellow eyes look out across the scar in the land that had been left behind by the earthquake. He shakes his head, still shocked that such an event had occurred in his lifetime. It wasn't often that such a disastrous event would shake the clans in the way this had. There had been so many lives lost and so many changes to the land around them. Everyone had to relearn their own homes and accept that their old lives were long gone. It was definitely a rocky road to get to where they were now. But much like his clan before, Gorgeclan was now strong and capable. While they had to take on cats from other clans, which he didn't entirely approve of, they were united as one now. And they would be a force to be reckoned with for anything in the future.
His mind slowly began to wonder off at the thought of what all happened. Visions of his rogue sister starting to flash in his head. Did she survive the quake? Was she safe out there somewhere? Or were the brothers all the remained of their family line now? The tom lets out a frustrated sigh at this. He hadn't seen hide nor hair of Odessa in several seasons now so he may never know of her whereabouts. But, if she was alive, he knew she was probably managing on her own. She was a resourceful and clever she-cat so she would be among the first to figure out the best ways to survive out here.
The sudden cry of a thrush overhead snaps the tom back to the present. His eyes narrow as he glances up at the happy bird overhead. The feathered creature spreading out it's wings and tossing his head about, trying to impress some female nearby. 'Noisy things...' He thinks to himself, slightly annoyed by the loud show above. There wasn't anymore time to just sit about, there was a mission for today. Testing Cardinalpaw's hunting abilities. The stream bed played the perfect stage for this show of skill, prey of all sorts gathering for a drink here throughout the day.
Now it was just a matter of waiting on his apprentice. Moving safely away from the edge of the gorge, the tom sits himself beside a tree a little ways from the stream. He kept the stream itself within sight from his location but didn't want to spoil her chances by getting too close for prey to detect too early on. Scaring everything off was the last thing he wanted to do before the training had even begun. He wanted Cardinalpaw to have every opportunity to choose the type of prey she wanted to pursue here.

The apprentice's goal was to arrive within Lionheart's sight before he became impatient or disappointed. Cardinalpaw claimed that she'd never show up late, preferring to demonstrate to her mentor that she could accommodate for what she declared. Thankfully for the damsel, she hadn't known much about said Earthquake or the five clans before the new three. She swallowed the lump in her throat as she hoisted herself upright from her position in camp, nearby the other apprentices, and left. She remembered that Lionheart had discussed today's lesson, briskly trekking after his aroma. He vamoosed not long ago, ameliorating that she'd arrive at a decent time. Following the bachelor's fading scent, she exhaled softly, whiskers twitching as she ambulated in his direction. As she closed in on his presence, she noticed that he appeared in deep thought, instinctually dipping her figure lower as she monitored the monumental tomcat. Her gaze fixated on the thrush overhead, hearing their cries. She gradually raised herself as she moved, presuming to indicate her location. "Greetings, my wonderful mentor!" She chirped, vocals laced with slight sarcasm, "Cheer up, Lionheart, let's have a great day of training." She insisted, he seems kind of sad. But what do I know?[break][break]
Cardinalpaw desired to settle by the ledge, struggling to remain at Lionheart's flank. Thankfully, she remained where she was, awaiting Lionheart to begin instruction. She was a phenomenal listener and took action quickly. She didn't always perfect things first attempt, but she comprehended and bore information with ease. As if nature conducted from the evergreens, the creek was a piece of music to the eyes, a symphony of greens to soothe heart and soul. She was obsessing over nature amidst her, although her concentration was fixed on Lionheart. She typically paid attention to the moving, living creatures among her rather than her physical surroundings. The personality and thoughts of others were much more intriguing to the mademoiselle, olive-green visage warm with intensity. White water weaves flowing threads within the stream amid rocks crowned in verdant moss. She desired to view the headwater, flicking her illuminated gaze in the direction of the water, "Tell me, Lionheart; what's the largest prey here in GorgeClan?" She inquired, presuming he should be asking questions or commanding her. She didn't honestly care, persistent with queries when they popped into her brain.[break][break]

Lionheart had been so wrapped up in his thoughts that he had totally missed the approach of his apprentice. He was so distracted that he didn't even notice her until after he had approached her and sat himself down. Feeling a bit embarrassed by this, he avoids looking at the young apprentice. He even goes as far as ignoring her comment about cheering up, avoiding any future questions about what could be on his mind. He was in no mood to share his family history right now. They had more pressing matters to focus on this day that involved hunting.
"The largest prey? " The tom thought on this question for a moment. Many of the larger animals he had heard of were predatory in nature or animals they needed to avoid. Things like foxes or raccoons came to mind there. But prey animals? "Rabbits, the occasional fat squirrel. Some of the feathered pests can be large, in the event you can get them." Yellow eyes turn to glare at the thrush still strutting his stuff on the branches above them. "I think large and I think the animals we need to avoid, not try to eat. Foxes, raccoons, hawks. While the prey we catch are usually no bigger than yourself, if that." He says thoughtfully to her question.
"Many of these types of prey like to gather just ahead of us there, at the stream. It's a common place for animals to catch a drink and the perfect place to hone in on your hunting skills." The tom meowed, motioning to the stream that was well ahead of them on the trail. "I am going to stay back so I do not frighten anything. I want you to sneak ahead and try to catch an animal off-guard as it's attention is on the water. Any kind of prey you want, just try not to be seen."

When Cardinalpaw approached, she realized Lionheart hadn't necessarily recognized her arrival, a quiet snicker escaping her mandibles. Unsurprisingly, something so simple had amused her, as she enjoyed seeing other individuals in disarray or merely in their thoughts. It didn't take too long for her mentor to notice, with evident embarrassment registered in his intense gaze rather than his countenance. Not only that, but the way he averted his visage from meeting hers, she knew the bachelor must've been discomfited. Cardinalpaw was slightly disappointed that he hadn't responded to her comments; taken aback, she went silent for a few moments before she pished her inquiry onto him in hopes of a reply. When he spoke up, Cardinalpaw's visage lightened, glimmering with inquisitiveness, "Rabbits, huh? And fat squirrels? That's nice to know. Thank you." The apprentice gazed toward the cerulean abysm overhead, not a single cloud encompassing the sky. She was pleased with the weather, feeling as though today's prey would be meandering around, searching for nourishment. Her olive-green gaze followed Lionheart's, observing the thrush with suspicious eyes. He thinks he is so special, doesn't he? Fixating her focus on her mentor, she nodded, intaking the knowledge he conveyed.[break][break]
"I guess that would've been a better question; what to avoid." A sheepish chuckle slipped from her maw, blinking in thought. "Raccoons are dangerous? Aren't they around our size?" She questioned, shaking her crania in disbelief, "Honestly, you can ignore that question." When the tomcat began forming more extensive sentences, she was easily more indulged in his lesson. "Okay, I will try." She murmured, silencing herself as she advanced in a low creep, abdomen nearly touching the terra firma. She first noticed a plump mouse, a tiny target, when she ambulated forward. Erroneously, she rustled the grass a bit, producing a slight noise that had caused the mouse to scatter. She attempted to launch herself toward the rodent, paw catching its tail. The creature shrieked from being startled, and she slammed a paw down onto its small frame, crushing it beneath her. "Do you think it's dead?" She questioned, flicking her crania back at Lionheart with squinted eyes, I don't think I'm very good at this.[break][break]

The large tom nods his head in reply to the young she-cat as she thanks him for his answer. Most of the prey they caught were of the furry variety out here in the forest but it wasn't uncommon to catch the feathered pests of the woods too. So she had many options to choose from when going on hunts. Many cats found they did better with certain prey as well, his big body more suited to grabbing the prey that wasn't as quick. While her lithe frame would probably help her in catching something with more agile moves. It all was a matter of figuring out her strengths with hunting lessons so she could hone in on what she was better at and what needed work.
"Ah. I suppose that would be the better question. But yes. Raccoons can prove to be vicious if you don't know what you're doing. Many stay around our size but there are many who get big and fat. They've got teeth and claws to use just like we do." He meows in reply to the light-colored apprentice. While he hadn't tussled with a raccoon himself, he had heard some pretty crazy stories about other cats crossing their path. They were unpredictable scavengers who had a nose for sniffing out unattended prey. They could be a real pest for the clans if they were not kept in check sometimes.
The she-cat then goes on to make an attempt at hunting down prey ahead. The tom watches her ever move intently, wanting to see where her form may need some help. Keeping your belly from hitting anything on the ground was a big part of hunting and this she-cat demonstrated it very well. That is until she accidently brushed a small cluster of grass, making the slightest bit of noise. The mouse she had been stalking immediately alerted to the sound, taking off away from her. The apprentice then lunges after it somehow managing to snag it's tail just as it tries to duck away from her. There is a loud alarm from the caught mouse as she slams her paw onto the small creature, crushing it. Lionheart stared for a moment, the whole scene very impressive. She was so quick that she had managed to snag it's thin tail before it ever got away.
"I do not think he'll be getting up anytime soon." The tom meowed, approaching her with a proud smirk. "You were very quick. It was actually impressive how you managed to snag it's tail like that, especially with it being such a small target. You did very well but we'll have to go further up stream if you'd like to keep trying. That mouse alerted everything nearby to us being here."
"And honestly, the only mistake you made was brushing that bit of grass with your fur. That's a mistake everyone has made, I assure you. But I've never seen anyone make a comeback by snagging a mouse's tail like that. You did good Cardinalpaw."
