ALL HAIL THE UNDERDOGS, IT'S OUR TIME TO MAKE A MOVE
EMBERPAW
7 MOONS ∙ SHE-CAT ∙ GORGE KIT
[attr="class","greentabletext"]One thing that she did not understand was how exactly any cat could sleep after an eventful day. So many things happening all in one day, your mind buzzing constantly, how did anyone just go to their nest and lay down? Cause she sure as heck had not that night.
Ember, her siblings, their denmates, she was sure that all of them could sense that something had been off. Mother and Icefang were both out of the Nursery, some of the older cats were more active than normal, and even that cranky lady Ebonyheart had been out and about. She knew something big was gonna be happening, and she was so ready for it. When Whitestar’s voice called out to the clan from the middle of camp, Emberkit had been one of the first to charge out of the Nursery, energetic green eyes set on being one of the first to get to the bottom of the Tangled Roots. But a pair of jaws grabbed onto her scruff before she could get far. She whipped around, at first thinking it was one of her brothers, or maybe Cardinal, that had tried to stop her from getting a head start. But no, it was mother. Foxfire shook her head at the orange tabby, and the rambunctious kit frowned dramatically, but did as she was indirectly told, plopping her butt down at Foxfire’s feet.
She waited sort of patiently as the clan meeting was held, excited that she was finally a part of her very first clan meeting. It took forever to get to the best part, since there was all that Deputy business, and some Apprentices becoming Warriors. Admittedly, her attention did catch towards the end of that bit, as one of her most frequent kit-sitters was one of the ones being promoted. She watched excitedly as Wisteriapaw stepped forward and received her new name, and Emberkit was one of the very first to start loudly shouting ‘Wisteriabloom’.
But as the white she-cat stepped away, Emberkit’s paws began to tap at the ground in anticipation, just knowing what was coming. When Whitestar’s eyes, or eye she guessed, turned to them and he said their names, it took every ounce of power in her body not to charge forward. But mother had already specifically told her to tone it down, for the ceremony at least. She trotted forward as least jumpy as she could, but her tail lashed wildly around her, betraying her emotions. She sat practically shaking in front of the Tangled Roots, staring up at the Leader and waiting.
Of course she said ‘I do’ in a very excited voice, but made sure not to yell; the last thing she needed was scolded right after becoming an Apprentice. And then her name was called. Emberpaw!! She was an Apprentice! She listened intently to his next words as he called her new mentor forward. Spiderbite? She didn’t recognize that name? She turned her head, confused for a second, but as the black tom walked forward, a little bit of recognition clicked in. She had seen him around camp plenty of times. Maybe she had ran through his legs once or twice like she had done to a lot of Warriors? She couldn’t remember. But she waited for Whitestar to finish his piece before she jumped to her feet, turning to face her new mentor with bright eyes. She shoved her head upwards, touching her nose to his quickly before she took a butt-wiggly step backwards. The two sat together for the rest of the meeting, and she watched as her siblings got their names and mentors too, of course of which she cheered their names dramatically when they were called. What even was embarrassment, anyway?
That night she had bounced around, helping to gather what supplies she could for her new nest in the Apprentice’s den. But when she flopped over into it, her mind was still going a mile a minute. How was she supposed to sleep after all of that?! A new Deputy, a bunch of new Warriors and Apprentices, and something that was apparently a new rank? She tossed and turned in her nest, at one point feeling an irritated kick at the side, probably from Todpaw. Eventually she did end up dozing off, thinking of all the places she would get to see.
But the next morning that energy came flooding right back the moment she woke up. She leapt up out of her nest as soon as the blurriness faded from her eyes and she jumped out and into the camp. The sun was already beginning to rise, so it wasn’t quite dawn anymore and cats were already up and getting their mornings started. Rather than run straight to the kill-pile for some breakfast, the first place that she ran to was actually the Nursery, or rather near the Nursery. Rather than return to the Warriors den, mother had actually spent the night in a little crevice between the Nursery and the tree that the Elder’s den was beneath. She probably didn’t want to go back to the other den cause that meant that Driftshade was there, which she totally didn’t blame her for. Foxfire wasn’t asleep, but she was still laying in the little shaded corner, apparently choosing not to come out just yet. Emberpaw came to a stop in front of her mother with a big toothy grin.
“Mom! I think Spiderbite is gonna show me round the territory for the next couple days! If he takes me huntin’ I swear to bring back the biggest and fattest squirrel I can find for ya, ok?! I love you!” As she got to the last part, she jumped up and gave the scarred crimson molly a quick lick on the forehead before she flipped around and ran off, almost immediately spotting a familiar face in the distance. She ran straight towards her new mentor, jumping up and passed him, turning on her paws as she landed to face him in a playful crouch.
“We’re goin’ out to explore, right?! What’re we waitin’ for?! Let’s go!”She jumped up again, turning heels and making a few jumps forward towards the path that led down into the gorge. She would have just ran straight down the path, but she stopped right at the top. As much as she wanted to just run, she didn’t exactly know where she was going. Not that she wasn’t willing to go exploring on her own. But she didn’t know if he was gonna show her the whole gorge, or the forest, or the borders, or the landmarks, or the best hunting places, or places she shouldn’t go, or….well, she didn’t know where to go first.
