As of this morning, her second deputy had stepped down from their position. Cloverstar had known Silverfrost had no desire to remain her deputy until his death, but things had been going so smoothly with their partnership that she was surprised to find she felt more inconvenienced than she should by his departure from deputy. At least he'd done it in the morning, giving her plenty of time before moonhigh to make a decision. She'd already given it a little thought before this, knowing it was something that could happen at any time, but still felt she hadn't examined all possible choices to the best of her ability.
She'd taken a meal from the fresh-kill pile and returned to her den with it, knowing this would probably take awhile. This would be so much easier if she didn't need to choose a deputy at all. She entertained the notion for a few moments before discarding the thought; having been deputy for a few seasons before becoming leader, she knew it would be more work than it was worth to juggle both her responsibilities as leader and the duties of a deputy. Far be it from her to attempt to destroy part of the hierarchical structure the Clans depended upon, tempting as the thought of total unchallenged dominance was.
Cloverstar considered several cats over the hours that followed, finding herself in an argument with the nine lives in her head more often than not. Appointing Crowstalker would be easy - he would listen to her without falter, and would probably never challenge her leadership in any way. But he'd been her apprentice, and she spent time with him regularly - how would that look to others? And did she want a deputy that was so like her in manner? She wondered about Bluecloud for some time, but he was aging, and she suspected he wouldn't want the position anyway. She dismissed many cats for good, solid reasons - too old, too young, too outspoken, aggressive, radical - but dismissed just as many for superficial ones as well - talks too loudly, there's always burrs in their fur, they caught greencough last leafbare, swims worse than a blind rat.
Am I too obsessive? she wondered, after struggling to pinpoint the exact traits she wanted in a deputy for much too long. Was she overthinking this because already two of her deputies had given up their positions? No. I strive to find the best solution, and I accept nothing less. That just makes me a great leader. Quite self-assured now, she continued to analyze the few candidates she hadn't yet eliminated, until only one remained.
Finally, as moonhigh approached, she emerged from her den and turned immediately to climb the path that led to the Lichen Ledge. The MistClan cats eating dinner looked up with mild surprise and interest, reminding her that they wouldn't know Silverfrost had stepped down - she supposed that was one advantage of the situation, the lack of anxious and whispering Clanmates that led to the appointment of a new deputy after the predecessor's death.
"All cats who hunt among the mist, gather here beneath the Lichen Ledge!" she called. Cats began to slip from their dens, joining those already gathered, and she waited a few minutes as they settled themselves with whispers and curious looks at their surroundings, as though looking for a waiting kit or apprentice.
"This morning, Silverfrost resigned from his position as deputy," Cloverstar began, not bothering to beat around the bush. "I am sincerely grateful for the moons of service he gave to MistClan as its first deputy." She dipped her head toward the silver tabby warrior in respect. "So now the time has come to appoint a new deputy." She wanted to go on - mention how she'd given great thought to her decision, and felt confident in this warrior's abilities, but she held herself back. She was curious to see how her new deputy would handle this. Despite the relative success of MistClan uniting cats of former Clans to see each other as Clanmates, she knew there were some that still had their reservations and may not feel quite happy with following the orders of another former RainClan cat, or one still quite young.
Besides, she had no reason to justify her decision at all. The Clan leader's word is law... the best part of the warrior code.
"I say these words before StarClan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy of MistClan is Koisplash," she announced, her gaze landing on the pretty calico warrior. In many ways, she reminded Cloverstar of her first deputy, Dapplefire. Both cats were passionate, energetic, social, and charming, all traits that Cloverstar valued because she lacked them. Why waste time improving traits she wasn't ever going to need if her deputy could fill in for her? And Koisplash had something Dapplefire had never possessed - ambition. At least, that was the way Cloverstar saw it. Why else would she just happen to impress her with her best qualities each time she spent time with her? An ambitious cat didn't give up their position - that's what Cloverstar was counting on.
