If he isn't dead, I'll kill him myself. Roachflight kept pace with Ghostshadow and Mothlight at first, but his anger gave him speed, put fury in his blood and let each footfall hit hard as if the very ground itself needed to be punished. A twig snapped under Roachflight's heavy trod, and he dialed back his temper with a low hiss. He wasn't going to be the idiot who got their search party killed, not when they were already looking for his waste-of-space brother.
"Spiderbite! SPIDERBITE!"
His last glimpse of Spiderbite before the world fell apart was of the skittish tom muttering something about trying to find Blackstag - and then disappearing, as chaos parted them like flood over dry earth. Roachflight's relationship with his brother was complicated, at best. Tragic, at worst. He had always looked at his older brother with revulsion, disgust at their kinship when his brother had been born without a spine, groveling at the whims of Blackstag. Maybe in his youngest moons, at his angriest, he had wished Spiderbite dead.
But now... He didn't wish him dead. He wished him gone. Out of view so he wouldn't have to look at his face and remember all the reasons why he could never respect him. But not like this. This was uncertainty. This was a tragedy in the making. Roachflight's throat tightened and he swallowed, wanting to scream at the sky and into his brother's stupid face that things weren't supposed to go like this. Spiderbite, you wormbrained idiot. Why couldn't you just think for yourself for once?
Ghostshadow's commentary was lost on Roachflight, the brown-furred tom too angry, to trapped in his own head, to hear anything beyond his own frightened fury.
