[googlefont=Kumar One][googlefont=Roboto] i'll have faith in all you dojust call my name and i'll be thereand oh, i'll be there to comfort youbuild my world ofdreams AROUND YOU crow crowstalker NIGHTCLAN WARRIOR // # MOONS [attr="class","crowbody"]It had been an hour or so since nightfall had graced NightClan's presence with its beautiful darkness. Most of the clan, who lay dormant and asleep during the day, awoke to the night's graces and activity buzzed around camp. Bringing it to life with the casual pitter patter of life. While many of the clan, went among with their business, going out on patrols and such, a single cat sat poised near the entrance of the apprentice's den. The cat, a medium furred mostly black tom with lime, green eyes, and not at large in stature, sat back and watched the action around him, with little interest. On most days, he would have been out and about doing the same as his clannmates, there as a different objective to tonight's activities. Just a day ago, he had been given an apprentice of his own and that alone had made this more important than leisure activists. No, his former mentor, now leader, Cloverstar, had given him a mission. An objective to train an apprentice, and to turn them into a great warrior. And he would not fail her and he would make sure of that! Narrowing his green orbs, into slits, he rounded his attention back towards the apprentice's den. He had given the apprentice enough time to sleep. It was time to move on to the night's training, while the moon hung high and bright in the sky. Taking a breath from his nose, the tom, turned and slipped effortlessly into the den's entrance. His eyes adjusted fairly easily to the darkness of the den, and he turned his head around, to take in the various, still sleeping forms around him. Most, he mused to himself, probably had their own mentors who would come and arise them from their slumbers. He would not be the one to disturb them, especially when their training was of no concern to him. A few head moves to the left and than to the right, he found the familiar dusty black pelt, he had been searching for. He paddled forward then, careful and precise in his steps to make sure he wasn't stepping on anyone's tail. A small fox lengths and no yowling screams later, he was hovering over his apprentice. Even this close to her, it was hard for the tom to really come to the terms, that for the next several moons, he would be responsible for such a young life. It was almost scary to think about. But Cloverstar had her trust him, and that alone was enough to push such thoughts from his mind. Bringing up a large paw, and nudged the she-cat's side gently. Enough to hopefully arise her out of her sleep, but not enough to hurt her. No, this was one of Cloverstar's precious kits, and hurting her was certainly not something he wanted to do. But going easy on her, was something that he refused to do as well. He would make her great! But first, things came first. He had to wake her up. " Berrypaw" He mewed as gently as he could muster, though it sounded strange flowing from his maw. Something said so gently and sweetly, was not something he was accustomed too. Still. " "Hey, wake up, its time for training"" Another nudge and with a flick of his tail, he awaited to see if this tactic would work. If it didn't? Well he had another idea just in case. But it was best to try this method first before going into more drastic things. "Crowstalker talking." [googlefont=Kumar One][googlefont=Roboto] acting on your best behaviorturn your back on mother natureeverybody wants toRULE THE world berry berrypaw NIGHTCLAN APPRENTICE // 6 MOONS [attr="class","berrybody"]Berrykit was a light sleeper, even cradled in her mother's fur, Cloverstar’s scent wreathed around her, she never failed to wake with only the softest coaxing. Berrypaw the apprentice had even less reason to sleep deeply. Here in this den with scents that were not her mother's, their nests brushing against hers and her sisters', Berrypaw did not feel at home.
She felt displaced. Though for all the world, being an apprentice was what she wanted. Now, she had a voice that must be listened to, and she could better remind others of their role in the Clan her mother led so effortlessly. But the desire to flourish under her mother's watchful eye was at war with the desire to stay close.
To stay small and dependent forever. But wouldn't Cloverstar love her more, if she grew into an excellent warrior? Berrypaw felt no shame over such selfish motivations. Regardless of what the Code said, everyone acted with their best interests at heart.
Like Crowstalker, the all-black shape in the gloom of the apprentice's den when Berrypaw awakened. He's going to train me because Mother made it his job to. And he's going to do it well because he doesn't want to disappoint her. To lose value. He doesn't really care about MY success.
This didn't bother her in the slightest. They were both working towards their own goals, and Berrypaw could respect a cat wise enough to try improving their station. Complacency was for idiots.
"What are we doing first, Crowstalker?" Berrypaw asked, exercising a soft, largely benign demeanor. Speaking of best interests… "May I eat before we go?" There was no way she could perform at her best on an empty stomach.
Kits didn't ignore hunger, didn't have to conserve their energy. Only a day out of the nursery, she was still used to such indulgence. He couldn't honestly expect her to start the night off without food, right? If he did, well...she might have to try to sneak something while they're out. Berrypaw's dark featured face was aimed at her mentor, her expression soft to hide the bright, blue-eyed scrutiny that came so naturally to her.

Wide blue eyes glued too him, patiently awaiting an answer to her questions. The dark tom, twitched an ear simply. An acknowledgement that he had indeed heard her. He paused, however in his answering. It was a good question, he noted, softly to himself. What would Cloverstar do? He shook his head, pushing such a question from his mind. He didn't need any distractions for the moment, " Yes, go and eat first." He turned and paddled away towards the entrance. Only to briefly stop upon closing in, moving to tilting his head back in her direction. " You'll need your strength to hunt. After you're done, meet me at the camp's entrance. Don't take too long." His tone was simple, blunt and almost soft. To the point, the tom who had noticed the slight change in his tone, let out a small sniff of distain at his own weakness. Cloverstar. She had been his purpose, his very life, since as far as he could recall. He had been hopelessly obsessed with the very notion of her. Power. To him, she was this and so so much more! And now, she had kits and one of them, he was the mentor of. A seeping edge of sick satisfaction crossed into those gleaming lime, eyes of his. He stared at his apprentice more and realized, something he had known from the very beginning, since he was given this apprentice to mentor. This molly, was just a means to an end. To get closer to his mentor. To build the ever growing dedication and loyalty towards her. Nothing, more and nothing less. Of course, he would pretend to care for her, groom her, and do whatever he could to make her a warrior, worthy of praise. He would make her great! But firsts things, came first. A steady pace to make sure that the kit could actually be of some worth too him. " If there are no questions." He turned away from her, giving her his back, and paddled towards the den's entrance. Not even bothering to see if she even had any questions. He paused briefly once more, before " I'll be waiting for you at the entrance." With that he disappeared back out into the depths of camp. To await his apprentice's hopefully fast arrival. "Crowstalker talking." [googlefont=Kumar One][googlefont=Roboto] acting on your best behaviorturn your back on mother natureeverybody wants toRULE THE world berry berrypaw NIGHTCLAN APPRENTICE // # MOONS [attr="class","berrybody"]Berrypaw's eyes narrowed as Crowstalker gave her his back, walking to the entrance with the calm authority of someone in charge. It was expected that someone her mother had personally trained would have some of Cloverstar's grace, but Berrypaw felt her interest pique at how quickly he left without allowing room for questions. He only assumed she did not have any. That he assumed correctly didn't matter, she was slowly learning that Crowstalker was not a teacher who lingered around for idle chatter. We are not friends. He was a source of knowledge, and herself a vessel to be filled.
She chose a shrew from the pile, finding a quiet place from the riffraff to have her breakfast. There was no ceremony, no prayer of thanks. She merely used small paws to pin an even smaller body down, so that she could bite through the dense gray-brown fur to get to the meat inside.
She did not hurry. She did not drag out the time, either. An actual interest in what Crowstalker had to teach urged her away from the bone scraps, still licking her lips.
"Berrypaw," said a she-cat she hadn't bothered to learn the name of. "You're not a kit anymore. Bury your prey bones outside, like the rest of us."
Petulance flared in the kitten's eyes, and she considered walking off in bold-faced disregard for anyone that wasn't her mother, but instead… she put on a winsome smile. "Oh you're right! How silly of me! I'll do that right away."
Feigning obsequiousness, she scooped up the carcass in her teeth and trotted to the entrance. No sooner setting paw outside, she looked surreptitiously around the cavemouth - then deposited the after-meal mess into nearby bushes. Someone else could clean that up.
Giving her pelt a light shake, Berrypaw primly licked a paw and ran it over her whiskers and mouth, tidying up her petite, short-furred features. Now she was ready. Seeking out Crowstalker by sight more than scent (a skill she had not yet honed), Berrypaw approached.

[googlefont=Kumar One][googlefont=Roboto] i'll have faith in all you dojust call my name and i'll be thereand oh, i'll be there to comfort youbuild my world ofdreams AROUND YOU crow crowstalker NIGHTCLAN WARRIOR // 22 MOONS [attr="class","crowbody"]Patience had never been much of a strong suit for Crowstalker. Even as a kit he had been prone to having small outbursts when it came to having to wait for long periods of time. Thankfully becoming a warrior and an adult had dulled some of the common notion of tapping his tail and blowing out huffs of air from his maw. Unfortunately becoming a warrior hadn't dulled down all of the uncommon traits of kithood. But a few calming breaths and reminders that this was the best thing that had ever happened to him was enough to bring some sense to him. Some not all. Nostrils flared and ears ticked in union as his apprentice finally approached him. Her scent, far from Cloverstar's, bathing over the tom's tongue. He let out a small sniff, reaching up with a fluffy black paw to swipe at his nose slightly, before leveling the molly off with a stare. The urge to say something about keeping him waiting, had come to mind. In fact, the small rolling of words, moved to slip off his tongue, like a coiling adder ready to strike. He silenced these hissing words with a snap of his maw and instead gave a small nod, an acknowledgement of her arrival. " We will be jumping straight into hunting today. You'll get a chance to see the rest of the territory another day." He mewed evenly, with a flick of his tail, while he sized her up with a quick scan of his amber eyes. " But for today, I want to see how you handle yourself outside of camp. Up into recently, you've been a kit, stuck in camp with nothing that could help hone in your skills. Even as Cloverstar's kit, I expect great things from you. Hopefully you won't disappoint me...now come, we have hunting to do...." With that said, the tom turned and made his way out of the entrance. He was met with the strong scent of pine as he emerged, and the soft swish of wind against his pelt. He paddled away from the opening, feeling the soft cool grass beath his paws. He turned only once to make sure his apprentice was following him before he began to move again. With his own knowledge of the territory, he moved away from areas that would take him towards PineNeedle Clearing , Branch Trial and the Black Woods. He knew that he was making a hasty destination with this hunting route in mind, but was more about testing his apprentice than anything else. Cloverstar, would thank him for this later. After some time of walking, eventually the hunting destination would come looming nearby. The large blackened cave, stood dark and haunting out in front of the two, and to most cats it would have appeared intimating. To Crowstalker however, it was just a means to an end to teach. He looked to Berrypaw, and let a small, knowing grin sweep to his maw. "" Welcome to Bat Cave, Berrypaw. This is where we'll be hunting today." "Crowstalker talking." [googlefont=Kumar One][googlefont=Roboto] acting on your best behaviorturn your back on mother natureeverybody wants toRULE THE world berry berrypaw NIGHTCLAN APPRENTICE // 6 MOONS [attr="class","berrybody"]Something could be said for Crowstalker's directiveness. Berrypaw's ears flicked to show that she was listening, and she was careful to fix a look of kittenish obsequiousness onto her face at all times, while her mind carried on creating its thorned thoughts. Hopefully you won't disappoint me, he said, as if threatening her with disappointment was somehow going to earn her favor and diligence; she almost idly retorted with a hopefully you won't disappoint my mother, but, like a delicate beetle between her jaws, carefully let it go.
Keeping up with Crowstalker was proving to be something of a chore, and the harsh reality of two things hit her at once; one: the world was very large. And two: she was born of warriors but she wasn't a warrior herself, she was soft and vulnerable, with the only exception being the tiny needle sharp claws hiding in her paws and her pearly white teeth. Berrypaw all too clearly recalled that clumsy oaf stepping on her before, fully aware of how much that had hurt. How easily something could snap her bones.
I will get stronger, one side promised. But I want to stay my mother's pride and joy forever, warred another. Distracted by this internal conflict, she looked up to see the mouth of an enormous cave, and a cold drafty wind billowed out of the black mouth that was the entrance. Her fur raised slightly, and she had to stifle a frown. This is the bat cave, he'd called it. Berrypaw sniffed the air tentatively, idly wondering how he expected her to catch something that flew. She'd seen a dead bat on the fresh kill pile before. The elders swore that the clung to the ceiling of caves - so how in StarClan's name was she meant to snag one? Berrypaw narrowed her eyes at the back of Crowstalker's head. Of course he'd give me a difficult challenge to start off with. Not to mention he was temporarily denying her a chance to look at their territory. At the land her mother reigned over. He was narrowing her world without her saying so, and she resented him for it.
But no small part of the kitten standing in his shadow was immune to the pull of a good challenge. [attr="class","btag"]tagged Katara | | [attr="class","bnotes"]notes Finished |
