Well, that happened.
She'd been chasing a fledgling hawk of some sort up the side of the cliff face, claws digging into whatever crevice she could find. Normally, she watched them first, but this one had forced her to jump before she was ready, and now she either saw this through to the end or went home empty pawed. And that would be a shame. Her mother would tell her to try harder tomorrow, but she wasn't so sure if the others would be as forgiving. What sort of Prey-hunter couldn't catch a single piece of prey. Since the quaking prey was really paranoid, she'd noticed, and so they didn't come as far anymore. She'd been told they would come again when they had time to resettle, but that meant her hunting techniques weren't as good.
Maybe she should have thought more about who would look for her and who would worry before she'd done this. Gone without anyone else, further than she'd ever gone before. But the fledgling was fat, and she wanted its feathers. Mother would love those feathers and so she would have them.
Dream finally got close enough and took a flying pounce at the fledgling, expecting to sink claws and teeth into it and end it quickly and without pain. It couldn't fly so it should have been simple. Except she missed her target and found herself over nothing but air, suspended there for a moment before screaming as she plummeted and rolled down the cliff face. "YOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLL!!!"
This wasn't embarrassing at all, noooooo.
She wasn't scared really, this was more like an adventure. If not for the small rocks hitting her as she rolled down the hill this would be fun. Instead she was launched a second time and landed in a slow running stream. Deep enough to break her fall and stop her momentum without getting hurt. The she-cat could only scoot herself to the water's edge and laugh.
"I guess he didn't want to be food today. I'll get your feathers another day, I swear it!" She laughed at herself for awhile, lying there on the edge of the stream and catching her breath. Dream had the absolute worse luck today. She looked up the cliff she'd just rolled down, then at her bloody paws where she'd tried to stop her fall.
First the paws. She rested them in the water and cleaned them delicately, sitting pretty there and listening for any sound that would tell her where she was and which way was home. Which way that didn't include climbing back up the way she'd come.
"I'm going to be in trou-ble." She sang to herself. If her mother didn't kill her, and the cave-guards didn't kill her, then she'd probably hear it from Skyteller for the state of her paws. She sighed. What a mess.
It was only then that she realized that her 'slow moving' stream had actually moved much more than she thought, and that by the time she'd paddled to the side she was much further than she wanted to be. The cliff wasn't straight up from where she sat. She could go the way the Clans took to get back home, but that was a long trip and she was already tired and sore. Perhaps tomorrow, if they didn't send a search party today. She could go back, she should go back, but what would the fun be in that?
