Crowface's grass-colored eyes opened before dawn. She squinted at the warriors nestled around her in the warm warren. Yawning until her tongue curled between her sharp fangs, Crowface stretched like a snake out of her nest and slipped toward the exit. It was common for her to leave in pre-dawn for her own benefit, for she trained her body as if she was an apprentice still. To her, improving one's body was a never-ending process; the moment a cat thought they reached their plateau and stopped seeking greater heights, they'd die from their own complacence. Next leafbare, Crowface would reach sixty moons, middle age for a feral molly out in this wilderness. Now more than ever did she need to stay on her toes, lest she become weak and frail as she aged. She refused to retire to the elder's den; she would die as a warrior. Yet, for all her moons, she couldn't say she expected this day to come. She finally had an apprentice.
She remembered the ceremony when she was more than five lopes away from LightningClan's camp, and she forced herself to turn back and collect him. Crowface sucked her tongue in annoyance. Pausing at the apprentice's entryway, she nearly shouted into the depths, but she had no inclination of using his name until the tom showed promise. Besides, she did not want to wait until he decided to rouse himself to her summons. No, she would collect him and drag him outside. He would have to get used to this time of day as well as Crowface's strict regimen for herself (which now extended to him, too).
Crowface bent her ears as she slipped through the warrens until it opened up to the collection of apprentices curled up. Her green eyes flashed at the sheer amount of them--twelve!--and even Crowface felt slightly overwhelmed as she tried picking hers out of the lot. She suddenly screwed up her face, sucked in a breath, and unleashed a vicious caterwaul of a drill sergeant calling her apprentice to attention.
"BOY!" she bellowed. "THE ENEMY IS UPON US." She finally spotted his huge paws splayed up and she stepped on Ravenpaw and Cloudpaw on her way to swat Daringpaw repeatedly into consciousness. "Do you think our foes will wait until you're awake before they attack! Get your ass up now, rabbit-food!" Crowface ignored the half-awake complaints and wide eyes of the other apprentices suffering at Daringpaw's expense. If the ginger knew what was good for him, he'd learn to sleep by the entryway or learn to wake up at this time every day from now on.
