YumaAPPEARANCE
With a beautiful NightClan perma-queen as her mother, it was no one's surprise that Cloverstar turned out just as pretty as her. She's practically a shadow of her, a near-identical copy that's haunting for those who once knew Goldensky. Cloverstar has the same slender, lithe form, and they share the same wavy pattern of the black markings that ripple through their brown fur. Though Cloverstar's brown is a few shades darker than Goldensky's, the resemblance is overall uncanny. Cloverstar also inherited her mother's entrancing green eyes, and the similarities finally end here. The she-cat has a single, thick scar that parts the fur on her left shoulder that nobody but her knows the origin to.

To explain Cloverstar, it's best to start at her beginning. Cloverkit was raised by the other queens in the nursery and she was affected quite a bit by the experience, not that she has any idea. She was a highly attention-seeking kit, forever seeking the devotion of a mother she should've had, and (in her eyes) never receiving the kind of praise for her antics that she felt she was owed. Petulant, rude, and having a wicked sense of humor were annoying traits at best within a kit, so the queens were certain she'd shake off the personality once she matured into a young she-cat. However, when she became an apprentice, little changed except the breadth of her influence. Her mentor, a younger warrior who was unfortunate enough to have taken on Cloverpaw as his first apprentice, was often a victim of her cruel sense of humor. She seemed to enjoy making him nervous, and constantly undermined his authority by doing whatever she pleased, and proceeding to be the picture of innocence when he later tried to discipline her, essentially gaslighting him nonstop.
All this came to a halt for seemingly no reason in particular, a change that occurred overnight in the eyes of her mentor. She seemed to decide in a moment she was finished with the mind games she'd been playing all her life, and became the charming she-cat everyone expected she should be. It was like some terrible, evil thing had come out of her and left for good, and now she was just Goldensky's beautiful daughter: likable, social, and friendly with most everyone. She worked hard and she worked well, and listened to all cats older than her, and made fast friends with her fellow apprentices she'd once been so reluctant to acknowledge. She became especially skilled with fighting, though her mentor would sometimes see a glint in her eye so similar to the old Cloverpaw that he felt for a second nearly afraid of her. But it would pass in a moment when she would pause and ask if he was alright, and if they could work on a particular move a little more before moving on.
After Cloverpaw became Clovermask, she remained much the same to her Clanmates, though there have been instances when she appears to be bored and says or does something to purposefully trigger an incredulous response, and those are the moments where she betrays herself as not having changed one bit on the inside. Deep down, Clovermask is cold and calculating, and there's a part of her that enjoys causing others pain, not for the sake of violence but because it makes her feel something. Part of her is still that petulant kit thirsting for the attention of others, and willing to do anything to have it. But this is a part of herself she has buried so deeply she's nearly forgotten about it most days. As a young warrior, she often felt frustrated and restless, mind-numbingly bored with the tedium of Clan life and failing to find a point to it.
Although her Clanmates appear to like her well enough, there isn't a single cat in the Clan that would call her a friend. Clovermask unintentionally keeps herself more detached from her Clanmates than she realizes, apparently convinced her imitations at normal behavior are quite enough. She sees them more as objects than actual individuals with stories and feelings, and doesn't bother with making any of her interactions truly genuine. She feigns interest well enough, but if you were to ask any cat who's chatted with her, they wouldn't say they thought the she-cat was particularly invested in what they were saying. There's always an underlying impression that she has something else on her mind, or that the true purpose of the interaction is something beyond simply wanting to socialize. And that's the strange thing about the way Clovermask interacts with others: it's with purpose, but you don't get to know the purpose. In reality, she simply has it set in her head which cats she's going to chat with for the evening, and anyone else she speaks with is a bonus; it's all to make her appear as if she cares about her Clanmates' lives, and making sure she chats with them all over the course of a moon at least once is her way of achieving that. She's well-aware you can only rise through the ranks if you're well-liked or well-known and she's going for both.
Clovermask's Achilles' Heel lies within her highly obsessive personality, which can be dangerous for both herself and others. For the most part, Clovermask isn't interested in her Clanmates or their affairs, but she has made powerful attachments before, and it has the potential to be her greatest downfall. While she is, for the most part, very calm and collected in demeanor for being a literal psychopath, it's because she feels largely detached from others and doesn't feel anything in regard to them. The few instances she has felt anything for anyone have mostly been malicious, except for the one time it wasn't. When she met Shrikesong, everything changed for her, and to this day she doesn't quite realize how blindly devoted she was and still is for the she-cat. What Clovermask doesn't quite understand, and will never accept, is that she will never be over her obsession with Shrikesong, and she would do anything for her attention - which means it's very likely there's a bomb ticking down to their inevitable next encounter. Though she has tried her very best to shift her obsession from the TreeClan warrior to her Clan and its success, she's only just managed to distract herself.
But that doesn't mean she isn't obsessed with the idea of being a leader. Despite this being her top goal, she doesn't have any specific plans for the event she does become a leader; she's simply utterly convinced she'd be far more capable in the role than anyone else, and would make sure NightClan is feared. She's also certain it would garner Shrikesong's attention and admiration, which is her underlying motivation to it all.
After becoming Clan deputy, Clovermask's personality became more cool and calculating than ever as she cracked down on making sure she presents as NightClan's most ideal leader. In contrast to Darkstar's fiery temper, Clovermask was calm, reasonable, and compromising and she made sure these traits were seen to her Clan as the strengths they are. She threw herself into her duties as deputy, and ramped up her interactions with her Clanmates to secure their trust and loyalty. No cat could deny she made an excellent deputy - she was decisive, calm, and always knew what to do in any situation. Still, her intense focus on her duties made her prone to burnout and sleepless days; it was during these times that she'd wander away, restless and uncertain as she stared across the border to TreeClan territory.
Now the new leader of NightClan, Cloverstar is armed with the lives of nine StarClan warriors, and they seem determined to haunt her. Because of this, her leadership has so far been punctuated by unusual feelings toward her Clan and others, which has already prompted her to take positive action where she otherwise wouldn't. StarClan seems determined to make a good cat out of her yet, but it remains to be seen whether Cloverstar will submit.

-- birth.
Goldensky was a she-cat who had been a queen pretty much ever since she became a warrior. She was someone who believed a beautiful, healthy she-cat like her had a duty to bring strong kits into the Clan. She wanted to breed only, not believing in keeping a mate, and she made sure the toms she mated with were well-aware of that. She brought one healthy litter into the Clan prior to conceiving Cloverkit, and was so far well-respected for her self-chosen role of rearing the Clan's next generation. However, when her second litter was born, everything that could go wrong went wrong. Effected by the drought NightClan was going through, she was weakened significantly and her kits came too early. The affair was bloody and ended in almost utter tragedy. Goldensky died from losing too much blood, and one of the kits was stillborn, while another was too small to survive the night. The third, who was later named Cloverkit, survived.
-- kithood.
With no mother to raise her, Cloverkit was raised primarily by the other queens in the nursery at the time, who naturally owed more attention and devotion to their own kits. Though Cloverkit was hardly neglected, she recognized the difference in the way she was treated versus the queens' true kits, and resented it. As she grew, she became more and more attention-seeking, and would launch any ploy she could think of to either impress or horrify the queens - either reaction was fine to her. She was often downright rude, petulant, and the other kits would complain Cloverkit played cruel tricks on them. Though the queens were inclined to believe their own kits, it was difficult to believe a fairly innocent-looking kit was capable of lining their nests with thorns, or poking holes in their fresh-kill to press insects she'd catch into them. No amount of scolding seemed to work on her, and she never seemed affected by a cuff around the ears either; the kit was fearless, and irrepressible.
-- apprenticeship.
Needless to say, the queens were relieved when Cloverkit was apprenticed, and was no longer their problem. She did not, as they had hoped, 'grow out' of her behavior. Instead, she felt she'd just been given a wider playing ground. Her mentor, a young warrior called Bluecloud, became her main victim. Already young and inexperienced, she was his first apprentice and was nervous to begin with. Cloverpaw seemed to sense this, and decided he was going to be the only authority figure she wouldn't obey. She was the picture of innocence around other warriors, who had no problem issuing orders to her that she'd obey, and Bluecloud was the only one she'd remove the mask around. She constantly undermined his authority, instead doing as she pleased, and it was often she who decided what they'd be doing for the day, while Bluecloud reluctantly went along with it. Disciplining her was impossible, as she often wouldn't complete chores assigned to her unless others were witness to the order, and threats had no effect on her whatsoever. In an act of uncharacteristic aggression, Bluecloud once threw himself at her while she was mocking him, and pinned her to the forest floor. She pretended to be terrified, gasping for breath and pleading tearfully with him, and when he clambered off her, horrified with himself, she immediately burst into laughter. "You should have seen your face!" In that moment, he could tell she'd never been afraid of him for even a second.
Bluecloud began to simply go along with her antics, tired of being gaslit, and Cloverpaw became bored of him when he didn't offer her any satisfactory reactions anymore. It was around this time that she began wandering the borders by herself while most of her Clanmates would be sleeping during the day, and that was when she met Shrikesong of TreeClan. The older she-cat was being challenged by a fox for the plump rabbit she'd just brought down, and it wasn't looking good. She spotted Cloverpaw lurking across the border and called for help. Cloverpaw considered simply watching the bloodbath, and for a moment she enjoyed the feeling of control she felt, knowing the she-cat's life could be hanging in the balance of a single decision Cloverpaw could make right then. But at the last moment, she decided to enter the fight. Her complete lack of fear allowed her to not think twice about launching herself on the fox's back, sinking her claws viciously into its shoulders when it attempted to shake her off. Shrikesong threw herself at its side and clung, and it stumbled at the weight of two cats on top of it, and collapsed clumsily to the ground. Cloverpaw didn't hesitate to rake her claws across the fox's eyes, and was prepared to deal another blow, but the fox was already yelping in agony, and flung with all its strength to release the cats' hold. It fled the scene, leaving the two she-cats winded from their harsh landing. Shrikesong introduced herself to Cloverpaw, and thanked her for saving her life. "You were amazing. I've never heard of an apprentice with enough guts to do something like that." Cloverpaw was surprised by the compliment, drinking it up eagerly, and offered to help her back to her camp, as she was badly injured from a bite on her leg. Shrikesong accepted the help, and she helped her hobble back near enough to her camp that she attracted the attention of her Clanmates. Suspicious of the NightClan apprentice at her side, Shrikesong explained to her Clanmates Cloverpaw had saved her life. A pair of warriors accompanied her back to her territory, and that was that.
It was then that Cloverpaw realized she'd liked being admired and praised more than she liked being feared. She liked Shrikesong had been so impressed by her. She decided she wanted to change, and she wanted it now. The following evening, when Bluecloud met with her for training as usual, she asked him to lead the way to his astonishment. For their entire night of training, she was obedient, polite, and courteous. He was certain it was another trick and remained wary of her, but her good behavior continued for the next moon, and the moon after that. She was considerate, charming, and never made him feel undermined. She thanked him each night for the training session, and went on to share fresh-kill with the elders and ask for stories about their days as warriors. Sometimes she seemed a bit off, but it was only ever because she was struggling to figure out what a likable cat would do, and often had to mimic the behavior of others in order to get the right effect. But it seemed to work. Bluecloud eventually relaxed around her and even began to praise her, which is exactly what she was looking for, and the friends she was making within the apprentices' den helped with that as well. She became a perfect apprentice seemingly overnight and Bluecloud, who'd insisted on postponing her warrior ceremony to the deputy on the grounds she wasn't ready, finally advised that she was more than ready to become a warrior.
-- warriorhood.
When Cloverpaw became Clovermask, she maintained a pseudo-friendship with her former mentor, and continued to seek admiration from her Clanmates. After a couple moons of this though, she started to become bored with it, and could feel her mask slipping as she struggled to pretend she was likable and lovely. She decided to revisit the origin of her change, and slipped out of camp during the day while her Clanmates slept, seeking Shrikesong along the TreeClan border. After a few days of this, she finally came upon her and brightly asked her how she was doing. Shrikesong, taken aback by her friendliness, was more cautious and closed off, knowing their Clans were historically enemies. They recalled the fight with the fox many moons ago, and Shrikesong again praised Clovermask for her fearlessness. The young warrior was beyond pleased, feeling that the TreeClan warrior's praise was even more valuable than any of her other Clanmates'.
After that, Clovermask began to seek her out at Gatherings, eager to attain a level of friendship with the she-cat that she'd seen in others, but Shrikesong didn't think it was appropriate to reciprocate. She was older and more mature than Clovermask, and they were from differing Clans, and felt even being friendly wasn't a good idea. Clovermask, however, continued to persist, and the two she-cats formed an unsteady friendship that the NightClan warrior cherished above all else, seeing Shrikesong almost as a maternal figure she never had. Convinced she had achieved the feat of forming a genuine bond with someone, Clovermask began to imagine she could convince Shrikesong to abandon her Clan to come live with her, despite her own Clan's reputation for being borderline xenophobic. When Shrikesong confessed she was expecting kits, Clovermask thought it was the perfect opportunity, and began to articulate a story for her to give to the NightClan leader of being driven out of the Clan when she became pregnant with a loner's kits. Shrikesong, bewildered, told her that she was bearing the kits of her mate, whom she'd been with for more than a couple of seasons by now. He'd been with her on many of the hunting patrols Clovermask had caught her on, and she had explained her friendship with the NightClan warrior to him as well.
Clovermask immediately distanced herself after learning this, feeling betrayed by the fact Shrikesong had a relationship in her life that meant more to her that her friendship with her. Shrikesong, worried about her, caught her on the border one day a moon later, and her mate was with her. Feeling small and insignificant for the first time in her life in the face of what she perceived to be her greatest rival, Clovermask suddenly struck. She launched herself at the TreeClan warrior, bowling him over and scratching any part of him she could reach. He hesitated to fight back, knowing what she meant to his mate, and hoped she'd tire herself out or would realize her mistake, but that wasn't in Clovermask's nature. Shrikesong acted immediately to get her off of her mate, and finally dealt her a vicious slash on the shoulder when Clovermask wouldn't stop trying to attack her mate. Stunned by the attack, and utterly betrayed, the NightClan she-cat left and visited the medicine den to have her wound treated. She refused to say where it was from.
After that, Clovermask's obsessive behavior with Shrikesong halted entirely, and even when they saw each other at Gatherings, Clovermask pretended she didn't exist. She never bothered Shrikesong or her mate ever again, though she nurses a hatred for him deep down. She acknowledged, internally, that she had to move on from the incident and grow stronger from it. She set herself a new goal instead: to climb the ranks of NightClan, so they can maintain their fearsome reputation under a leader who will not be afraid to give everything to her Clan. At least, that's what she imagines for herself. She has shifted her obsession from Shrikesong to NightClan. Despite this, she's in denial that she hasn't completely moved on from Shrikesong, and her motivation behind everything is often in pursuit of her attention... even if it's only going to be earned seasons from now.
She mentored her first apprentice at thirty moons, and focused first and foremost on shaping him to be a fearsome fighter. She taught him dirty fighting moves, and ways to outsmart cats that weren't necessarily 'noble', but would aide him more than hurt him. Some of her innate brutality rubbed off on him, and when he was made a warrior the pair of them developed a companionship one might liken to genuine friendship, since he may be one of the only cats in the Clan that seems to regularly see glimpses of her true self, and he doesn't mind her true self at all. Clovermask, for her part, doesn't notice, and simply keeps him around because he appears to admire her and she enjoys that.
She has, once or twice, persuaded him into ploys that aide her reputation as a proficient fighter and leader, once having him lure a raccoon out of her nest so Clovermask could steal her kits and have them killed. When Clovermask led a patrol near the raccoon's nest, the mother burst out of her den after recognizing the scent of her kits' murderer, and the she-cat was able to take the lead to have the enraged raccoon dispatched with only minor injuries. It was a huge feat for the entire patrol to emerge without major injuries from a raccoon attack, and the Clan ate well that night while her patrol noted her surprisingly calm head in the face of unexpected danger, to the point they were nearly suspicious she'd been expecting it. Oblivious to this suspicion, in her eyes Clovermask's plan was going well, and she dreamed of becoming deputy, but more for the look on Shrikesong's face when she realized she regretted not joining her in NightClan.
