Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty It was going to be another hot day- the wind that gusted now and then was still cool from the night, and the stones hadn't yet had time to soak up enough heat to burn paws, but by sunhigh most of StoneClan would likely be huddled in camp. For now, though, Smokestorm led a small group toward the Little Woods, intending to take advantage of the cooler morning to get in some training practice. The trees would help provide some shade as well.
Smokestorm spoke as she padded along, glancing back but giving the instruction before reaching the woods, where quiet would be necessary to keep from spooking prey. "Apprentices, I hope you're all alert- your mentors and I thought it would be helpful to have a little competition. You'll hunt, each of you against each other. This isn't a race," she added, hoping to give them a bit of caution. "Take your time. And whoever makes the best catch, there's a reward."
Pausing next to one of the biggest trees in the grove, Smokestorm hopped up on one of the roots and turned to face the mentors and apprentices that had followed, giving a flick of her tail to beckon the warriors to join her. "Should we split them into pairs or each one separate?" she asked Kestrelclaw, Cicadasong and Flickerleaf.

30 Moons StoneClan Tom Kestrelclaw "Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't harm them." -Dalai Lama "Pairs would be a good idea," Kestrelclaw replied. "That way the younger apprentices can learn from the older." The stout sand colored tom was thinking specifically of Goldenpaw, who was a pawful of moons ahead of most of the apprentices present; the tom would be a warrior soon, and Kestrelclaw was keen on the idea of Dawnpaw picking up a thing or two from the senior warrior-to-be. "I'd like Dawnpaw and Goldenpaw to be paired together, if that's alright."
Kestrelclaw flicked an ear towards Honeynose, and then looked to Smokestorm, hoping for their agreement. The apprentices were all clustered together, chattering amongst themselves - well, Poppypaw and Dawnpaw were chatting, Paintedpaw looked unspeakably bored - the excitement in the air a low, steady building thing like a summer storm.
Smokestorm assented, and Kestrelclaw smiled at Honeynose's warm "sure!" before briefly separating himself from the other mentors to have a quick word with his apprentice. A stout tabby tail touched Dawnpaw's flank, catching his attention and herding him from his siblings, speaking once they were a few harelengths away. "You're going to be hunting in the little woods today, and that means you're going to be focusing on different things. It's not as open as the scrublands, and there's more things under paw to alert your prey to your presence - twigs, leaves, that sort of thing - so mind your footing. At least you don't have to worry about raptors this close to the trees."
Kestrelclaw paused, musing over any other potential tidbits of advice the younger tom may need. "Unless you really think you can make the catch, I'd leave any squirrels alone. They're very fast and can climb a tree faster than you can say 'squirreldung', I don't want you to expend all your energy on a touch chase." Kestrelclaw closed his mouth, head cocked ever so slightly. What else... what else...
Suddenly, the stocky warrior smiled and gave Dawnpaw a lick between the ears. "Whatever happens, I'm proud of you. Just do your best and you can't go wrong." Kestrelclaw felt his heart press against his ribs, pride expanding the chambers until he felt warmth flooding through him. Dawnpaw was a very good 'paw, he felt relieved and honored by Hawkstar's decision to entrust Dawnpaw to him.
If there was one thing Honeynose had learned about Goldenpaw over the past few seasons, it was that the tom was very very motivated by food. She'd made sure he'd skipped breakfast this morning, hoping the hunger would drive him to do his best for Smokestorm's hunting competition. The tabby and white she-cat still felt nervous, as if bumblebees were buzzing around inside her chest and paws - but she managed to hide most of her anxieties behind bright eyes and a brighter smile.
"You'll be great!" Honeynose spoke up as soon as Smokestorm had made her announcement. The presence of Goldenpaw's siblings - Sunpaw and Blazepaw - was a little worrisome, but Honeynose was hoping for the best. There's a little sibling rivalry going on, so maybe Goldenpaw will step up to the challenge? Stars, she hoped so. He was one of the oldest apprentices here, and Honeynose's first one. Even Kestrelclaw, twenty moons her junior, had gotten an apprentice before he'd even hit his fourtieth moon. And yet here was Honeynose, one of the last of her siblings to ever have a pupil of her own...
Honeynose gulped. Her problems seemed so small and weak, compared to her friends'. Herondive's sister, Minkfire, had vanished and left a figurative trail of fire in her wake in the form of grieving parents and worried siblings. Hazelcloud's sister, Maplestorm, had had a health scare recently... Everyone had so much more important things to be worried about, and here she was fussing over whether or not she was a good mentor.
Over whether or not Vipertail noticed...
Honeynose gave herself a quick shake, licking one snowy paw and dabbing it over her whiskers until she felt calm again. "Smokestorm mentioned a big prize! If you do really well, maybe I'll ask her if you can have an extra piece of prey tonight?" The she-cat's pink nose crinkled with her smile, egging him on. "It's greenleaf, after all."
A time of prosperity... and hopefully the last season Goldenpaw would spend with 'paw at the end of his name. Warrior || 45 Moons || StoneClan Honeynose Aqua || Made by Fawn || 342 Words

"Poppydung!" Dawnpaw said excitedly to his sister. The two apprentices had been coming up with bad warrior names for one another to pass the time, and they were just getting worse and worse. Poppypaw looked at him, whispered "Dawndawn," and then broke out into a fit of laughter. The two apprentices were practically wheezing by the time Smokestorm began to give instructions.
At the sound of their deputy's voice, Dawnpaw quieted down and listened intently. A competition? The tabby tom absolutely loved competitions, taking each one very seriously. This would be a special competition, too! It would be one that would actually help the clan, which was a double positive for the young tom.
As Kestrelclaw approached him, Dawnpaw started to mentally get himself in the zone. No more laughing around, this was a serious competition. Hearing that he would be paired with Goldenpaw caused him to nod in approvement; Goldenpaw was both his friend and his elder, so he would definitely be willing to teach him a few tricks on hunting. Dawnpaw looked over to his chubby friend, flashing a grin at him before looking back to Kestrelclaw.
All the information that his mentor gave him began to whirl in his head. In order to remember, Dawnpaw had to speak out the instructions. "Light footfalls, no chasing squirrels, got i-" The apprentice was caught completely off guard as Kestrelclaw licked him in between the ears. He and his mentor had grown close, a lot like family, and he purred ever so gently at the warm words directed at him. "How could I go wrong when I've had such an incredible mentor to guide me along the way?"

Paintedpaw 6 Moons - Stoneclan Apprentice
It was hot, and so annoyingly bright.
The multicolored she-cat trailed slightly behind her two siblings, both loud and happy and full of life. Poppypaw and Dawnpaw had practically been bouncing around excitedly since they were all gathering for Smokestorm's training session. Her ears flickered occasionally, catching the ridiculous names that both brother and sister were giving each other. It only brought an exhale of breath from the more sullen of the trio, pushing through her nose as her chest moved with it.
More like Poppyfrenzy and... No, Dawndawn fits.
Despite the negative attitude of Paintedpaw, she did love her siblings very much. She just didn't have the same energy or nature as the two of them. Poppypaw had always been a blur of crazy and hyperactivity, even from the time she had only just opened her eyes. If she could, Paintedpaw was sure Poppypaw would run laps around the entire valley. Dawnpaw wasn't as excitable, but his name fit his personality just as well. Always smiling, always happy and always ready to please some cat with his skills and training.
Paintedpaw just followed the two of them with a grunt of annoyance. Very much their opposite in so many ways.
Blank green pools moved from the forms of her siblings to where Smokestorm spoke, her ears flickering to catch the words and forcing herself to hold back another groan. What a drag... It wasn't that the multicolored feline didn't work hard, she just happened to drag her tail about everything. Not to mention, she didn't really like being out in the sun or heat, it added exhaustion onto her already slow moving paws.
If only Stoneclan was nocturnal...
But then, Dawnpaw would be sad that he never got to see the sun and despite her pessimism, Paintedpaw wanted both her brother and their sister to be happy. She could easily remember the broken hearted look within Dawnpaw's eyes the day he realized that their mother didn't love them the way he loved everyone and everything. The young she-cat would make sure he never felt that way again, or at least she would attempt to.
Apparently the mentors thought it better to hunt in pairs, and as such Dawnpaw and Goldenpaw were pulled away to work together. It didn't bother Paintedpaw too much, let those two wear each other out. Recently the three of them had practically been as thick as thieves, or rather the toms had been and Paintedpaw had the unfortunate luck of being dragged along on all their adventures and quests. At least now Petalrain couldn't force them back to the apprentices' den when they wandered about.
The thought of the she-cat that birthed the three youngest apprentices caused a small sliver of cold light to enter Paintedpaw's green gaze, but as quickly as it appeared with was swept back away into an emotionless, pale sea of emerald. The gloomy spirited feline turned her attention to Cicadasong, her bright and happy mentor. How she managed to be surrounded by brilliant rays of sunshine all the time, Paintedpaw would never know. Knowing her luck, she'd be paired with her bouncing sister, but Sunpaw and Blazepaw were also with them, so it was possible each younger apprentice would be paired with an older and more experienced apprentice.
"Who do I get to be stuck with?" Her tone was dull as she spoke, raspy and void of much emotion.
Save me if I become, My demons

Rowanpaw had ended up at the Little Woods almost by accident. She was trying to follow a scent trail, hoping to find some prey to bring home to hungry mouths - yes it was Greenleaf, and therefore the best season for prey, but mouths were still hungry (and Rowanpaw was just thankful to do her part) But StarClan - it was warm. Too warm. Far too warm. She didn't mean to intrude, really... but she lost the scent trail quickly. Disappointed in herself, she was mentally chastising herself, berating herself even, when she picked up a different set of scents. Kestrelclaw, Smokestorm... Cicadasong? All the scents were blending into oneanother. Then she heard the voices. Kestrelclaw murmuring instructions and tips to Dawnpaw, Paintedpaw being... Paintedpaw. One day, Rowanpaw hoped that Paintedpaw would like her. Or at least hopefully respect her. The multi-coloured cat was something of a mystery to her. Was she happy? Was she annoyed? Had... Had Rowanpaw done something wrong to her? She hoped not. In a small voice, she spoke up. "I'm so sorry to interrupt. I was following a scent trail and lost it, but uh... found you guys?"She looked down at her paws, expecting punishment. 203 / Taxx Fawn Ghost the Undead Goddess Ginger Aqua

An orange and white tabby tagged along with the large group. Goldenpaw had been among the apprentices summoned for a special training session. While he was curious what was going on, he couldn't help but wish he was elsewhere. Away from a particular she-cat in the group, to be precise. Yellow eyes narrowed as the tom glanced in the direction of a multicolored she-cat among the crowd. Why did his sister have to be here? He had no desire to have any training sessions near her let alone with her. He sneered at the bossy one before turning his attention to the path ahead. 'Grrr.'His attention was quickly attracted to the form of the deputy as she stopped and turned to the lot of them. She then went on to describe having some sort of hunting competition with a reward. The tom raised a brow at first at the suggestion before thinking about how he could use his skills to show-up his siblings and fellow apprentices. Or at least in his mind he figured he could. This could be a very interesting event. He loved himself some food so he had developed his own method for catching prey. Which came in handy considering he was a little on the chubby side and not in the best of shape. "I'd like Dawnpaw and Goldenpaw to be paired together, if that's alright."The young tom's ears perked as he overheard Kestralclaw speak. 'Dawnpaw eh? This could be fun!' The tom's excitement rose even more as he was essentially paired with one of his new friends. The two of them had been super close lately with Paintedpaw getting pulled along on their adventures as well so there were no complaints from him. The only thing that bothered him was the fact that Paintedpaw could potentially be paired with one of his siblings. While he was sure she could handle herself, he preferred she wasn't exposed to the witch or the baby. Honeynose soon approached him, taking his mind away from Paintedpaw's fate for a moment. "I heard. It must be something worth while for the deputy to come out with us." He meowed. "And I'd be thrilled if I could have an extra piece of prey without being yelled at." "I'm so sorry to interrupt-"The sound of another feline's voice made Goldenpaw turn. The amount of apprentices in one location suddenly increased by one as Rowanpaw appeared. The tom raised a brow wondering why she hadn't be brought along for this adventure. And it made him wonder even more if they'd pull her into it since she was already here. He sort of shrugged, letting the adults decide what to do from here. He was just ready to get started.

Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty "Pairs, then." Smokestorm nodded at the tabby tom and watched him gesture to Dawnpaw and Goldenpaw- getting the gray apprentice away from his sister so both could properly focus on the competition. If they didn't think she'd heard them giggling like kits back there. Their snickering hadn't been in the least bit subtle.
Green eyes went to Paintedpaw at her question, and Smokestorm's tail twitched at the dull tone and the way the question had been worded. Before she could speak, however, another voice broke in and Rowanpaw was staring around at the group. "Rowanpaw! What are you doing here- I thought you were with Valiantstride?" Though, she supposed, it wasn't a bad thing she'd shown up after all; they had an odd number of apprentices. "Come on, then," she continued, beckoning the new apprentice closer.
"You can pair with Blazepaw and Goldenpaw will be with Dawnpaw as Kestrelclaw asked. Paintedpaw can pair with Poppypaw, and Sunpaw will be with Rockpaw. That's all of you- get going! Warriors, pick a pair and stay close to them!" Hopping down, Smokestorm padded after Sunpaw and Rockpaw, tail up and waving as she trailed after the two. Deputy of StoneClan

33 Moons StoneClan Tom Kestrelclaw "Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't harm them." -Dalai Lama When Smokestorm dismissed them, there was a brief moment of awkwardness for Kestrelclaw and Honeynose. Their apprentices had been paired together, but Kestrelclaw suspected Smokestorm wanted only one warrior per duo; the deputy herself was already charging after Sunpaw and Rockpaw, looking alert as the hunting competition began in earnest.
After Dawnpaw's warming words, Kestrelclaw was ready to follow his young pupil over every hillock and rocky cleft, silently supporting Dawnpaw all the way. But, Kestrelclaw realized with a faint frown, that might not be for the best. Dawnpaw could even benefit from having another warrior keeping an eye on him and offering advice. Pushing aside a few dregs of disappointment, Kestrelclaw approached Honeynose amicably. "You'll follow Goldenpaw and Dawnpaw?"
"Only if you don't want to," she immediately conceded, her heart as soft as her pelt despite being several moons his senior.
Kestrelclaw dipped his head with a chuckle. "Dawnpaw will grow stronger if I'm not looming over him all the time." Memories, sharp as an eagle's beak, ripped through Kestrelclaw's peace of mind. What if...
No, Dawnpaw would be safe within a group, no eagle, no matter how desperate, would not try to attack a group of three cats. Kestrelclaw staunched the what-ifs bleeding through his certainty, before he squared his shoulders and walked over to Rowanpaw and Blazepaw. "I'll be close by if you need any assistance," he mewed to the team, and followed on their tails as they set off after the others. OOC: Feel free to skip me so the apprentices can get started. Or should we break off into separate threads?
