Strawberrypaw ~~~~~ The mottled brown apprentice had to hold back a purr as Hollowcry told her that her crouch had been much better. She didn't want to seem stupid or childish in front of him. Instead, she nodded her head to him, a silent thank you. “You were able to catch one mouse today, and since it is your first experience, I don't expect another. However, I do want to test out your new hunter's crouch when it is forced into action before our return to camp. I'm going to position myself in the clearing over. Pretend I'm a target, just, without attempting to actually pounce on me. Now remember, you don't want to allow the prey to hear you. Remain quiet.”
The she-cat nodded her head to him again, just before her mentor wandered off into the next clearing. The apprentice took a moment to steady her shuddering breath. She didn't want to alert Hollowcry of her position before she even started. Her green eyes shut for a moment as she visualized herself moving in a perfect hunter's crouch towards an unsuspecting Hollowcry.
With a new spark of determination, her eyes shot open. She bounced towards the undergrowth, slowing just before she hit the bushes. She slipped down into a crouch, feeling its new found familiarity almost instantly. Her muscles seemed to find their perfect spot and she slipped almost silently into the surrounding undergrowth. She made sure to keep her tail low, knowing it would easily give her away if it was not kept in check. Her ears were pricked, focused on the world around her. Judging by scent, she followed her mentor's trail, taking slow, deliberate steps. She was going slow, trying to figure out just where he was, just how far the clearing was. She was painfully aware of the fact she couldn't keep this slow a pace. Every moment you took to hunt, the more time you gave the prey to notice you.
Green eyes caught sight of Hollowcry's form, almost hidden from her view by the surrounding bushes. Her movements sped up as she quietly shifted around plants. It was much harder to do with the undergrowth surrounding her, as one wrong move would send things rattling and alert anything that was anywhere near her. And Hollowcry was definitely near her.
She figured he had probably heard her by now, so she made the leap quick, and not so planned out. Her paws landed right beside him as she stopped her momentum, attention turning back towards him. "What do I need to work on?" She asked him directly, not bothering to ask him if that was good or not. She didn't care if it was good. She wanted to know how she could take it from good to great. Upon finding his seat on the terrain nearby a tangle of thick brambles, the tom-cat instantaneously took to swiveling small ears atop his head in every which direction. Pale yellow eyes were intently searching out the nearest concealment of greenery for the familiar splash of brown-white pigmentation he would recognize as belonging to Strawberrypaw. All the while, his ebony nose hard-at-work to pinpoint the location of her fragrance. Perhaps, he being a little too closely tied in with his instincts to remain tuned into all things surroundings. The dark brown warrior wasn't giving Strawberrypaw much of a chance to outsmart him, what with his constant analysis performed. Regardless, he didn't see this thought as being enough of a good reason to stop him from doing so. It was in the instincts of a clan cat to remain cautious of their surroundings, especially when they were to be surprise-attacked at any possible moment.
His gaze raked across the surrounding brambles with a radiation of intensity, his focus firmly implanted on every possible noise he could make out. This was, mainly, to test Strawberrypaw's abilities to navigate her footwork when in the hunter's crouch. The slightest misstep could easily be the cause of failure, especially when their target was a clan cat with senses equally as sharp. Or, maybe Hollowcry was simply being an obnoxious mentor that refused to go easy on his apprentice? Either way, she had requested for him to shape and mold her into the best possible warrior. It was because of this that Hollowcry saw it fit to assure he never went easy on Strawberrypaw. For her to ask to be the best, and on her very first day of training... it was a quality Hollowcry found admirable. She had been showing grand amounts of potential, and they had only just began their first moon of mentor-apprentice training with one another. Surely, in time, she would continue to make Hollowcry proud. And if not, that would mean she simply wasn't cut out for being the best NightClan had to offer.
A sudden noise to the left caused Hollowcry's ears to perk and swivel, gaze turning sideway to examine the foliage he presumed Strawberrypaw to currently be hidden. The tom-cat didn't have a lot of time to react to his assumption, for the young she-cat burst forth from the brambles with an untimely, quick-paced surprise-attack. Briefly, his pale yellow eyes widened out of shock. However, it wasn't a shock that related to an element of fright or being caught off guard. More so, the fact he hadn't expected Strawberrypaw to react so swiftly and absentmindedly.
“What do I need to work on?” It was clear that Strawberrypaw had a deep craving for success. However, the dark brown tom-cat found himself wondering whether or not she was taking the topic seriously. Of course, he knew of her desire, and he would try his best as a mentor to assure she reached the goal. Although, she also seemed almost... rushed in her approach to Hollowcry's lessons. Strawberrypaw was bound to understand that she needed to put thought and intelligence behind her actions. And up until this point, Hollowcry hadn't considered that she may have needed a reminder of that.
Clearing his throat with a subtle cough, he allowed his limbs to shift into a standing position to be directly facing his assigned apprentice as he addressed her about a topic he considered to be serious. He would take note of her facial expression, and hopefully uncover whether or not Strawberrypaw was aware of what requirements were expected from her if she wanted to be the best. “You were able to remain silent for a long period of time, almost entirely causing you to be immune to my sense of hearing.” Hollowcry nodded his head to further imply his approval. Now, it was time for the downside. “However, your desire to react quickly and without thought and proper calculation causes your attacks to be clumsy. Clumsiness is not a trait possessed by those that are the best.”
Hollowcry's thinly furred tail of dark brown hue lashed through the air, his paralytic, hollow gaze befalling the large figure of Strawberrypaw to assure he was directly establishing eye contact for his next words. “With your desire, follows a large portion of dedication. Being the best warrior you can possibly be will not be achieved with allowing yourself to make hasty decisions. Less worrying, more initiative. The target will be inferior to confidence in each step you take.”
With that, Hollowcry glided passed his apprentice, paws angled in the direction of NightClan camp. As he had stated earlier, this little test would be marking the end of their first day of training. He didn't bother waiting to hear her response, for, he was not interested in it. There wasn't a correct way to respond to his statement, for an apology was not expected nor desired. It was meant to force Strawberrypaw to think about her actions: each stride she took, each thought floating into her intellect, etc. Until she voiced aloud that she no longer wanted to put in the extra work, no longer wanted to hear his criticism and overall, no longer wanted to be the best. Only then would Hollowcry lighten his amount of critical advice and instead, train her in the sense of a standard apprentice.
OOC: CLOSED THREAD. Unless, you want to write a post with Strawberrypaw. Either or is fine. ^^ I'll start another thread for their battle training sometime soon. [/blockquote]
