Strawberrypaw ~~~~~~~ The newly named apprentice could feel her jaws stretch in a yawn as she wandered off towards the apprentice's den. She'd pushed herself to her full extent for her mentor, Hollowcry, today, desperate to please him. She just had to be the best. Now, however, the mottled she-cat could feel the exhaustion pulling at her limbs. With the moon in the sky, she made her way to the apprentice's den, hoping to be able to get some sleep. She expected another long and tiring day of impressing her mentor again tomorrow. She didn't care how exhausted she became, she would continue to push herself. The apprentice, who was on the large side for a female apprentice, was just about to enter the den when a scent caught her attention.
Oxpaw. Her lips twisted in a silent snarl, and all of her previous exhaustion seemed to evaporate. She pulled her head up high and held up her tail, pushing through the entrance to the den as though she owned the place. StarClan would fall from the sky before she let Oxpaw see any sign of any sort of weakness from her. Her eyes flashed in the darkness with the fire that burned within her. He was so going down. O X P A W Oxpaw dozed inside of the apprentice's den; he had spent all of the day learning and practicing how to fight properly, and after moonrise he was going to see if he could FINALLY get all of his paws on a tree branch. Since the moon he had been an apprentice, the future-stocky tom had grown well, and he hoped it was a sign of his adult size, but his footwork (the worst word in existence, in Oxpaw's opinion) didn't grow as well as he did.
A vaguely-familiar and somehow instinctively unpleasant smell interrupted his nap, and brown ears focused on pawsteps entering the apprentice's tunnel. Who is it? A light blue eye opened blearily, and upon seeing the cat in question, the tom's fur bristled instantly. Oxpaw sat up, relieved that he was now taller than the younger she-kit, and yawned widely as a way to show off his teeth without hissing and looking threatened by the new apprentice. "Well well well, look what a badger dragged in," the older apprentice mocked, tail twitching in both annoyance and suspense; his mouth had grown with his fur. "Surely you can find your way back to the nursery on your own." He knew that Strawberrypaw and her brother were recently made apprentices, but he had never actually crossed paths with either of them.

Strawberrypaw ~~~~~~~~ Green eyes flashed to the other apprentice as he spoke up. "Well well well, look what the badger dragged in," Her only response to that was her steady, even gaze, filled with the fire of hate. She stared at him as he finished. "Surely you can find your way back to the nursery on your own." Strawberrypaw continued her path, heading toward her nest, tail flicking dismissively. She settled down on her nest, licking her paw and dragging it over her ear. She nonchalantly tossed a comment over her shoulder as she turned in a circle in her nest, searching for a comfortable spot. "Oh StarClan, good one Oxpaw." Even if you couldn't see her eyes roll sarcastically, you could hear it in her voice.
As she finally picked a spot and lay down, she finished her thought. "With a comment as great as that one, I think it's you who needs to find their way back to the nursery." Satisfied, the she-cat lay her head down on her paws. Maybe she could win this battle too, make Oxpaw look like a fool while he tried to insult her. It would all work out fine, as long as he didn't do something to really spark her temper. It was no secret that the mottled apprentice had a harsh temper that turned her into... Somewhat of an aggressive cat, to say the least...

O X P A W Light blue eyes returned Strawberrypaw's gaze, challengingly refusing to blink or look away until the other cat did so first. Great, now how was he supposed to nap in peace with this kit here? Patchpaw wasn't even here so he could ignore the newcomer more efficiently! His hair inevitably fluffed out angrily at the sarcasm in her dismissal, and Oxpaw debated jumping her while her back was turned, but quickly decided that wasn't the way to go about this. The tom would need to get the new apprentice to attack him first, that way, he could say he was just defending himself.
At her additional comment, the dark tabby bared his teeth, but managed to not hiss. His tail twitched angrily, however, and flattened ears betrayed his relatively calm voice. "What a witty retort; clearly, you're sharp as a fox-tail," Oxpaw hissed, voice similarly dripping with sarcasm. The tom nonchalantly groomed some of his fur down, waiting a few heartbeats until he could pull off a relaxed, conversational tone. "I'm actually glad Applepaw has a real mentor now; one that will teach him to be a real warrior." The last he heard, the two siblings were still being weird, but he hadn't paid them any attention since becoming an apprentice. How would he provoke her if she finally stopped with that Applepaw becoming a queen nonsense?

Strawberrypaw ~~~~~~~ It had all started out fine. Strawberrypaw heard the insult he threw back at her, preparing her own retort. However, it would seem that the apprentice who she was beginning to hate more and more just wasn't finished speaking just yet. Without warning, the she-cat felt her hackles begin to rise. Her teeth squeezed together as she fought with her rising anger. Without her initiation, she was on her paws, tail lashing from side to side as she stalked to the center of the den. She spat at the tom, her fur bristling aggressively, making her already impressive size more so. It was true that Oxpaw was growing, that he'd finally grown taller than her, but that didn't necessarily mean he was stronger than her. There was so much to fighting, she was aware, even if she hadn't had proper battle training yet.
"What. Are. You. Implying." Her words were choppy, cut up as her teeth ground together. It was an unpleasant feeling, but the she-cat didn't seem to notice it as she stared back at the tom with hard eyes, daring him to enter her staring contest with him.

O X P A W Ah, apparently her brother was still a sore spot. Light blue eyes stared back at Strawberrypaw superiorily, not blinking or looking away as the angry cat approached him, although his hair also bristled. Oxpaw was confident in his abilities, and in his own paws (also, the she-kit might have looked big, but he knew he was bigger). He got to his paws as soon as she walked within striking distance, having no intention of being unprepared. His spine arched naturally, fur along it bristling almost as much as his tail, but the tom didn't hiss or spit at her yet. He was calm. He was focused.
With the she-cat's words, Oxpaw knew he was close to victory; he just needed to seal the deal. "Oh, just that I'm glad the both of you stopped with trying to make him something he can never be. A mouse can't turn into a cat, and a tom can never be a queen." While the words were light enough, his eyes never wavered or blinked, instead staring challengingly right back at the younger cat. "I'm sure he'll turn into a... well, not a good warrior, obviously, can't work with what isn't there, but certainly more useful to the Clan than a full-grown tom that just hangs around the nursery all day."

Strawberrypaw ~~~~~~~ The mottled brown she-cat bared her teeth at him as her tail lashed. She would not tolerate any talk about her brother. Not from anyone, and especially not from this worthless piece of crowfood. She took another threatening step forward, green eyes alight with hatred. As she spoke, her voice was edgy, a clear warning. "You have ten seconds to take that back, or I will not hesitate to leap at you. You don't scare me, you dung-eater. No one does. I don't care if Ravenstar herself has to peel me off of you. I will not tolerate you."
As she spoke, her lips were completely peeled off of her white teeth, which flashed slightly in the dull light. With every second that passed by, she only found her dislike of this particular tom grow and grow. How he could possibly have rubbed her fur the wrong way so many times, she was unsure. But it was a fact. Her rage was boiling within her as she awaited his stupid voice.

O X P A W Victory. Oxpaw held his ground as Strawberrypaw advanced further, anticipation crawling through his blood. The cat didn't quite grin, but he was close to it, and light blue eyes shone like lightning. His fur, of course, stood straight up, and the dark tabby tail was surely twice its normal size. "And why should I take orders from you, kit?" His claws unsheathed and scratched at the floor of the apprentice's den threateningly, and his own lips peeled back to match hers. Oxpaw had no intention of walking away from this. This would be a great time to practice with his claws unsheathed, something Firejay refused to let him do. But his mentor wasn't here now, and the tabby tom was prepared. All he needed was for Strawberrypaw to take the first swing...
One day, perhaps, he would look back at these tussles and ponder. After all, if Strawberrypaw had gone after Patchpaw, he would have torn her to shreds. In the present, however, the seven-moon-old cat was more focused on antagonizing this enemy than logistics.

Strawberrypaw ~~~~~~ The she-cat had fully expected the answer she received. That didn't make it any easier to absorb. Her claws flexed and unflexed, biting into the dirt of the bottom of the den. She didn't dare break her eye contact with him, even as she shifted her weight. She had given him his warning. Many times over. She was done with the warnings. He'd paid them no heed, brushing them off completely. Now, it was time for action. Actions spoke louder than words after all. Well, it was right about time to let him know he should have shoved a paws down his throat and kept quiet.
With a powerful pounce and a hiss, she sprung towards him, claws outstretched. It was obvious that this was no training session, to either of them. It was even more obvious in the way Strawberrypaw's claws were aimed right for the tom's face. None of these shoulder hits for her. She was aiming right where it mattered.

O X P A W The shifting weight didn't escape the light blue eyes' notice, and Oxpaw tensed his muscles and crouched down to prepare for action. The moon of training had taught him a few things, and while he wasn't a warrior yet, he knew he couldn't counter-attack until he figured out how the other cat was going to attack. If the cat aimed high, duck, and if the other cat went low, pounce. The apprentice reviewed all he learned while staring down the younger cat, refusing to blink or turn his gaze.
At least, until the tabby-and-white cat pounced for him. Finally, Oxpaw turned his head, saving his eyes and nose from the outstreched claws that instead tore across his cheek. His shoulder angled towards Strawberry's chest now, the tom drove forward, using a "barrel the opponent down" technique he had tried the first day of combat training with Firejay. While Strawberrypaw was certainly shorter than his mentor, she had also leap up, affording him the perfect angle to drive his shoulder blade into her chest/throat area. All of his paws remained firmly on the ground, although since his mouth was in the area, he went for a bit of extra pain to his enemy and went to bite the leg that struck him. The shoulder counter-attack, however, was where his main focus was.

Every muscle ached from battle-training with Ravenstar. Ever since Boneshadow's death, the head of the Clan had taken over Frogpaw's training personally, which had been both an honor and a horror to the she-cat of 13 moons. Though she was a bit overdue for her ceremony, the tragedy that had struck the Clan was more than enough of a reason for the delay. Still. It was the gaping hole in the Clan that was Boneshadow's death that made it so difficult for her to look Ravenstar in the eyes. Even if the Clan leader didn't blame her for Boneshadow's death, Frogpaw still felt overwhelming amounts of guilt.
Rather than sit there like an idiot, too ashamed to move, Frogpaw had opted to give her absolute best to the Clan leader, to prove that Boneshadow's sacrifice would never be in vain.
Their training session had, Frogpaw was happy to say, been quite successful - though everything was going to hurt twice as much in the morning. Yawning soundly, the pretty dappled feline trotted across the clearing to the apprentices' den, amber eyes widening as her ears picked up the all-too-familiar sounds of a fight.
It was Oxpaw and Strawberrypaw!
No surprise there, but Frogpaw didn't really have the chance to think about. Darting forward to stand between the two when Strawberrypaw, flung back by Oxpaw's retaliation, hit the ground and took a few moments to collect herself. Body planted firmly to block each other's way, the older apprentice's tail lashed to and fro, her ears flattened, expression disgruntled. "What do you think you featherbrains are doing? Stop it! Things are tough enough as it is, the last thing anycat needs are a couple of apprentices trying to rip out each other's throats!"
Honestly. What the heck were they thinking?

Strawberrypaw ~~~~~~~~ The mottled brown apprentice felt excitement course through her veins as her claws scored a hit across the other apprentice's cheek. What she hadn't expected, however, was Oxpaw's retaliation. Of course. He had been training for a moon now. He had learnt some battle techniques. It shouldn't have come as a surprised to her when he shoved his shoulder forward, smashing it right into her chest and throat area. This not only shoved her back, sending her rolling across the den floor, but it also momentarily cut off her air stream. As the she-cat attempted to drag herself to her paws, her stomach hitched, desperately trying to draw in a breath, but for a moment, nothing happened.
In the instant it took her to recover from the hit, another apprentice pushed her way into the den, standing firmly between them. She noted Frogpaw's lashing tail and over all angry expression, but she didn't really care. Even as she listened to the older apprentice's words, which made complete sense, Strawberrypaw didn't flinch. Her stubborn attitude simply had her lashing her tail and glaring at Oxpaw over Frogpaw's back. The six moon old apprentice, who was large for her age, was obviously not scared by any means by this almost-warrior. When she spoke, her voice was raspy from the hit she had taken, but her tone was clear and anything but pleased.
"Then tell this foxbrain to quit insulting my family and I."

O X P A W The tom’s plan of attack had worked, although he needed a heartbeat or two to re-balance himself. Unfortunately, before he could follow-up his counter-attack into an actual attack, Oxpaw and Strawberrypaw were interrupted in their fight. Again. What do you have against me, StarClan? Was a decent fight and chance to put an idiotic cat in her place too much to ask? Tabby fur still fluffed out angrily, Oxpaw didn’t bother to try licking it down as frosty eyes glared right back at Strawberrypaw. Sure, he heard the older apprentice, and clearly he wasn’t fighting anymore (mostly because said older apprentice was in his way), but he didn’t really bother responding to the strangely-patterned cat.
Tail still twitching angrily, Oxpaw growled out a response to Strawberrrypaw. “If you can’t handle hearing the truth, the real last thing anycat needs is you on border patrol.” He was still angry that their fight was foiled again; if he wasn’t so adverse to spending an extended length of time with her, he would have suggested to Firejay a “battle practice” day, and just ‘happened’ to ‘accidentally’ unsheathe his claws for a strike or two… The apprentice was fairly sure a swipe across the face was a ‘bigger’ hit than just winding the opponent, although if they hadn’t been interrupted, he would have had the advantage.

"Oh put a mossball in it, wouldya?" Frogpaw growled, her aches and pains catching up with her enough to make her wince, tail-tip fluffing from the sharp twinge. "Oxpaw - stop picking on her family, and Strawberrpaw - stop letting him get to you." Though she wasn't about to start lecturing them, that was the best advice she could offer at the moment.
Inwardly, Frogpaw wasn't too sure if she could remain completely unbiased in this fight. It was wrong t insult someone's family - and she surely would've shredded Oxpaw herself if he'd said a single word even hinting at negativity towards her uncle, such was her level of frayed nerves and love of her kin.
Still, she wasn't wrong about her second point either. It would do the hot-tempered Strawberrypaw a world of good if she could develop slightly thicker skin, or got a better handle on her temper. There would be times when Oxpaw would deserve a good thrashing, and likely vice versa, but the goal here was to minimize the possibility of that happening. Moving towards the back of the den, she wearily sought out her pile of moss next to Darkpaw's, turning amber eyes upon the pair still glaring daggers at each other. "You two can take this fight outside in the middle of the whole camp or you can learn to kill each other quietly, because I'm going to be catching up on my sleep." Though she was bone-tired, Frogpaw still let her gaze grow a little sharper, as though leaving a hint that it would be in their best interests not to disturb her rest.

Strawberrypaw ~~~~~~~ The angered she-cat didn't even spare a glance in Frogpaw's direction. Her attention stayed glued on Oxpaw, tail lashing back and forth like a cobra in the midst of a dangerous battle dance. She wanted to claw his ears off. But she was painfully aware at her tactics of blitz attacks, relying only on her instinct, would only hold up against Oxpaw's trained moves for so long. She'd simply have to train with Hollowcry, become stronger, more intelligent and better than this scum of an apprentice. She would put everything into it, just as she had today, that much she swore to herself.
With a flick of her ear and one final, snarling glare, the mottled brown apprentice pointedly turned her back on Oxpaw, stalking off to her next once more. She settled down in it, curled tightly with her tail near her muzzle.
The battle may have ended, but the war had just begun.
