BLACKWOLF
Though a large apprentice battle training session had been planned by Ravenstar, the sudden death of Boneshadow had left the scheduled session momentarily forgotten in light of such a tragedy. Despite this, however, Blackwolf was not about to let the NightClan apprentices get sloppy or focus too much on the death of a much-loved cat; it just wasn't healthy. Assuming that because he hated dwelling on the bad things, that it must not be a good thing for the younger members of the Clan to deal with, it was quite early in the morning that Blackwolf had rose, stretched, skipped breakfast and hunted for himself for a few hours. Though all he'd caught was one measly quail, he'd dedicated enough time to the well-being of the Clan's stomachs, before he turned his attention to the Clan's claws and instincts.
Let's get this going. Stretching out his front limbs, claws unsheathed, paws spread wide, the warrior unscrunched, shook the snow off his pelt and strode off in the direction of the apprentices' den. The confident, wolf-like stride the ebony tom made across camp took on a slight hitch of surprise when a marbled tawny she-cat left the apprentices' den, her eyes on the ground as she sped past him. Identifying her by her coat to be Frogpaw, Blackwolf's ears folded off to the side in slight concern that was more curiosity than anything. What the heck's her problem?
Oh wait... Boneshadow had been her uncle and her mentor...
Though he didn't feel guilty over his initial thoughts about her being kind of weird lately, he did have a little more sympathy for the tawny she-cat and what she was going through. Of course, no one close to him had ever died (except Pinepaw, but they hadn't exactly been brothers), so it was impossible for him to know what she was feeling. Shaking his head free of thoughts of Frogpaw, Blackwolf's arrogance-laced vocalization was loud and upbeat as he summoned the gray and white warrior with a rowdy
"Up and at 'em, Grimpaw! We're wasting valuable daylight!" His tone was not the harsh, scolding tone of a drill sergeant, but rather a energetic big brother ready to get the day started, a flake falling onto the warrior's coal black nose from where he hovered at the entrance. Noticing a few apprentices scrunch into tighter balls at the sudden shout, Blackwolf smirked. "Yeah you're all a bunch of lazy tenderfoots too. Don't you have hunting or battle training to do?"
What answered him was a cacophony of fake-snoring or just flatout silence, none of the apprentices wanting to head outside in what was working it's way up to be a snowstorm and an early nightfall. Blackwolf scoffed in disgust. Well how do you like that?

Fools in love they think they're heroesCause they get to feel more pain I say fools in love are zeros Freezing air pushed its way through the apprentice's short pelt long before Blackwolf's deep voice reached his ears. The tom shivered in the air and began to wriggle a little, his mind sharpening from a fog to a point from the point that Blackwolf entered the apprentice den in the early morning and carried in the cold draft to the point where he stooped over the apprentice and tried to rouse him with booming tones directed seemingly not only at him but at the other apprentices in the den who were still sleeping.
The gray and white tom did not need much heeding from Blackwolf. His joints, cracking because of the cold weather, supported the apprentice as he pushed against the dirty ground and stood, still feeling unsteady on his feet. "What are the plans for the day?" Grimpaw questioned in a voice that, in another cat, might indicate excitement. The apprentice, instead, spoke in a flat, business-style tone. In all truth, Grimpaw was not particularly thrilled about training with Blackwolf. It was not because Blackwolf was a poor mentor; he trusted in Blackwolf's ability and Ravenstar's judgments. Grimpaw was not necessarily unthrilled, either. Grimpaw just wanted to get something that had to be done, done. He felt there was no need wasting valuable time on feelings of excitement.[/blockquote] GRIMPAW

BLACKWOLF
"What are the plans for the day?"
"Not starting it off as though we're attending a funeral-burial," retorted the coal-black warrior, finding Grimpaw's business-like tone almost annoying. He hadn't exactly been expecting Grimpaw to be leaping for joy, but some enthusiasm would have been appropriate; of course with Boneshadow's death, (and considering the circumstances behind it) Blackwolf could find it within himself to be empathetic towards Grimpaw's current state of...lackluster.
Shaking some flakes from his broad shoulders, the warrior flicked his tail for Ravenstar's younger brother to follow, his gait much like a wolf's lope, his movements fluid though laced with his signature arrogance that it was hard to miss - the subtle sway of his tail-tip, the rotation of his ears and the height at which he carried himself all obvious signs. He wasn't putting on a show, exactly, it was simply a style, a signature he had developed over the many years of feeling like a champion.
Drawing mismatched eyes back to the appropriately named apprentice in his wake, Blackwolf finally answered his question; "We'll be battle training, and don't get weird about it. If we battle, we battle for real - we can keep our claws sheathed, but don't come at me like a sissy, or you're gonna hurt." Laying down the ground rules, a chuckle pooled out of his throat the very idea; it was so annoying when cats grew too timid during battle-training in his presence. At first he had let it stroke his ego, that they were too afraid to strike him for fear of him lashing back with the force of ten cats just like him, but then it grew frustrating when he actually turned his attention to improvement.
It usually took a few verbal jabs to get them to do what he expected them to do, and though Blackwolf was aware that Grimpaw was unlike any apprentice he'd trained before, he was intending to go through his whole bag of tricks before he started inventing new ones - just to see what would and wouldn't work with this sullen-faced gray and white cat he was mentoring.
Expecting another casual response, Blackwolf stepped over a mound of snow a couple of apprentices were trying to push away from the Camp exit, his hearing selective to their grunts of effort as they pushed and dug and dug some more. He hadn't necessarily dismantled their efforts, but he hadn't been a big help either, walking right over it - but how was that his problem? There was only one exit out of camp, after all.

I read the news today oh boy About a lucky man who made the grade And though the news was rather sad Well I just had to laugh The fur of the young gray and white tabby bristled slightly at the sound of Blackwolf's retorts, piercing through his tender eardrums at time time of day that the NightClan apprentice found to be far too early. The young tom did not take too much offense to the tom's words -- fore, it was still too early for his fighting personality to kick in and Blackwolf spoke with a markedly light tone. Grimpaw, who usualy might respond with a certain amount of kick and attitude in his voice (he had a quick temper and tongue when he felt like he was under attack), the tom responded in tired tones. "That might be up to you," Grimpaw responded simply and padded to the opening of the apprentice den without waiting for Blackwolf.
As the tom stood at the entrance to the apprentice den, the cold wind, which was a gentle breath against his face, brought back memories of the past days events like a sharp slap in the face. Boneshadow, our deputy and a very noble cat, died to protect me from demon ... and I ran like a coward, Grimpaw thought, his lustrous yellow eyes darkening along with his mood as he peered out at the icy wonderland. 'We'll be battle training, and don't get weird about it. If we battle, we battle for real - we can keep our claws sheathed, but don't come at me like a sissy, or you're gonna hurt,' Blackwolf told him, pushing the gray and white NightClanner from his thoughts but not necessarily brightening his mood.
"Teach me everything you can. I want to rip this Demon to shreds," Grimpaw meowed, well, grimly and padded from the apprentice den towards the exit of the NightClan camp before pausing for his mentor.
He better be capable and willing to give me what I want, Grimpaw thought to himself, unsure if he should even wait up. GRIMPAW

BLACKWOLF
"Teach me everything you can. I want to rip this Demon to shreds,"
That was the first real bout of emotion from Grimpaw that Blackwolf had been able to feel empathy towards, the black warrior's ears pricking forward with interest, a dry chuckle slipping past parted jaws. Always scenting to catch wind of any prey skulking about that he had not already slain; "That's more like it. You and every cat in the Clan wants a piece of Demon -" muscles shifting and working fluidly as he passed Grimpaw by, gait quickening into an easy, swaggering pace "Give me your best effort and then some, and I will make you the kind of warrior Demon will think twice about crossing." Mewed Blackwolf, the words he spoke by no means an empty promise, the ebony tom confident in his mentoring abilities and the potential he knew lay hidden away in the younger sibling of their very own Ravenstar.
The fact that Grimpaw felt wronged by Demon would only serve as another tool by which to sculpt Grimpaw into the weapon-of-a-creature he desired to be. This wasn't going to be a light, friendly mentor and apprenticeship, Blackwolf had concluded. There would be times when Grimpaw was going to hate him, as he pushed him past his limits and way out of his comfort zone in terms of fighting and physical prowess. But Blackwolf didn't want Grimpaw's friendship, he wanted a strong warrior for the Clan who would, perhaps one day, maybe even the odds against Demon.
Blackwolf had zero intention of filling Grimpaw's head with the idea that he was somehow a match for the monstrous lynx that lived in the mountains, nor did he want the apprentice running off like a cat with fluff-for-brains to go challenge the behemoth. However, he would make absolutely certain to instill a sort of battle confidence in Grimpaw that every apprentice was going to wish they'd had.
Clawstorm had only been the beginning.
Now that Blackwolf had tested the waters and enjoyed every moment of it, he was looking forward now, more than ever, to truly groom an apprentice into the ideal NightClan warrior. He didn't want to be deputy or Clan leader someday (though the thought was nice, to run that through his mind when he was taking a few moments to relax); Blackwolf's biggest goal now, however, was to become a master-mentor.
The type of mentor that could be counted on to continuously produce excellent results: that was the goal he was hoping to achieve.

I read the news today oh boy About a lucky man who made the grade And though the news was rather sad Well I just had to laugh The gray and white apprentice, who was usually very still faced, gave Blackwolf a small grin. He had heard how well Clawstorm had been trained by Blackwolf and knew that, if he was compliant, the apprentice could receive the same excellent training and could become at least as good of a warrior as Clawstorm, if not better. The NightClanner was willing to give the effort if Blackwolf was. 'That's more like it. You and every cat in the Clan wants a piece of Demon- Give me your best effort and then some, and I will make you the kind of warrior Demon will think twice about crossing,' Blackwolf meowed in what Grimpaw instantly read as a voice encouraging him to go after the lynv in the mountain.
Grimpaw knew what his target looked like and had taken the time already to speculate what the cougar's weak spot might be and where. The apprentice would only have to grow in strength and appropriately bide out his time so that Demon was at his weakest and he, his strongest. While the tom wanted to go after the lynx intensely, Grimpaw was also not going into a suicide mission. When he chose to go after Demon, the NightClanner would be successful. "You have all my attention," Grimpaw meowed darkly, flicking his tail and feeling charged in the morning light to begin training.
"Let's not waste any more daylight," Grimpaw suggested, trying to seem both impatient and respectful of the tom. He was excited, for once, to learn from Blackwolf. GRIMPAW

BLACKWOLF
Though by no means up to the mastery with which Ratfur read cats and the situation, Blackwolf had not missed the subtle shift of Grimpaw's attitude, nor the spark of enthusiasm he had detected in Grimpaw's eyes and tone of voice. "Let's not waste any more daylight,"
"You read my mind, kid. Let's get this started." Drawled Blackwolf, flicking his tail for Grimpaw to follow; in a few short strides, the ebony tom entered the black pine forest, which were the designated battle-training grounds of the NightClan apprentices. Though a thick blanket of snow had yet to be trod on, Blackwolf didn't savor the pristine surroundings, his paws sinking in deep from the weight of his own muscular frame, reaching a shallower part near the center.
"Grimpaw!" Mewed the tom as he pivoted on his paws to face his young apprentice, meeting the warrior-to-be's even though excited gaze. "Tell me, what are the five weakest points on any cat, no matter the size, no matter the strength, no matter the skill." Mismatched eyes glittered like one sapphire and one citrine gemstone each, his black coat dense and making him appear larger than he was, framed against the snow and the ever-white backdrop of a forest in the throes of winter.
We'll start there. Even Demon has these weaknesses, but don't be stupid, Grimpaw. If you go after Demon now, Ravenstar'll have my hide. Though Blackwolf was not quite at the level of master-and-apprentice to say that he cared about Grimpaw more than just from one Clanmate to another, he would feel truly bad if the gray and white tom got himself injured on account of information he had provided him with.
If Blackwolf felt as though Grimpaw was going to do something he'd regret, he'd step in. He wasn't out to just protect his own skin, he was out to keep his Clanmates safe.
Word Count: 362 Notes: I see a bright future ahead of the both of them.

I read the news today oh boy About a lucky man who made the grade And though the news was rather sad Well I just had to laugh The vibrant yellow eyes studied the black warrior with a particularly charged gleam. His mentor seemed to brighten a bit at the voice of interest laced in Grimpaw's usually morose tone and in his suggestion that the training begin. Unlike usual, Grimpaw's limbs did not feel shackled or weighed down by heavy thoughts and his mind was sharply focused on improving himself for future plans. 'You read my mind, kid. Let's get this started,' Blackwolf meowed and the tom nodded, instantly trailing after his mentor after he began moving. Usually such phrases such as referring to him as a kid would irritate Grimpaw a bit -- especially considering his age -- but today was no such day. The tom's muddled white paws moved with no hitch in their step.
'Grimpaw!' the NightClan warrior suddenly meowed and turned to face Grimpaw, causing the tom's ears to prick up and his body to stiffen slightly. So it begins, the white-muzzled apprentice thought to himself as he awaited orders from his mentor. 'Tell me, what are the five weakest points on any cat, no matter the size, no matter the strength, no matter the skill,' Blackwolf inquired and Grimpaw's whiskers twitched as his mind instantly wheeled into thought. He could practically feel Blackwolf's mismatched eyes boring into his soul, the more effort he took in coming up with five correct answers.
Though Grimpaw was capable and intelligent, he was for the most part, untrained. While he was training with his father, Grimpaw had spent more time disputing his father's every training technique and spitting his attempt at loving the tom back in his face instead of training him. The time after Grimpaw's father's passing had been spent in grieving. The concept of weak points, no matter the fact that Grimpaw was nine moons of age, was foreign and out of the tom's reach.
And yet, the tom meowed with a low, confident tones in reply to Blackwolf. His words were not proud or boasting in that the tom felt that his answers were correct, but simply that the apprentice did not fear erring in front of his mentor and would not hesitate. "The five weakest points of a cat are his stomach, tail, face, chest, and back legs," Grimpaw meowed, not moving any part of his body other than his mouth. The tom was perfectly still and awaited Blackwolf's response, no matter how harsh it might be.
Grimpaw wouldn't apologize. GRIMPAW

BLACKWOLF
"I was expecting better, but your answers weren't bad. You're about half right." Approaching his apprentice as he spoke, Blackwolf rose up on his back legs and pressed his front paws to Grimpaw's chest, pushing lightly. "Did you feel that? One good whack there will knock the breath out of your body, but it takes more strength than most cats have to do real damage." Dropping back down to all fours, the black warrior almost made a point to mention the enormous scar stretching diagonally across his chest (courtesy of a badger attack in his younger moons), but didn't feel it important at the moment.
What was important, however, was that Grimpaw know the five weakest points, and not aim for anything that wasn't going to have the desired result upon impact. "The tail is not a weakness. And as for the face - you'll have to be a little more specific than that." Spoke Blackwolf, his mismatched eyes focusing intently upon Grimpaw as he made a light circle, shoulder-blades shifting, panther-like, tail cutting through the air in light swinging motions like a jungle vine.
"You were right about the stomach, hit any cat, no matter how big, how small, how skilled or how fresh, and it's going to hurt bad." He's got potential, but he's not using his head. Not like Grimpaw's a fool. A nudge in the right direction, and we may have a winner. Haughty stare morphed into a calculating one, the warrior pausing as his head tilted slightly, expression scrutinizing. "Guess again."
Though it was arguably quite dangerous arming Grimpaw with the knowledge he needed to try and destroy the lynx, Blackwolf was confident that Grimpaw knew his training was far from over. There was still so much to learn - and that flea-ridden sack of fur in the mountains wasn't going anywhere.

While Grimpaw knew that he was not the smartest tom in all of the clans, he also knew that he wasn't the dumbest. He also knew that he had incorrectly identified at least one of the weak points of a cat and had adequately braced himself for Blackwolf's reply. The reply the older warrior gave was not one that the NightClan apprentice felt properly prepared for. He expected better, Grimpaw thought to himself, his mind repeating Blackwolf's words in his mind once as his golden orbs watched his mentor. Such terms got to the apprentice because, though the NightClan mentor-apprentice pair had not crossed paths often, he had heard a great deal about Blackwolf's skill and respected the tom for it. Not only this, but the more wrong answers the apprentice got, the less he felt prepared to take on demon. And, for Grimpaw, there was a certain sense of urgency about the demon situation. I am certainly not getting any younger, the apprentice thought and let his golden gaze look behind Blackwolf to the space behind him. The apprentice would quickly learn that when training with Blackwolf, it was best for him to keep attention on Blackwolf and not let his mind wander. Grimpaw's gaze was away from his mentor and Blackwolf's black paw, pressed up against his chest with a certain amount of point-proving strength took the gray tom by surprise. 'Did you feel that? One good whack there will knock the breath out of your body, but it takes more strength than most cats have to do real damage.' his mentor told him and Grimpaw glanced down at his chest for a moment, thinking of the bones that stood in the way of a cat and another cat's vital organs. It made sense to the tom that the chest area would be a good place to strike. "Lunging at the chest might be a better move than striking at close distance," Grimpaw commented and did not quite expect much of a response from his NightClan mentor. It was almost a point of affirmation and solidification of the concept in his head, rather than something he expected was incorrect or of any insightfulness. 'The tail is not a weakness. And as for the face - you'll have to be a little more specific than that.' Blackwolf told the apprentice and the tom, if not feeling particularly self conscious, would have let out a sigh of disappointment in himself at this point. More specific? Well, it clearly isn't the mouth since obviously that would be a point of harm rather than ... Grimpaw spent a few moments in thought, his golden eyes watching the dirt on the training floor before his sharp gaze returning somewhat more confidently back to his mentor. "The eyes," Grimpaw meowed in regard to specifying what he felt was one of the five weaknesses in a cat. It made sense to the white and gray tom -- injure a cat's eyes and they would lose a very important sense for fighting. Grimpaw was somewhat more certain in his answer than previous. In regard with his other listed weakness, Grimpaw was less sure of himself. "Is the other weakness the neck?" Grimpaw asked hesitantly and hoped he would come off as being more thoughtful than simply naming off different body parts blindly. Through the minimal hunting that Grimpaw and his father had done, the white and gray apprentice had successfully killed a dormouse -- and had done so by tearing at the mouse's throat. Unlike a less mature cat, the ideas of death and dying in such a harsh manner did not frighten the tom in the least. In fact, with demon in mind, it excited him. Standing here before the solemn, clear-headed Grimpaw brought back memories of Tigerscar. Oh how ill-matched they had seemed in the beginning! He'd been a raging ball of battle-fury and unparalleled arrogance; Tigerscar had been more along the lines of this gray and white apprentice before him, not easily riled, though as sharp of mind as he was of claws. "That's more like it - Eyes, throat, back of the neck, stomach and the back heel are all crippling or fatal weaknesses on any feline." Replied Blackwolf, smooth, haughty vocals sliding through obsidian jaws; the dark warrior sized up his pupil, running over a mental checklist of how much Grimpaw would possibly know.
His former mentor - his father, wasn't it? - hadn't even taught him such basic concepts as the five weaknesses that can be exploited (or protected) in battle. Though Blackwolf wasn't encouraging him to fight dirty, he was more than aware, experienced even with other cats using those same five weaknesses against you on the battlefield, and sometimes it's necessary to give as good as you got, or permanent injury/death.
However, for now, he would be teaching Grimpaw how to defend against battle moves that sought to seriously do him harm. "First lesson!" Voice rising to suggest that things were about to get more interesting, Blackwolf shifted into a battle stance, a flick of his tail signaling for Grimpaw to take the proper stance of his own. "I'm going to teach you how to get out of a neck-bite without damaging yourself in the process." The technique he had in mind probably wasn't the conventional method of doing things, but Blackwolf had found throughout his decently numerous moons of warriorhood, that sometimes the more unconventional they were, the more effective.
Muscles shifting as he balanced out his weight, dark fur and sturdy sinew rippled as the wolf became a panther, mismatched eyes gleaming in the winterlight. Not affording Grimpaw much of a warning, the ebony tom stretched forward and lunged, a light toss of snow in his wake. It was not a fail proof method, exactly, but it had at least 80% for a success rate, and those odds were way better than nothing.

Every second wasted between every moment passed between the mentor-apprentice pair was more daylight wasted for the middle aged apprentice. Grimpaw needed to pack every second of his day with Blackwolf full of knowledge and needed to wring the older tom for information. He feared that if he didn't, he'd have no chance to take out demon. And if I can't take out demon, I can't restore my name nor avenge Boneshadow's, Grimpaw added, pupils quivering as he almost felt demon's breath hot against his back. The gray and white tom was not one to spook and would not have turned around -- not that the apprentice had much of an option. Blackwolf spoke. 'That's more like it - Eyes, throat, back of the neck, stomach and the back heel are all crippling or fatal weaknesses on any feline,' his mentor meowed in a tone Grimpaw recognized as being encouraging but definitely not praising. The NightClanner dipped his head before returning his gaze back to his mentor, head clear and white paws firmly placed on the ground. The gray and white tom was glad that his response had been accurate like he thought -- but now was not the time to dwell. No matter how rushed the NightClan apprentice was, Blackwolf's intentions caught him by surprise. 'First lesson!' the NightClanner meowed and Grimpaw's large ears perked forward. 'I'm going to teach you how to get out of a neck-bite without damaging yourself in the process,' Blackwolf meowed and the tom tilted his head. Such wold be very useful to the tom since a bit to the neck was very regularly a death sentence for the victim. Despite how necessary the tom felt it was to learn, the NightClanner wondered how he could learn such a thing without going about it contact-on-contact. The gray and white apprentice's fur bristled up and the tom came to terms with what was about to happen to him -- right before Blackwolf came charging to him. Grimpaw would've moved out of the way; if he did not already recognize that such would be counterproductive to the lesson at hand. In any case. I am never running away again, the NightClanner added silently to himself. He awaited the force of Blackwolf, back legs tense and eyes focused. "If someone latches onto your throat from the front," Blackwolf explained just before he charged. "Then you shred their underbelly as hard as you possibly can." And as for someone who is biting onto the back of your neck, here's where it gets hard. The brawny black tom did not try any fancy moves to wrestle Grimpaw into a position where he could properly demonstrate how to wriggle free, he simply threw his shoulder against the younger tom's, following through with a swipe of the paws to further disrupt his footing.
Pinning the younger tom down, Blackwolf clamped his jaws around Grimpaw's scruff to make it clear that the younger tom wasn't going anywhere any time soon. This didn't last long, however, as the older tom kept Grimpaw in place with his weight alone, Blackwolf's voice sounding just behind the gray apprentice's ears as he finally explained the right technique. "This isn't a foolproof method - it's going to hurt, but it's your only option. If someone bites the back of your neck, you're going to go limp, lean your head down, and then throw your head back as hard as you can. Like headbutting but all wrong."
Did he get what he was trying to tell him?
Blackwolf could still remember how furious he'd felt when a LightningClan warrior had first tried that technique on him - he'd limped away with a bloody nose, a chipped lower tooth, but he had won shortly after that move was delivered, though it had been successful in detaching Blackwolf from the LightningClanner's scruff.
"This doesn't work all the time, but it may just save your life one day, so we'll try it - see if you can throw me off after - but don't break my teeth, or I'll kill you." Blackwolf mewed, backing off a moment with a battle-gleam in his eyes. He was either half-joking or half-serious, about the teeth thing - it was probably better not to find out.

The dark gray and white apprentice's paws were almost attached to the earth, as if being held down by a sticky substance, while tense swirls of emotions whirled around his head. Grimpaw waited for the physical portion of the training to begin with complicated emotions, both of which picking up the pace of his young heartbeat. The NightClanner wanted to go ahead and make improvements to his battle technique so that he could go after demon, but also had a sense of fear like any other apprentice might have going against a cat much greater in ability. 'If someone latches onto your throat from the front, then you shred their underbelly as hard as you possibly can,' Blackwolf explained and the tom nodded in acknowledgement. Though the tom felt that Blackwolf spoke with a sort of nonchalance in discussing battle technique, Grimpaw was not bothered and even took time to visualize how he might be able to scratch at an imaginary cat's underbelly and cause damage. Certainly, Grimpaw knew that attacking a cat there would create significant impact and would mostly likely pull even the most determined cat off of his neck.
The tom felt his black mentor's shoulder push against him and the apprentice started, paws moving instinctively to avoid the tom's connection with the move and finding himself nearly tripping over his mentor's unwelcome paw. While this was a move that Grimpaw probably could have gotten out of, had he been more determined, the tom knew, again, that this was the only way to learn a particular technique. The tom's golden orbs remained focused on his attacker's movements and hardly budged from their spot when Blackwolf's jaws clamped down on the back of his neck -- as if he was not surprised or bothered by the physicality. 'This isn't a foolproof method - it's going to hurt, but it's your only option. If someone bites the back of your neck, you're going to go limp, lean your head down, and then throw your head back as hard as you can. Like headbutting but all wrong,' Blackwolf instructed the tom from behind his ear. Again, Grimpaw visualized Blackwolf's complex series of instructions in order to wrap his head around the topic. He supposed that by throwing his head back as quick as he could would be possibly effective in removing the attacker from his neck and bashing up against the attacker's chin/throat area with his hard skull as well. Such was perfect for both defense and offense. The simplicity and value of such an attack brought a smile to Grimpaw's features. 'This doesn't work all the time, but it may just save your life one day, so we'll try it - see if you can throw me off after - but don't break my teeth, or I'll kill you,' Blackwolf instructed and Grimpaw gave a small smile. "You can try," Grimpaw challenged darkly before lowering his mostly dark gray head a bit towards the ground and then jerking it upwards towards the sun as fast as he could without damaging the vertebrae in his neck. Grimpaw's speed and force with his actions was half-hearted in that he did not really want to cause harm to his mentor, but was hopefully enough force to pull the black tom off of him. Causing harm to Blackwolf would only disrupt their training. Grimpaw couldn't allow that. [/div][/div]

"You can try,"
Blackwolf chuckled darkly through Grimpaw's dark gray scruff, lingering long enough to feel Grimpaw try out the move he'd been attempting to teach him, a resounding thunk on the black feline's equally dark nose causing him to let go in an instant. He'd bitten the edge of his tongue, a fang having pierced the sandpaper surface a little too deeply for his tastes. He released Grimpaw and spat blood into the snow nearby, bearing a pink-tinged grin. "Don't get excited, but I might actually be starting to like you." The combination of Grimpaw's willingness to learn, overall lack of fear when it came to challenging him, and how well the younger tom followed instructions was starting to put Ravenstar's little brother into Blackwolf's good books. His tongue was smarting something awful, Blackwolf took a few seconds to lap up the snow, the sudden iciness making the injured muscle sting a little, but he ignored it, the heat from his mouth melting the clump before too long. He'd have to nibble on a piece of ice later, should his tongue swell up.
But for now, it was back to training. "You've got potential, I'll give you that. Next time you try that move, play dead and then do it, might give your opponent a little more of a surprise." If Grimpaw really had done that move any harder, then Blackwolf would have needed a trip to the Medicine Cat's den - a place he wasn't eager to visit any time soon, not since he and Ratfur had held her down and forcefed her a grackle - and would probably have some very unattractively chipped teeth as a result. Because Blackwolf didn't have to start on the basics, but rather, perfect or fine tune what was already there, the ebony tom momentarily paused in their practice session, momentarily lost as to what to do next.
He was used to running through the ropes with Clawpaw - now Clawstorm - since she had been utterly a blank slate before him every time they met up, Clawpaw building up her skills based on whatever knowledge he gave her. Grimpaw was a different case. Grimpaw had already been the student of someone else, and Blackwolf was more or less meant to finish off what had already been started. Scratching at his jaw with a hind leg, Blackwolf shook a few flakes from his pelt and reconsidered just what he wanted to accomplish today. "Up for a few sparring sessions? We'll stay away from the headbutting though, and I don't want to spend all this time talking and showing you different moves. Your best way to learn now, Grimpaw, is to watch and react. Attack me."
OOC: Just so this thread doesn't drag on forever, we can play out this brief spar a bit, then skip to the end of the training session, assuming they've done 2 or 3 more fights after this one. Then we can call this thread done and move on to a hunting thread! Sound good?
