A
t last, her Clan was no longer sharing living quarters with four other Clans and the Tribe. At last, they had a place they could call home. Stepping into the Mossy Hollow for the first time was a momentous moment for all, if only so everyone could rest their tired paws. And what a relief it was to find the cave covered in pillows of soft moss for them to fall into. Once every MistClan cat had been moved to the camp, she and Silverstar allowed them a day and night of well-deserved rest. But now, there was work to be done. It was strange to have Silverstar as her acting deputy, when she was well-aware he had more lives than a normal warrior as well as the name of a leader. Not only that, but he'd been a leader for longer than she had, and was older and more experienced. Part of her wanted his consul, since she'd always somewhat admired his complete lack of interest in the quarrels between other Clans and his success on keeping RainClan out of them, but the other part of her wanted - no, needed - his respect and for him to defer to her completely when it came to leadership of MistClan. She didn't want her warriors to feel any loyalty toward Silverstar as a leader. At least Silverstar was easy to get along with, and he hadn't shown any signs of a desire to challenge her in the past moon. But she knew that could change, and watched and listened to him closely for any warning signs. Still, she knew she couldn't do everything by herself, and she valued his experience - it would be crucial now more than ever. She had to trust his desire to help MistClan succeed, if nothing else. She rose at dawn with Silverstar, and once sunlight began streaming into the cave, she climbed the higher moss-coated stones at the back. " MistClan," she called, " gather here! There is much work to be done." The summons were informal, but she hadn't found an announcement spot that suited her yet, and the Clan didn't mind anyway. They began to gather, some more sleepily than others - due in part to their usual nocturnal habits - until they all sat beneath her and Silverstar. " It is time for us to begin making this place into our home," she began. The moss provided luxurious bedding material, but that was it - they had no dens yet, and the entrance was completely unprotected from predators. They had slept as a group in the softest parts of the hollow, but there were many areas scattered with sharp stones and rotting foliage that would need to be cleared in order to make the camp more comfortable. " We are lucky to have found a home with ready nest material already, but there is much more to be done. We need our camp entrance fortified, dens to be made, and any other critters to be cleared out." Just last night, some cat had found a spider nearly twice the size of his paw creeping onto his tail. And when they'd first arrived, someone had found old shedded skin from a snake. " We are also fortunate to have strong walls to keep out predators - now let's make sure there's no chance of them wandering in. I'd also like for the hollow to be checked for any other holes in the cave large enough for a cat to squeeze through. If there are holes any smaller, they should be filled in with stones and blocked with any sturdy materials you can find. Silverstar will be in charge of rebuilding our camp. " We also need to make sure our territory is safe. If there are any predators that have settled anywhere near our camp - or, frankly, anywhere on our territory - they must be driven out. And, of course, we need food - and herbs," she added, realizing the necessity when she caught sight of Rustpaw. " Shadowchaser, Rustpaw, please let me know what herbs we need most right now, and we can have a cat on each patrol responsible for gathering it." She didn't mention her other pressing concern - that the Mossy Hollow may become inhospitable in Newleaf. NightClan's former camp had been susceptible to flooding in Newleaf, and it was flooding that finally destroyed it. She'd be damned if she allowed that to happen again, so she'd need to keep an eye out for other safe places in the territory the Clan could make a home for Newleaf and Greenleaf. " I'll need our best hunters and trackers with me, as well as any cat prepared to patrol the territory most of the day. Every other cat should report to Silverstar," she finished, descending from the rocks once there were nods and an air of determination from everyone. She beckoned to Crowstalker with her tail. When he approached, she said, " Go find Berrypaw and bring her to me - I have a special task for both of you." She couldn't think of anyone better to keep an eye out for a potential backup camp than her former apprentice and her daughter. They were both clever and, most importantly, knew how to keep a secret. Eyes clear from sleep and wide and alert, focussed themselves intently on his former mentor, while his ears perked and drank in the words being spoken. They only strayed briefly from Cloverstar, to take in the various work to be done around their new home. Yes, it wasn't hard to see that while this was certainly a desirable place to live. The entire clan would have its work cut out for them. Still, the mostly black tom snorted softly at this. All it needed was a little effort from every cat and everything would eventually fall into place. And he would help make it so as well! As the meeting, was nearing its end and with Cloverstar's dismissive tone, the tom turned to move off to help with finding of food. After that, he had every intention of moving on from there to help assist with anything else he could. Yet, he stopped in his tracks when the beckoning from Cloverstar got his attention. He shifted with steady paws, towards her without a word of compliant, once near, his ears perked taking in her request. Find his apprentice and bring her back to her mother. It was a simple request and Crowstalker bowed his head. " Yes, Cloverstar." He said simply turning to do just that. His apprentice, shouldn't have been too far away, especially if she had been drawn into the meeting like the rest of the clan. It was just about finding her. "Crowstalker Talking." Many pairs of eyes found their way to the brown Bengal who stood in command of the clan. As the sound of Cloverstar’s voice reached her, ruddy red ears flicked and amber eyes glanced to the side. Even now, it was still rather strange following the call of someone who was not Silverstar. She did recognize the other she-cat as her Leader and still emerged from the designated Medicine Cat den at her call, it was just something else to get used to. Tiny paws quiet in their steps, Rustpaw sat near the sidelines of the gathered cats, near where Cloverstar and Silverstar stood but not close enough to be seen as a part of their pairing.
She listened intently to what was said, tail curling slightly behind her. Though she did listen, her eyes somewhat drifted away from the Leader and more towards the wall behind her. Not intentionally, but more recently she found herself spacing out a little more than usual. The remaining aftereffects of losing her previous mentor, most likely. It was only when she caught the addition of the word ‘herbs’ into the speech that she snapped back, gaze just barely shifting to the left back onto Cloverstar. Though, her shoulders tensed when she realized that Cloverstar was also looking at her. It was only for a moment, a quick glance, but it still put the young Meddie on alert. Maybe it was done intentionally, maybe not. But it was effective. It seemed that was the sort of effect Cloverstar’s gaze had on another.
She nodded in response to the she-cat, her head turning to meet Shadowchaser’s gaze for a moment. One ear bent downwards a bit, her eyes turning to the wide open entrance of the camp. She hadn’t explored the territory a whole lot yet. And when she had, she hadn’t gone far. She didn’t know what to expect from this new land, or what herbs would grow in their new territory, or what things they were low on since they didn’t have much to begin with.
She tried to swallow down her concerns, looking back to Shadowchaser as the speech ended. “So…..should we try to….go look for herbs?”

[googlefont=Kumar One][googlefont=Roboto] acting on your best behaviorturn your back on mother natureeverybody wants toRULE THE world berry berrypaw MISTCLAN APPRENTICE // 9 MOONS [attr="class","berrybody"]It was not the camp she had been born in, or the ledge she had first glimpsed her mother stand tall to address the Clan. But the environment had nothing to do with it; Cloverstar was the focus of her admiration, and she openly purred, gazing with shining eyes at the she-cat who commanded so much respect and discipline from any who came across her path. That's my mother, whispered a tiny voice in the back of her head, kittenish in its pure, simple joy. But this kitten had sharp teeth, and those teeth were in her eyes as she raked her gaze over the gathered cats, lip somewhat curling back at the oily fishy stench crowding in.
MistClan. It felt like a silly little compromise, something meant to appease the former RainClan cats, but they all knew deep down what had really happened. NightClan had swallowed RainClan, and to keep them placid, they had chosen a new name to honor both Clans. But it was Cloverstar addressing MistClan, not Silverstar. With any luck, a sickness would get rid of him and there would be no doubt who was truly in charge here.
Berrypaw listened in rapt attention to her mother's proclamation, less interested in camp fortifications and more-so in the cadence of her speech, the air of command. Her heart fluttered in quiet awe as MistClan began to move, given their tasks and made to choose what activity suited them best. Rather than wait for Crowstalker, she was already moving towards Cloverstar as if pulled there by a magnet, her whiskers twitching as she spotted her mother and her mentor exchange words - before the tom turned and looked right at her. She suppressed a scowl, wanting to bypass him completely to get her orders directly from her mother, but Cloverstar was already turning away, busy with something else.
Jealousy reared its ugly head for a moment, and she considered faking another incident, just to bask in Cloverstar's attention again. But that wouldn't earn her Cloverstar's love; she wasn't a kitten anymore, and she dared not give anyone the impression that she was incapable. "What did she say?" asked Berrypaw as soon as she drew level with her black furred mentor. "We should, but to be honest... I don't like the idea of us both going out to look for herbs. I would like to stay here and tend to anyone that needs help. We still have quite a few warriors with split, cracked pads from the long walk here." In his opinion, Cloverstar was already pushing her new Clan too hard too fast. He would have preferred she'd consulted him on the well-being of everyone present, but a decision had been made between the two leaders - it was his job, now, to simply adapt to that.
"I know it's new territory," he said gently, guessing some of her concerns. "Would you feel comfortable going out with a pawful of warriors to search the area? We absolutely need broom and comfrey, just as a start. Have you seen those herbs before?" It was a question asked in earnest, but Shadowchaser quickly stammered a correction, realizing he might have offended the she-cat. "Not-Not to say that Dewfrost hasn't taught you enough! I merely meant that your herb knowledge would be different than mine, since we first learned about plants have to our environment..." He trailed off, embarrassed. What would Smokefur say if she saw you stammering like a half-frozen squirrel? It was strange, being back in the valley, but not home. Unfortunately, home no longer existed. It had been swallowed up by the water that formed the lake, and she had blindly followed the remnants of her family to the marshy pine trees and dark cavern that was supposed to become home. The adjustment would take time, and she’d have to learn a whole new territory, one that used to be forbidden to her Clan, and probably new hunting techniques, as well. There was also the issue of having to teach her new Clanmates how to interact with her, and she didn’t look forward to the stares and the irritation she knew she would face in the interim. In the past, not every cat had been kind to her when they discovered she was different, but she clung to the memories of those who were happy to learn her ways of communication. It helped her overcome her disappointment at meeting those rude individuals, and was enough to keep her spirits up. A gentle brush across her shoulder was enough to get her attention, and she looked up to see Coldrush standing beside her. She smiled at him, and he pointed his tail towards where the former NightClan leader was standing. She could see the cats beginning to gather, and could see Silverstar sitting near. Frozensong sat next to her brother as Cloverstar spoke. She watched her Clanmates to give her something to do during the speech, and once the meeting was dismissed, continued to watch to try to figure out what was happening. She turned to Coldrush, who seemed to be thinking, before he turned to her and gave a quick pawswipe down. “Pay attention.” Frozensong nodded, watching as he tried to translate instructions. The white tom found two pebbles lying nearby and pushed them together. He waved a paw in a circle over them, then split them in half, pointing at each small stone individually. “Everyone, two groups.” Frozensong watched intently as he pointed again to one stone, then dropped into a hunter’s crouch and crept forward. “One group, hunting.” Then, he pointed to the second pebble and move toward one of the walls of the cave. On instinct, Frozensong followed, and Coldrush put his forepaws on the wall. He felt along it, and when he came upon a small crack, dropped down and scraped a bit of moss from the cave floor. He used the moss to fill the crack, packing it in tight, then turned to Frozensong, and used his tail to point out where others were already beginning to fortify the stone walls and plan out dens. Frozensong watched for a moment, thinking, as her mind worked to translate the message that the second group was working to make this cave more suitable for living in. Once it clicked, she turned to Coldrush and nodded happily as she waved her tail behind her. Coldrush gave her a small smile and brushed her pelt as he walked off, no doubt going to do his part at making this place home. Frozensong looked around the cave trying to decide where her paws would be best served, when she caught sight of a familiar rusty pelt. Coldrush hadn’t mentioned anything of herb gathering, but she figured it wouldn’t hurt to see if the medicine cats needed help. With a small bounce in her step, Frozensong padded across to where Rustpaw was speaking to another cat who smelled like herbs. The white warrior assumed it was the other medicine cat, and dipped her head in respect to him before taking a step forward to press her ear against Rustpaw’s chest. Upon feeling the she-cat’s heartbeat, Frozensong purred and stepped back, offering a quick lick to her pseudo-daughter’s head. She turned to the other healer, beginning to take a step forward before faltering. Instinct was telling her to greet him like any other cat, but doubt wanted her to hang back. What if he wasn’t friendly? What if he didn’t want to be touched? He couldn’t be that mean if he was a medicine cat, right? Frozensong leaned back a little, ears beginning to flatten, before she caught herself. Drawing her paw back to her original position, she gave herself a little shake before starting over. Green eyes locked onto the dark brown tom, giving him an inquiring “mrrr?” as her tail curled over her back in a questioning curve. Abyss Fawn

Puddlepaw‘s grey fur was glossy and well kept, as she had made an extra effort to look presentable today. Her posture was immaculate and her expression displayed focus. And still- as she was standing inbetween former NightClan warriors, listening to the former NightClan leader, even while looking at her own, RainClan‘s leader, she could not help but feel self-conscious. These new clanmates of hers were strangers that up to a few moons ago had been nothing but nursery tales to scare her into staying in camp. Suddenly they were real, very real cats with their own minds and lifes and thoughts. And Puddlepaw wondered whether her good manners would be enough to hold her own in this unfamiliar setting. It was a comfort to know her sister close by but Puddlepaw almost felt like she should use this time to make her be known outside a matching set. Her name had not been called specifically but she was no stranger to being overlooked. She would just look for a task for herself, make herself useful. Puddlepaw turned and walked towards a familiar face: Rustpaw. She was a friendly face and calming presence so her first choice. The medicine cats were in conversation as of now so Puddlepaw stood back in a respectful distance to wait her turn. She almost backed away when she saw another cat approach but relaxed when she recognized Frozensong, whom she greeted with a nod. When she found an opening, she stepped forward, bowed slightly in the proper way to greet a cat of the medicine standing, and said: “Good day Shadowchaser, Rustpaw. My name is Puddlepaw. May I also offer my assistance in preparing the medicine den? I am quite attentive to detail and learn quickly, should you need help in gathering plants or carving out storage room for herbs and cobwebs.“She did not really know Shadowchaser yet and her heart was still aching for Dewfrost but she felt more comfortable with a medicine cat. Perhaps it was faulty thinking on her behalf but medicine cats had their own code that prevented them from jumping an unassuming cat like her. Tags: Abyss ; Fawn ; Amber
