As the air blew cold across the valley, Glacierpaw was glad for his long fur. Usually the trees protected his Clan from the wind, but in the dark of night and gleam of moon, the air was chilling. Leaf-fall had come.
Lionstar's announcement at the border was met with a grave nod from Glacierpaw. He wondered what NightClan cats were like to earn such a warning. He knew they stunk, if their border marks were anything to go by. Timberfrost said he would meet many cats, not just their neighbors, at the Gathering.
His huge ears spread at attention, and his emerald eyes swept all around once TreeClan entered neutral territory. He trotted at pace with Pumafang easily, following at his mentor's side like a trusted hound. He remembered Timberfrost's teachings of looking beyond the surface when surveying. Glacierpaw had never been to a Gathering before; his own ceremony had been after the last one.
He'd been expecting the place to be filled to the brim with foreign cats, but when TreeClan entered, he found the place empty except for the silvery light from the full moon. "We're first. Is that common?" he asked aloud. Glacierpaw's eyes widened as his veteran leader leapt to the top of a big boulder, looking very much like the great ancestor in Mistylight's kit tales. For the first time, Glacierpaw's stoic face lay bare in his awe of Lionstar. "Wow," he whispered. He wrapped his tail around his paws and got comfortable at the base of the rock. He was content to watch cats slowly begin pouring into the Claws in groups.
He recognized LightningClan's scent immediately. "That must be... Redstar," he said with a glance at fellow apprentice Robinpaw. Then many more cats that he didn't recognize, and finally ending with NightClan's familiar scent. "Darkstar...," he whispered almost to himself. She looked tough as talons, but he couldn't help but be reminded of Cherrykit with that dismissive ear-flick and fierce face. He wouldn't want to get on her bad side.
"Are we allowed to get a closer look at them?" Glacierpaw asked cautiously.

"N ow remember, tonight is the night when the other Clans will be looking at you, so it's very important to look your best. First impressions are very important." Sunwind meowed, her long calico pelt buffeted by the wind as she trotted alongside her daughter, eyes round with worry. Robinpaw nodded patiently, accepting her mother's advice for what seemed like the hundredth time that she had given it. "And remember that tonight is the night of truce, so do as Lionstar tells you and don't share any sharp words with NightClan." Yet again, Robinpaw nodded, wondering if Sunwind was even aware that Robinpaw had actually been to a gathering before. But of course, she didn't have the heart to correct the calico queen. Sunwind always liked to feel as though she were involved in Robinpaw's life, passing on valuable knowledge. A lot of the time, she relayed only common sense that her kit was already well aware of, but Robinpaw accepted it with a silent, strained smile. She felt guilty for the relief she felt when her mother finally peeled away from her and joined the other warriors.
They arrived at StarClan's claws, staring with a flicker of excitement at the huge pillars of rock that towered over the meeting place of the Clans. It was sacred ground, and there would never be a time when Robinpaw wouldn't feel a flash of admiration for this ancient meeting place. She stuck close to Glacierpaw, remembering how daunting her own first gathering had been, and wanting to have someone she had already spoken to before around so that she didn't need to struggle to find somewhere to sit. Her eyes settled on an empty clearing, surprised that they were the first to arrive. The stillness of the silent stone fangs and claws screamed in her ears. She sat beside Glacierpaw, perking her ears at every slight sound and rustle. Eventually, LightningClan arrived, streaming into the clearing one after the other.
"That must be... Redstar," Glacierpaw's voice spoke up beside her. She followed his gaze to the large russet-orange tom that strode proudly at the head of his Clan. She nodded. "That's him. I bet it wasn't hard for his clanmates to learn his new name." Her whiskers twitched with amusement. "His warrior name was Redscar." Her gaze darkened with the arrival of NightClan. They seeped like black tar into the clearing, weaving among StarClan's claws like hungry pike. "Are we allowed to get a closer look at them?" Glacierpaw asked, transfixed by the NightClan warriors. Robinpaw flicked her tail uncertainly. "There's a truce, you can talk to anyone you like. But..." She frowned, green eyes darkening. "Be careful. I wouldn't be surprised if NightClan tried to cause trouble. I've heard cats say that they're rogues disguised as Clan cats." She swivelled her eyes back towards the NightClan cats, spotting apprentices among them. "No cat knows what they might do."

Sunpaw I'm gonna take this itty bitty world by storm There was no repressing the full-body wriggle of excitement that passed through Sunpaw as he passed between the high stones that ringed the Gathering clearing. A rock- not quite as tall and flat on top to allow the leaders to sit there- rose from the ground on the farthest side from him. RainClan was the second to last to arrive, NightClan cats padding from their side of the forest just as he noticed their absence, and the chatter and flood of scents of the five Clans- and the lone Tribe- filled his nose in a dizzying mix of odors.
His ginger flank bumped Emberlight's, but the ginger deputy was already heading away toward the other seconds of the Clans, and Sunpaw was left alone but for Rosepaw at his side. With a quick look over at his sister, Sunpaw lifted his tail and strode boldly right into the midst of the crowd. He couldn't let Rosepaw think he was scared, and they were just cats. Even if some of them were twice his size... and so broad and muscled, he was sure they could flatten him with ease. It's a Gathering. We're at peace.
The words didn't slow the beating of his heart, but no cat needed to know about that. He skidded to a halt as a black tom with the scent of TreeClan on his fur loped past in front of his nose, and then he spotted the two cats, a torbie and a silver tabby, sitting side by side. They had the same wide-eyed look, and he hoped they were apprentices like him and not just weird warriors. They too, he noticed as he neared, were TreeClan; Sunpaw waved his tail in greeting as he came to a halt in front of them.
"Hi! I'm Sunpaw. Who're you?" A paw rubbed over his nose, briefly erasing the flood of strange, too-strong scents and replacing it with the pleasant smell of fish and river water; too bad he couldn't sit here the whole night with his paw held over his face. He turned back for the first time to see if Rosepaw had followed; she was there, and he waved her forward, setting his paw down again. "And this is my sister, Rosepaw."

Glacierpaw nodded at Robinpaw's remark. He'd found it funny, but the ticked tabby tom rarely laughed but rather nodded at humorous comments like an approving king. "It will take us forever to learn Pumafang's in the future; Lionstar's been our leader for as long as anyone can remember," he replied. Especially with the deputy as his own mentor.
Baring his teeth and exposing his tongue, he pulled the cat-heavy scent into his mouth to really savor it. With his large pinecones-for-ears posed on either side, Glacierpaw's wedge-shape head looked grotesque in its Flehmen response. While Robinpaw explained the deal about NightClan, the lanky tom inhaled deeply in their direction. His eyes squinted in his own examination of them. I'll look into that rumor with Pumafang, he thought. Glacierpaw was a tom often who took things literally. He banked their smell and told himself to ask Pumafang what a rogue smelled like next time they were on patrol.
A RainClan tom suddenly approached the two of them. Glacierpaw's long flowy tail waved at the newcomer. While his facial expression remained stony, his kind eyes closed as he tucked his chin in greeting. "Glacierpaw. Nice to meet you, Sunpaw," he replied. Another dip of his head in the direction of Rosepaw. "A pretty name..." He hadn't expected another cat to brazenly introduce themselves like that, but as Robinpaw said, it was a truce. So strange to see all these cats mingling together after repeated lessons to challenge any non-Clanmates and possibly battle them. He felt torn, wanting to be friends with this spunky little tomcat and wanting that strange smell to go away.
"It's my first time at one of these," Glacierpaw confessed. "Robinpaw here knows the deal though." He nodded proudly at the older apprentice. He respected Robinpaw since she'd acclimated him to being an apprentice, and she was so much more experienced. "How about you?"

There was a mixture of emotions wriggling throughout the pretty she-cat's body as she remained fairly close to her brother as they made their way towards Starclan's Claws with the rest of Rainclan. Excitement, for obvious reasons because it was her first Gathering, nervous because she was so far from the safety of her home and scared without the reassuring comfort that her father was merely a yowl away.
The second Silverstar had called her and Sunpaw but didn't mention Russethawk, the ginger and white she-cat quickly searched for and darted to the senior warrior to press her face into his ruddy colored chest fur. Her worries and fears of not being safe were calmed by a purr and gentle licks to her ears. With a soft tone, Russethawk had left her with the reminder that there was a truce among those who gathered, no-cat was allowed to start trouble or hurt another cat without fear of retaliation from Starclan.
It gave her some comfort, but she'd honestly prefer if her father had been apart of the party.
Wide teal eyes looked around in amazement as the dramatic she-cat padded along Sunpaw's flank, making sure their fur brushed occasionally so she knew he hadn't left her by herself. Her attention of gazing at the massive warriors and sleek coated felines, was drawn as she felt Sunpaw leave her side. Quickly altering her course, Rosepaw scampered after him as he seemed to make a beeline for a couple of young looking cats with a distinct earthy scent that curled distastefully within her nose.
Heat flickered beneath the fluffy pelt of the Rainclanner, eyes practically twinkling as she soaked in the compliment given by the lanky, leggy silver tom. Such a simple thing, calling her name pretty was enough to enrapture the young romantic. Lifting a paw to cover her muzzle, the ginger and white feline giggled slightly before lowering her haunches to sit comfortably. "Why, thank you." She purred in a slightly dreamy voice, unable to contain the glee within her fluffy form.
"Glacierpaw is quite a handsome name as well." Her voice was a high-pitched but delightful tone as she continued, wrapping her tail around her paws as she lowered the one at her mouth to give it a slight lick before drawing it over her ear. "This is also our first time here, it is... an interesting experience to say the least." Rosepaw slightly turned her head to let those pretty teal pools move around at the sea of cats from different clans before returning them to the silver tom of Treeclan, giving him a sweet smile while practically batting her eyelashes. "What do you think of it so far?" Rosepaw of RainClan Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair โ

R obinpaw liked Glacierpaw. He was quiet and very respectful of others. She got the impression that he always tried his best, no matter what stood in his path. She appreciated and admired that trait, and knew that Glacierpaw was a clanmate she'd like to be able to someday call a loyal friend. He wasn't the most expressive of cats, but Robinpaw was not the type to judge someone based on outward appearances. Whether he understood her joke and simply didn't express his amusement, or if the humour flew right past his ears, she didn't know. But she did know that she didn't mind, though she found his stiff regal mannerisms somewhat amusing. He looked like a leader perched on great rock, about to address the gathering. "It will take us forever to learn Pumafang's in the future; Lionstar's been our leader for as long as anyone can remember," The silver tom pointed out, and Robinpaw nodded in agreement. He had been leader since long before she was a kit, and she felt a twinge of anxiety at the thought of Lionstar joining their ancestors and Pumafang taking his place. She couldn't imagine a TreeClan where Lionstar wasn't leader.
Slipping into an unbidden silence, her mind wandered to other things as she allowed her mind to drink in her surroundings. Her green eyes almost watered with the barrage of scents that overwhelmed her senses. The blend of Tribe and Clan made the gathering so much more overpowering than the usual border scents, and the background murmur of distant conversation drifted around the clearing. The ground was uncomfortably hard, the colder moons bringing with it firmer soils and colder winds. Leaf-bare was approaching. It was last leaf-bare that Robinpaw had become an apprentice, and it was scary that her apprenticeship might be drawing to such a swift close. She wondered what every other apprentice often wondered; what her warrior name might be. Robintail, Robinfoot, Robinfeather... Robinsong... It was hard not to also wonder what his name might have been. Ravencall?
She let the thought gently slip away as another cat came into her attention. He was a dark russet red in the moonlight, with a white underbelly so stark that it looked like a coating of snow. Beside him was a feline that looked much his counterpart, but bushy-furred and with such an air of elegance that Robinpaw wondered if she was just an undersized queen. The tom waved his tail in a friendly gesture, making his way eagerly towards them. The strong aroma of fish and river-water bathed her tongue, and there was no question as to what Clan this pair were from. Robinpaw dipped her head politely, a curious gleam in her pale eyes. "Hi! I'm Sunpaw. Who're you?" He said it so brightly and so abruptly that Robinpaw half-wanted to laugh. "You look like a Sunpaw." She joked, tucking her ginger and white tail around her paws. "I'm Robinpaw." She meowed, but beneath those words were so many suppressed questions. It was hard to not be extremely curious about one of the Clans they didn't share borders with. And what was it like, to live on a diet entirely made up of fish? "And this is my sister, Rosepaw." Sunpaw only seemed to realise then that his sister was at his side, and Robinpaw finally knew for certain that this petite little feline was, in fact, an apprentice. "A pretty name..." Glacierpaw commented, and Robinpaw shot him a look that was a blend of disapproval and amusement. "It's my first time at one of these," Her clanmate continued. "Robinpaw here knows the deal though." She was surprised by the admiration in his tone, as though he were presenting a seasoned warrior who had seen many victories over the seasons. Bashful, she waved away his compliments. "Don't listen to him." She laughed, a friendly and rumbling chuckle without a trace of any sort of mockery or ill-will. "He thinks I'm an elder because I've been an apprentice for nearly four seasons."
It was clear that Glacierpaw's mild compliment had stroked Rosepaw's ego. Robinpaw didn't know whether to laugh or roll her eyes at the exaggerated response, a bow fit for a tribe cat. "Why, thank you." She drawled, her fluffy fur clearly ruffling with pleasure. As amused as Robinpaw was by these antics, she instantly disliked Rosepaw. She knew how an inflated ego was so often misplaced, and imagined that this pretty petite little apprentice could easily prove herself to be an infuriating diva back home. You can't judge a tabby by their stripes. She reminded herself, forcing a pleasant smile. "Glacierpaw is quite a handsome name as well." Rosepaw continued, almost shattering Robinpaw's conviction to not judge her so harshly and so quickly. The calico cleared her throat, glancing awkwardly at Sunpaw as though begging him to cut into the conversation and steer it away from blatant flirting. She didn't have to rely on Sunpaw, thank StarClan. Rosepaw herself was the one who changed the subject. "This is also our first time here, it is... an interesting experience to say the least." Robinpaw flicked an ear. It was interesting alright. But then Rosepaw turned back towards Glacierpaw to bat her eyelashes cartoonishly, and Robinpaw immediately knew that Rosepaw was definitely not going to be including her in the conversation. She should have guessed already. The moment Glacierpaw offered this little flower petal a compliment, she had decided to stick to him like a burr to a pelt. "What do you think of it so far?" She asked him sweetly. Robinpaw wanted to chuckle and turn and walk away all at once. "First time I came here, I hardly spoke to anyone." Robinpaw answered, turning her gaze on Sunpaw. "RainClan, I assume?" She meowed amiably. "Rosepaw and Sunpaw... I always thought RainClan named their kits after fish, and things that can be found around water. Reed, stone, salmon... things like that." Her whiskers twitched. "I guess I've been proven wrong."

Sunpaw I'm gonna take this itty bitty world by storm "My first time, too," Sunpaw replied, the words trailing off as he frowned at the compliment paid to Rosepaw; when he turned back to her, just as he'd expected, she was beaming at Glacierpaw. Green eyes rolled skyward and he hunched over with an exaggerated gag. "Stop it before you make me sick," he grumbled at her. "Why do you have to go doe-eyed over every cat that pays you attention? Just because he said you have a nice name doesn't mean he's... like, planning to be your mate or anything. Besides, he's TreeClan."
The scent of trees and unfamiliar prey wasn't exactly unpleasant, but neither was it the calming smells he'd grown up around. It couldn't be any better than the territory they lived in. Rosepaw was just weird. Turning his attention to Robinpaw, Sunpaw continued: "You've been to a Gathering before? Which one? What happened? I wonder if anything exciting will happen tonight!" His gaze swiveled toward the leaders' rock, where Silverstar was now sitting among the other five leaders, trying to match them with the stories he'd heard from Ashflight. Lionstar, Darkstar, Redstar... was that big tom Hawkstar? But then who was the little cat beside him?
Forehead wrinkling in confusion, the ginger-and-white tom flashed a glance back at the TreeClan cats. "Hawkstar's brown, right?" Or maybe he'd misheard- but it didn't solve the mystery of the smaller cat.

Despite having the most experience with catty young she-kits, Glacierpaw was still dense as ever sometimes. He knew that compliments were the best ways to being in his sisters' good graces; they always stopped complaining or whining when he paid them attention. However, he didn't quite realize that with cats that weren't related to him, those compliments could earn a different opinion. Robinpaw's side-eye went unregarded. The tom's large eyes blinked as he was complimented in return.
"Is it?" he asked; he'd never given it much thought. He knew what a glacier was--a big mountain of ice--but he'd never seen it for himself. "I bet some of those cats have seen a glacier"--he jerked his chin at the Tribe foreigners--"but not me." Sunpaw's outburst earned no reaction from Glacierpaw except for a tilted head and a demure nod of agreement at besides, he's TreeClan. The fawning didn't bother Glacierpaw in the slightest.
He agreed with Rosepaw; it was an interesting experience. There were so many other cats around: some hanging out, some socializing like they were. Glacierpaw thought just about everycat seemed very nice; after all, they'd agreed to come here to the Gathering and discuss how their Clans were doing. That seemed very civilized, in his opinion, and thus he gave Rosepaw a rather kingly nod (slow and with his almond eyes gently closing and opening) and said so: "It's quite civilized. I like making friends." Although, he couldn't help wondering what kind of exciting things Sunpaw thought would happen. His wedge-shaped head shifted to follow Robinpaw's part of the conversation. His head tilted in surprise; he wouldn't have made Robinpaw out to be shy.
"His deputy became the leader. That's Smokestar up there," Glacierpaw said. "My mentor is our deputy"--his tail swished between Robinpaw and himself--"so he taught me all the other deputy's names and what they look like." His plume of a tail gestured to Pumafang, a huge dark chocolate tom at the base of Lionstar's pillar. In the shadow of the boulder, his eyes were the brightest thing about him.
