• By the end of the day and his first ever apprenticeship lesson, Glacierpaw's feet felt sawed off. His muscles ached, and his eyes burned. Even his whiskers hurt. Despite it all, he was the most excited he'd ever been and he couldn't wait to catch up with Timberfrost (or Pumafang proper) the next day. Trudging to the fresh-kill pile, the long-eared tom sighed as he looked over the selection of prey. It felt weird being able to pick something for himself for a change, and Glacierpaw spent several minutes just staring at the dead mice, birds, and squirrels. An orange tabby tom gave Glacierpaw a weird look before grabbing one for himself. Glacierpaw didn't even notice, but as his clanmate moved away from the pile, he figured he should get out of everyone else's way and just choose something. He picked a squirrel, long and bushy-tailed like himself, and walked to a secluded part of camp to eat. Slowly, he settled into position like a deer, first tucking his front legs down and bringing his hindquarters down afterward. He dropped the squirrel down in front and started chewing its underside. He did not spare even the tail once he was through with it. His chews became slower and slower as he neared the end. By the time he was finished with the meal, Glacierpaw's wedge-like head was nodding and bobbing. His pointed snout sank forward into his tucked paws and he slept. The half-moon was high in the sky when he awoke, shining brilliant silver light down through the canopy. Glacierpaw's eyes cracked open sluggishly, and suddenly he sucked in a breath, awake as if he'd been shocked to life. Then he remembered once again that he was an apprentice, and that he wasn't going to get in trouble for not being in the nursery with Mistylight. It was hard to break habits; the nursery and Mistylight's teachings were practically all Glacierpaw knew, which was why he was so excited to learn from someone else for a change. His gleaming green eyes looked up to the Silverpelt, the swathe of stars glinting watchfully over the Clans' heads, broken only by small wisps of cloud. They were the warriors of the past, Mistylight said. A soft breeze rustled the fallen leaves in a comforting lull that almost lured Glacierpaw back to sleep. However, he decided he wouldn't sleep through the night outside and made his way to the apprentice's den. He ducked through a hole in the huge log and trotted toward the branch where all the apprentices made their nests. Seeing the cats here--some young like him and some older, more experienced--made him recall Timberfrost's remark from earlier--that he should know his clanmates, all of them. Steeling himself, the lanky tomcat approached some cats. He recognized a few; they'd had been made apprentices the same time as him so maybe they'd like to be friends, but he nodded at all of his Clanmates. "Excuse me, hello. Ah..." His almond eyes shifted from one cat's face to the next, trying to read their receptiveness to his intrusion. "My name is Glacierpaw. Can we be friends?" He asked so politely, so awkwardly, that it made him seem foreign, like he hadn't been raised by TreeClan for moons, but it was due to Mistylight that he'd been denied socialization. According to her, Glacierpaw was better off monitoring her two she-kits and keeping them safe, not getting distracted with "making friends".

T he tang of fresh prey blood was still heavy on her tongue, having eaten rather late tonight due to an extended training session with Finchcloud. The calico apprentice had settled down for a spot of quick grooming before she finally collapsed into her nest for sleep. Her tongue drew in quick, gentle laps over her fur, the moonlight giving her ginger patches an eerie glow. Like a warrior straight from Silverpelt. She smelled the approach of a newcomer before she saw or heard him. Raising her bright green eyes at the rustle of paws against the crackling fallen leaves, her gaze settled on a mottled grey tom. The name came to her after a moment. Glacierpaw. He was the one named a 'paw alongside Appleshade's litter.
"Excuse me, hello. Ah..." Glacierpaw began, his eyes flying from face to face. He seemed a bundle of nerves at meeting his new denmates. "My name is Glacierpaw. Can we be friends?" Robinpaw felt a pang of sympathy at the awkwardness in the tom's anxious gaze. She was the first to purr a greeting. "Sure, Glacierpaw." Her rounded green eyes were friendly. "I'm Robinpaw. Welcome to your new den. We already made a nest for you," She gestured towards the bundle of moss. "But you can move it to wherever you like." She stood, her body firm and strong beneath her coat. She'd been training for many moons now, and looked more like a warrior than an apprentice. Her brother, who either did not speak up from his dark corner in the den or who simply wasn't present, had grown much larger than her. His milky brown coat and thick, broad shoulders made him look every bit his father's son. Robinpaw, despite inheriting her mother's calico markings, seemed more her own cat and was physically distinct from her closest kin.
Asterpaw 8 Moons || TreeClan || Apprentice Asterpaw's tail was a white snake that twirled in the darkness. His eyes followed it with fascination, as though it wasn't under his control and was a thing distinct and unique from him. His paw lashed out to pin it to the moss of his nest, where it wriggled beneath his paws. It was his appreciation for simple, small little entertainments that kept him from dying of boredom towards the end of the night before bed. His dreams were vivid and lively, full of images of the forest and the world that stretched beyond TreeClan's camp. Since his first venture out into the woods, Asterpaw had discovered a love for the world beyond the camp wall, the one he had never before been allowed to touch. The colours, the scents, the sensation of the breeze weaving freely between the trunks... with now camp wall to confine it, or to confine him. And his adventures with Foxfur, although confusing, had brought some sense of stability to the young tom's life. Stability that he'd always longed for.
He stood, his long legs phantom-like in the semi-darkness of the den, backing away to knead his nest back into shape with his awkward paws. Instead, he bumped into a furry shape behind him. Startled, his blue eyes landed on a silvery grey tom, the one who had been with him when Foxfur had first stepped awkwardly into Asterpaw's life. He was curious about this other tom, and perhaps wondering why he looked so nervous. Asterpaw sniffed him cautiously, his blue eyes icy and almost unsettling in their attentiveness. Who are you? He wondered, with no voice yet to give substance to his thoughts. His bewildered look was almost impolite in its bleak, expressionless curiosity. His whiskers twitched, and he waved his tail above his head in a quick greeting. His ears, still as stone, were tall upon his head, interested and intrigued at the newcomer. Had he been cast out from the nursery, too?

• Glacierpaw visibly relaxed as a she-cat spoke up with a kind voice and a gentle purr. She looked strong and older than he was. He tried to imagine himself in a few moons looking as cool as Robinpaw. Not with these stick legs... Glacierpaw saw cats milling in and out of camp all day. None of them had a figure like him, a cat with heron legs. The fur on his throat was stark white and puffed out, much like the base of his tail had been, but it flattened as the new apprentice became acclimated to the different smells of the apprentice den. He found that it was a lot like the nursery and smelled extremely different from the other scents he'd smelled at the border with Timberfrost. He wasn't quite experienced enough to pick out different threads of scents weaving through the air. "Thanks," he replied softly. It's nice to have my own bed The tall tom turned to the moss bundle Robinpaw indicated. He had no idea what the good spots were in this branch. Feeling it would be impolite to move and accidentally take someone else's spot in the process, Glacierpaw just decided to keep the nest where it was. The apprentices had been nice enough to get him started; he reminded himself to do that whenever the next ceremony was. He was about to leap into the nest when another tom bumped into him. Glacierpaw did not yield an inch or startle. The long-legged apprentice looked behind him, then between his legs to see bright blue eyes staring right at him. This cat did not speak, but seemed to be extending a greeting as well, so Glacierpaw didn't take offense to be bumped into. (He never took offense to anything, to be honest.) His huge ears pivoted forward, and his whiskers lifted in a smile. "Hello again, Asterpaw," Glacierpaw purred, remembering the tom from the ceremony. He glanced around for Birchpaw and Snowpaw briefly, but returned his attention on Asterpaw. "I think we're neighbors." He nodded to the moss pile and then leapt into it. "I have been training with Timberfrost all day. I fell asleep outside earlier. Is that allowed?" he asked Robinpaw. Kits hadn't been allowed to leave the nursery, so he assumed there were similar rules for apprentices.

S he could vividly remember stepping into the apprentice's den for the first time. It had been in the throws of Leaf-bare, when the frosts was thick upon the branches and her breath misted on the cold, frigid wind. Though the snowfall had lightened somewhat, the ground had still been coated in a thin film of ice and snow, slippery. She had slipped on her way into the den, and Ravenpaw had burst into a fit of chortling laughter while she shook herself in embarrassment. She remembered the cold of the den, biting and harsh. The apprentices had turned to huddling close together for warmth, shuddering despite the woven walls that sheltered them from the elements. She remembered the surge of gratitude she felt when she discovered that someone had kindly woven a layer of feathers into the sides of her nest, helping with trapping the warmth of her body while she slept.
The thought of Ravenpaw pierced her heart like a thorn, causing her to glance aside at the space his nest once occupied. Seeing that same gratitude in Glacierpaw's eyes now as he glanced at his nest helped chase that hollow ache from her mind, at least for the moment. It was good to put a smile on someone's face, and it certainly helped her feel less monotony to her day. "Thanks," He murmured, so slight and so quietly that she barely made it out. She smiled in response, stepping into her own nest and curling into a tight ball. She didn't quite feel like sleeping just yet, so kept her chin rested on the edge of her nest, watching the new apprentices settle in together. The den felt much more crowded now, but Robinpaw didn't mind in the slightest. She hated it when it was more on the empty side.
Her ears perked at the sound of scuffling paws, and her green eyes fixed on the two grey and white toms that awkwardly faced eachother in the darkness. "Hello again, Asterpaw," She heard Glacierpaw greet. "I think we're neighbours." Robinpaw smiled, but wondered if she should tell Glacierpaw that the gentle white apprentice couldn't hear a word he said. She waited for Snowpaw or Birchpaw to speak up, but they may have been occupied talking amongst themselves or even fast asleep because their voices never came. Robinpaw sleepily raised her head. "Asterpaw is deaf." She explained softly, her yawn revealing sharp, fierce fangs. "You can still try to talk to him, but always make sure he's looking at you when you do." She glanced warmly at the feathers packed into Asterpaw's new moss nest. She strongly believed that her visits to the nursery with fresh-kill and feathers sparked Asterpaw's love for decorative plumage, and she found it very sweet. "He loves feathers and birds. Give him one and he'll be your friend till the end of your days." She joked, amusement flashing in her bright green eyes.
Before she could close her eyes and surrender herself to dreamland, Glacierpaw's voice piped up once more. "I have been training with Timberfrost all day. I fell asleep outside earlier. Is that allowed?" He sounded nervous, as though he were afraid of doing something wrong. Robinpaw perked her ears in surprise. "There's no rules against sleeping outside in camp, no." She smiled. "But I wouldn't recommend it. Leaf-bare is coming and the nights are getting colder and colder. You're much better off in the warmth of the den. And leaving camp without your mentor is definitely frowned upon." An image of Demon flared in her thoughts, the lynx fixing his fierce golden glare on Robinpaw and Finchcloud as he charged viciously towards the patrol. Her green eyes were dark with seriousness when she said, "It's dangerous out in the forest alone."
Asterpaw 8 Moons || TreeClan || Apprentice The curious apprentice stared at Glacierpaw, intrigued by the tom's unusual appearance. He had a long face that tapered out into a pointed snout, and fur that was an odd blend of whites and greys as though two cats had been fused together accidentally. His eyes were a deep teal-green, much sharper than the soft leaf-green of Robinpaw's eyes and darker than his own blue hue. Glacierpaw's ears were large, too. He looked like a cat from another world, and Asterpaw regarded him with wide-eyed awe. The tom smiled at him, a bright smile that he could pick out even in the light of the den. Asterpaw genuinely couldn't help but smile back, a gesture that he enjoyed. Smiles were comforting, and pleasant.
The tom smelled strongly of the outside air, and Asterpaw wondered why. Had Glacierpaw been sleeping outside, in the woods? Would Foxfur make him do something like that? His blue eyes flashed in both worry and excitement. He could never predict what the ginger tom had in store for him next. That was when the mottled grey newcomer nodded to the moss beside Asterpaw, and leapt into the nest on gangly, nimble paws. The white tom was surprised, he had wondered why that new nest had been unoccupied, and it seemed that this cat was to be his new denmate. He joined him in the moss pile, settling down into a cosy position with a soft exhalation of breath. His outings with Foxfur were entirely taking all of his energy away.

• "OK, I will." Glacierpaw nodded firmly. His warm eyes appraised Asterpaw, and he wondered how they would learn to communicate. He figured that would be really important for when Asterpaw became a warrior of TreeClan. If they were ever paired together, he'd want to know what his teammate was saying. The ticked tabby tom shifted and kneaded his bed, releasing the calming scent of fresh grass and moss. His long head lifted up as he felt Asterpaw step into the moss pile too, but it was quickly thrown back onto the pile as Glacierpaw yawned and rolled over. His scoop-like ears faced Robinpaw as she reassured him that he wasn't going to get in trouble. "I like the sound of that anyway. A lot warmer," he said sleepily. He had a faint memory of the cold from when he was very young and hadn't been in a Clan yet. When he'd been tucked away into the warm nursery, everything felt safe. He liked the open air but making a habit of sleeping outside would have to wait until it was warmer. As for the danger of the forest... Glacierpaw fell asleep before he could ponder on it.
