48 Moons | RainClan | Tom | Senior Warrior Stormstar had a cough. Several cats in Ottersplash's den were ill. Swanfeather was back in camp again. By all accounts... He probably shouldn't be this happy. It was important to point out though, that he wasn't happy at all of the stress and sickness going around. If he paused to let it all sink in, he could scarcely see a good reason to get out of his nest in the morning.
That wasn't it.
He was happy because... Because he just was. Russethawk knew the cause of it, though; his mountain adventure with Ashflight had a long-lasting impact, and he felt closer to the she-cat because of it. With her on patrol, and his spirits showing no sign of dampening, he wanted to spread his good mood to Bravebird & Minnowsplash, trying to get a good infection going, for once.
It was as he walked out of camp to meet them, pleasantly thinking of the tabby-spotted and white she-cat, that he finally made an important discovery. I haven't felt this good since--since Lilystream. The ruddy warrior halted in his tracks, not feeling the grass under his paws or the sun on his back; instead, he felt something else. Surprise.
And then relief.
Thank StarClan, I thought I'd spend the rest of my days pining over Lilystream. A part of him had been worried his heart would never get over his long-enduring feelings for his kithood friend. That she had a mate, Ashfoot, and a litter of kits on the way, had been bittersweet. As agonizing as it was wonderful.
But this... this was great.
He liked Ashflight. But did she like him back? Yes, he insisted. Maybe? He could be charming and -- and funny. Did she think he was funny? StarClan he hoped so. She seemed like she'd had a nice time in the mountains with him... but what if she wanted to be 'just friends'? Russethawk's stomach flipped around like a banked fish. We should talk after she gets back from the patrol.
Couldn't hurt to just... ask her.
Unless she claws my ears off. He smiled into the open air, thinking of how he'd startled her. Hopefully this question wouldn't startle her too much.
You know who else deserves to feel this way? Bravebird. StarClan knew his best friend had seen too much stress and sadness in his lifetime. He was just now over his sickness. Bravebird deserved as much happiness as the next cat, if not more. You know what? Maybe this can turn into something... Identifying the two figures - one fluffy, one thin-furred - walking over, Russethawk waved his ruddy vulpine tail.
He trotted to meet them halfway, putting on a sincere tone of apology. "Hey, sorry. Rushwhisker asked me to help with Frozenpaw's training today. You two can go on ahead without me, I'll catch up as soon as we're done." Ha, nope.
Instead, he was gonna go make himself scarce for as long as he needed to.
Notes: xD aaaand he's gone.

Things were weird in RainClan’s camp right now. Leaving them flailing around like a fish out of water, the outbreak of greencough had crippled them immensely, and sheer desperation had driven Stormstar to do the unthinkable – find Swanfeather and invite her back onto clan territory. From watching loved ones fall ill alone, the air had been filled with so much tension and helplessness that sitting in one place too long felt suffocating. The additional presence of the clan’s most infamous former medicine cat made the strain practically tangible.
Unlike the vast majority of his clan mates, Bravebird could not bring himself to hate the she-cat with such fervor, and since his mother barely had enough time to breathe let alone talk with him, he found himself looking for every excuse to escape the overpowering unhappiness of camp. It wasn’t hard at all. With so many clan mates ill and others otherwise indisposed (read: guarding their captive medicine cat, though for whose protection he was not sure), they needed every able-bodied warrior and apprentice to catch whatever prey they could find and ensure that no other clan knew of the turmoil that threatened the clan once more. As he was wont to do, Russethawk had invited his recently recovered friend to go fishing with him and his cousin, Minnowsplash, and always willing to spend time with his brother in all but blood, the pale-furred warrior had leapt at the opportunity to catch up.
Sunhigh found him lingering just outside of the Wooded Cove, trying to look as if he was not as uncomfortable being there as he was. By design, he had carefully avoided spending too much time in the former Purist camp because of the unpleasant taste that entire chapter of his life left in his mouth, but he hadn’t been able to catch Russethawk after their short conversation this morning to convince him to change plans. No matter – that was in the past, and he would move on. It was only a place, and Russethawk and Minnowsplash would be here any moment to chase away the bad memories and guilt that had started to rise once more to the forefront of his mind. The latter arrived first, and he offered her a quiet smile and greeting. Despite their shared friend in the ruddy warrior who was now bordering on late, Bravebird did not know the she-cat nearly as well as one might have expected. Both of them were more on the quiet side, and when the trio got together, it was usually Russethawk who did all of the talking.
”Look who finally showed up,” Bravebird murmured under his breath, though not with any hostility, as he caught sight of his friend, and tail flicking through the air, he trotted forward to greet him. Russethawk looked good, he noted idly, the grin on his face growing at the prospect of spending an afternoon fishing like they had before everything had changed. He looked happy, happier than he had in a long time, and a warm fondness burst through his chest at that thought. With all the misery traveling around, it was nice to see someone so close to his heart so cheerful. As his friend drew closer, the warrior opened his mouth to ask what had him smiling so much, but Russethawk beat him to it, his hasty apology effectively silencing any playful question that Bravebird might have offered. Oh.
Blue eyes glanced across to Minnowsplash to see what she thought as their owner shoved away his disappointment. ”Alright then,” He mewed after a moment, offering up a small smile. ”We’ll be here, probably. Tell Rushwhisker and Frozenpaw we say hi!” i'm gonna make this place your home BlooRey DVD Fawn | home | background image

Minnowsplash had arrived to find Bravebird waiting near the Wooded Cove. She'd expected to see Russethawk, the particularly giddy tom having been the one to set this all up today. Wonder... What's keeping him... She thought to herself, padding forward on timid paws. Flicking her ear and returning Bravebird's greeting smile, Minnowsplash managed a gentle purr before settling down beside the older warrior wait patiently. Although Russethawk often invited the pair of them on these sorts of adventures, it was always her cousin doing the talking. She was content to sit back and listen, or agree pleasantly. Evidently, so was Bravebird because she didn't hear him say a whole lot either.
It came as no surprise then, that the pair sat in silence until the ruddy warrior strode forward. Minnowsplash straightened slightly, a pleasant smile slipping over her features at Russethawk's familiar face. Bravebird's whispered teasing earned a soft giggling, green eyes flicking toward him for a brief moment before Russethawk's voice snagged her attention. Her ears pricked forward in alarm, and her tail dropped fractionally. She was disappointed he would not be joining them, not that she would be spending time with Bravebird. He was a kind warrior, she could not deny that.
The lithe tom's voice met her ears, and a fawn-colored face turned to blink at him momentarily. Nodding her head softly, she gave the softest rumble of agreement. "F-For sure! We'll just... Hunt in the Wooded Cove?" It was phrased almost more like a question than a statement, her left ear flicking uncertainly as she looked to the older warrior for confirmation. She much preferred the Willow Stream, finding comfort in the long tendrils and privacy of the willow trees, but... It really was a terrible place to hunt.
Waving farewell to their mutual friend, the ditched duo began padding toward their new destination. Glancing down at her paws embarrassed, the long-coated she-cat willed up the courage to look toward Bravebird again. "Do you.. Have a p-preference as to where we hunt..? I... Only said Wooded Cove earlier because it was c-close... Might be nice to catch something other than f-fish for once too?" She inquired, hoping he'd be alright with her choice. |

After offering a smile and a friendly wave of the tail to Russethawk’s departing form, the pale-furred warrior turned and began padding alongside Minnowsplash, directing his steps toward the Cove. Although there was a part of him that faced the prospect of spending the afternoon there with the same enthusiasm he might afford cleaning out the elder’s den, he forced himself into ambivalence. It would not be good to let such hesitation beat him so easily – and the Wooded Cove was a good hunting spot; he wouldn’t be able to avoid it forever, so he might as well get everything out of his system now. Mentally, he nodded in approval. The logic made sense.
But that didn’t stop his heart from feeling like it was marching into battle.
So it was when the long-furred she-cat gave him a chance out that he paused, wondering if he should indulge his weakness. Blue eyes glanced toward his companion as his ears flicked. He deliberated. It would be so easy to ask her to hunt somewhere else. While they might not have been the closest, Bravebird had been around Minnowsplash long enough to know that she was an agreeable cat who would go along with anything he might say. A little like himself, if he was honest, though he supposed that to hang around with the bundle of energy that was Russethawk as long as both of them had, one had to have some flexibility. Still, if he mentioned any hesitation about the Wooded Cove, he could avoid it with no problem; however, doing so seemed more than a little cowardly. What type of warrior was he if he couldn’t even face that which made him uncomfortable? ”Not really,” He answered finally, shrugging as he sidestepped the matter entirely and shoved the tiny bit of disappointment he felt toward himself away. ”The Wooded Cove works, but if you would rather head somewhere else, then I’m perfectly fine with it.”
Silence fell again as they walked toward their destination, and in his absence, Bravebird realized just how much Russethawk spoke for the two of them. Perhaps it was another requirement for surviving their mutual friend, he found himself musing idly, but both he and Minnowsplash had quieter dispositions. While others stood in the spotlight, they took satisfaction out of sitting in the shadows and watching their friends shine. But that meant that, given the amount of time that he had spent with her, the warrior knew surprisingly little about his clan mate. Eyes narrowed slightly at the ground as the thought hit home, and he found himself trying to recall everything he knew about the she-cat padding quietly by his side. She was Russethawk’s cousin and younger than both of them by a few moons. She was the daughter of Razorstar and Roselight and had a sister and a brother. And altogether, she was a nice cat.
Bravebird caught himself frowning a little. That was rather… uninspiring. Did he really only know such general knowledge about one of Russethawk’s closest friends? He liked to think of himself as more open and friendly than that, but perhaps walking in the other tom’s shadow had done more harm than good. Sitting back and letting him to the talking and charming came far more easily to him than trying to do so himself; indeed, he met most of the cats with whom he spoke through Russethawk, and even then, it was evident that he really only knew some of them in relation to his friend. Perhaps it was time to fix that. After a moment’s hesitation and deliberation over how to best break the silence, he made the observation that, ”It’s really quiet without Russethawk here, isn’t it.” i'm gonna make this place your home Fawn BlooRey DVD | home | background image

Minnowsplash, What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales, in comparison to what lies inside you Ralph Waldo Emerson Minnowsplash purred softly, a sound of contentment as Bravebird indicated he had no qualms with hunting at the Wooded Cove. There was a moment where she thought he might disagree, but the moment had swept by like the waters of the river. The long-furred fawn she-cat fell into step easily with the older tom, her off-green eyes admiring their surroundings as they padded along. Her paw steps were soft, unhurried as she followed a familiar path. There was nothing particularly... Interesting about the she-cat's gait. There was no bounce to her step, no confidence in her movements.
In fact, there was only a strange sort of awe. Yes, she had seen the cruelty of the world, and she'd had someone special to her taken far too quickly. Despite it all, she still saw beauty in her surroundings, and it showed in the soft smile decorating her features as her eyes roved. She was comfortable in this silence, so used to being quiet around Bravebird she barely noticed the complete lack of any type of interaction. Normally, Russethawk filled the silence. With the two of them? All there was was the distant murmur of the river and the sounds of soft paw steps.
That is, until Bravebird spoke. Her ears pricked, mildly startled at the suddenness of his voice, though she was quite happy to hold a conversation. Now that her attention had been brought to the lack of voices? She didn't very much want to settle back into the quiet from before. With a soft laugh upon hearing Bravebird remark on the silence between them, the she-cat's pace slowed. Her tail flicked contently behind her, Minnowsplash a little surprised to realize she felt comfortable in Bravebird's presence, despite not knowing an awful lot about him. Probably... Thank R-Russethawk for that one. She thought to herself.
"I-It really is! Russethawk... S-Sure knows how to fill the a-air with words, d-doesn't he?" She purred fondly. A sudden thought flashed through her mind, ears tipping back and a sheepish look crossing her features. "I.. H-Hope I didn't make you unc-comfortable? I guess I'm just... Not used to one-on-one. Not... The best convers-sationalist. If you'd like, we c-can... Go back and g-get a third member? That way you m-might not... Feel so alone around m-me..?" Her voice trailed off softly, the she-cat having stopped moving forward in case Bravebird decided he wanted to go back after all.
Kneading the ground awkwardly with her paw, Minnowsplash spared him another glance, an apology clear on her features. You... R-Really are just terrible company, aren't you Minnowsplash? RainClan, She-Cat, 24 Moons ~420 words Phoenix Minnow, you poor pathetic girl XD

”He sure does.” Fondness warmed his heart and brought a small smile to his lips as he pictured his old friend, who was probably talking Rushwhisker’s ears off right about now. The other tom seemed to have been gifted with the ability to pull words out of thin air and weave sentences out of silence, and not without a little envy, Bravebird could only watch in something like awe. Even after many seasons of idle observations, he had no idea how the older warrior managed it. But his thoughts did not linger long on his friend’s conversational prowess, for suddenly the she-cat with whom he had been keeping pace slowed to a halt. Blue eyes glanced around ahead of them, wondering what could have prompted such a change, before looking back at her with a question in their depths.
Even as he opened his mouth to voice his inquiry, however, she beat him to it, and with every word, he could feel his heart sinking a little lower with concern. ”Oh, no, no,” He heard himself saying quickly, hastening to reassure her. Wide blue eyes searched for green only to find them directed at her paws. ”It’s not that at all. I don’t mind spending time with you, Minnowsplash. You’re perfectly good company.” Well, she was perfectly good company as far as walking next to each other in near-complete silence was worth, but Bravebird never minded the company of cats who, like himself, were less inclined to speak. There was something peaceful and pleasant about a comfortable silence. In pointing it out, he had hoped to start a nice conversation with the long-furred she-cat, but much to his distress, this one was not turning out as planned.
Had she really thought that he was subtly expressing an aversion to her company? The possibility of that interpretation of his words hadn’t even crossed his mind, and even as he mentally played back what he said, he was hard pressed to find anything that might have garnered that response. Was he missing something? Bravebird supposed it was possible that he had implied something of that nature unintentionally, as he had been striking around randomly for a topic of conversation. Or perhaps she wants to get the third cat and was too polite to ask? If they hadn’t already stopped moving forward, he might have stopped there as the thought struck him. Maybe that was it. He could feel a bubbling embarrassment warming up his fur, and it was his turn to glance away awkwardly. His ears flattened a little as he realized just how demoralizing it was to cause discomfort simply by being there. But Minnowsplash had offered him the opportunity, so it was only fair that, if his company made her uncomfortable, he do the same. ”Er – I mean,” he started again, ”If you want to go back and get a third member, I don’t mind turning around.” i'm gonna make this place your home Fawn BlooRey DVD | home | background image

Minnowsplash, What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales, in comparison to what lies inside you Ralph Waldo Emerson The awkward tension in her shoulders ebbed as Bravebird reassured her he'd not meant anything of the sort. In fact, he went as far as to say she was good company. Maybe he'd just said that to be polite but... It brought a gentle plume of embarrassed happiness to her chest. She peeked up at him shyly, relief apparent behind her gentle gaze as she slowly organized her paws to move forward again. Her ears tipped back slightly, now focused on worrying she'd offended him by suggesting he made her think she was bad company. No one had made her think that, she just...
Well, she just thought that on a pretty regular basis.
Poking the ground distractedly with her paw, she opened her jaws in hopes of explaining the situation only to have Bravebird beat her to the metaphorical fish. Blinking at him with wide green eyes and her jaw still partially opened, her mind took a moment to properly filter through his words, considering she'd been thinking about something else entirely only moments before. Now he thought that she thought he was bad company. O-Oh S-StarClan, w-what a mess! Y-You've really done it n-now!
With the words she wanted to say trapped on her tongue and the long-furred she-cat very much tongue tied, Minnowsplash settled for vigorously shaking her head. "N-No!" She squeaked, barely finding the right pathways to form the words. "I l-like you - spending t-time with you. A-At least... I th-think..? Russeth-hawk is just normally a-around, sort of... G-Get used to him t-talking... But that doesn't mean I d-don't want to spend time w-with you? I think you're g-good company too, s-sometimes I feel l-like other cats... W-Well, judge me f-for being so... Me. But.. N-Not you, I w-was quiet but didn't f-feel like you... I mean, I just..." She snapped her jaws shut, ducking her head and fighting the urge to hide her muzzle beneath her fore paws.
"O-Oh my, w-what a kerfuffle th-this is..." She murmured, mostly to herself though it was more than loud enough for Bravebird to have heard her clearly. With a soft shiver caused by the anxiety rippling through her veins, Minnowsplash took a shaky breath before meowing more softly. "I d-don't want to g-go back to get anyone else, p-promise. You're p-perfect." A timid, but kindhearted smile pulled at the corners of her mouth, her pelt heating up slightly beneath the weight of her embarrassment. Suddenly, it was her turn to shake her head and take a step back. Words of reassurance tumbled from her mouth like brightly colored leaves falling from the trees as cold winds began to return to the valley, and with every passing sentence, his uncomfortable embarrassment turned to a more flattered embarrassment. He couldn’t stop the small grin that turned the corners of his lips upward any more than he could prevent his heart from feeling so light that it could fly. His fears has been as unfounded as hers, and though they had made a bit of a mess getting there, everything turned out alright in the end. Better than alright, really, for as little as they knew about each other despite the amount of time they had spent in each other’s company, it seemed as though she was just as willing as he to take advantage of this opportunity to talk.
Indeed, well aware of what it was like to stand on the fringes of the clan, Bravebird never tried to turn a critical eye on any of his clan mates, and he always appreciated those who did the same. No cat deserved to be ostracized without good reason, especially if the inclination to do so was born of a feature that they could not help – and that policy was exactly why the Civil War had hit him so hard. It had made him choose between his family and what he stood for, and though he would never admit it, depending on the day, he had sometimes found himself regretting that decision. Just thinking about the darkest chapter of his story brought new life to old wounds, and with the aversion of a typical cat to water, he steered his thoughts away and down a different, much more pleasant path, one about—
Minnowsplash caught his attention again with her murmured words, and grinning, he flicked an ear before offering a sound of agreement. But it was her next words that had him pausing, blue eyes wide even as the simmering heat warming his chest became a full-fledged fire. ”I—Er—Thanks?” It came out as more of a question than anything else as he was caught totally off guard by her compliment. Completely flustered and entirely unsure what to do about it, he ducked his head and gave his chest fur a short, unnecessarily lick as he tried to sort through the jumble that had formed when every train of thought had come to an abrupt and unforeseen stop. Did she meant it like—No, but of course not, she was just being nice because she was a nice cat and nice cats said nice things like that. In any event, they barely knew each other so it was not like that.
”I mean, thanks, Minnowsplash,” Bravebird reiterated with more warmth, once he had gathered his thoughts and realized that his reaction had perhaps been slightly underwhelming. Blue eyes rose from his paws to see a hesitant – but nevertheless, there – smile on her lips, and his next words fell from his mouth before he even realized it: ”I can’t think of another cat I would want here either.” There was a pause, in which he was just as surprised as he imagined she was, and then he couldn’t hold in the embarrassment any longer. What had they gotten themselves into? Despite all his efforts to hold it back, an awkward chuckle escaped him and then another. It wasn’t long before he was trying – and failing – to hold back quiet laughter. ”Quite a kerfuffle indeed,” He managed by way of explanation. i'm gonna make this place your home BlooRey DVD Fawn | home | background image

Minnowsplash, What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales, in comparison to what lies inside you Ralph Waldo Emerson Fawn-colored paws shuffled awkwardly as Bravebird blinked at her in what she could only call confused embarrassment. Had she said something wrong? Her mind churned, desperately filtering through what she'd said in hopes of finding whatever it was she had to say to fix this. But she came up blank. All she'd said was that he was perfect company. That was a compliment, wasn't it? She'd certainly meant for it to be. What if there was some hidden meaning behind her words? Had he, once again, pulled some secondary meaning from what she'd said? O-Oh S-StarClan, why d-does this always h-happen to me? She groaned inwardly.
Before she could stammer out some form of apology for this mysterious mistake of hers, Bravebird cut back in, sounding a lot more certain of himself, and a lot less like she'd just offended his grandmother's coat color. Then it was her turn to be bathed in embarrassment. With her ears drooping sheepishly, the RainClan warrioress kneaded the ground with her paw once more but managed to hold his gaze. The words to reply to him were lost to her, the only thing she could think of doing being blinking. And that hardly required much thought.
And then he was laughing. Her ears snapped up at the sound, green eyes widening as her own, nervous giggle emerged. It began as a soft hiccup, Razorstar's daughter completely unaware of what was happening or why her body was trying to laugh. But Bravebird's chuckle, as uncertain and awkward as it may have been, was contagious. Ducking to shield her muzzle beneath a fore paw, Minnowsplash was reduced to a giggling bundle of fur, gasping for breath every now and again when she realized she wasn't getting enough air. Bravebird's explanation didn't help in controlling the bubbling laughter, and it was several heartbeats before Minnowsplash could think again.
Breathing in short gasps as the fit of laughter began to subside, the RainClan warrioress met his eyes once more, hers brimmed with a lightheartedness that seemed to make them more vibrant than usual. "I-If we don't start m-moving, we'll never m-make it to the W-Wooded Cove, and we'll n-never manage to even s-start hunting." She managed, collecting her paws beneath her once more (when in StarClan's name had she sunk to her belly??). "If we.. Don't e-even try, R-Russethawk will n-never trust us to do a-anything again." She purred, trying to imagine explaining to their friend that they hadn't even made it to the Wooded Cove.
The sudden urge to thank him washed over her, her paws feeling lighter than she could remember in a long time. Laughing, truly laughing, was not something she'd done for a few moons now. Her gratitude was nearly overwhelming, but she held her jaw shut, if only to avoid another kerfuffle surrounding explaining to him why on earth she was thanking him out of the blue. Hunting. Right, they were here to hunt. Meeting her words with a sheepish grin – ”And he’d never let us hear the end of it either” – he stood and fell into step beside her as they started off once more. As they were practically on the edge of the cove, the walk itself into the area was not long at all, and before he knew it, they had gone their separate ways. It was strange. In the sudden silence of the solitude, he felt her absence a little more, and he couldn’t help but turn and glance back in her direction even as he disappeared into the undergrowth. Admittedly, he had been a little disappointed when Russethawk had bowed out on them, and though he didn’t have anything against Minnowsplash, he had been a little concerned at the prospect of spending the afternoon just with her. She always struck him as a nice cat (and in hindsight, he never should have doubted his brother’s choice of friends), but what if, upon actually talking to her, he had realized that he not only didn’t know her but also didn’t care to? Their relationship as fellow planets orbiting around Russethawk was a pleasant coexistence, and he could not deny the relief he felt that upon learning that everything would stay that way.
A white paw stepped on a twig, and the loud snap jolted him from his thoughts. Something like embarrassment flooded him as he realized that he had been casually strolling through the woods, lost in thought, instead of truly putting any effort into catching prey. Blue eyes glanced around as his tail flicked, and he refocused his thoughts. He really should try to catch something, though chances were that unfortunate misstep had chased away any prey in the area. Bravebird scented the air, catching the faint traces of mouse and rabbit, but they were long gone. Hmm. Frowning slightly and feeling just a little bit guilty about giving up so easily (really, he should have tried harder, but he would much rather enjoy the company of his new friend than do anything productive), the warrior turned and retraced his steps. Perhaps, if he remembered, he could catch a fish on the way back.
Upon seeing the she-cat emerge from a short distance away, he stepped toward her and asked lightly, ”Any luck?” Perhaps she had done better than him; he certainly hoped that she had done better than him, because going out on a hunting patrol and returning empty-pawed would earn them more than a few sideways glances. ”I didn’t find anything myself. We probably scared everything away with our laughter – not that I would give that up for anything.” He grinned at her. ”Maybe we can bring back some fish later?”

Minnowsplash, What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales, in comparison to what lies inside you Ralph Waldo Emerson She purred her agreement, easily falling into step beside him as they wandered the remainder of the journey to the Wooded Cove. A pleasant quiet enveloped the pair, until they decided to part ways to more effectively hunt. With a wave of her tail, Minnowsplash wandered off toward the pools in the Cove. She knew that medicine cats often searched the pool edges for herbs, and she thought that perhaps the sweet smelling herbs would attract the attention of prey animals. Green eyes roamed the area, taking in the sights and enjoying the beauty of the world once more.
It was peaceful in the Wooded Cove. So peaceful, she nearly forgot what she'd come here to do in the first place. Dragging her mind back to thoughts of hunting, Minnowsplash parted her jaws in search of prey. Conscious to step lightly to avoid scaring anything off, she skirted along the edge of the pool in search of anything to stalk. Movement somewhere up ahead had her slowing down. Lowering herself into a crouch, she weaved between stalks of herbs as she inched closer, craning her neck to see what it was. Her sense of smell was muddled thanks to the herbs, something she'd failed to consider much to her dismay.
Without warning, a small gray figure darted out from beneath something almost sickly sweet, unexpected enough to startle the young warrior. Instead of instinctively sprinting after it, she back pedaled, bouncing up on her hind legs in alarm only to have one of her hind paws slide straight off the slick edge of the pool, effectively sending her crashing into the pool with a muffled squeak. The water crashed all around her, cool from being hidden in the shade as it was. Disoriented from the slip, Minnowsplash's paws flailed uselessly at the water surrounding her.
Until she recalled she was a RainClan cat, with the ability to swim. Flipping herself right side up in the water, the fawn-colored she-cat quickly pushed herself back to the surface, nose breaking through the water as she inhaled a much-needed breath. Thoroughly embarrassed despite being alone, she paddled back to the pool's edge and clambered out, doing her best not to crush any of the herbs growing nearby. Shaking out her water-soaked pelted, she found herself thanking StarClan for her RainClan upbringing. Ears flattened with lingering embarrassment she directed herself away from the pools.
She'd definitely scared off anything nearby now.
Her ears shot up as a voice called out to her, momentary dread sinking into her chest. H-He's going t-to think I'm r-ridiculous. Briefly contemplating diving back into the undergrowth and hoping he hadn't seen her (which was silly, considering he'd asked her a question), she forced her ears to unglue themselves from her skull and turned to face him sheepishly. Though some of her fur had begun drying, her belly fur was still heavy with water, and her whiskers managed to drip occasionally, despite her previous attempt and shaking the water off.
"U-Uh... N-No, no luck from m-me... But I... D-Did conf-firm that... The pools are s-still cold? A-And wet." Trying her best to turn her mishap into a joke, she shuffled her fore paws awkwardly, peeking up at him as though expecting something akin to disappointment. "Fishing is.. P-Probably a g-good idea. Considering we b-both still ended up e-empty pawed." RainClan, She-Cat, 24 Moons ~560 words Phoenix Impromptu swim XD

Blue eyes narrowed slightly in confusion, and as he approached her, he confirmed what he thought he had seen from farther away. Did—Did you fall in? He wanted to ask, but even if he hadn’t already drawn that conclusion, she confirmed it a moment later. A small, strangled snort escaped before he abruptly clamped his jaws shut, fighting the laughter that threatened to bubble up out of him. The poor she-cat seemed mortified enough already, and because he wasn’t entirely sure if she was the type of cat who could laugh at herself, he was reluctant to risk adding to that humiliation. However, the warrior did have to turn away, as he was unable to prevent the smile that ghosted across his horrible attempt at keeping a straight face. When he could trust himself to look at her again, he glanced across at her, only to see a lone water droplet fall dejectedly from one of her whiskers. Another strangled sound escaped him, choked off at the end as he turned the noise into a clearing of his throat.
Once he managed to compose himself, he had the chance to really look at her. She peered up at him with her ears flattened once more, shrinking back as if expecting a harsh rebuke. His amusement fled. ”You know,” He began, keeping his tone light as he stepped forward with bright eyes. ”You could’ve just told me if you wanted to swim instead of hunt. I would’ve joined you. Maybe a nice dip in the pool is just what we need on a warm day like today.” But even as he said that, he could recall with vivid clarity just how unpleasant an unexpected swim was. Stepping into the water prepared to get wet as he did every morning when he left camp was one thing, but memories of that instinctive bolt of fear that came with suddenly being submerged had him eternally grateful that he hadn’t fallen in himself. Bravebird’s fur wasn’t even anywhere as long as hers either; it could take the rest of the afternoon for her to stop dripping entirely.
”Since we won’t end up catching anything here, maybe we could just talk instead, while you dry off a little?” Flicking his tail, he stepped toward a sunny patch of grass and gestured for her to join him, hoping that the heat of the sun would chase away any lingering chill from the water. A glance toward the far end of the pool showed him the streak of freshly exposed dirt that was likely left by her paws as they slid down the short incline, and he couldn’t help the jolt of worry that shot through his heart. ”You’re okay though, right?’ During the time he had spent visiting his mother as a younger cat, he had seen many sprained paws and injured pads from missteps such as these, and he didn’t want her to be walking around in pain.

Minnowsplash, What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales, in comparison to what lies inside you Ralph Waldo Emerson Her pelt heated up in embarrassment, and yet... His laughter seemed genuine, and not at all accusatory, so she didn't actually mind. Shuffling her fore paw against the ground, she bit her tongue to quell the laughter threatening to bubble in her throat, afraid the sound would be too nervous and uncertain. Minnowsplash didn't want him thinking that she was offended by his laughter, and feared the quaver in her throat would give him the wrong idea. And so, she stared at her paws until Bravebird evidently felt he had enough of his composure back to face her once more.
And then that pesky drip of water she'd felt weighing down one of her right whiskers finally toppled to the ground, the pale tom devolving into a stifled snort of laughter once more. Eventually, he spoke, and the gentleness of his voice had her ears pricking up off her skull and pushing toward him, as though desperately craning to hear what he had to say. The sheepish smile curved into something more genuine, the tawny she-cat stepping hesitantly after him as he pointed toward a potential aimless path unfolding before them.
Stepping high a pawful of times to shake the water from her leg fur, she bounded forward in something that could only be labelled excitement. The warm rays on her pelt provided near-immediate relief, the RainClan warrioress emitting a content purr as she stretched herself in the pleasant warmth. "I... I would l-like that a l-lot." She told him, the thought of walking and just talking as they had been previously much more appealing to her. Especially now that her tail fur was dripping water as consistently as an angry rain cloud. Doing her best to discreetly flick some of those very droplets to the side somewhere, her green eyes blinked at his next question.
She followed his gaze, noticing the disturbed earth near the pool's edge. Wincing and desperately hoping she hadn't caused too much damage for the medicine cats' sake, Minnowsplash tapped the ground with her paw, a show of timid embarrassment. His concern was sweet, the she-cat feeling as though he genuinely cared for her well-being like Russethawk did. "N-No, I m-mean y-yes! N-No, as in I'm n-not hurt... Y-Yes I am o-okay." She stammered awkwardly, fighting that urge to hide her muzzle beneath her paws once more.
Steadying her breath, she looked up at him with a shy smile. "O-Only the s-small amount of d-dignity I have w-was hurt. I'm o-okay, thank you for.. For a-asking." She meant to give him a friendly flick to his shoulder with her tail, but she momentarily failed to recall her current state. What actually occurred was a spattering of water droplets, rivaling the trail left behind by a leaping fish, promptly attacking Bravebird. With a startled "E-Eep!", Minnowsplash felt her pelt heat up again. "S-Sorry! O-Oh StarClan, I d-didn't m-mean to get you wet!" Almost bouncing between her two fore paws, Minnoswplash scrambled for something to do, something to say to make it better.
Groaning softly, she glanced at him apologetically. "I.. D-Don't th-think k-kerfuffle q-quite covers this a-anymore... We sh-should... Start moving, s-so I don't do something s-silly again." She mewed, her statement ended with a little exasperated laugh directed toward herself. RainClan, She-Cat, 24 Moons ~500 words Phoenix Oops XD
