Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." It had all escalated so quickly. First, it was an unending rain. Then, the waters began to rise. Now, the camp was flooding and cats were running frantically about to help each other. They were all so afraid, and their yowling reverberated all around the camp. The younger cats were the most afraid, cats that probably hadn't been listening too carefully to Silverstar's directions due to their shock. Emberlight ran over to a small group of apprentices. "Find your parents and go to Lilygleam, she is swimming to safety." As they scampered off, Emberlight's gaze focused in on the Elder's Den, which no warriors were going to yet. That was a problem that needed to be fixed before Rainclan lost all of its elders.
It could not be done alone. Emberlight looked around, watching as warriors grabbed nests from the nursery and pushed them through the water, watching as warriors aided expecting queens, watching as Silverstar stopped Dewfrost from frantically collecting her herbs. Everyone seemed like they had a task.
A familiar silver tabby caught his eye, and Emberlight breathed a sigh of relief. Ferngaze. She was an incredibly competent warrior who was very able to help the elders swim to safety. "Ferngaze," he called. "Help me with the elders!"

Ferngaze of RainClan It was shaping up to be a horrible day; the heavy fall of rain had been what had woken Ferngaze, the noise of it filling her ears. Dripping water spotted her pelt, the deluge mostly deflected except for a few openings in the overarching ferns and bracken. Shifting away from the stem that kept leaking, Ferngaze attempted to settle back into her nest.
A moment later, however, Silverstar's voice was ringing out over the camp, raised above the pounding rain, and in a moment the camp traded peace for some sort of organized panic; Ferngaze's eyes flashed toward the medicine cats' den, watching Dewfrost try to grab what herbs she could before giving up, a look of defeat in her eyes as other warriors moved in to guide her away, and then she heard her name called. Blue eyes turned toward Emberlight, tail lifting to show she'd heard as she started to splash her way toward him. Troutfur, standing just outside the elders' den, was soaked, fur plastered to his body by the rain, and he was grumbling under his breath. "You two ought to worry more about those kits than me," he told them both.
"The kits are being taken care of. You're important too," Ferngaze replied, pressing her shoulder to the elder's. She nodded over at the ginger tom, letting Troutfur set the pace and staying at his side. She'd never seen the water rise like this- and it was doing so quickly. Were they going to lose their camp entirely? Ahead, a line of RainClan cats, Lilygleam just visible in the lead, was swimming to safety; a few nests were being pushed along by warriors and queens, guided over the water. She glanced again at Troutfur, who took a breath and then waded in. Ferngaze took a quick glance back, noticing that Silverstar was still there, making sure the camp was fully evacuated, before turning her attention back to the elder and Emberlight. Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." Troutfur's leg was impairing his speed, but as the three cats made their way into the river to swim upwards, his leg no longer became a problem. Even a Rainclan elder was a good swimmer. It was in their blood.
Emberlight felt a surge of pride for Troutfur as he continued to swim. While he still needed the help of the Abyssinian tom and the silver tabby she-cat, he was doing remarkably well. "You're doing great. Just keep swimming." Looking next to Ferngaze, Emberlight flashed her a slightly concerned look. They were approaching a spot in the river that was known to be rougher, especially during rainfall as heavy as this. Looking ahead, he saw that a few cats had already sunk and were being pulled out of the water by warriors. This was going to be a rough patch.
"Stay vigilant," he warned, meaning it more for Ferngaze, but trying not to worry Troutfur too much. This swim was about to get difficult.

Ferngaze of RainClan Ferngaze wasn't too far behind the toms as she entered the river, but the strong flow was instantly noticeable and she could tell at a glance that she wasn't going to be able to fight it and swim straight. Instead she focused on simply getting across and let the current push her downstream. Keeping her head above water was the thing to worry about most- drowning was a real concern. Ahead, several yowls of alarm rang out, but Ferngaze couldn't see what was happening... StarClan protect them! she prayed, and met the ginger tom's glance with worry in her own eyes.
Troutfur was still swimming strongly, determination clear in his expression. Pleased that he wasn't slowing down just yet, Ferngaze let herself fall into a rhythm, moving each of her paws in a steady beat and splitting her attention between Troutfur and the spine of the cat in front of her. And then a sense of danger swept over her and she froze, briefly dipping under the water before popping back up and craning her head to look behind her. A tree, possibly one uprooted by the flood, was rushing toward the three and she squeaked.
"Look out- dive!" she yowled, and sucked in a breath to plunge downward. Something sharp scraped over her flank and the shadow of the tree passed overhead; still submerged, she glanced around to look for Emberlight and Troutfur. STEADY AS THE RIVER RUNS

Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." At Ferngaze's call, Emberlight reacted as quickly as he could, slamming his paw on Troutfur's side to get the elder to dive down with him to avoid the tree. Waiting until Troutfur was under, Emberlight took a gulp of air and dove down as quickly as possible, just barely avoiding the rushing tree.
After the tree passed, Emberlight briefly closed his eyes in relief and felt his load lighten. Literally. Troutfur was no longer pressed up against him.
Opening his eyes, the ginger tom looked around frantically, but the elder was nowhere to be seen. Instead, he locked eyes with Ferngaze's piercing blue stare. He jerked his head up, motioning towards the surface - Troutfur must have already ascended, swimming somewhere on the surface.
Swimming up, Emberlight broke through the surface of the water and took a few deeps breaths. Troutfur was not peacefully swimming around. Instead, he was yowling for help and getting farther away.
It didn't take long for Emberlight's searching eyes to find Troutfur, his neck caught in a forked branch, gasping for air yet yowling at the same time. He had to be in a lot of pain. The two warriors needed to act quickly. Already swimming towards the tree, Emberlight began to speak.
"Ferngaze, we need to catch up to that tree and dislodge him. We need to move faster than the tree is so that we can push him out of that forked branch." If anyone could do it, these two determined warriors could. As they neared the tree, Emberlight began to swim more and more quickly, bracing himself to ram into Troutfur and get him out of harm's way. "Let's do this!"
Emberlight dove once again under the water and swam as fast as he could, heading towards Troutfur's flailing and weakening body. This had to work.

Ferngaze of RainClan Fear flooded through the young she-cat as she saw only Emberlight. Troutfur? she asked silently, eyes widening at him, and at his instruction to surface again she did so. As soon as the water cleared from her ears, she heard the elder's calls, and at the sight of him caught in the branch of the tree she gasped. The ginger tom was quick to come up with a plan, and with no better option that she could think of, Ferngaze nodded her agreement.
Emberlight dove under again and Ferngaze joined him, paws churning as hard as she could to carry her after the tree. Only when she had to did she surface to breathe, and relief chased the worry as she noticed they were gaining. Emberlight was swimming hard, intending to knock loose the tom, and Ferngaze did her best to match his speed, ready to grab Troutfur once he was free. STEADY AS THE RIVER RUNS

Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." Ferngaze was swimming at the same pace as Emberlight. Good.
The current of the water was strong, pushing the two Rainclan warriors along towards the tree. Paired with their own swift swimming abilities, Emberlight and Ferngaze were going much faster than any normal swimmer. If this wasn't such a dire situation, Emberlight would have rather enjoyed this moment of freedom and speed.
But as for now, he had a job to do. And by Starclan, he would do it well He couldn't let someone else die on his watch, slipping through his grasp like the rest of his family once had.
With one final push, Emberlight surged towards Troutfur, putting all of his force into dislodging the elder from the forked branch that was strangling him. As he made contact with Troutfur, the ginger warrior felt the tom's body respond to the force. The poor elder would probably be terribly sore after this ordeal.
Troutfur, with a yelp, came loose of the branch, ready to be caught by Ferngaze, who had hopefully swum to the other side. Emberlight swam to the surface to catch a breath of air and see if the rescue mission had been successful.

Ferngaze of RainClan While Emberlight lined himself to use his own body to dislodge Troutfur, Ferngaze put herself into place to catch him when he was freed. The moment that the elder's body slipped loose, Ferngaze was lunging to catch him; she tried to be gentle as possible, snagging his pelt with her claws before gripping his scruff and hauling him back to the surface. He was heavy, but she was strong and the water made him light enough... she couldn't help her mind flitting back to Crowblaze, wishing it had been this easy with him. Well, she could save Troutfur, at least, and the relief that swept through her as she brought him to the surface, listening to him drag in a breath of air, was all the reward she needed.
Emberlight's ginger head wasn't far away, letting her know he'd made it too. "I can swim!" Troutfur insisted, and Ferngaze let him go, staying close beside him as he turned toward the bank. She could feel her legs burning and exhaustion was felt keenly, but she couldn't stop- not until she was on solid ground again. She was so used to swimming being an easy thing- maybe, when it all calmed down, she'd remind herself that it wasn't like this usually. At least she was still here. "Almost there," she spoke, assuring herself as well as the elder that their swim was nearly over. "Still with us, Emberlight?" STEADY AS THE RIVER RUNS

Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." Upon seeing that Ferngaze had gotten a hold of Troutfur, Emberlight breathed a sigh of relief. The older cats of RainClan were few, and Emberlight had not been prepared to lose someone else. Not today.
The ginger tom noted as Troutfur insisted he swim on his own and couldn't help but omit a slight chuckle. Troutfur, even though nearly dying, was still full of pride. In a way it was rather refreshing.
"Don't worry about me, I'm right behind the two of you," he called in response to Ferngaze's question. In fact, he could see land steadily approaching. At the sight of the near-end of their journey, Emberlight felt exhaustion creeping throughout his body. Supporting and then saving Troutfur had taken more of a toll on the small warrior than he had expected.
The moons are slowly starting to catch up to me.
But the warrior kept pushing. Pushing and pushing until he felt his front paws sink into sandy banks. They had finally made it, somehow all in one piece. Looking to Ferngaze and Troutfur, Emberlight let out a reassuring purr.
"That was some great swimming, Troutfur. You've still got it." To Ferngaze, Emberlight adopted a slightly more serious tone, his volume lowering. "We saved a life today. Your father will be so proud."
