Leafbare 23 The sun is visible behind clouds but its rays can't break through, it is cold and dreary.
"Come on Night! Lets go hunting together!" Bright yellow eyes lifted from the ground, looking ahead at a bright figure. There was a young cat, a she-cat to be specific, who jumped forward into sight, landing and standing straight up, not turning her body, but turning her head to face the one looking. With the sun shining bright behind her and the rays beating down on her fur, no one couldn't say that she was gorgeous. Her beautiful white pelt dappled with light brown and gray spots, her long tail, those long legs, that slender and elegant frame, her bright blue eyes, that adorable pink nose. If an angel were to be turned into a cat and sent to earth, that angel would be Petalpaw. Her bright eyes looked back, wide with excitement. Nightpaw looked forward at her, bright yellow eyes locked with her's. His fluffy black pelt was well groomed, his ears were perked tall above his head, and his tail hung behind him. With a large smile, he leaped forward next to her, running through the Stoneclan territory, following the sun. Everything went black before almost the same scene started from the beginning, only this time there was something different. As the she-cat jumped forward, stood up, and turned, it was indeed Petal again, only she was larger and looked more mature. Yet she was still gorgeous. "Come on Night! Lets go on patrol together!" The scene once again faded. When it showed up again, something was different. Rather than being out in the open, this scene was in the Stoneclan camp, in front of the Medicine Cat den. Yellow eyes watched as Petalwish emerged from the den, approaching with a large smile on her face. She stopped right in front of him, touching their noses. "We are going to be parents, Nightshade, " she whispered. Just as multiple times before, the scene faded. When it returned, it was once again different. This time, Night found himself at the entrance of the Nursery. When he looked inside, he once again saw Petalwish. She was laying in one of the large nests, her had leaning down near her own stomach. Upon closer examination, there were five small figures at her stomach. He saw his five children when they were first born. Petal's bright blue eyes looked up to the father of the kits, a smile of pure joy covering her face. "We have a family, Night."
It was unknown to Nightpetal that all of this was just a dream. On the outside of his own mind, the large black tom laid in his nest, head resting on the edge of it and his fluffy tail curled around him. His eyes were closed and the only movement he displayed was the gentle rise and fall of his back as he breathed. There was one thing about him that currently stood out, though. Despite his being asleep, there was a smile across his face. He looked quite peaceful. Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams She had spent most of the early morning checking on the sick cats residing within the Medicine Cat's den. It seemed like another one walked in every night, cough heavy upon their chest and sickness curling from their breath.
Silentmask and Redclaw were getting worse, Sandblaze feared that it was only a matter of time before their whitecough quickly turned into greencough.
Done with her morning duties with her ginger coated mentor, the black she-cat was sent off to do her apprentice duties, which included checking on the elders. Just because she was apprenticed to the Medicine Cat it didn't mean she was excused from caring for the young or old.
In fact, it was probably more upon her shoulders than the others, seeing as she had to check on their health rather than just their comfort. Though, to be honest, Ebonypaw enjoyed spending time with the elders, their wisdom was always welcomed.
Selecting a mouse from the fresh-kill pile, small body still warm despite the temperature, Ebonypaw made her way towards the Elder's Den. Her large paws left impressions within the moderately disturbed snow underneath her. Slipping through the entrance, her green gaze was met with only the slumbering, dark form of Nightpetal.
The young feline didn't necessarily want to wake the elder tom from his dreaming, but she figured he had to be hungry nonetheless. Lowering her haunches, the fluffy apprentice sat down near Nightpetal's nest to rest the mouse upon paws, fluffy tail nub wriggling ever so slightly.
"Nightpetal, I brought you breakfast." Ebonypaw said in a respectable tone, she would give him a proper bow once he was awake. After all, it would be rude not to give Nightpetal the respect he deserved. "I believe it was just killed, still warm."

If it were his choice, that dream never would have ended. He hadn't seen his mate in almost 10 moons now, though he thought of her everyday. When he was awake it was difficult to recall memories from when he was an Apprentice, yet when he was asleep he could see all of those memories so clearly as though they were just yesterday. Any memories that involved his beloved were ones that would forever remain in his mind as clear as day. Should there ever come a day when he would indeed forget the face of his love, he would hope that it would be the day he made his way to Starclan so that he could be with her again.
The final scene that played in his mind was as simple as the rest: he and Petalwish sat in the Stoneclan camp, watching as their five children became Apprentices under the watchful eyes of the whole clan. But right in the middle of this memory, there was a strange voice. It didn't come from any direction around him. Not from his mate. Not from anyone. The voice echoed through his mind and almost drowned out every other sound.
"Nightpetal, I brought you breakfast."
He looked around in confusion, his gaze turning to his mate, yet she seemed unfazed. Did she not hear the voice as well? Just as he went to speak, the whole scene faded into darkness. This time when something came into view, it was not bright and vibrant, nor did it immediately contain the face of his mate as the others had. No, this was him truly opening his eyes. It took him a moment to realize that it had all been a dream. When he also registered that his eyes were open, he took a second to figure out what was going on. He was in his nest in the Elders den and there was another cat there with him. As he blinked his eyes, getting the blurriness out of them, he found that the voice he had heard in his dream had actually been Ebonypaw, the young Medicine Cat Apprentice, speaking to him outside of the dream.
At the sight of the fluffy black she-cat, much like himself, a smile formed across the tom's face. "Hello dear Ebony." The large black tom shifted his weight a little bit, stretching out one of his back legs, the crack of an old cat's bones echoing in the den. He then switched again, stretching the other leg. He adjusted himself once again so that he could lay with his head up rather than on his nest before looking back to her. He took notice of the mouse that she had brought with her. As she said that it had just been killed not too long ago, a deep purr rumbled through his large chest. As much as he wanted to remain laying, he knew that staying in his nest wasn't all that good for him. He had just had a good and long rest, so he was due for some movement. He bent his shoulders back a bit, pushing himself upwards with his front paws one at a time until he was finally sitting upright. He then gave a good push upwards with his back legs, having a little bit more trouble with them but still managing to stand. He then took a few slow steps forward towards the small she-cat, leaning down to give her a few slow and gentle licks over her forehead with his large tongue.
"Thank you." He then reached down and began to eat the mouse, taking relatively small bites so that he didn't overwhelm himself. Words: 615 | Ghost the Undead Goddess | Notes:Made by Abyss

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The young feline paused for a moment as the elder's tongue rasped across her head in gentle affection, though once he was done with his action she gave a proper dip of her head out of respect for the tom.
It was something that came naturally to the young feline, Rabbitfur had always instilled within her daughter that being respectful was an important factor when in the eye of the public.
Not to mention giving it to those who deserved the upmost of it.
Ebonypaw was pleased to see Nightpetal stretch and loosen his limbs that were stiffened from sleep, age and perhaps even the cold of leafbare. And it was definitely a good sign that he continued to have a healthy appetite, the chill of the season didn't seem to be bothering the old tom too much.
The same couldn't be said for the sick cats within the den she shared with Sandblaze.
"Nightpetal, how are you feeling? Any aches or pains from the cold?" Right down to business, per usual. Ebonypaw wasn't one to slack in her work, as the Medicine Cat's apprentice, it was her duty to check on her clanmates before relaxing into conversation.
Just because you are now Sandblaze's apprentice doesn't mean you can exclude yourself from the rest of the clan.
The fluffy black feline could just hear the proper tone of her older mother's voice, however the senior warrioress was correct. There was no reason why Ebonypaw should separate herself from the rest of the clan, it was just bad manners.
Giving Nightpetal a quick glance over, pleased that his scent was radiating with health, Ebonypaw lowered her haunches to sit near the tom she shared descriptive similarities with. "I didn't mean to eavesdrop.... But you were talking in your sleep." She stared, not one to pry as it could be rather rude, but kitten-like curiosity got the better of the fresh apprentice.
"Who is Petalwish?"

As he slowly ate his mouse, his bright yellow eyes looked up towards the young she-cat. As he did almost every time he spoke to another cat, he briefly looked over her, checking for anything that may have seemed out of the ordinary like wounds. It was almost natural for the old tom to check his clanmates to make sure they remained healthy. But Ebonypaw seemed fine, on the outside anyway. He was sure that she went through a lot of stress throughout her day. She was a Medicine Cat's Apprentice, which he knew couldn't be easy. Honestly, he couldn't have ever seen himself as anything other than a Warrior. Being cooped up in a den all day and occasionally going outside seemed a bit boring. Though, when he thought about it, those may have been his thoughts when he was younger, but he never could have known that he would end up doing that anyway. Nowadays, Nightpetal couldn't go very far from the Elder's den. His legs had been injured moons ago and were indeed healed, but they still got easily sore if he walked on them too much.
His ears perked as Ebonypaw asked him if he was feeling any aches or pains due to the cold weather. As she mentioned the cold, his eyes drifted towards the camp behind her. He could see the brightness of the snow and constantly could feel a cold breeze drift through the camp. He was just lucky that he had his fluffy and soft fur to mostly defend himself from that coldness. He lifted his head and moved his neck around a little bit, a soft crack sounding out as he still stretched out his muscles with each movement. "I suppose not. I do feel some of the cold that the snow brings. But it is only on the really bad storm days when my legs bother me a bit. Luckily, today is not one of those days."
He was only able to take one more bite of the small mouse as the she-cat sat next to him and spoke again. Though, unlike before, she didn't bring up anything health related. As a matter of fact, he was visibly surprised to find that Ebony asked who Petalwish was, for he had apparently been talking in his sleep. As his slight surprise faded away, a very loving and kind smile formed on his face and the pupils in his eyes grew wide with comfort. There was a very clear change in the tom as that name was mentioned. He turned his gaze away from the Apprentice, eyes drifting out to the camp again, though he didn't seem to be looking at the camp itself. His eyes suggested that he seemed to be looking far off in the distance to a place one could not see.
"I forget sometimes that some of you younger cats had never met her." His smile grew in size as he spoke his next words. "Petalwish was my mate." At this, Night began to tell Ebonypaw about his deceased mate, a loving tone in his voice.
"Petal was the most beautiful cat I had ever seen. Shiny silver fur, pure black spots and dapples, long legs, a long tail, and her eyes...her eyes were as blue as the sky. I can't even count how many times I have froze in place in my lifetime just from getting lost in them." A deep purr rumbled through the tom as a picture of his mate appeared in his head. "We were Apprentices together many moons ago, and we did everything together. Hunting, training, patrolling. There was hardly ever a single day when we weren't together. Not too long after we became Warriors, she agreed to be my mate, which was one of the happiest days of my life.
"It took a bit, but we had finally decided to have kits when we were about 32 moons old. That was when my sons, Crow-wing and Stormcloud, were born. If I remember correctly, it was actually the day after my oldest sons became Apprentices that me and Petal found out that we were expecting kits again. After that was when we had Raventalon, Ripplepool, and Quietwind. We finally had a family. We got to watch all five of our children turn into Apprentices and into Warriors. You can't even imagine how proud I was, and still am, of those five."
As he finished speaking momentarily, the happy moments in his life replaying in his head, there suddenly seemed to be a change in the air around them as his smile began to fade. His eyes lowered from the entrance of the den, going to the ground now.
"But...about 10 moons ago, me and Petalwish were out wandering the territory when we ran into a family of ferrets. We had accidentally gotten too close and they began to attack. We would have fought them off, but there were only two of us and a lot of them. So we ran. Eventually we found ourselves at one of the ravines near the outer edges of the territory. Petal's foot had twisted as we ran and she stumbled over the edge. I went to grab her and pull her up, but the ferrets were still chasing us. Just as I was getting her up, they charged into me and pushed us both over. That was when she..." The old tom grew quiet, not ending his sentence, for it was obvious how it ended. He remained quiet for a little bit, taking a moment to try and push away the awful memory. Finally, he let out a deep breath and lifted his head, looking back towards Ebonypaw.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to talk for so long. It's just...Petalwish meant more to me than anything in the world. Her and our family." The tom sighed quickly once again, bringing a smile back to his face as he looked at the she-cat. "I don't know if you knew this or not, but I haven't always been named Nightpetal. I used to be named Nightshade. But I had Hawkstar change my name to Nightpetal after Petalwish passed so that both of us could become Elder's together." The tom's large, fluffy tail brushed over Ebonypaw's flank as he spoke, hoping to get rid of the sad thoughts he may have brought forward with his story.

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The young black she-cat sat and listened with respect, her ears tilted forward to catch every word as it fell from the elder's lips. Her near emotionless gaze of soft green held the older tom within her sights, preferring to hold his line of sight as he spoke.
It was something Rabbitfur had taught her.
There were several different emotions that scrolled across the face of the black elder as he told his story, his life. The young medicine cat apprentice had never known of the she-cat he spoke of, his mate by the name of Petalwish, but could tell that the passed Stoneclanner had been important to Nightpetal.
So much so, he had changed his name to honor her passing.
Ebonypaw had never seen such a fierce love in a cat's expression. Sure, Rabbitfur loved her daughter with every strand of her being, like a good mother should, but she wasn't an overly affectionate warrior. As a matter of fact, it was nearly impossible to tell that Rabbitfur and Batscar were even mates.
And unless it had been in the comfort of privacy, Rabbitfur didn't dote upon her dark furred daughter. It was just proper that way, and it had been the way Ebonypaw lived by.
And yet, here was Nightpetal, describing the exact way his mate had looked right down to the beauty and capturing aura of her eyes. The picture romanticized by the tom who was still deeply in love with his mate, despite the fact that she had joined Starclan without him.
"It sounds like Petalwish was the type of cat who would have been proud to share a name with you." The proper rasp of the young she-cat finally fell from her parted maw, green gaze continuing to watch Nightpetal both calmly and observantly.
"It would have been an honor to meet such a respected warrior." Ebonypaw continued after a moment of pondering, nub of a tail wriggling behind her as she tried to recall any stories of the deceased feline. Though despite her interest in learning all she could, the black feline fell blank on any memories.

As Ebonypaw spoke, the tom looked at her for a moment, his brilliant yellow eyes unblinkingly locked on her. It wasn’t obvious externally, but there were a few thoughts going through his head. He recalled back when he and Petalwish watched their first litter become Apprentices. Petal had been so affectionate and motherly towards the two toms that day, even though they tried to push her away from embarrassment. They didn’t want their fellow Apprentice’s making fun of them just because their mother insisted on grooming their fur and checking on them constantly, as a new teen does. She did the same thing to their second litter as well, insisting on grooming their pelts and nuzzling them every time she saw them.
There was also the memory of Petalwish growing extremely proud and excited any time an Apprentice approached her asking for help for advice. She was motherly to all cats, whether they were her kits or not. Age didn’t matter, nor did rank, relation to her, or anything like that. She was one of the friendliest cats that Nightpetal had ever met.
Looking at Ebonypaw, he pictured Petalwish sitting next to the Medicine Cat Apprentice, talking to her about herbs and sicknesses and her mother. He could almost see an illusion of his dear silver tabby mate standing next to her, grooming the fluffy black fur of Ebony that reminded him of himself. A deep smile came over his face at this thought.
“She would have adored you. She would have showered you in licks just because of how much fur you have, “ he stated, laughing a little bit as he said it. He wasn’t entirely sure of whether Ebonypaw would ever actually let that happen to her or not, but it was still an amusing thought in his head. “It also doesn’t help that we look quite similar in appearance.”

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The old tom's comment brought the slightest of wriggles to the young she-cat's muzzle as amusement flashed withing those pale pools of the apprentice. However, it was brief for it vanished as quickly as it had appeared, the growing feline keen on keeping as proper as possible.
Without voicing or showing her opinion, the Medicine Cat apprentice would probably would not have allowed Petalwish to groom her. Not because of who the deceased she-cat was, but because of how Ebonypaw was in general. Because of how she had been raised.
Such affection was simply not something she did.
Rabbitfur had only groomed Ebonypaw until the young, black she-cat had been old enough to deal with her own array of fluff. The black and white senior warrior would only give minimal amounts of affection while in public, a flicker of a tail or a nose to an ear, but otherwise nothing.
Did Ebonypaw hurt for affection? Absolutely not, her mother loved her dearly. It was just the proper way of life to keep such things to small gestures or proceed with it out of the eye of the clan. In fact, the inky black she-cat rather liked it that way. There was no cat fussing over her looks or her actions.
Rabbitfur watched from afar, supported her daughter's actions and would occasionally check on her to make sure she was doing alright. Maybe even bring her favorite to eat, shrews.
Petalwish would have been something that Ebonypaw wasn't used too. Granted, if an elder insisted on grooming her long, feathered fur, she supposed she'd have to comply. It would only be proper and respectful to the she-cat who had lived her life for the best of Stoneclan.
The black she-cat flicked her ear at Nightpetal's last statement about their similarities. Which, of course, brought the she-cat's pale green gaze to scroll softly across the older tom's form in observation. In a way, it was true, they were both long haired, black felines.
Could she be related to Nightpetal? It was possible she supposed. They did belong to the same clan, not that meant too much.
Ebonypaw bore full resemblance to her father, Batscar. An honorable warrior of long, feathered black fur, a bobbed tail and large stature. Only the green of her watchful gaze belonged to that of her black and white mother, Rabbitfur.
Curiosity fluttered within the young she-cat's mind when her father crossed her thoughts. While Batscar and Rabbitfur remain mates, the black tom wasn't a very prominent figure within Ebonypaw's life. He was another of those proper over affection type of cats, not that that seemed to bother the young she-cat.
She knew of him as well as knowing him. Throughout her life he had been present just not actively attentive. It had been an injury of his along the border of Stoneclan and Lightningclan that had brought her attention to Sandblaze and the Medicine Cat's Den. In a way, it was possible Batscar was the reason she was Sandblaze's apprentice.
"We do look similar." Ebonypaw was sure many clans had cats that looked similar to one another, though there was no point in addressing that. She was sure Nightpetal was smart enough without having an apprentice tell him something like that. "I take after Batscar, my father, are you possibly related to him?
Despite him being her father, she knew little to nothing about the senior warrior who still bravely protected his clan with his life every day. Nor did Ebonypaw know anything about his family, aside from Rabbitfur and himself. It could be possible that somewhere along the road, Batscar and Nightpetal were related.
Though, it could also just be coincidence that two black cats shared similarites.
