Backdated to the day after the apprentice ceremony. Can you hear my heartbeat? Tired of feeling never enough...
Upon becoming an apprentice, the move out of the nursery had been a rather unwelcome idea to Tigerpaw. However, being a medicine cat apprentice meant he stayed in the medicine den with Kindleflare, rather than the apprentices' den, and that did wonders to soothe him about the move. He was still sad to leave Russetfall, and that he wouldn't be curling up beside his sister every night, but having Kindleflare helped him get used to being relatively on his own, without the familiar comfort of family. And the medicine den had become a place of refuge for him in the past moons, a place he felt safe and comfortable. It wasn't as hard as he thought it would be to fall asleep that first night, after constructing a new nest for himself beside Kindleflare's own. With his mentor beside him and the increasingly familiar scents of all the herbs in the den wreathed around him, Tigerpaw had as peaceful a sleep as any he'd ever had.
He woke early, earlier than normal for him, and for a moment lay in his nest, confused about where he was. He shifted slightly, but didn't feel Lynxkit's familiar weight against his back, nor could he pick out Russetfall's familiar, comforting scent. Instead the scents of a myriad of different herbs hit him, which was further disorienting until he finally remembered. Lynxkit was Lynxpaw now. They were apprentices. Finally he raised his head, assured he was safe, and a buzz of excitement started to grow in him. Kindleflare had properly acquainted him with the medicine den yesterday. She'd taught him bits and pieces of information about the various herbs she kept while he'd still been a kit, but he couldn't have picked out where anything in particular was stored. Herblore had interested him, but he'd never thought he'd need to remember all the details Kindleflare had told him, or that it would matter one way or another where she chose to store each of them. He didn't think he'd have time to concern himself with herbs after becoming an apprentice, never even considering the idea that Kindleflare might be looking for one.
As he stood and arched his back in a stretch, he tried desperately to recall everything she'd already taught him. He didn't want to make her teach him the same things over again, maybe she would think he wasn't cut out to be a medicine cat and pick someone else. His ears twitched back at the thought, of being forced to train as a warrior instead. Then he would have been rejected a medicine cat only to turn into a terrible warrior. How could make Russetfall and Firestar proud of him when he failed at not one but two things so utterly? He shook his head, trying to clear out those thoughts. It was his first day and Kindleflare was nice, she liked him, she called him her favorite visitor. And she'd always been patient with him before. She wasn't going to reject him on his first day. He tried to be logical and keep himself from falling into a panic about nothing. He just had to do his best. He recalled the certainty that had settled over him at his ceremony and clung to the memory. This was what he was supposed to do, he was sure of it.
Calmer, he turned in his nest and peered hesitantly over at Kindleflare's sleeping form. Should he wake her? When did she normally wake up? Maybe he should just wait. His ears pricked and he turned from the den suddenly, scurrying out into camp and toward the freshkill pile. He could get them something to share to start the day, for whenever Kindleflare woke up. He could wait. He didn't want to interrupt her sleep since he knew she must be a very busy cat. She should get all the sleep she could. There was no telling when some cat might need her, after all. Reaching the pile of leftover prey from yesterday's hunting patrols, he picked through it curiously, wondering if he would find anything Kindleflare would particularly like. He sighed as he had pawed through the entirety of it and found no finch. He knew it was her favorite from the time he'd asked Firebird if she knew, so he could surprise her on one of his visits by taking one to her. He supposed it was a bit much to ask to find one in the leftovers. He looked over his choices once more and picked up a decent looking sparrow instead. Hopefully it would be all right. They tasted similar, even if they weren't exactly the same. He padded back to the medicine den – his den, he thought with some amount of pride – and stepped inside to take the sparrow to Kindleflare's nest.

A distant sound roused her from her slumber, if only barely. The ginger and white healer remained curled in her nest, ears lazily listening to the sounds of a slowly rising Clan. Dimly aware of the things she had to do today, Kindleflare's body curled more tightly into itself, wanting nothing more than to remain in this peace. And yet, she knew such a thing was impossible, especially considering her rank. Someone would come looking for her for one reason or another. And it was better for everyone if she was prepared, both mentally and physically, for what was to come.
A good start to her preparations was grabbing a bite to eat. If she didn't ensure herself fed, then Firebird would bring her some prey, and it was best for the elder not to move too much. Moving often brought with it pain, and the last thing she wanted was to cause her own mother pain. And so, it was with this thought that she pushed herself from her nest and stumbled forward on sleepy paws. Tired ginger eyes quickly snapped open wide, however, as her paws caught on a foreign nest close to her own.
In a flurry of ginger fur and nest material, the timid she-cat toppled over, sprawling gracelessly across the offending nest. As she lay there on her stomach, front paws trapped beneath her, hind legs splayed out awkwardly behind her, and her chin flat on the ground, a familiar scent tickled her nose as it wafted from the nest. At the same moment recognition settled in, a growing figure stepped into the medicine cat den entrance. Her dark amber eyes lit up, and a purr instantly started in her chest, though the sound was awkward and strained due to her current predicament.
"T-Tigerpaw!" Came her muffled exclamation, her brain recalling the ceremony from yesterday just in time to call him by the right name. And then the warmth of joy settled in upon remembering that he was her apprentice. She'd fallen asleep with ease the previous night, contentment and pride sitting in her belly. She wasn't alone anymore. And she'd made Tigerpaw so happy with the opportunity to travel a less violence-prone path than that of a warrior.
Suddenly snapping back into the current world, Kindleflare's fur flushed with embarrassment as she struggled to straighten herself out. A little giggle escaped her, the she-cat considering how ridiculous she must have looked to her apprentice just then. After a momentary struggle to pull her forelegs out from their pinched position, the ginger coated medicine cat rose to a stand. Her purr was still going strong as she reached over to rasp her tongue over Tigerpaw's ear. "M-Morning, T-Tigerpaw. S-Seems I have a f-few things to g-get used to n-now." She commented, her features showing nothing but joy.
Dark amber eyes flicked to the sparrow in his jaws, and her tail swept around to guide him back toward the entrance. "C-Come, let's e-eat outs-side. The s-sun won't be t-too hot j-just yet, and it's b-best to enjoy the c-comfortable warmth when we c-can, right?" |

Can you hear my heartbeat? Tired of feeling never enough...
As he stepped back into the den, Kindleflare greeted him, though her voice was muffled and she sounded vaguely surprised. Probably not as surprised as he was when he saw her sprawled awkwardly in his nest. Tigerpaw blinked down at his mentor in confusion for a moment, but then the ginger she-cat was righting herself, pushing back to her paws, and when she giggled he relaxed. Obviously she hadn't managed to hurt herself or she wouldn't be laughing, would she?
She purred, rasping her tongue over his ear, and he returned the purr, happy she was awake and they could start their day together. “Goff murrnin Kinnelflur!” his ears twitched back in mild embarrassment at the muffled greeting he offered in return, half forgetting he was still carrying prey before he'd tried to speak. It really settled in then. It would be like this every day. He'd enjoyed spending time with Kindleflare so much before, and now he'd get to spend even more time with her. Every day he'd be training with her, learning about all the herbs she kept, how to heal his Clanmates when they were sick or hurt, and about StarClan too. His purr deepened and he nodded and followed her outside, not trying to speak around the sparrow in his mouth again.
Back outside, he set the bird down and folded his legs beneath him, settling down beside Kindleflare and nudging the sparrow toward her, “Sorry it's not a finch. I looked, but there weren't any.” He'd really wanted to get her a finch to start off their first full day together as mentor and apprentice. He knew she wouldn't mind, and maybe it was a little silly, but he was still a bit disappointed about it. Looking over at her, he tilted his head slightly, “You're okay, aren't you? Is my nest in the way? Should I move it?” He didn't really want to. He liked sleeping beside Kindleflare, used to having some cat beside him in the nursery, and definitely didn't want to sleep alone, but if she was going to keep tripping over it then he didn't want to be the reason she hurt herself either.

Walking side by side with the young tom, the ginger and white she-cat picked a spot not far from the medicine cat den to settle down and eat the prey Tigerpaw had brought for them. Once he released the bird from his jaws, he could speak more clearly, although she had to admit his muffled exclamation of good morning had been absolutely adorable. As the young tom began apologizing for the particular prey not being a finch, Kindleflare blinked in momentary confusion. Eventually, that confusion disintegrated into a laugh, and she leaned forward to nudge him with her nose.
"W-We'll g-get a finch n-next time we sh-share prey, hm? Sparr-rrow's are nearly as delicious, a-and since it w-was a s-surprise pick by y-you, I'm s-sure it will be j-just as d-delicious as a-any finch!" She purred warmly. His next words caused her ears to prick up, and she offered him another one of the warm smiles that were so easy for her to make when she was talking to him. "N-N-No, of course n-not, Tigerp-paw. I'll g-get used to it j-just fine. I j-just... H-Haven't had a-anyone sleep n-next to me for... W-Well, for moons. S-See, when c-cats are sick, their n-nests are n-not necessarily c-close to m-mine."
She explained briefly, settling into a more comfortable position with her tail tucking in against her flank. "T-To help m-mitigate the ch-chance of g-getting sick myself." Her face brightened quickly as her mind drifted away from the thought of sick cats. "Th-This was only day o-one! I'm s-sure th-that, four s-sunrises from now, I w-won't be tripping a-and making a m-mess of your n-nest anymore!" She exclaimed. With a sweep of her tail, she invited the young tom to take the first bite, honestly content for the company alone. It normally took her a few moments after waking up before she really had much of an appetite.
With a flick of her ear, she tilted her head slightly. "D-Did you s-sleep alright, T-Tigerpaw?" She asked him. "I kn-know the b-building of your nest l-last night was a l-little rushed. If i-it's still a bit uncomfortable, w-we can look into g-getting you some different m-materials?" She suggested, knowing that the change to the medicine cat's den was a big one. She truly wanted to ensure her apprentice felt as comfortable as she could possibly make him in his new position with her. |

Can you hear my heartbeat? Tired of feeling never enough...
He purred softly at her reassurances, feeling more and more affection for the ginger medicine cat. He was so glad she asked him to be her apprentice. He sighed in relief when she assured him his nest was fine, and then thought about what she'd said about sleeping alone for moons. His ears twitched back and he wondered if she ever got lonely. She'd have lots of visitors, hurt or sick, either physically, mentally, or spiritually, but going to her nest alone every night? With some reluctance, he admitted to himself that he would have to do the same one day... hopefully one very very far off day. And with his family beside him in the nursery and Kindleflare beside him now, he didn't know how he'd ever get to sleep by himself. The shadows and night sounds weren't so scary when he had another warm, furry body beside him.
He twitched his ears again, pushing away those thoughts for now. Kindleflare wasn't going anywhere for a long time. He wouldn't have to worry about that for moons and moons. He ducked his head as his belly rumbled and she swept her tail for him to eat first. Pulling out some feathers, he thought about that day with Firebird that had really been the beginning of his friendship with Kindleflare and decided he would line her nest with some of the feathers later. Hopefully he could surprise her with that since he couldn't surprise her with a finch. He took a bite as she asked him if he'd slept alright and shook his head, taking a moment to swallow his food before he spoke, “It was better than I thought it would be, actually. I didn't think I'd fall asleep so easy in a new place... but I guess the medicine den isn't really that new 'cause I've already spent so much time in it visiting you.” He purred happily at that and took another bite, chewing thoughtfully, “I like all the herb smells.”
Some of the other kits called the medicine den 'stinky' but Tigerpaw was sure it was just because all the different scents together could be a little overwhelming. In all his time visiting Kindleflare over the past few moons, he'd come to find the scent to be nearly as comforting as Kindleflare herself. It was... a safe scent. The scent of health, the scent of things that could fix broken bodies and cure sickness. It was kind of nice to sleep surrounded by all that. He pushed the rest of the sparrow toward her then, ears pricked with curiosity, “What are we gonna do today?” He'd heard apprentices talking about their first tour of the territory before, those usually happened on their first day as apprentices from what he'd heard. But did medicine cat apprentices get tours too?
He supposed it would be silly if they didn't. Even a medicine cat needs to know their way around their own territory, and where to find all the herbs they needed to use. Of course, Tigerpaw didn't think he'd be able to remember all the different places to find all the different herbs after just one tour, but he had to start somewhere. Then again it didn't seem as important on the first day as it did for warrior apprentices either. There was plenty for him to learn while still in camp, so he had no idea what Kindleflare might have planned for them. He would really rather stay in camp, but if he was just going out to look for herbs with Kindleflare maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

The ginger and white healer smiled brightly at Tigerpaw. "I-I like the h-herb smell t-too. It was s-strong at first, but n-now.. Now it b-brings me a sense of c-comfort. I c-couldn't imagine myself in any other role." She admitted, bowing to take her share of the prey Tigerpaw had brought them. One ear remained tilted toward her new apprentice, for it seemed young Tigerpaw's curiosity had yet to be satisfied. When he asked her what they would be doing today, Kindleflare blinked twice before lifting her head. She was terribly unused to developing a set schedule, especially for someone other than herself.
It was still strange to her that now she would be teaching someone the role she'd fallen into all those moons ago. And although it was scary, at the same time she felt... Content, proud. Traditionally, she supposed mentors took their apprentices for a tour of the territory, and yet... She felt as though the tour would be far more fruitful if he had been exposed to some of the herbs that would be important throughout his career. That way he would begin associating the areas to the plants. At least... That was how she had come to consider LightningClan's home.
Licking her lips to clear any remnants of prey from her maw, Kindleflare glanced toward Tigerpaw. "W-Well... I was th-thinking we w-would wait on the t-tour of the territ-tory until maybe t-tomorrow? F-For today, I'd like t-to.. To see what you r-remember from y-your visits." She stopped herself from adding 'if that's alright with you'. Despite her timid nature, she had to remind herself Tigerpaw was her apprentice now. She should at least try to act like a proper mentor. Clearing her throat gently, the fiery coloured healer straightened herself, deep amber gaze sweeping over the nearby area.
It was then that something brilliant and red caught her attention. With an excited little gasp, Kindleflare motioned for Tigerpaw to follow her. "C-Come, I have s-something to sh-show you." She told him, leading him to a nearby rock sitting in a patch of sun. Atop the rock sat a bright red flower, petals drying out in the incessant heat bearing down upon it. The centre of the flower held several ebony seeds, which had loosened as the flower had begun crumpling in on itself. With a peek at Tigerpaw, she bit her lip to stop from blurting out the plant name.
She wanted to see if he remembered one of their previous conversations. "C-Can you t-tell me w-what this is, T-Tigerpaw?" She asked, waiting excitedly for his answer. Poppy seeds were a sight most cats were accustomed to. But seeing them still attached to the thin-petaled plants? Not everyone recognized them right away. Tigerpaw, however, had asked her where poppy seeds came from. And she'd told him about the brilliant red flowers, and the process of drying the flower to retrieve the seeds. All he would have to do was think back on one of their many conversations. |

Can you hear my heartbeat? Tired of feeling never enough...
When Kindleflare announced that their tour of the territory would wait until tomorrow, Tigerpaw nodded, relieved. He had no desire at all to explore beyond the camp, and putting it off was perfectly fine with him. But... she wanted to see what he could remember from his visits. His ears flicked nervously. Oh no. His previous concerns began to return. What if he couldn't remember anything she asked him? She would think he hadn't been listening all that time and then-. No, he already had this conversation with himself. She wouldn't make him stop being her apprentice this soon.
A moon or two in future was another question.
He shook his head lightly, as if to shake out the negative thoughts. He'd only been a little kit when she'd started telling him bits and pieces of things about the herbs she kept. She wouldn't hold it against him if he didn't remember everything. And surely he would remember some things. It would be enough. Wouldn't it?
Kindleflare's light gasp drew his attention and he leapt to his paws in mild alarm, but she was only beckoning him to follow her and he stuck close to her side as she announced she had something to show him. A bright red flower sat upon a rock and Tigerpaw's ears angled toward it with interest, and only a moment later he recalled the soft petals Kindleflare had showed him so recently. Drying in the sun, the petals didn't look nearly as soft anymore, but they were still bright.
His amber gaze flicked to his mentor as she asked him if he knew what it was and he nodded excitedly, his short tail flicking, “I mean, I think so.... Those... those are poppy seeds there, aren't they?” He peered at the flower a bit closer, “Is that the same flower you showed me before? Does that mean it's dried enough? Are the seeds ready?”
