Sootpaw What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything? Vincent Van Gogh✣StoneClan, 8 Moons, She-Cat Waking up, Sootpaw felt the first droplets of rain. Looking up at the sky, she saw how dark it still was, but how grey the sky was. Oh, StarClan... the weather is getting worse. The rain looked set to be there for the whole day. Not looking forward to a day of waterlogged hunting - her pelt, though short, retained water and made her feel desperately uncomfortable - she decided to take care of the elders first. Make sure they were comfortable and dry. There was something else she felt in the damp air, and she did not like it one bit. She felt cold. She fluffed up her short pelt before having a good stretch. Finally satisfied she had her muscles warm enough, she walked sedately over to the elder's den.
"Fallenleaf? Fallenleaf, are you awake?"
Sootpaw still remembered the time when she was a kit when Fallenleaf had given her that tip about keeping her tail off the floor, but not too high.

[smear:f3e471]Fallenleaf [/smear:f8c56a] ~~~~~~~~~
Leafbare's slow approach was all too apparent to the aging she-cat. The torrential rain dampening the air certainly wasn't helping either. Dull aches throbbed in her joints, the worst of them originating from her shoulder. Pale yellow eyes slowly blinked open, staring toward the back wall of the otherwise empty den. She couldn't help but think on how she was the only StoneClan elder left. How much longer will you be able to stick around, Fallenleaf? She mused to herself, jaws cracking in a whisper of a sorrowful smile. Her tail curled around her slowly, the she-cat not yet daring to move the rest of her frame.
That is, until Sootpaw's voice called through the entrance to the elders' den. White ears perked, swiveling towards the source of the noise. Stifling a groan, Fallenleaf willed herself to roll to a more upright position. Hauling herself into a sit slowly, careful not to put too much weight on her sleep-stiffened former injury, Fallenleaf called back warmly. "Yes, Sootpaw. Please, come on in. It sounds dreadful out there!" She rasped, voice rumbling in a purr as she finished speaking. Curling her cream-striped tail over her white paws, the StoneClan elder tipped her head to the side as she watched the apprentice approach.
She clearly recalled the day Sootpaw had stumbled up to her as a kit, offering a butterfly she'd hunted. The event had warmed Fallenleaf's heart, especially when the young kit had begged her to come out of retirement and train her. Of course, Fallenleaf's mentoring days had long passed by that time. Sootpaw's determination had earned her an offer of secret mentorship, however. Pausing momentarily, Fallenleaf mulled over who had been assigned to train Sootpaw. Petalrain, if I'm not mistaken... She thought to herself. Dismissing further contemplation on the warrior's mentoring skill, Fallenleaf focused on Sootpaw's seemingly... Dejected demeanor.
"Sootpaw, is everything alright?" She meowed gently, sweeping her tail to invite her to take a seat nearby. |

Sootpaw What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything? Vincent Van Gogh✣StoneClan, 8 Moons, She-Cat Sootpaw bounded up to her secret mentor and respectfully placed her nose on the elder's shoulder, but it was a half-hearted gesture. Sootpaw had a lot on her mind, which was going at roughly a hundred paw-steps a minute. She suddenly realised that she was soaking wet - so backed a few paces away, not wanting to wet Fallenleaf, who, Sootpaw was sure, was having more than enough problems with her joints and old injury as it was, and shook the bulk of the water out of her fur. She then curled up next to Fallenleaf.
"I wish I knew where to begin. So much is on my mind right now, I don't know where to start. Fallenleaf, when did life start getting so... so complicated? So hard?"
Sootpaw fell quiet, trying to put her thoughts into words and into an order she felt comfortable with telling. Her problems - her feelings for Kestrelpaw, her wish that Meadowpaw would, perhaps, one day, grow to like her, or at least tolerate her, her worries over whether Kestrelpaw would return those feelings, her misgivings over Petalrain... She felt the she-cat didn't want her as her apprentice, she'd rather have no apprentice at all. She was also worried about Fallenleaf, but she couldn't tell her friend that... it would just upset her.

[smear:f3e471]Fallenleaf [/smear:f8c56a] ~~~~~~~~~
With a soft smile, Fallenleaf touched her nose to the younger she-cat's head as Sootpaw bounded up to greet her despite a dripping pelt. The elder couldn't help but smile in amusement as Sootpaw seemed to realize her coat was soaked through. Watching with a warm, pale yellow gaze, Fallenleaf lowered herself to a sit until Sootpaw was finished drying off. Before long, the apprentice was curled at her side, and Fallenleaf let herself drop slowly into a position where she could properly wrap herself around the younger she-cat comfortably. As Sootpaw began speaking, Fallenleaf turned an attentive ear.
Patient yellow eyes blinked worriedly at what Sootpaw had to say. With a soft laugh, Fallenleaf shifted to rasp her tongue over the troubled she-cat's ear. "Well, Sootpaw, life started getting complicated for me the moment I stepped into warriorhood. And I can't say it's gotten much easier. But you, my dear, are much too young to be finding things to be so difficult." With her lame shoulder stretched out before her slightly, Fallenleaf touched Sootpaw's cheek with her nose gently. "Now, why don't you tell me what's gotten you so wound up, hm?" Smiling that warm smile of hers, Fallenleaf tilted her head curiously.
"Start anywhere you'd like, Sootpaw. I'll do my best to follow along and ask questions for clarity. Anything you say will be kept between us, claw my heart and hope to die." She promised. She knew how difficult it could be to reveal secrets of the heart. She wanted Sootpaw to have a safe space, someone she could confide in. Fallenleaf only hoped the younger she-cat would see her in that light. |

Sootpaw What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything? Vincent Van Gogh✣StoneClan, 8 Moons, She-Cat Curled up with Fallenleaf, the elder's den protecting the two she-cats from the worst of the rain, Sootpaw finally began to feel peaceful for the first time in a while. There was something about Fallenleaf which put Sootpaw at ease (which was a very rare thing indeed for her, as she liked to carry her troubles close to her heart (and therefore cause herself a lot of unnecessary stress).
She decided to start from the beginning and see where things led. Fallenleaf would know what to do. Getting her thoughts into some semblence of order, she began speaking.
"I... think I like Kestrelpaw. It scares me a great deal... Meadowpaw doesn't like me, I know she doesn't... I'm not good enough for her darling brother... Not only that, but he's out on a trip right now so I won't even get to see him for a while, the apprentice's den feels awfully empty without him, I don't have anyone to sleep next to at night. Plus Petalrain doesn't like me either, I don't know what i've done wrong, how am I supposed to impress a cat who prefers spending her time with handsome toms? I was born the wrong gender to do that. It's like she doesn't actually want me as her apprentice, like she's only doing it because Hawkstar told her to... but that's not fair on me, and complaining about it only makes me seem extremely ungrateful... plus i'm worried about you, Fallenleaf. You're so frail... I don't know what I'd do when StarClan eventually claim you as their own... And on top of everything else, I don't even know if Kestrelpaw feels the same way. Oh Fallenleaf... what do I do?"
Sootpaw took a modicum of comfort from Fallenleaf's warmth, that had finally started to permeate hers, as she rested her head on her paws, thoughts buzzing.

[smear:f3e471]Fallenleaf [/smear:f8c56a] ~~~~~~~~~
Gentle yellow eyes blinked at the younger she-cat, the elder pausing in her steady grooming to read Sootpaw’s expression. A soft purr rumbled in her throat, one offering comfort to the fretting she-cat. So young, with so much already on her shoulders… Fallenleaf mused to herself almost sorrowfully. Flattening a stray piece of fur against Sootpaw’s head, the elder adjusted her position slightly to end a dull ache in her shoulder blade before speaking. “Ah yes, young love… What a precious little thing it is, hm? It’s alright to like someone, Sootpaw.” She smiled reassuringly, her thoughts drifting back to when Skunkspots had revealed her crush.
Skunkspots had been much older than Sootpaw, but the novelty of the situation was the same to both she-cats. It didn’t matter how many moons you’d lived; love was a surprising, and terrifying thing. “Try not to worry about Meadowpaw too much, Sootpaw. Kestrelpaw is his own cat, and he will make his own decisions. Meadowpaw will come to understand that, and I’m certain she’ll come to accept you. This is something she needs to work through, it is not a reflection of you. I promise.” She told her earnestly, white and cream tail swishing slowly in the nest behind her.
“Petalrain… Is a she-cat I’m unsure you’d be able to change. But as I mentioned with Meadowpaw, that is not a reflection of you. You are a wonderfully energetic, and willing to learn apprentice. Any warrior would be lucky to have you as an apprentice, Sootpaw. Don’t let Petalrain get you down, things will work out in the end, I’m sure of it.” She reassured the tortoiseshell she-cat. With a soft laugh, she continued. “Hawkstar might surprise you. I’ve known him for many moons, and he is one of the most honorable, and understanding cats I’ve met. If you think it should be done, talk to him about Petalrain. He will do his best to see things as you do.”
Slowly, she shifted forward to nose Sootpaw’s chin off her paws. “And chin up, Sootpaw. No need to worry yourself over my well-being. That’s my job.” She purred teasingly, smiling at Sootpaw. “You should focus on the here and the now. You’re too young to be fretting about the future so much. I’m here now, aren’t I? Let’s focus on that instead, hm? I’m not going anywhere just yet.” |

Sootpaw What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything? Vincent Van Gogh✣StoneClan, 8 Moons, She-Cat Sootpaw felt distinctly relieved that she had told Fallenleaf everything. She felt safe with the older cat. She felt... peaceful, whenever she was near her. It was as if Fallenleaf took all of her problems and just... made them not matter anymore. Sootpaw started to purr happily.
"Oh, guess what! I spoke to Hawkstar in passing... He said if you agree, I can share your den with you for a while. I uhh... I thought you might like the company? I know I would. I'll get you all the fresh-kill you could eat and i'll hunt for you and I'll bring you back the biggest mouse I can find!"
Sootpaw laid her head on Fallenleaf's flank, enjoying being close to another cat. She felt as secure as she felt in the crook of her mother's belly when she was a kit. Her kit-hood felt so long ago, though. She felt as though a lot had happened to her since she left the nursery and took her -paw name.
Still purring gently, she began to groom her friend's shoulders, taking extra care not to be too rough where she knew Fallenleaf's injury still hurt her occasionally.
