Kestrelkit 6 Moons - Tom - StoneClan Ever since he'd caught a glimpse of it, Kestrelkit had wanted to know more. How had Hawkstar gotten it? Was it from an actual hawk? Eagletalon had told him that Hawkstar's warrior name had been Hawkwing, not Hawkscar like he'd been expecting - but that didn't make the Clan leader's battle wound any less interesting.
With Duskflower and Meadowkit napping, Kestrelkit had scurried out of the nursery - the Clan had more or less accepted it as fact that Eagletalon's two kits were allowed to pester Hawkstar in his den - first chance he could. The young tom, his long off-white whiskers twitching, the curiosity evident in the way he fidgeted on his paws, poked his head into Hawkstar's den.
When his eyes adjusted to the gloom, Kestrelkit let out an audible awww huff of air in disappointment. Hawkstar wasn't here! The tom looked back at the rest of camp, searching first with his eyes - and then with his nose, trying to latch onto Hawkstar's scent the way he'd been taught to latch onto his parents' scents. Expression falling serious with concentration, Kestrelkit threw a few cautious glances to the cats milling around camp, and followed Skunkspots and Valiantstride to the entrance to StoneClan's camp.
Just then, he saw Honeynose and Vipertail nuzzling each other's cheeks nearby, and he wrinkled his nose at their affection. Gross! He hoped he never felt that way about a she-cat -- Vipertail used to be a great warrior, but now all he ever did was hang out with Honeynose!
Kestrelkit collided with a wall of sandy brown fur, and his haunches plopped onto the dirt in a hard sit, his amber eyes set wide, startled. "OW, that hur--Hawkstar!" Kestrelkit was on his paws at once, greeting the Clan leader with a loud purr. "Can I ask you a question? Dad said it'd be okay. It's about your scar! Can I see it?" Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains It wasn't often the Clan leader spent time on his own. Early this morning, however, he'd left the Clan in Wolfclaw's capable paws, and set off on his own to hunt. It had given him ample time to think on many things currently pestering his mind day in and day out. On the forefront, of course was the coming reclaim of Sun Stones. With each passing day in Greenleaf, StoneClan grew stronger, and Hawkstar grew more confident the right time to take back what was rightfully there's was drawing nearer.
Other thoughts were not nearly so... Dark and looming. For example, he'd spent some time thinking on mentors for Eagletalon's kits. For Kestrelkit, adventurous as he was, Hawkstar figured the calmer, quieter bearing of Mistpetal would suit him well. It was Meadowkit he was stumped on. Many options hard flickered through his mind, but one had yet to strike him as the right choice. It certainly was a puzzle, one Hawkstar fully intended to solve before long. After all, the kits were getting far too large for the nursery. I'll make them apprentices soon. He told himself, sandy tail flicking behind him as he returned to camp with a hawk in his jaws.
He paused near the entrance of the camp to speak with Hailstrike, who was just leaving with a patrol in tow. "If you could keep an eye on the LightningClan border while you are there, I would appreciate that. There hasn't been much trouble recently but... We can't get too lax. They are not to be trusted." She nodded in understanding, before leading the small group behind her out. He was just about to pick up the hawk lying to his left when someone crashed into his right fore paw. Bowling Hawkstar over was no easy task, though Kestrelkit certainly gave it a valiant attempt.
Blinking down in confusion at the startled bundle of fur, Hawkstar's confusion quickly melted to an affectionate rumble as Kestrelkit leapt back to his paws excitedly. The young tom's next rush of words had him tilting his head slightly, pale amber eyes flicking toward the warrior's den as if he might find Eagletalon there to shoot him a questioning glance. "My scar?" He meowed, the confusion returning to his voice for a moment. Kits and their fascination for battle scars. He thought to himself before smiling at his nephew. "Alright, let me just put this where it belongs first, hm?"
Stooping to pick up the hawk, the sand colored StoneClan figurehead motioned towards the fresh-kill pile with his tail and led the way. The task only took him a moment, the big tom reaching up to swing the impressive bird onto the top of the pile. "Now then," he began, pale amber eyes scanning the surroundings. "Let's find some place where we won't be in the way, hm?" Eventually settling on a dip in the stones near the apprentices' den, the StoneClan leader lowered himself to the ground before peering at the younger tom.
"Dare I ask what your father's been telling you, hm?" He laughed, before rolling onto his back to expose his belly. A distinctive parting of his fur quickly revealed the path of the long ago wound. It didn't take much more effort to locate the pink line that traced the underside of his stomach. Although this was not the only scar Hawkstar bore from his many moons as a Clan cat, it was the only one large enough to be seen beneath his sand-colored fur. To many, it was impressive, if not grimly so, especially for those old enough to remember the cause.
He could only imagine what a tom as young as Kestrelkit might think. leader of stoneclan and may you have the courage to scale their summits background image | harley king | Fawn | table by phoenix

Kestrelkit 6 Moons - Tom - StoneClan Kestrelkit walked right up to Hawkstar's belly - his paws resting on the sandy wall of the Clan leader's stomach - to get a good look at the scar. He traced it with his nose, shivering in surprise at how long it was. Wow! It's almost as long as I am! Looking at his uncle with amazed, reverent eyes, Kestrelkit scrambled back ungracefully to give Hawkstar room to roll back over. "Whoa! Dad said it was from a fox, but that's not true - that scar's from Demon, isn't it?" Kestrelkit paused, considering where he ranked a fox, Demon, and the neighboring Clans on the list of 'StoneClan's worst enemies'. "Was it LightningClan? I wouldn't put it past them!" Kestrelkit spat in the dirt, holding himself up proudly. "But I bet you got the better of them, huh Uncle Hawkstar?"
Even if it was a fox, Hawkstar had obviously won. Kestrelkit would bet all the bedding in his nest that the fox had even worse scars. Hawkstar was undefeatable. That was like... That was like trying to picture the dens collapsing; he just couldn't. StoneClan wasn't going anywhere, and neither was Hawkstar. As he looked to the muscular figurehead, Kestrelkit's attention span wandered, and he wondered what it would like to be in a battle.
What if I get a scar like that too?
Kestrelkit's neck fur bristled, but he quickly gave himself a shake to make it lie flat again. If he'd thought that bee sting had hurt, Eagletalon had said battle wounds hurt much worse, and for days after. Kestrelkit didn't want to think about how much Hawkstar's scar had hurt. He didn't like picturing Hawkstar in pain. I bet Herondive and Vipertail were really scared... Laugh at yourself first, before anyone else can. 283 Words || BlooRey DVD || Notes: xD Don't mind him. He just has no concept of time. Hawkstar has always been Hawkstar, obviously.

Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains As the young tom scooted back, the StoneClan figurehead allowed himself to roll back over carefully. He didn't want to have to explain to Eagletalon or Duskflower how he had managed to squash their son. Before he could think any further on that scenario, however, his nephew was off, rambling on a tangent and throwing out his own theories about what had really happened all those moons ago. With an amused flick of his ear, the big tom crossed his fore paws and patted his tail against the ground beside him, inviting Kestrelkit to come and settle down a little closer.
"As enticing as your versions of the story are, Kestrelkit, I'm afraid your father told you the truth." He rumbled affectionately. Hawkstar found it interesting that, in Kestrelkit's mind, a LightningClan warrior was a more important enemy than a fox. Though, beneath the severity and power hungriness of Firestar's reign... Perhaps that wasn't an incorrect assumption. Pushing away his thoughts on the rival Clan, Hawkstar focused on the young tom once more. "Though I do have a scar from a LightningClan warrior, the particular scar you're asking about was from a fox, many, many moons ago." He paused a moment, grasping for words he could offer to encourage the tom's adventurous nature, yet plant seeds of wisdom all the same.
No need to terrify the soon-to-be apprentice with tales of his near-death experience. "In the end, the fox did lose, yes. But I want you to remember something, Kestrelkit. For me. Do you think you can do that?" He questioned the younger tom, tipping his head inquisitively. Once satisfied with his nephew's promise, the big tom continued. "Strength is not always what you can do alone. Just as important is what you can do with others, be it your family, your friends or your Clan. Forge bonds that will withstand any test, and you will come out stronger, and a better cat for it."
His sandy tail tip twitched from where it lay. "I had my parents and my sister standing at my side that day, and I thank StarClan for it every chance I get. Never forget those who are most important to you, for they will give you strength." After touching the young tom's ear with his nose, Hawkstar peered down at Kestrelkit with a mischievous gleam in his eyes. In a rumbling whisper, the StoneClan leader rasped "Do you want to hear the story about the Great Battle with the fox?" leader of stoneclan and may you have the courage to scale their summits background image | harley king | Fawn | table by phoenix

Kestrelkit 6 Moons - Tom - StoneClan "In the end, the fox did lose, yes. But I want you to remember something, Kestrelkit. For me. Do you think you can do that?"
Kestrelkit at once became respectful, his tail eagerly flicking against the stone flooring as he sat down and gave Hawkstar a wide-eyed stare. The Clan leader spoke of strength, and family, and support. Kestrelkit's heart swelled with pride for their Clan, and he gazed back at the others as if he could convey how much he loved being a part of StoneClan with a look alone.
"I won't forget, Uncle. I promise!" He pledged, no longer sitting down. The sandy-coated kitten held himself as nobly as he could, as if his apprenticeship ceremony had come early. "I'll tell Meadowkit too." I'll always fight by her side. Nothing was going to change how protective he felt over his sister. He would always fight for his Clan; Kestrelkit could imagine himself taking on a badger, or even a snake, all by himself. But he knew he could ask for help if he really needed it. StoneClan cats stuck together!
I'll be a great warrior. Strong and courageous. Even as the excitement took hold, so too did the apprehension. What if he didn't make a great warrior? What if he disappointed Eagletalon and Duskflower? What if he disappointed Hawkstar?
The touch to his ear jostled him from these insecure thoughts, and Kestrelkit stammered out a reply as his attention jolted back to Hawkstar. "H-Huh? OH--Yeah!" The kitten was all ears, his muted amber gaze glowing with interest. Laugh at yourself first, before anyone else can. 259 Words || BlooRey DVD || Notes

Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains The big tabby tom settled into his spot a little more comfortably, filtering through the events of his past already to figure out what details should more than likely be left out. His whole nearly dying thing was definitely out. And... It was likely best he edit Breezeflight out of it. With a chuckle to himself upon imagining her scowling at him from StarClan, the StoneClan figurehead's amber eyes focused on the kit at his paws as he began to set the scene. "It was early Newleaf, and the wind howled over StoneClan's territory, still frigid with the remnants of Leafbare..." Actually, it had been a very mild day, with barely any wind at all.
But where was the fun in that?
-----
Pale amber eye slid to his left, where a golden she-cat with spots like a leopard strode confidently. Her burning amber eyes met his, and she flashed him a grin as she padded forth. Though she was smaller in stature than he, she walked with the confidence of a lion, something she'd undoubtedly inherited from their father. Their father, whom happened to be padding next to her. The brown tom's green gaze slipped toward his kits, an intense pride glinting behind them as Craterstorm chuckled slightly to himself.
Craterstorm's attention shifted when the slim black shoulder of his mate, Dawnshadow butted against him affectionately. Seeing the two together brought a lightness to Hawkwing's heart; he hoped he could find happiness like that some day too.
Despite the yowl of the wind, the sandy tom's ears picked up the sound of prey scuttling nearby. With a wordless flick of his tail, the young tom peeled away to track the creature causing such quiet commotion while his family continued on.
It wasn't long before he found the mouse, weaving amongst the few trees in the Little Woods. Dropping into a crouch, he stepped forward as lightly as he could manage, his mountainous frame difficult to hide in the sparse vegetation.
Of course, a brilliant red pelt was no easier conceal than his. Just barely managing to leap out of the way of an unexpected paw, Hawkwing's ears locked in on the low and dangerous sound of a fox's growl.
----
The sandy tom paused a moment, glancing down at Kestrelkit and starting up a low rumbling sound deep in his throat. Flattening his ears, the StoneClan leader edged his nose closer to Kestrelkit, almost like a stalking fox, until Kestrelkit batted at him to keep him back. With a wry grin, he cleared his throat to continue. "And so, I stared it down, feeling its cold, dead eyes peering into my soul as it inched closer still..." He'd encountered the fox upon hearing his mentor's agonized scream. But if Breezeflight wasn't going to be in this story at the start... Not to mention this sounded cooler, too.
----
It lunged forward, teeth snapping into thin air as the large tom back pedaled. Rising onto his hind legs to meet the fox's rear, he yowled a warning to his surrounding family members. "FOX! In the Little Woods, FOX!" His momentary distraction gave the creature an opening, and it swatted a heavy paw against his shoulder, causing him to stagger.
Landing awkwardly and just barely avoiding another blow, Hawkwing retaliated with a blow of his own to the fox's muzzle. It shrieked in rage, but before it could move to strike again, something crashed into it's flank, knocking it several pawsteps to the side. Leopardstrike's tail carved a jagged pattern into the air as she hissed, standing strong between her brother and the fox.
Rising to his paws, he joined her side, and they lunged together, in perfect unison to fend off the intruder. With every strike, the fox grew more and more enraged, and eventually the madness worked in its favor. Leopardstrike was thrown to the ground in a flurry of movement, the red-furred demon's focus zeroing in on the downed she-cat.
Without a thought, the tom launched himself between the strike and his sister, the fox scoring two blows; one on the shoulder to send him crashing to the ground, the second across his chest and belly. Hissing involuntarily, Hawkwing rolled away from a third blow, but felt his strength lacking.
Until the large brown form of his father appeared, accompanied by the slim but agile form of his mother. Despite wounds of varying severity, the family moved forth, joined by Breezeflight, a senior warrior who'd heard the commotion. The fox found itself outmatched, and after a few more desperate attempts at driving off the throng of defending cats, it shrieked in defiance and thundered away.
Though they ensured it exited StoneClan territory, they let it run. And, helping those who needed it most, they returned to camp. Together.
-----
A sand colored ear flicked as pale amber eyes considered Kestrelkit for a moment. "Do you know why we allowed it to run, Kestrelkit?" He asked the apprentice-to-be. Kestrelkit 6 Moons - Tom - StoneClan Kestrelkit playfully swatted at his uncle's muzzle when Hawkstar went to imitate the fox. With bright eyes and an eager heart, he listened as the scene was set - and unfolded dramatically in his mind's eye. He could picture Leopardstrike standing tall and proud, and the red-furred beast lurking from the shadows - ready to rip them apart!
"I want my warrior name to be Kestrelstrike!" He announced, unable to keep himself from interrupting. Quickly stamping down any more commentary, the tawny kitten was on his feet, tail painting excited curves and curls in the open air behind him. When Hawkstar spoke of how he got his scar, Kestrelkit didn't hide a wince, his eyes as round as bumblebees in greenleaf.
He's really brave. "Where was Eagletalon? Did he help you? Was Leopardstrike okay?" The question bubbled forth, and Kestrelkit found himself with his paws on Hawkstar's flank, gazing with strong interest. I've never met Leopardstrike before. Is she... ?
That was his next question, but Hawkstar finally had one of his own for the young tom.
"Do you know why we allowed it to run, Kestrelkit?"
"Because you were bleeding? And it's more important to find a medicine cat. And because it knew better than to take on a pack of StoneClan warriors!" That had to be the right answer. Kestrelkit knew in his heart that if he had been there, and it was Meadowkit that had gotten hurt, he would've put her on his back and carried her all the way to Dawnblossom's den.
Never mind the fox.

Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains The big tom laughed warmly, a deep rumble in the back of his throat as he nodded his muzzle along to Kestrelkit's answer. Although Kestrelkit was certainly growing, the young tom still felt small in Hawkstar's paws, tumbling excitedly over him as though Hawkstar were a mountain to scale, and not simply the Clan leader. Deciding to veer a moment and answer a pawful of the tom kit's barrage of questions before providing the answer to the one he'd asked Kestrelkit, the big tom caught his nephew with a massive, but gentle paw and drew him closer.
"Eagletalon, well... We were both much younger back then, Kestrelkit. Your father was likely in the same spot where you cuddle up to your mother." He lowered his voice conspiratorially, as though he had the greatest secret to share. "Your father had still been a kit!" After over eighty moons, a ten moon age gap seemed like a hiccup in time. Back then, however, it had been much more important. Hawkstar thanked StarClan every day Eagletalon had been too young to have been there. He would not wish that day on anyone, especially not his sand-colored brother.
"Leopardstrike showed the fox who was boss, fret not about that. Though she walks with StarClan now, that incident was not the one to claim her. Perhaps another time, I can share with you stories of Leopardstrike." He grinned, pale amber eyes glinting at the memory of his recklessly brave sister. How different life might have been with her walking among us now. He thought to himself. "As for the fox... You are right in that a Clanmate's life is more important than seeking vengeance. If those around me had not thought to return me to camp as soon as possible? Well StoneClan may have had a different leader standing before you now." He meowed.
His tail twitched behind him, gaze catching sight of Eagletalon as the tom emerged from the nursery, no doubt searching out his son. It didn't take his friend long to spot the pair, his paws immediately directing him toward them. Returning his gaze to the kit in his paws, the StoneClan figurehead spoke once more. "Once the fox was outside of StoneClan's borders, they ceased chasing it for it had likely learnt its lesson that day, Kestrelkit. It fled the territory of its own volition. I want you to remember something, for me and for StoneClan."
There was a seriousness to his tone as he continued, though the warmth never disappeared. "An honorable warrior does not need to kill to win a battle." Eagletalon's pawsteps halted before them shortly after Hawkstar's words ceased, and his gaze flicked up to the senior warrior. Flashing his brother a grin, Hawkstar dipped his muzzle to nudge Kestrelkit's shoulder before releasing him from his paws. "Go on now, looks like your father wants to spend some time with you. Don't give him too much grief, Kestrelkit!" He teased, settling into a comfortable position to watch the father-son pair move away.
Silently, he thanked StarClan for the precious life they granted. The moments they shared, the memories they formed... That was family. That was StoneClan. leader of stoneclan and may you have the courage to scale their summits background image | harley king | Fawn | table by phoenix
