It was unbelievably annoying, feeling Pinekit squirming about beside her, trying to get comfortable as he slept. He kept on accidentally kicking her in the side and laying his head atop her own. How could any cat sleep like that? She wasn't a patch of moss for anyone to just lay on and kick around!
The black and white kitten cracked a single, amber eye open and glared up at her tabby brother. Silently, she began plotting her revenge just as the tom's back legs kicked out at her again. Badgerkit wanted to ensure that her brother knew that she was not a force to be reckoned with. Once the tom was comfortable, she put her plan into motion. The tiny she-kit hefted her body up onto his side, laying on the brown tom as he tried to sleep. 'That'll show him for laying on me!' She thought, huffing silently.
Without so much as a warning, the bi-color she-kit was suddenly picked up by the scruff. She mewled out in protest as a large, red, tom brought her closer to him, placing her down between his paws and beginning to groom her. "Be nice to your brother Badgerkit, you know he has trouble sleeping sometimes." He meowed.
"But Russetstorm! He keeps kicking me and laying on me, I can't just let him walk away unpunished!" The tuxedo female whined in response. It wasn't fair that her brother got to do whatever he wanted just because he had sleeping problems, she should get to kick and lay on him too! It was only fair after all. "And he ruined my nap! Now I wont be able to get back to sleep."
"Uh oh, you can't sleep? Well you know what happens to kittens who can't sleep don't you!?"Russetstorm asked, feigning surprise.
Badgerkit merely tilted her head up at him, giving a look of confusion. "No I don't. What happens to kits who can't sleep?"
"They get a visit from the nuzzle monster!" The ginger tom cried out, startling the kitten as he suddenly nuzzled up against her side in an affectionate manner. It wasn't long before Badgerkit let out an excited squeal and a giggle, effectively waking bother her mother and her brother up.
"Honestly Russetstorm!" A black paw swatted the ginger male's head lightly, ensuring that the move did not harm him or the kit in his paws. "She should be sleeping, and you should be out hunting! Not awake playing silly games with you! Go on, get moving, you don't want to start falling behind on your duties." The tuxedo she-cat known as Nightpool stated.
"Right, I'll see you later Badgerkit. Remember to be nice to your brother while I'm gone." The ginger tom mewled, licking the top of the kitten's head.
"Aw, but I was having so much fun! You're gonna come back later on though right Russetstorm?" The amber-eyed kitten asked, staring up at her father with big, sad eyes. She'd hoped that if she tried to make herself look as cute as possible, it would convince her father to come back sooner.
When the older tom looked back at her however, she saw in his eyes an emotion that very much confused her. It was brief, but for a moment she could have sworn she saw a look of sadness in his eyes. Then, as though it had never even happened in the first place, it was gone. 'Maybe I was just seeing things. Or maybe he just really doesn't want to go.' She though to herself, hopeful that the latter was true.
"Yes Badgerkit, I'll be sure to come and visit you later tonight. Until then, you keep your mother and Pinekit company okay? I don't want them getting lonely." Russetstorm mewled, giving her one last lick to the forehead before doing the same to Pinekit and Nightpool. Then, he staggered out of the nursery, turning and giving one final glance to his family as he left them behind to go hunting.
Many hours passed and the daylight began to fade, slowly turning into night. As time went on and the moon began to climb into the sky, Nightpool and the kits couldn't help but wonder where Russetstorm had gone. Most of his other clanmates had come back by now and it wasn't like him to stay out this late. They couldn't help but worry about him, after all, Treeclan was close to Demon's lair, what if the lynx found him and decided to make a meal of him?
Concerned, Nightpool eventually rose to her feet and looked down at the kits. "Badgerkit,Pinekit, please stay here and wait for me, I'm going to go check on your father." She mewled, padding off towards the warriors' den. The dark-furred she-cat entered the den and looked around only to find no trace of her mate. Worry began building in the pit of her stomach as she departed the warrior den and checked the medicine cat den, wondering if by some chance he had ended up in there. Once again she found nothing.
Desperation and terror filled the queen and she continued frantically searching around camp until she eventually ran into a warrior in the midst of her panic. "Oh I'm so sorry, Sprucefur." She dipped her head apologetically. "I wasn't watching where I was going. Um, you wouldn't happen to have seen Russetstorm would you?"
The warrior nodded his head. "It's fine, I understand, and Russetstorm was headed towards the Lightningclan border, last time I saw him."
'The lightningclan border? What could Russetstorm be doing there?' Nightpool wondered, thanking the warrior before heading towards the border. It was there that she finally found him, his ginger form standing at the edge of the border, staring off into the distance of Lightningclan's territory.
"Russetstorm! What are you doing out here? The kits and I have been worried sick about you!" Nightpool mewled, the sound of her voice startling the male and causing him to jump back, away from the sound.
"Oh, it's just you Nightpool." Russetstorm eventually said, quickly regaining his composure and giving a firm shake of his head. "I'm afraid I can;t do that. I-I've got something important to tell you. Um, you're not my only mate, I have a mate in Lightningclan whom I meet up with whenever I can. She's actually the reason you and I became mates in the first place. I just wanted a way to keep other cats from getting suspicious of me going out to meet her, so I took you as my mate so nobody would suspect my disloyalty. Don't get me wrong,I love you and our kits, just not in the same way that you love me. I think it's time that I leave though, I don't think I can handle being apart from her any longer. Please don't hate me for this, but neither of us will be happy if I go on living a lie." He mewled, once again turning and walking away, tthis timefor the final time.
Nightpool was stunned by this revelation, having never imagined her mate was in love with someone else. All kinds of questions filled her head as she watched him pad off into Lightningclan. 'Why did this happen, why couldn't I see the signs, what do I tell the kits what do I tell the clan?' It was all too much for the dark she-cat, so she stood there for a while, dumbfounded before eventually heading back to camp herself, feeling empty and alone.
Badgerkit and Pinekit were waiting for her back at the nursery, both staring up at her with wide, innocent eyes when she padded through the nursery entrance. "Nightpool you're back! Where's Russetstorm?" Badgerkit asked, trying to look behind her mother to see if the red tom was hiding there, waiting to jump out and surprise her.
He was not there however and she knew something was wrong when Nightpool collapsed into a heap in her nest, ignoring her kits' question. There was simply too much that the queen had yet to fully take in, but again the kit repeated her question and suddenly a sob tore it's way out of her mouth, followed by another and another.
Badgerkit stared down at her mother, watching her as she sobbed violently. One final time the kitten posed the question, she just had to know.
"Mama, where did daddy go?"
