BRIGHTPAW
Brightpaw! Brightpaw!
Her new name still echoed in her ears as she woke up in the middle of the night. She found the apprentice den uncomfortable despite her siblings still nestled beside her. Rising out of her nest, her pure white pelt seemed to take on a strange hue as she stepped forth into the crescent moon night. The entire camp was mostly quiet save for the soft humming coming from the warrior's den, or even the louder rumbles coming form the elder's den. Despite hearing the sound of slumbering cats, Brightpool didn't feel at all tired. She felt eager and ready to engage with the world in a different way. For a moment she wondered what it meant her gift. She wasn't sure if that was the proper name for it, sometimes it didn't seem like a gift, especially seeing cats lost and afraid.
"Its a big step," A voice stated, having not sensed a cat walk up to her, Brightpaw turned to look and held back a gasp of surprise. Beside her almost coming out of no where was a tom-cat. He was taller than her and considering she was shorter than her sibling it wasn't difficult to be taller than her. His eyes were blue but also star-filled, a telling sign that he wasn't of his world, not anymore. She was so captivated with his eyes she hadn't noticed that the rest of him looked as if he already glowed form the inside out.
"Um yeah, it hasn't even been a full day," She replied after a moment of shared silence, once she was able to regain the use of her tongue. "My name is Brightpaw," She told him, it was only polite to offer one's name first and considering he looked older, it was easy to assume he had died long ago. That alone would mean Brightpaw had limited knowledge of who he was, or had been.
"Nice to meet you Brightpaw, I'm Shadepaw" He replied, his voice oddly pleasent and warm, something Brightpaw wasn't used to. It wasn't that anyone treated her badly, but because of her size they often talked down to her which was annoying.
"Nice to uh, meet you Shadepaw," She replied softly, careful not to let her voice carry to far in fear of waking her Clanmates. Silence started to grow between them, but unlike the usual silence it was easy to be quiet and just listen with Shadepaw around. Even at a younger age then six moons, Brightpaw had always been captivated by the stars, this night was no different.
Her amber eyes titled upward to gaze into the patterns in the dark blue sky. She didn't notice it right away but Shadepaw's starlight eyes had shifted from looking at the sky to looking at her.
"You are the first to see me," He told her, flicking his tail over her shoulder. Brightpaw didn't feel the gesture but heard his words and slowly turned to look at him. A sheepish nod which only made Shadepaw smile. "It makes it less lonely, I'm glad you can see me," He told her, moving as if to touch her forehead. Her eyes closed but instead of feeling the brush of his fur she felt a chilling wind. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that..." He mumbled, once he realized how impolite he had been. Brightpaw only dropped her gaze.
"Its okay. I can't really imagine what it is like, why haven't um..left," She asked him, feeling a sense of deja vu, she uttered those phrase to a few spirit cats now, each of them had different answers.
"I don't know really, I guess because I worked so hard to be a warrior and then some badger ended it all," Shadepaw replied a hint of anger in his voice, which didn't surprise Brightpaw. Even the dead had feelings.
"I'm sorry you weren't able to be a warrior," She replied letting her eyes linger on him for a moment before looking back to the stars. She felt conflicted, Shadepaw could never be a warrior, it wasn't within her power to give that to him, but she would be able to sit with him and make him feel less lonely if that helped.
They stayed there until the early purple hue of dawn started to rise, Brightpaw stifled a yawn which made Shadepaw laugh a bit. "I'm sorry I kept you up, but it was nice to meet you and sorta talk to you," He told her, rising to his paws. Brightpaw nodded again her eyes feeling heavy. Shadepaw brushed his tail across her shoulder, sending a chill down her spine once more. "Get some sleep and train hard," Shadepaw told her before turning and within a blink of an eye he was gone. Brightpaw looked around for a moment confused had he gone to StarClan? Normally cats that left rose upward into the sky, she doubted he had truly left but instead decided to disappear. Trying not to overthink what she saw, Brightpaw returned to the apprentice den. She wasted no time and quickly fell asleep curled up beside Kindlepaw.
