Description:
With her rich brown coloring, Lotuswhisker can easily be mistaken for an otter to anyone who doesn't know any better. Having inherited her father Eaglechaser's dark brown hue but her mother's elegant chocolate points, her limbs, tail and face are all darker than the rest of her. Perhaps in a nod to her grandparents on either side, Lotuswhisker's chin and throat are white, as are her whiskers for which she has been named.
Born very dark, Lotuswhisker lightened up by the time she was apprentice-aged, though her leathery brown nose retained the original dark hue.
Physically, she is an average-sized warrior with a naturally water-resistant coat owing to her fish diet since she was old enough to taste her first minnow. On the slender side, she is not especially strong, but what she lacks in muscle she makes up for in grace and speed. Nimble, small tasks that demand concentration and a steady paw are what she excels at.
Description Summary: Slender brown she-cat with a dark brown points, a white jaw and sea-green eyes.
Personality:
For all her looks and for all her kindness, it's actually a little hard to get to know this she-cat properly. Very few cats besides her sister, Willowbreeze, know what she is like beneath the expected behavior and the ignorance and vanity.
Still, if you aren't looking for too much, she's an easy enough cat to talk to and even been known to help out a friend or two. Very fond of kits, Lotuswhisker gives the impression of a pampered, vain feline with plans to start a family of her own. However, there is more to her than that.
Lotuswhisker takes her heritage seriously, but not so seriously as to hold a grudge against the cats in her Clan that are known as 'different' or 'impure'. She does not hate them, but she does believe the mean-spirited rumors and viewpoints held by many of her purist Clanmates in regards to Timberstar's supporters. That doesn't mean she is without a brain; rather, many of her views have been unchallenged, and she has lived her entire life learning that there was clearly a right way to be a RainClan cat and a wrong way to be a RainClan cat.
Loyal and particularly skilled with doing delicate work, Lotuswhisker has been known to help Swanfeather out from time to time, doing little menial tasks such as tidying up. She has no interest in becoming a Medicine Cat's Apprentice, as that would prevent her from starting a family of her own.
If anyone knew her mother, they'd know how much pressure she was under to pick a mate worthy of her family lineage.
Lotuswhisker harbors a small amount of rebellion in her heart, put there by a mentor who trained her harder than she needed and first gave her the idea to internalize much of her thoughts and opinions. Sometimes it's easier to agree or follow orders than it is to be the nail that sticks up.
Good at improvising and a talented fisher (though she has serious trouble catching larger fish, with paws as small as hers), she manages well enough during warrior duties. Her destiny might be for the nursery. However, that isn't to say she is somehow cowardly or afraid to work hard.
It's true, she's very vain, but when push comes to shove, she knows that her place is at her mother and sister's side, both setting a good example for future generations and allying herself with a cause she believes in.
...But there is room for doubt. Maybe the rumors she grew up with and believed about the other Clans aren't so true after all? There is room for doubt when your own father, a Half-Clan cat with NightClan parentage, leaves his family behind to go join NightClan... When she finds herself to be 1/4th NightClan, there is room for doubt that her mother's aggressive Purist ideology might not be the 'right way' after all.
History:
(Kithood, Apprenticeship, Civil War)
Her life started out so simple. So easy.
Born in a litter of two, Lotuskit was a happy blend of both Eaglechaser and Shadefrost, with her mother's dark points and her father's brown coloring. She inherited a slender build from her grandparents, but the playfulness and social nature was all hers. Born to two proud RainClan warriors, she was always aware of her ancestry, and how that made her better than the others; no one ever directly said this out loud, mind you, but soon enough Lotuskit could read between the lines. She carried her head high and, combined with her looks (the other queens often commented on how pretty she would be when she grew up), felt like a princess in a Clan of paupers.
Everything was perfect, even when on the day of her apprentice ceremony, she was assigned Leopardyowl of all cats.
An aggressive, purist-minded older warrior, he did not see a soft kitten to go easy on, but a lump of clay to be molded and beaten into the shape he wanted. She had to tiptoe around his temper, often complaining loudly to her father that her mentor was unfair or especially mean. Eaglechaser could do little about this, but he was encouraging and often pointed out weaknesses in Leopardyowl's fighting methods to try to give her something of an edge.
It was a struggle for the first few moons. She felt entitled to a certain amount of respect deserved only by her blood, but Leopardyowl made it clear that it took more than blood to be a good warrior.
At 10 moons, everything changed. Shadefrost tried to shield her and her sister from what was going on between their parents, but it was clear when they could not find their father the next morning that something terrible had happened. Rumors had spread like wildfire that their mother had struck their father—something about a secret, a lie he'd been telling—and their father had disappeared over the NightClan border.
Confused and hurt, Lotuspaw had asked her mother repeatedly what had happened, but the older she-cat grew distant. The two sisters, lost in a world of whispers and heartache, could rely only on themselves for the last few moons of their apprenticeships.
Leopardyowl grew intolerable. He sneered at her, made her do pointless tasks over and over again, and he frequently took her by the NightClan border, asking her if she wanted to follow in her father's cowardly footsteps. Frustration and anger got the better of her one day, and Lotuspaw demanded that her mentor, cruel and belittling, finally tell her why he was treating her so poorly.
"Don't you get it, you stupid 'paw? Your father's half NightClan! That makes you part NightClan too."
Funny, how it was her world finally sliding into place that it was just starting to shatter.
Suddenly all the rumors and the whispers and her mother's coldness made sense. Suddenly, she was disgusted with herself; she had heard the stories, she had grown up knowing NightClan was easily the worst Clan in the forest, that they were responsible for so much death and foxhearted behavior. Rather than spiral, rather than share this horrid revelation with her sister Willowpaw, Lotuspaw tried her best to protect her.
And to protect herself.
Showing Leopardyowl the same coldness he'd shown her, she completed his stupid tasks without question, often getting up earlier and earlier to get it done before he asked her to. Or volunteering for patrols or to tag along with Willowpaw's training sessions so Leopardyowl wouldn't have an excuse to pick on her by himself.
It was the proudest day of her young life when she was finally crowned Lotuswhisker. It not only meant the end of Leopardyowl's nasty mentorship, it meant that she was no longer a flea, no longer a cat that was not worthy of respect. She had earned her rank as a warrior, and no amount of dirty looks from Leopardyowl could take that away from her.
She cheered so loudly she went hoarse when Willowpaw was named Willowbreeze right after, and the sisters sat their vigil together.
As if they had proven to Shadefrost that they were as RainClan as she was, their mother's coldness slowly began to recede, the frost melting like it was the beginning of newleaf. It was a relief, to Lotuswhisker, who had missed her mother dearly and had always looked to her for guidance and praise and the boost to her self-esteem she sometimes craved.
Her life after that began to get back on track. Her popularity picked up, she made friends with the other warriors and tried never to cross paths with Leopardyowl if she could help it.
Everything was good again, until once more her world was shaken up.
In dead of leafbare of her 24th moon, after a hard, hard winter in which many bellies went empty and tensions ran high, Swanfeather declared that Timberwing, the RainClan deputy, should not become leader of RainClan. A NightClan cat could never be worthy of such a lofty position.
Sagefrost has joined Swanfeather in a heartbeat, and though Lotuswhisker's heart ached to see the Clan torn so quickly, her own friends split between Swanfeather supporters and Timberwing supporters, she took her rightful place beside her mother. It was the right choice, wasn't it? A NightClan cat shouldn't lead RainClan. That would've been... wrong. Right?
It's been six moons of this civil war, and Swanfeather supporters have eventually made their new home in the wooded cove. Tensions are high again, but Lotuswhisker does her best to maintain her charming, pleasant disposition. Prey is plentiful now, and the other purists are tolerating her presence, even friendly, but Lotuswhisker can't quite shake the feeling that they're all just waiting for her to make a mistake.
To seem too 'NightClan' to be allowed.
She feels like she's walking a tightrope most days, both when it comes to her own views and when it comes to the opinions of others.
(Post-Civil War)
Lotuswhisker's world changed for the better when she was saved from a swan by Gullswoop, the half-Clan son of Vultureback and Falconleap. Though he was everything her mother despised, Lotuswhisker thought him charming and noble, and remarkably kind despite all that was happening.
Feelings began to build up between them. It wasn't until a jealous Salmonclaw attacked Gullswoop for talking to Lotuswhisker. Lotuswhisker and her sister Willowbreeze arrived in time to chase away Salmonclaw and his posse; together, they carried Gullswoop back to camp. He has three scars on his face from the incident. Shocked by the violence and the hatred coming from the Purists, Lotuswhisker and her sister rejoined the rest of the Clan.
The end of the civil war was a mess for Lotuswhisker. Her mother, Shadefrost, had been one of the Purists responsible for the deaths of so many of her Clanmates. Shadefrost was exiled for her crimes, along with Lotuswhisker's former mentor, Leopardyowl. The first few moons of reintegration into Clan life was rough; even though she had returned before Stormstar's ultimatum, Lotuswhisker lost her apprentice, Shadowpaw, to a loyalist mentor instead.
She was something of an outcast, and whispers of her mother's treachery followed her everywhere she went. Except around Gullswoop.
Without the divide between them, their love flourished. In Newleaf #4, Gullswoop and Lotuswhisker officially became mates.
Not long after, Lotuswhisker became pregnant with their first litter.
On Greenleaf 21st (year 4), she gave birth to three healthy kittens; Falconkit (a tom, named for his paternal grandmother), Owlkit (a she-cat), and Swankit (a she-cat).
